The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s. The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.
Reviews "'It's a libel. I'm too poor.'" On being asked about his engagement by her cousin and her husband, Nick replies. "-there was a jauntiness about her movements as if she had learned to walk upon golf course on clean, crisp mornings."
It is pretentious to use this kind of language in a serious literature. This is American literature all right. ================================================== I first read this book over 50 years ago. To my surprise, reading again was like reading it for the first time. It gives a picture of a time and place and segment of society before the great depression that will never be dupicated yet has parallels in the rich libertines of our owntime, self indulged directionless people who are amoral at best yet envied and glamoriized. The reader feels enriched by the experience while sad for the characters in the story.
