QUT SCHOOL OF DESIGN HESTIA PROJECT INFORMATION Project Type: Building Type : Location : Site area: GFA:
Academic - Master Studio A University facilities Kevin Grove, Brisbane, Australia 3840m2 9323m2
BRIEF The design seeks to incorporate two concepts. The first - a sleek, fluid form that embodies creativity. The second is a structured form with strong construction lines that aims to represent the rigidity of the real world. This creates a building that has an almost fluid organic shape, yet is created through strong columns and beams - a form which aims to tell students that creativity and reality can both coexist and strengthen each other in the real world.

ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACHES
Since the site is extremly close the residential on the side, the continous machinary noise from the workshop will affect the surrounding residense.
NOISE APPROACHES
N
SUN PATH Brisbane sun path is always moving from east to west leaning toward north side. The pink line has indicated the direction which will recieve the most toxicated heat ray and the blue line would be the delightful sun light
THERMAL APPROACHES the yellow shaded side of the building would high recommend to install heat reflective and resistance facade which help the lower the building tempeture in brisbane climate. Facade that provides shading is essential to include in the design proposal.
Musk Avenue is a relatively busy road but its not included in the noise corridor from the city planning.
LIGHTING APPROACHES The blue shaded side of the building is suitable to be open plan and glazing since its the side that can provide delightful natural lighting for the building interior.
VISION The form of the structure takes inspiration from Professor Greg Lynn, where curves represent the meeting point between the surrounding context and functionality. As seen in the building, curves are the major driving factor of the structure. This is the architects ambition for the future of architecture and other design disciplines that will be facilitated in the building.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Learning studios are flexible, facilitating interactive studio activities that encourage interaction across disciplines. This opens up more options for interdisciplinary courses to be conducted, a practice that can be considered as this mimics multi-disciplinary teams in the professional industry.

With the half in-ground design, the new School of design aims to maintain the low-medium building height of the surrounding Kelvin grove village. This reduces the visual impact to the surroundings, maintaining the urban characteristics of Kelvin Grove, which has a medium height village center that gradually flattens outwards into lower residential lots. This is also in accordance to the Brisbane City Master plan, which designates Kelvin Grove as a master planned suburb not the next city center.

Part 2 : Maritime Museum
South Bank was first established 30 years ago, there are large number of iconic structures and building in the precinct reaching their end of life; whilst there are a lot of building are under-performing, South Bank’s surrounding built environment has considerably evolved and densified.
The form of the design is inspired by sea waves, by imagining the whole museum is the inside of a tsunami wave. The wave, along with the boat and ships inside are frozen in mid-air.
This project is redesigning the South bank base on the future visitors and future economy, reconsidering its role in a broader emerging network of lifestyle precincts.
This forms the main gallery of the museum, with natural and artificial lights of the museum going through the roof and shoot inside of the gallery, creating an underwater scene in the museum.

Traffic is the nightmare of financial activities because it directly increase the most expensive and irreplaceable cost of the business - TIME. Every well developed business city has a over grown transportation system to support people’s movement. Convenient transportation save time and creates opportunity for people. Thus, knowing future south bank transportation is growing with Cross River rail and Brisbane Metro. and expand the advantage of quick and time saving moving system- underground walkway which ignore the road traffic and brings people point to point.
Example of Hong Kong subway system, 10 exit from one station, bring people directly to their spot.

Maritime Museum - Tear of Time
Tear of Time is in a form of huge wave hitting on South Bank. In this wave, its crush on South Bank’s History, Thus, inside the museum, its is include the history of the South Bank and Exhibition of the boats and ships from the past decade.
PART 2 : MARITIME MUSEUM
TEAR OF TIME Master studio B - South Bank Maritime museum Anthony Yung Site area: 7920m2 GFA: 16000m2
MASTER PLANNING In the previous project, South Bank was redesigned to facilitate and support the growth of Brisbane City, the vision of the master plan is to redevelop Southbank into a cultural and art district that make use of the location advantage, attracting tourist and new development into South Bank that enhances the natural resource and unique life style in South Bank. South Bank Maritime museum is located at the most eastern side of the Southbank masterplan, if GOMA and State Library is the final picture of the Art precinct, then the redevelopment of the maritime museum would the end game for Cultural precinct, It would be the new landmark of south Bank, the most populated tourist spot and the Sydney opera on the Brisbane City river view.
FORM DESIGN THE TEAR OF TIME CONCEPT
FLOW OF FORM
The form of the design is inspired by sea waves, by imagining the whole museum is the inside of a tsunami wave. The wave, along with the boat and ships inside are frozen in midair. This forms the main gallery of the museum, with natural and artificial lights of the museum going through the roof and shoot inside of the gallery, creating an underwater scene in the museum.
PEOPLE FLOW The green line has indicated the flow of the population going into the site. there are three major groups of people, vistors from South Bank, Goodwill Bridge and Mater hill station. Since, population are coming from 360, the museum form has to capable to be regonize from any angle and requires more than one entrance or a clear guide for people to approach the museum
CLIMATE The form of the building would also considered the facade coverage to block off the sun beam, which 70% of the northern side is covered by the building form to avoid, damages to the collection in the museum and reduce the use of mechanical ventilation, the choice of material forthe building facade has to also consider the colour which avoid absorbing too much radiation from the sun light.
VOLUME The form has to cover 3 different types of gallery in the museum, 1. The original engine 2. Maritime history of South Bank 3. Tear of time gallery Thus, it requries at least 10 ~ 12 m height of a internal volumnto showcase, all the real size ship and boat collection, and also different kinds of indoor gallery for a varairty of exhibition. Therefore, the internal building height would be around 16m~ 20 m tall from the bottom of the dry dock , raise up to 4 ~ 6 metre from stanley street.

