Afterlife of extraction: Coastal Regeneration of Cromarty Firth 2020-21, MLA Graduation Project Online Project Portfolio: https://ansonlaihkla.wixsite.com/cromarty-firth ECA Graduation Show: https://www.graduateshow.eca.ed.ac.uk/portfolio/anson-tsz-wai-lai

In this Anthropocene epoch, landscapes are being harmed by the rapid urbanization. The coastal landscape changed by the expansion of coastal infrastructure to sustain the growth of residential, commercial, industrial, needs. Cromarty Firth is the showcase of how ‘Anthropocene/ Capitalocene’ as the new geological epoch effect and transform the global landscape and environment. The socio-economic transformation of the Firth is driven by fossil fuel extraction and industry. This transformation is also causing the fragmentation of coastal landscape of the Cromarty Firth. From the above context, the project will focus on the area of Nigg Bay, the edge of the Cromarty Firth. Discover the geology and ecological potential of defragmenting the coastal landscape of the Firth. The project is aimed to create a continuous network along the Firth in various forms, a boardwalk, parks, or patches of greenery. To regenerate the natural habitat along the coastline through rejuvenating the watercourse, expanding the natural landscape to the intensive agricultural field. Ultimately using the network to defragment the coastal landscape of the Firth due to the fossil fuel extraction, embracing the natural heritage, and create a green network for the whole Cromarty Firth. Also, using the network to reimagine the afterlife of extraction.

Rejuvenating the river to create a riparian habitat, create a wet grassland habitat on the farmland for more water retention to prevent water runoff and also protect the farmland behind from heavy flooding. Expand and restore the intertidal mudflat and saltmarsh along the bay area, using the boardwalk as the key binding element to create a continuous coastal network along the Cromarty Firth. Placing a number of interactive hubs along the boardwalk for education, exhibition, and shelter. Connecting Nigg Bay to the other side of the Firth through the Nigg Pier.

WILDING Lauriston Castle & Farm 2020 MLA Studio 2

The world currently facing the problem of the rapid urbanization, the expansion of the infrastructure, housing and other development. As we rapidly expanding the urban city, we place ourselves in a dominant position over nature and often overlooked the needs of keeping and sustaining a strong ecosystem, problems including loss of biodiversity, destruction of ecosystems, and the climate changes forming a wider sustainability issue which needed to address. In this project we are trying to investigate how we can address these social-ecological issues as a landscape architect, using difference landscape design strategies in different scales form a wider urban planning aspect to micro scale using. The exploration leading us to address these socio-ecological issues and gaps with 3 key design drives - Diversity, Exploration, and Ownership. the project is going into detail and start to develop and expand the strategies individually on the areas in relation to the catalyse site – the area of River Almond. The project is aim to rebuilding the riparian woodland along with the River Almond with a continuous watercourse and wetland network, and to extend the woodland to form an intact network connecting the fragmented landscape and benefits to human and more than human.

Shenzhen Bay Avenue East Extension Competition Shenzhen, China 2018 Nov First place World Landscape Architecture 2019 Award - Shortlisted

Our design design celebrates the concept of ‘City-CultureBay’ to create a coherent ensemble of interconnected elevated walkways, linked by escalators and stairs to a lively streetscape and basement level civic realm. Through this journey, the linear and laminar nature of the existing Shenzhen Bay Avenue will gradually change as it responds to the change in direction of the planned horizontal axis, the lateral connections of the site, the vibrant exchange between the Commercial district and the new Cultural quarter and a gradual greening and softening of the public spaces towards the Bay.
