Tiny marked 2 Premier Jumeau This precious Bébé, known as Mimi, is from the earliest time the Jumeau firm created these amazing dolls in the image of a child rather than a lady doll. At only 11.5 inches and marked 2, she is the crème de la crème. With her adorable childlike face adorned with large almond amber eyes, perfectly cut and evenly placed, and set in ivory-tinted bisque with pale closed lips and smoothly stroked brows. At one time, she had a skin wig, and the remnant of the cap remains intact over her cork pate. Her bisque is in excellent condition and free of any repair or damage. Tiny garnet-colored earrings adorn her small ears. She is on the early eight-ball jointed body with the blue Medaille d’Or Stamp. Her white leather shoes have stayed with her and are incised: 2 E. Jumeau Med.OR 1878 (in a cartouche) $9800

31” Simon Halbig/Handwerck This all original, beautiful 31” doll, a collaboration by the Simon Halbig & Handwerck Doll firms, has the most enchanting presence. Huge brown sleep eyes seem to come alive with a wistful glow and her painting of features is delicate and soft. She is wearing her original curly blonde mohair wig, an original and intricate lace dress over a complex full slip, antique white leather shoes, and a blue and cream hat made of antique fabrics. I have gifted her with a pretty enamel pin and blue earrings. She is a darling child and easily sits or stands. Her body has the red Handwerck stamp and is in excellent original condition. Marked only with a 7. $1750

Fogel.Jan.indd 5

Tiniest Breveté Bébé Tiny 10” Breveté Bru Bébé, un petit trésor. She is a darling gem in her diminutive size with gorgeous blue eyes and palest bisque. She is in generally excellent condition and is on her sturdy, clean original kid body with daintily modeled bisque hands. She has antique leather shoes; antique undergarments, and she has a golden mohair wig over her cork pate. An adorable floral bonnet with blue flowers compliments her beautiful eyes. Her ears are pierced, and she will come with a dainty pair of turquoise blue earrings. What a priceless morsel! $17,250 plus S&H Insurance included.

JDK Googly for Rosie O’Niell - Meet an adorable 11” J.D. Kestner Googly made for Rosie O’Neill on a fabulous, jointed composition toddler body with jointed knees and “starfish” hands. This darling doll is in pristine condition. She has huge chocolate glass eyes and a mischievous expression with her watermelon smile and side glancing gaze! Our little one is begging to come to play at your house and she promises to be a very nice (and maybe only a little naughty) girl. Original organdy dress, original shoes, and sweet cap. Excellent condition! Insurance included. $7600 Adorable Winter Candy Container - Happy Holidays! This cheerful A&M candy container is so charming and appears to be in wonderful original condition. His arms are laden with antique toys and a wee lamb is his companion. He is the perfect secret keeper with his hidden bon-bon compartment revealed when you lift his top from his legs on the stand. He is about 10” tall and comes in an original 19th-century box with a Christmas litho decoration and Dresden trim. What better way to say Merry Christmas or tuck in a special Christmas surprise? Certain to become a family treasure! $1595

The Quest A Collecting Column by Linda Edward

The doll makers of Germany and France provided dolls to be costumed to represent people from many different countries and provinces. These dolls now showcase a history of world costume which has largely faded out of use in daily life in the era of blue jeans and tee shirts.

W

hen Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days was first published in 1873, the notion of traveling the globe in such a short time was pure science fiction. Today we can circumnavigate the globe in a matter of hours or while sitting in the comfort of our own homes be transported to distant locales through film and digital magic. So too can we be taken on journeys to far-off lands and times past through doll collecting. Dolls have often been used as souvenirs of foreign travel, from the days of the Grand Tour through the capitols of Europe and the great trade fairs of the 19th century into the burgeoning market for middle-class tourism of the first half of the 20th century, dolls in colorful costumes from exotic locales found their way into many US homes. During the first half of the 20th century these world costume dolls were of great interest to

Bru Jeune 7 - Beautiful 18” Bru 7 Bébé with the gorgeous plump childlike facial features we crave. Huge blue paperweight eyes, peaches and cream tinted bisque, lushly accented lips and a tongue tip as though about to speak, and darkly swept lashes framed by gentle brows. This beauty is circa 1883-85; the onset of the Henri Chevrot era. Exceptional in every way! Her original golden silk frock with matching hat is slightly frail with the passage of time, yet certainly strong enough to last decades into the future. She is truly exceptional and in overall excellent condition. Please Call, Text or Email for additional information. Terms Available.

