Northern Virginia Urban League nvul@gmail.com The mission of the Northern Virginia Urban League is to enable Northern Virginia minorities and other disadvantaged communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights through program services and effective advocacy. Our vision is to “Empowering Communities and Changing Lives” by helping individuals, families and communities achieve their full potential. Moderator Kofi Annan—
kofiannan321@gmail.com Kofi Annan founded The Activated People (TAP), Virginia-based a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting for racial and gender equity. TAP formed the only statewide coalition dedicated to transforming policing in the Commonwealth. In addition, Kofi spearheaded the creation of the Northern Virginia Equity Agenda Coalition, which is comprised of over two dozen organizations and marks the largest coalition of its type dedicated to promoting racial & gender equity. The NOVA EAC has accomplished a great deal since its founding including successfully lobbied for the release of over three dozen non-violent incarcerated individuals from the Fairfax County Detention Center to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in the jail; successfully lobbied for the collection and release of racial and location data of positive COVID-19 cases in Fairfax County; twice successfully lobbied local and state governments to extend eviction moratoriums to prevent the eviction of tenants impacted by COVID-19; and raised over $6,500 to purchase over 20,000 facemasks for lower-income & minority northern Virginia residents.
Kofi previously served two terms as the president of the Fairfax County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The branch led multiple successful advocacy efforts including convincing the county to designate over $10M for affordable housing and police body-worn cameras; helped draft the county’s first police body-worn camera policy; adoption of county-funded study aimed at eliminating racial disparity in police use of force; reform of the County’s School Resource officer policy which led to an almost 60% reduction in student arrests; and successfully advocated for the Fairfax County Public Schools to reform their teacher hiring practices to help reduce discrimination against African American teachers. Under his leadership, the branch was awarded the Thalheimer Award, a national NAACP recognition as the best unit of its size in the country. He also served as the Virginia State Conference NAACP Criminal Justice Committee Chair, where he led the first-ever state-wide Criminal Justice Symposium. Mr. Annan proudly served eight years in the U.S Army. He holds a Master’s of Science in International Relations from Troy University, and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from Tennessee State University.
