Assignment 15.1: Small House, Part 6

12-14-2017

Anthony P. Ashford ARH 650 OL, Fall 2017 Instructor: S. Davidson

Narrative description of client: Frederick (Boomer) and Sarah Hicken recently tied the not after 6 years and are looking to build a modest home in a rural setting that isn’t too far away from Youngstown, Ohio. Boomer is a machinist operator of extrusion screws for plasticating. He starts his day at 4am and has plenty of day light left in the day to enjoy many of his interests outside of work. He is an avid gun collector and participates in biweekly Trap shooting events, where he recently became the local champion in the Mahoning Valley Trap League. Boomer equally spends his free time riding and repairing on-off road motorbikes, like his Suzuki DRZ 400. He actively rides expert trails and sometimes intermediate when his friends need a break. When he wants to relax he hops on his game console for added fun. Sarah is a licensed cosmetologist that works as a manager at a cosmetology school. Predominantly she is a domestic engineer caring for Boomer. In her down time she enjoys going or watching hockey games and listening or attending country music and concerts. She is also an avid Netflix original viewer. Boomer would like to incorporate a place for his gun collection, and a shop/garage that is strictly for repairing his motorbikes, as he regularly destroys them. He also would like a space that is adjacent to his shop as a game room. Sarah would like to incorporate a theater room for her active Netflix, Hockey games and country music concerts and have a place for their bird. They would like a large kitchen that serves as a dining area that can occupy a family or friends gathering occasionally. They require two bedrooms and one and a half baths. If they could have 3 bedroom and two and a half baths that would be preferable or the option to add on to the house in the future for additional bedrooms. In addition to a motorbike workshop they require a two car garage or carport. And they would also like a pool and jacuzzi that operates all year long.

Experience: In this diagram, the inhabitant/visitor experiences quiet, private, inward-oriented space cut-off from the outside. The feeling to escape from long days in the outdoors is expressed by means looking inward. The experience of an inward look at any point directing you to the core of the home may elaborate on the distancing of oneself from the outside. The client would like to avoid the outdoors. To escape from extreme sports, motor biking and skeet shooting. To feel some calmness, peace, quiet & intimacy. To not be reminded every second that the world is waiting to tackle and his focus is with his partner, or self relaxing. The only correlation they’d like to state where the two worlds (indoors and out) sort of meet is when he focuses on repairing a bike or cleaning guns.

PLAN DIAGRAM

In my latest diagram it shows that each space is a journey from the last, transcending from the exterior to a further interior environment, to escape the exterior, while also descending down into the earth. The elevations and sections depict this downward motion best, as the landscape embodies the structure, leaving limited visibility to the exterior, with only a few outlets and simultaneously providing natural lighting from above.