The Quest (continued from page 10) of national and regional costumes. The vast majority of these dolls were offered in sizes ranging from 5” to 12” making them an easy size to include into almost any doll collector’s cabinet. In addition to bisque headed examples, other world dolls have come from indigenous sources. Oftentimes created by artists, cottage industries or social collaboratives. The range of this type of doll includes dolls of many materials, styles and designs. The collections gathered in the 1900 to 1950 period are once again returning to the marketplace and although rich in history and detail these dolls continue to remain among some the most affordable dolls on offer today. Many of these world costume dolls were used in schools and museums in America to broaden the horizons of students both young and old. Today these dolls fit perfectly into our collections of antique and vintage dolls, revealing a rapidly passing world where unique national costumes indicated pride, place and heritage. Letters Dorothy Heizer

Dear Antique Doll Collector,

For years I have enjoyed the magazine. In the past I did a series of articles on some of my dollhouses. I was going to do an article on my Heizer dolls but never got around to it. I lived in Essex Fells, New Jersey, for 40 years and knew Dorothy’s son and a very close friend of hers. I have a large collection including a “Maya” doll that was pictured in a newsprint article that was included in Sue Nile’s article (“The Extraordinary Artistry of Dorothy Wendell Heiser,” Sue Nile, author, Antique Doll Collector, Nov/Dec 2021, pp.38-44). I hope to share information with her. I always enjoy this magazine and thank you for continuing it after Donna retired. Kind Regards, Anne B. Timpson, Chatham, MA

“Those Kentucky Ladies” article

Hello Antique Doll Collector, I am looking for an article “Those Kentucky Ladies” about Annie and Orlenia Combs. It was published in October 2008, Vol 2, No 9, pp. 42-54. Is there any way that I might get a copy of this article? Thank you. Janet Rawls

NOTE FROM ADC: We are so glad you asked about the archive of past issues! Antique Doll Collector has been reviewing the older issues and scanning them to add to the collection on our Back Issues website page and our digital subscription section on issuu.com. As soon as they are scanned and bookmarked for easy use and searching, they are added to the digital publications and the link is added to antiquedollcollector.com. Most of our past issues are completed for scanning back to 2001 and just the final editing is still being added. Please let Antique Doll Collector know if there is a particular back issue you would like to see quickly, so it can be put at the top of the list. Again, as soon as they are ready and uploaded, they are added to the Back Issues page on antiquedollcollector.com, so check frequently for new copies. The previously added issues do go back through 2009 for the Annual Collection and the individual 2009 issues. When you see a link on the Back Issues page it will go directly to the purchase page for that issue.

November/December 2021 issue

Dear Antique Doll Collector, I want to say thank you for a beautiful digital edition gift magazine. It is frustrating that I received a time out message and the magazine disappeared, not to be retrieved. A gift that takes itself back again. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the issue as far as I could get before I was “timed out”. Thank you for the gift. Betty Ashley

The Grandes Dames of Jumeau By Melanie Luther

Art postcard depicting the Trocadero from the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Printer: Raphael Tuck et Fils, Ltd., Paris. Serie 587, No. 6.

