The Spinal-Community housing intervention is one that seeks to address the pertinent and emerging concern of social stratification in Singapore’s housing which was raised in a Straits Times newspaper article in January 2018. Precedent findings: Singapore at an urban scale, is seeing presence of affluent and less affluent neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods such as Toa Payoh consists of mostly public housing (HDB) with the absence of landed housings. On the contrary, estates such as Serangoon Gardens or Bukit Timah have no public housing but populated by Landed properties and some private apartments. This disparity of housing typological mix at the neighbourhood level is further exacerbated by prestigious school being located towards within or the precinct of the more affluent neighbourhoods. (Considering that priority admissions are given to students’ who live in the vincinity of the elementary schools) These conditions forms a cycle that incubates social bubbles. From a micro level, ground research and experience have been conducted particularly in Toa Payoh and research have shown a disparity in living conditions between the different HDB blocks which is distinct from its apartment sizes Shared spaces like void decks, corridors and lift lobbies, varies significantly from a block which houses 1 room rental flat to a block that houses entirely with apartments for the elderly to larger units like 4-5rooms flats. This disparity of the shared common spaces could be even out by mixing the unit types of the flats in a block instead of having a homogenous apartment type.

Considering the aforementioned issues in particular at the urban scale, difficulties of overcoming social bubbles caused by social stratification is being incubated by the type of home, school and neighbourhood that an individual spends its formative years in. While it is a social issue that is commonly shunned or swept under the carpet it is essential to address this concern now. Intervention approach: Similar to when the Ethnic Integration Policy (EIP) which was implemented in 1989 to promoted racial integration in HDBs, having to co-locate the entire spectrum of housing typology from rental units to private apartments to landed properties in the same neighbourhood would raise a myriad of doubts. However it is a step forward to burst social bubbles having a neighbourhood and a community with a wider spectrum of social groups. The central spine literally acts like a spine that carries the body of the neighbourhood. The spine holds together a bulk of social activities that ranges from educational institution with facilities (which was previously private and gated) , F&B outlets, supermarkets and retail. The neighbourhood would enjoy large plaza spaces as well as community parks due to the land saved from locating the landed properties on ‘Sky-Land’. The semblance of Landed properties (previously lease hold) on the other hand would stand to benefit from the convenience and shared ammenities once absent from their typology

ASHFORM
by Anthony Wong Ashform is an Integrated Concrete Precast Hub (ICPH) that tackles with the idea of an industrial ecology through leveraging on the waste and facilities from both the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (TWRP) and Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) at a 68 Hectare site at Tuas View Basin. Imminent issues such as depleting landfill sites at Semakau, land intensive sand stockpiles would be significantly reduced with the operation of ASHFORM. ASHFORM primarily feeds of the waste resources of the incinerator which is flyash as a replacing aggregate for non structural concrete production. Other resources such as electricity generated and steam produced by the other facilities would be re-utilised by ASHFORM instead of going to waste. ASHFORM has a unique facade which showcases its daily operation through it production line skin. Each production storey documents a set a storyline in the larger production chapter. ASHFORM would also be tackling the issue of land sprawling concrete production hub further by cutting down the sizes taken by current ICPH significantly by more than half and at the same time produce almost as much output as the current ICPH models in Singapore.

Is an accentuated dinning experience through the fluid spaces that intertwines the surrounding nature into the canteen. The tree-like structural system and the curvaceous form that is derived from the contours of the topography. It acts as an echo to the rich natural terrain that this canteen rests on. Accompanied by materials such as the mirror ceiling highlights the interaction of people and ‘nature’ through the activities within this spaces. The dining experience then becomes a scared experience as this reflection will be a constant reminder how human’s interaction is intertwined
