The Cuckoo's Calling is a 2013 crime fiction novel by J. K. Rowling, published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. A brilliant mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.
Reviews And why did Amazon also reveal it? Obviously she used it for a reason. Perfect example of how gossip is more important these days than literature. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. This isn't whistle blowing on government spying of individuals. This is individuals invading the privacy of other individuals. Yes, fame has a price. Yes, famous people can't enjoy public activities with friends or families. This is someone's career. How dare idiots think they have the right to reveal someone else's business. Rant over. I recommend the book. I don't care who wrote it. ================================================== I admit I didn't purchase this until I learned that J.K. Rowling wrote it under a pen name. But, I did not go into this expecting another Harry Potter - on the contrary - I was hoping for something completely different. I decided to read it because I love detective mysteries, and I knew that J.K. Rowling was an accomplished writer with a talent for imaginative story telling. Unfortunately, although this was a good solid detective story, there was nothing original about "The Cuckoo's Calling". It features a typical hard boiled, down-onhis-luck detective with a spunky secretary who has lots of initiative and goes above and beyond her job description. The setting of the fashion world with a sprinkling of rock stars and rap stars seemed a little cardboard. I was interested enough in the "mystery" to finish the book, but I was disappointed in the solution/conclusion. I won't be reading the sequel.