I

n 1878, over 13 million people passed through the doors of the Paris Exposition Universelle. Today, antique French doll collectors can only imagine how many of these attendees were there to view the displays of fabulous bisque dolls from the well-known doll maker Jumeau. In this article you will see stunning examples of many of the grand sized French poupées by Jumeau that were likely to have been displayed at such an Exposition. From May 1878 through November of the same year, Parisians and international guests flocked to Paris to see the novel and the grandiose at the Exposition Universelle. The categories ranged from such ethereal works as sculpture and crystal, to technical designs for new machinery. International juries judged various exhibits, awarding medals of gold, silver, and bronze to the lucky recipients. Nearly 40 countries participated, and the grounds spanned over 60 acres. The extensive grand structures, in particular the Trocadero Palace, representing France, included balconies and lavish galleries. The exhibits housed not only state-of-the-art examples of necessary items but also featured such “fancies” as candy confections, and more importantly, poupées!

Left: Beautiful Exhibition-Size French Bisque Portrait Poupée by Jumeau - 29” (74 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, rose blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth with shaded and outlined lips, separatelymodeled pierced ears, original blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French kid poupée body with shapely torso, gusset-jointing of elbows, hips, and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 11 (head and shoulders) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (torso). Comments: Jumeau, circa 1878, the portrait face of the 1878 era poupée quickly evolved into the Jumeau bebe, and is very rare to find as a poupée. Value Points: rare grand size poupée with very beautiful face and splendid eyes, lovely antique lace dress and silk bonnet, undergarments, leather shoes. (Courtesy of Theriault’s Doll Auctions) Below: Grand Size, Luxurious and Beautiful, Early Jumeau Portrait-Face Fashion - Marks: 12 (on shoulderplate). 34”. Pressed bisque swivel head on bisque shoulderplate, brown almond-shaped paperweight eyes, dark eyeliner, mauve-blushed eyelids, feathered and brushstroked brows, closed mouth, shaded and accented lips, separately modeled applied pierced ears with blushing detail, original blonde mohair wig and cork pate, old muslin body with stitched joints and leather forearms, two-piece rose silk print gown with lace trim, antique black silk and organza bonnet, old pink leather boots. Commentary: Pierre-Francois Jumeau, circa 1876. An exceptionally beautiful face with lustrous patina and delicate facial decoration, rarelyfound larger size; sturdy body. Theimer’s Jumeau Book states “this model was sold by Jumeau at the Philadelphia Exhibition, not only as dressed fashion dolls, but also, heads and bodies as parts to his wholesale customers”. (Courtesy of Frasher’s Doll Auctions)

Furthermore, unlike the previous two expositions, the 1878 event lacked a special category for inexpensive goods! Parisians seemed to be saying that the “bigger is better” phrase was being trumped by “bigger is more magnificent” — a philosophy that was reflected in the entire Exposition and marked the recovery of France from the Franco-Prussian War. Paris became a city of refinement once again, with the culture requiring abundant luxury items. Dollmaker Jumeau delivered with a Grande Dame poupée, worthy of Exposition competition. Even the current print media reported on the statuesque French poupée and her opulent “needs.” In fact, Demorest’s Monthly Magazine described the dolls shown at the 1878 Paris Exposition as follows: “There are dolls that are grand ladies and dolls that are nurses, as well as dolls that are babies. There are dolls whose jewels are real diamonds; whose tiny mouchoir of exquisite lace is perfumed with attar of roses; whose toilet table costs a sum sufficient to furnish a small house, whose little Venetian hand glass is framed in wrought silver, and who is

furnished with cosmetics, ivory brushes and delicate pigment in cut glass bottles, for tinting the nails, touching up the eyebrows, and adding to the color, or the whiteness of the cheeks.” The judges at the Exposition, clearly impressed with the grand scheme of French doll manufacturing prepared a report that reinforced the public view of this luxurious enterprise. The report of the International Jury of the 1878 Paris Exhibition stated: “The making of dolls is essentially Parisian. It is one of the most important branches of the toy industry and has accomplished the greatest progress since 1867. There are 21 exhibits representing 57 doll makers.” While notably one of the 57 esteemed dollmakers, Jumeau was not a newcomer to showcasing his winning style. This firm received a variety of accolades that were associated with prior international Exhibitions as early as 1851. (Sidebar) At the Paris Exposition ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

