CONCEPT / ‘REVERIE’ STATE OF MIND / PROGRAMME RESPONSE

REFLECTION, CONTEMPLATION, ILLUMINATION

‘Reverie’ encourages the self-awareness of its inner-city users, to reflect upon one’s internal thoughts and intuition to achieve a higher state of contemplation, reflection, and individual awareness.

The site provides a contrast to the chaos of the Melbourne CBD, allowing users to not only escape this busy district to the nearby “calmer” territory of West Melbourne, but to assist in transporting the inidividual’s mind to a

Lace Morphology is a work that investigates the relation between aesthetic impact and a simple structural logic. Following a biomimetic approach, the sculptural lighting installation receives inpiration for its pattern and structure through the layered composition of the butterfly wing; intricate details viewed at a microscopic scale within nature.

As such, the form (derived from a tessellated assembly of the Gyroid minimal surface) results in a complex interweaving surface arrangement, allowing two layers to alternate their positions throughout the design. Through the use of parametric techniques and laser-cutting fabrication methods, the production and assembly process of over 600 individual parts was made feasible over a matter of weeks.

9

10

BIOMIMETIC INSPIRATION: LOOKING TOWARDS NATURE Looking towards biomimicry for design inpiration, the complex beauty of the butterfly species and their transitory nature.

TRIPLY PERIODIC SURFACES: THE GYROID A technique involving the repetition of the Gyroid (triply periodic minimal surface) within a three-dimensional grid has been utilised along with trimming methods to generate unique forms using clever angles.

Viewing the micro-structure of the butterfly wings, the relationship between this and the chilarity of the Gyroid minimal surface becomes recognisable. Microscopic images of the butterfly wing further demonstrate a double-layer structure (macro and micro layer) and cell pattern; similar traits to the composition of the Gyroid.

This technique allows the beautiful curvatures and interweaving spatial qualities of the Gyroid surface to be accentuated in new ways through the assistance of parametric tools (Grasshopper 3D) to generate unique, functional and aesthetic qualities.

11

The Gyroid (above); a triply periodic surface that is infinitely curved. The complex curvatures and interweaving qualities of the Gyroid minimal surface allow for its unique quality to be repeated in a grid and “grow, enabling its construction at built at various scales to suit various design briefs.

‘SWARM’ LOGIC Looking towards a biomimetic concept, the overall form development is based upon the collective behaviour of self-organised systems within nature. Using this idea, various asymmetrical forms have been inspired by the transitional and emergent behaviour of biological systems evident through swarm intelligence. Trimming a box grid of Gyroid surfaces has allowed for a more natural and transitional effect throughout the design.

03 C O N S T R U C T I O N DESIGN CONSTRUCTION DESIGN (2016) CASE STUDY: IVANHOE GRAMMAR SCHOOL (MCBRIDE CHARLES RYAN ARCHITECTS)

Used as a case study, the Ivanhoe Grammar School by McBride Charles Ryan Architects (2015) demonstrates the use of various construction processes and detailing within the architecture and building industry.

Utilising knowledge and understanding of construction design, an axonometric drawing and 1:20 scale model of a pre-existing section of the Ivanhoe Grammar School was created in order to gain a deeper understanding on ways in which construction theory is put into practice. Importantly, this task highlighted the need for architects, builders and project managers to work together and evaluate a building through stages of the construction process in order make technical choices and implement alternatives when necessary.

Time-management skills and teamwork were major factors in completing the project successfully within the allocated time-frame.