Even though the interior height of the building is up to 16 m, the actual building perspective from Stanley street would only be 4 m tall, since Stanley street is 6 m above the site location and 10 m above the bottom of the dry dock, thus, the organic sea wave form will not be too out standing or overwhelming to the surrounding facilities.

This camera angle is taken from the featured ramp look into the Tear of time gallery. The idea of tear of time is not just applied on to the exterior of the museum but also inside the gallery, the idea of frozen tsunami wave which freezes time and space, which create a dramatic scene where the boat are floating in the air. With the ceiling lights located behind the designed diffusers ceiling panels, the artificial lights and natural lighting from outside create a miracle space , named the tear of time gallery.
The floating boat collection in mid air is supported by an extremely high strength system- tungsten ceiling hangers connected to the framing above the space frame building structure, thus, it requires a set of twisted tungsten wire which is relatively thin compare to steel structure but provide enough strength to carry the boats. Therefore, the hanging system will not affect the floating scene that the gallery would like to create.

BRIEF The form of the design is initially inspired from aerodynamic, which is redirecting winds by designed form and shape, using natural forces to bring benefits to human living environment. The idea is applied into subtropical climate design, such as buildings in Brazil and Australia, using streamline shape to maximize the cooling effect from the natural wind flow. Maximizing the wind force would be resulting in great air ventilation with the least amount of window exposing under the Brazilian sun light, allowing to reduce the use of air-conditioning and lead the whole community to achieve a green and sustainable living style.
DESIGN CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT INITIAL STAGE
Initial idea of wind flow and traping wind and also the green enviroment of apartment living.

BUILDING DESIGN AND VISION OF THE COMMUNITY
CONCEPT BUILDING To achieve a healthy living environment and sustainable community, the design in the apartment is trying to engage the communication between neighbours , intend to reduce the social isolation syndrome that happens in apartments. Each unit is designed to own its safety and privacy, with the proposed communal spaces , kids can play with their friends freely in a safe place, elderly will have more chance to be in-touch with the young blood, increase the communication between neighbours, engaging connection between individual family and the community.

Its a powerful moment to increase and stimulate the sens, to feel the weight of the cliff and the depth of the crevices, the Strength of the water and the opennes of the horizon; its a palce for contempalation and landmark within the landscape.
CENTRE OF REBIRTH To choose to rebuild with the old, with history, with its broken pieces and its devastating pain, the deepened sense of identity that ought to be demonstrated by the New Design Centre transcends simple rebuilding; it is a process of rebirth. Never turning its back on the past, the new building erupts from inside the existing walls, having its footing firmly rooted inside the old. The rough sandstone exterior reflects the courage and toughness that has been demonstrated by the Iraqi people while the green interior depicts a nurturing scene they desperately need. The void at the centre of the building is inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon - an indispensable element in the imagination of Iraq. The dreamy qualities of the garden is an oasis for art and thoughts, appropriate for a new design centre. At the centre of the void, the grand stair offers its onlookers more than a means of access. The upward procession of the stair might be daunting but amongst the surrounding terraced landscape of trees and flowers, the softened sunlight cast through the canvas above and the interactions of the people along this journey, the onlooker is reminded of the beauty in this world. Then, as they emerge from the top level, Baghdad is laid bare in front of the onlooker. From this angle, the realities of the city is heightened. The onlooker is given a fresh perspective; perhaps, a renewed perspective of the city’s future, too.
