INTRO
I
can’t believe we are already halfway through the Maxxis 2017 Flat Track Nationals. And what a season it has been so far with lots of close racing. It has been good to welcome new riders to the DTRA family whether it has been beginners learning their craft or the more experienced riders who have been shaking things up and hitting the podium. One of those riders making waves has been Ferran Mas Saenz from Spain who has delivered some top results in both the Vintage and Hooligan classes. We caught up with the speedy Spaniard to find out more (P106). The season opener at Rye House provided a spectacular start to the season, especially with freakishly warm and sunny weather for the time of year. The place was buzzing and the racing delivered (P12). We noticed many racers have been busy over the winter dialling in their bikes and some had even built completely new custom machines for the season. Following round one many of our racers travelled to Holland for the second annual Hells Race put on by DTRA regulars Bram De Roeck and Angelo Van Zele and their crew. The track in Lelystad was well groomed and with good weather the Hells crew delivered a superb weekend of flat track action (P30). The event also kicked off the 2017 Hooligan Championship series which is brought to you by Harley Davidson, Sideburn magazine and the DTRA. This certainly delivered plenty of high speed thrills, and even a few spills (P46). We then moved to the MCN Festival in Peterborough for a fantastic weekend of flat track racing. Not only was the racing closely fought but we had several guest riders including US flat track racers Johnny Lewis and James
Rispoli, along with Australian speedway star Kevin Doolan and speedy British Superbike racer Chris Walker, taking part (P54). This event also played host to round two of the Hooligan series. Unfortunately, a big crash was a harsh reminder that our sport is dangerous. Fortunately, all riders involved are recovering well and we’d like to thank all the emergency staff that cared for our riders following this. This is big boys racing and the show continued with a hotly contested final (P74). We were pleased for the DTRA travelling circus to return to Greenfield Dirt Track once again. This year we had two rounds with Saturday’s action taking place on the oval and Sunday’s racing on the TT track. Both were nothing short of brilliant and we’d like to give a big shout out to George Pickering, his crew and family who put in so much hard work to make this event so special (P82). The venue also played host to round three of the Hooligan series and once again delivered some top action on the fast paced oval (P100). We are excited for the rest of the season after such a good start to the year. Next we up head to the Adrian Flux Arena in Peterborough for round five of the series on July 7. It promises to be a monster weekend of motorcycle racing with floodlit DTRA racing on the Friday night and Rookie and Youth classes on the Saturday morning. Along with this there’s the final round of the 2017 Hooligan series and let’s not forget it’s also DirtQuake weekend, which promises to deliver some spectacular, if weird and wonderful, racing. MAXXIS 2017 UK FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS. APRIL 9, RYE HOUSE SPEEDWAY, HODDESDON Round one of the Maxxis 2017 UK Flat Track Championships presented by the DTRA (Dirt Track Riders Association) was held at Rye House Speedway and kicked off the season in style. With the largest numbers of entrants to date, blazing sunshine and an amazing day of racing, it produced a spectacular opening event. WWW.DIRTTRACKRIDERS.CO.UK 13
DTRA ROUND 1 PRO CLASS The Pro class final saw 2016 DTRA champion Alan Birtwistle line up on the front of the grid with former champion Aidan Collins and young hotshots Oliver Brindley and Toby Hales. It promised to be special and didn’t disappoint as Collins got a flying start leading the way into turn one. Birtwistle and Brindley were hot on his heels with Hales chasing hard in fourth. A crash early in the race led to a restart with the riders lining up in the position they were in when the race was stopped.

Once again Collins got a text book start and led the way with Birtwistle, Brindley and Hales chasing as before. Birtwistle pushed hard all the way but Collins had the track dialled, held his line and the competition at bay to take the win. Birtwistle rode well for second with Brindley holding off Hales for third.

RESTRICTED CLASS A new guard of young hotshots took over in the Restricted class. Skye Adams showed skills beyond her age as she blasted into the lead ahead of Jordan Miller and Jon Bell. Miller had a wobble and Bell didn’t hesitate to take advantage as he moved through into second. Out front Adams rode well and stayed out of trouble to take the win. Bell took second with Miller holding off a late challenge from Joe Banks to take third.

VINTAGE CLASS The Vintage class had a truly international flavour and provided one of the best races of the day. Flamboyant Frenchman Dimitri Coste got a flying start as he led the way through the first turn with speedy Spaniard Ferran Mas Saenz second and Britain’s Guy Sutherland third. Mas Saenz then turned up the power as he blasted past Coste to move into the lead with Sutherland close by. Following lots of jostling for position early in the race Mas Saenz manged to open a small lead before taking the win. Behind, Triumph duo Sutherland and Coste rode superbly to take second and third respectively.

THUNDERBIKE CLASS In the Thunderbike class Jon Bell got a fast start as he led Ross Herrod and Mike Hill into turn one. Bell continued to lead and started to open a gap on his competition. Behind, Hill got the better of Herrod as he moved into second. Herrod sat in third but was being pressured from Kye Forte in fourth. Bell took the win with Hill second and Herrod held off Forte for third.

DTRA ROUND 1 ROOKIE CLASS The Rookie class was bigger than ever with lots of new racers joining the DTRA family. Lee Sadler got the early advantage as he led Richard Gardiner and Gareth Howes. Behind, Howes turned it up as he moved into second and started to close the gap on Sadler. In the final lap Howes made his move to snatch the win. Sadler had to settle for second with Martin Mills moving through into third.

MINIBIKE CLASS Joe Banks flew into the lead in the Minibike class only to crash early on putting him out of contention. Neil Macqueen seized the opportunity to take the reins up front with Jeremy Skipp and Mike Fisher hot on his heels. Macqueen rode a smart race staying ahead to claim victory. Behind, Skipp, Fisher and Andy Swift pushed each other for the final podium positions. Skipp hung on to second as Swift worked his way into third.

YOUTH CLASSES The Youth Senior Class saw Joe Burden take the win. In the Youth Intermediates Luke Gardiner got a flying start only to be taken by Jack Bell who went on take the victory. Ted Wilkinson rode well as he moved up to steal second with Gardiner rounding out the podium. In the Youth Juniors Charlie Kelly took the win with Thomas Hunt second and Wilbur Skip third.

May 7 LelYstad Speedway, lelyStad, Holland The second annual Hells Race took place on May 7 at Lelystad Speedway, Lelystad in Holland. The Belgian team behind the race delivered a first class event with a truly international flavour with riders from Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Great Britain. With slick organisation, a beautifully groomed 280-metre long track and sunshine it produced a spectacular event.

The Pro class final delivered some classy racing with all the riders fighting for position in turn one. Holland’s Sytze Hilleger pulled ahead and started to open a lead with clear track ahead of him. Behind, the battle for second heated up as Dutch rider Jan Simon Ter Heiden tried to hold off a fast charging Maikel Dijkstra also from Holland. Dijkstra managed to get through and started to chase down race leader Hilleger, who looked like he had the race sewn up. In the final stages Dijkstra blasted through to take the win leaving Hilleger to claim second with Ter Heiden third.

2017 In the Vintage class it was British riders Ross Jackson and Dave Webb, along with Hubert Bastie from France, who hit the first corner at the front. Jackson, who was racing his first flat track event, came out ahead and started to open a gap on his Yamaha MX360. Bastie moved into second with Webb hot on his heels. At the front Jackson delivered a classy performance pulling away for the win. The battle for second continued with Webb making the jump on Bastie for second leaving the Frenchman to take third.

2017 Swiss riders Daniel Hellstrom and Jonas Nilsson led the charge in the Amateur class with Louis Breton from France in third. Hellstrom took the lead but Nilsson was with him and eventually found a gap to move into the lead. Behind, Pascal Closet from Belgium moved into third. Nilsson held his lead for the win with Hellstrom second and Closet third.

The Rookie class saw some great racing with Julien Braun from France getting a flying start to move into the lead with Retze Breedveld from Holland second and Gareth Howes from Britain in third. Braun rode a classy race staying out of trouble for the win. The battle from second continued throughout with Howes moving into second and Breedveld having to settle for third.

The Newbie class saw Germany’s Stefano Erba hit turn one in front with Jonas Winnelinckx from Belgium second and Ernst Landwaard third. Erba stayed out of trouble out front for the win with Winnelinckx second and a late charge from Holland’s Huub Breedveld saw him take third.

2017 Hooligan Championships Round One May 7 - Hells Race, Lelystad Speedway, Lelystad, Holland The 2017 DTRA Hooligan Championships kicked off in style at Lelystad Speedyway at Hells Race in Holland on May 7. The event, which is brought to you by Harley Davidson, Sideburn magazine and the DTRA, features weird and wonderful bikes that are post 1980 twins 750cc and above. The bikes have unmodified frames, the front brake disconnected and no knobbly tyres are permitted. As a result, there was an eclectic mix of bikes on the start line.

After three rounds of qualifying the final saw Jonathan Falkman from Sweden grab the lead going into the first corner. He was followed by Sideburn editor and owner Gary Inman from Great Britain with Holland’s Bart Verstijnen in third. Falkman was in fine form and untouchable out front as he blasted to the win. Behind, Inman continued to ride well and had no problem holding on to second place. The battle for third heated up in the final laps as Britain’s Ross Sharp started to catch Verstijnen. In the final stages of the race Sharp made his move and rode himself on to the final spot on the podium.

Along with the DTRA regulars a group of guest racers including James Rispoli and Johnny Lewis from the USA, Australian speedway star Kevin Doolan and British Superbike racer Chris Walker, upped the ante in Pro class which featured two rounds and finals over the weekend.

PRO CLASS In Saturday’s Pro Class it was a closely fought race with all the big names all heading into the first turn together. US stars Lewis and Rispoli led the charge with Britain’s Aidan Collins and Alan Birtwistle close behind. Rispoli came out ahead with Collins passing Lewis to move into second. It wasn’t long before Lewis reclaimed his second position and went after Rispoli. The pair fought closely with Lewis finding a gap in the latter part of the race to take the win. Rispoli took a well-deserved second with Collins holding off Birtwistle for third.

Following overnight rain the Vintage class were delivered tough conditions but it didn’t slow down Gary Birtwistle. He got a flying start and pulled away from his competition for a classy win. Behind, Peter Jordan led Spain’s Ferran Mas Saenz, but it wasn’t long before the speedy Spaniard passed on the inside and went on to take second. David Webb moved through to take third.

DTRA THUNDERBIKE CLASS After some closely fought heats the ever-competitive Thunderbike class saw a fast start with a large group all hitting turn one together. It was Holland’s Maikel Dijkstra who came out ahead with Jon Bell second and Richard Rowden third. Dijkstra pulled away for the win with Bell and Rowden holding their positions for second and third respectively.

Sunday’s Pro class once again saw Lewis, Rispoli, Collins and Birtwistle hit turn one together. Rispoli led the way after lap one with Lewis second and Collins third. The three pulled away from their competition with Lewis pressuring Rispoli the whole way. A small gap saw Lewis charge up the inside Rispoli once again as he went on for his second Pro class win of the weekend. Collins was also pressuring Rispoli but didn’t find the gap leaving him to settle for third.

T#46 O Charlie W A T Kelly CH Charlie had the perfect start to the season when he stormed to victory at round one at Rye House. At round two in Peterborough he was on the podium again with a third place finish. He went one better to take second at round three on the Greenfield oval before returning to his winning ways at round four on the Greenfield TT track. Keep an eye on this stylish young ripper because he has a great future ahead.

2017 Hooligan Championships Round Two May 13-14, MCN Festival of Motorcycling, Peterborough Arena The 2017 DTRA Hooligan Championships continued in spectacular fashion at the MCN Festival of Motorcycling at Peterborough Arena on May 13-14. The second event in the series, which is brought to you by Harley Davidson, Sideburn magazine and the DTRA, featured two events over the weekend of racing.

2017 Hooligan Championships Round Two Saturday Race Saturday’s event saw Johnny Lewis, a flat track race star from the USA, on top form in the Hooligan class. Following a restart because of an earlier crash the Floridan led the way with Britain’s Gary Inman second and Ross Sharp third. Out front Lewis rode a classy race blowing the competition away to take the win. Behind, a fast charging Ferran Mas Saenz from Spain moved through to take second with Superbike racer Chris Walker showing his skills as he moved through to take the final podium spot on the last lap.

2017 Hooligan Championships Round Two Sunday Race It was all change in Sunday’s Hooligan class with several new entries and few deciding to sit things out. Speedway star Kevin Doolan showed his pedigree on any bike as he got a flying start in front of the large crowd that had gathered to watch. The Australian stayed out of trouble up front and took the win. Behind, Chris Walker was back on form and went one better as he rode to second place. The battle for third saw Ferran Mas Saenz ahead of Gary Inman and Ross Sharp. Despite the best efforts of Inman and Sharp the Spaniard held his line to take third.

After three fast rounds of qualifying the final saw a stacked line up of riders. Spanish rider Ferran Mas Saenz has been making some moves in the Hooligan series after getting two podiums at round two which featured two races. His form continued as he rode a superb race on the fast Greenfield oval to grab his first Hooligan win of the season. Martin Mills rode a smart race to take second with Lee Kilpatrick third.

Who is Ferran Mas Saenz? Ferran Mas is a Peter Pan rider who it is not going to stop being this way while he continues winning motorcycles races. This also helps with my day-to-day life where I work in television commenting and writing on all types of wheeled sports for cinema and advertising. My virtuous spirit and self-belief creates the illusion of youth allowing me to confront all challenges with a good vibe.

What’s in your wheeled collection? I am not a big collector. I am more interested in the books that talk about motorcycles to help with my press or TV articles. As for motorcycles, I only collect motorcycles that are working. I have a flat track bike made in Catalonia, an Ossa Scrambler, a Montesa Rickman, a Bultaco Astro and El Bandido, and I have my first motorcycle, which is a Montesa Cota 25. This was made by my father when I was four years old.
How did you end up racing with the DTRA? This dream started on the steps of the 2016 edition of the Superprestigio Solo Moto when Anthony Brown showed me the 2017 DTRA calendar. In that moment I decided to race in England but I did not tell him at the time. In the first race at Rye House I met Mike Fisher who takes care of my Bultaco. He makes sure it’s in mint condition and it travels to the races in his van. Without Anthony and Mike my dream of racing in the UK with the DTRA wouldn’t be possible. Then after the first race the boys from Krazy Horse offered to loan me an Indian Scout to race the Hooligan series. Racing the DTRA championship has been the most exciting thing that I have done with my trousers on. I am extremely happy. D WWW.DIRTTRACKRIDERS.CO.UK 111

GREENFIELD TT 2016 MAXXIS UK NATIONAL FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND FOUR JUNE 11, GREENFIELD DIRT TRACK, ALFORD, LINCOLNSHIRE Round four of the Maxxis 2017 UK Flat Track Championships put on by the DTRA (Dirt Track Riders Association) series saw racing with difference at the Greenfield Dirt Track in Alford, Lincolnshire. Following on from the previous round of racing on the oval circuit round four moved on to the superb TT track. With jumps right and left and left hand turns it produced an epic day of fast paced motorcycle action.

2016 Memberships became available online January 2017 Race numbers are allocated on a first come first serve basis. 2016 members had up until end February 2016 to renew their membership to keep an existing number.
Membership Fees Full Adult Annual Membership – £65 (Including compulsory series number board) Youth Annual Membership – £55 (Including compulsory series number board) Day Memberships – £10 per day (Maximum of two per year. This fee will be deducted from an annual membership cost when you sign up for the year)
Rookie Class • For new riders and those less confident to ride in other classes • All machines must comply with the MCF flat track regulations for the
adult solo classes • All riders must be aged 18 or over on 01 January in that competitive season • The top three riders in each season will be removed from the novices and will be promoted to the short track Restricted Class for the following season Machine Type: 2 Stroke – 125cc to 500cc, 4 Stroke – 250cc to unlimited Note: If a rider wishes to be upgraded prior to this or is competitive enough to start racing with us and contest the Pro-Class or the Restricted Class they may request permission from the series organisers. Any such request will be reviewed by the organisers and may be granted solely at the organiser’s discretion.
Get a Licence To race or practice with us you will need to hold a valid MCF Licence. These are available on the MCF website. Day Licences will also be available at our meetings if required. Day Licences are charged at £15 per day for 2016.
Enter an event Each year the DTRA puts out a schedule of races. All races are pre-entry only. Entries open around four weeks before each round and close the week before the race. Details of each race are included in the race regulations which are issued when the entries open. Entries are made through the DTRA web shop. Entries are all prepay only.

• Singles, four stroke – 600cc to unlimited • V-twins and multi-cylinder four strokes – 600cc to unlimited
Note: Riders on equipment that does not meet the above specification but deemed suitable may also ride in the class but will not be eligible for championship points.
Intermediate Class • For riders aged 10- 15 years on the 01 January in that competitive season • Machines must comply with the technical regulations for the Junior/ Intermediate/Youth classes and the general MCF flat track regulations
Senior Class • For riders aged 14 – 17 years on the 01 January in that competitive season • Machines must comply with the technical regulations for the Junior/ Intermediate/Youth classes and the general MCF flat track regulations