Condition: generally excellent, the body is one size large but appears original, perhaps in design for use as Exhibition model. Marks: H 8 (red lettering on head). Comments: Pierre-Francois Jumeau, circa 1872, the model was likely produced in the firm’s newly-built 1872 porcelain works, specifically for his exhibition at the 1872 L’Exhibition Universelle in Vienna. Value Points: the rarity of the doll is rivaled only by its superb beauty, unique portraiture and finest painting and bisque, exquisite costume. Few other examples are known to exist. Universelle 1878, the Jumeau legacy blossomed with the Gold Medal. The firm continued to garner even more awards in the late 1800s with the addition of the child-like Bebe, as interest in the fashion poupée began to fade. Over the years, as I assembled my collection of French Fashion dolls, I often wondered about the elegant, but imposing Jumeau poupées that span 27 to 34 inches – the so-called exhibition models. I speculated as to why these grand-sized models were created and costumed. My research yielded some answers, but I still wondered how today’s collectors are able to display the same monumental treasures that graced the enormous exhibit halls of the Expositions of the 1800s: Antique Doll Collector invites any collector who owns one of these “Grand Dames” to contact us through antiquedoll@gmail.com and share information. We wish to thank Barbara Frasher of Frasher’s Doll Auctions, Oak Grove, Missouri, and Florence Theriault of Theriault’s Doll Auctions, Annapolis, Maryland for the generous use of their photographs.

Collecting Ginny Doll Clones By Donna W. Brown hat kind of dolls fascinated little girls seventy years ago and what do they still yearn for today? Young girls want a doll they can dress up in beautiful outfits with adorable accessories. They want new dolls and clothes often, not just as gifts on holidays. They want to pack it all up in a case to take to a friend’s house, to grandma’s, to play with. It’s what little girls have always wanted. Before World War II, children received very few toys unless their family was wealthy. Most little girls had one or two dolls to play with and often they were ragdolls sewn by family members. By the late 1940s prosperity had taken over and suddenly the toy market in the USA thrived. Dolls were now lining store shelves, and companies began looking for ways to promote their dolls to the masses. Though many of the doll companies prevalent in the 1940s had modest beginnings in the

1920s and 1930s, most flourished in the 1940s. One of these was the Vogue Doll Corporation. Vogue was the brainchild of Jennie H. Graves in 1922. Her venture into the industry began when a friend asked her to sew doll clothing and dress dolls for a charity. It turned out the friend was secretly selling the dolls, so Jennie decided to sell them herself. She began with importing German dolls, sewing the clothes and selling them to a department store in Boston. Soon Jennie Graves was purchasing only Americanmade dolls. By 1942 her 8-inch composition toddler dolls were selling very well. In 1948, she began selling an 8-inch hard plastic toddler doll made by the Commonwealth Plastic Company. The high-quality dolls were dressed with great detail and immediately they were successful. Their attire was related to themes such as holidays, historical characters and international dolls.

ABOVE: Illustration for an article on Vogue Ginny’s success in Playthings, August 1956. LEFT: Vogue Ginny ad in Playthings promising ideas to stimulate sales, December 1953.

Finally, in 1950 Jennie came upon her best idea yet. She had well known doll sculptor, Bernard Lipfert, design an exclusive hard-plastic doll for Vogue with unique eyes that opened and closed. The doll was one of the first hard plastic 8-inch toddler dolls and immediately it was a hit. The next year, 1951, the doll was named Ginny after Jennie’s daughter, Virginia Graves. Ginny dolls continued to evolve and wore gorgeous clothing that was handmade of quality fabric with exquisite trimmings. Early Ginnys had mohair wigs and were strung with straight legs. In the late 1950s Ginny was a walker with jointed knees and hair of Dynell or Saran in a wide selection of colors. As time went on, Vogue sold many Ginny items. There was a matching wooden bedroom set which included a wardrobe, clothes rack, boudoir chair, rocking chair and bed. There were also Ginny paper dolls, wardrobe trunk, gym with swings and slide, a corrugated cardboard house for Ginny, and a set of pearls for the little girl owner with a matching set for Ginny. Now as any company knows, once you have a popular line, competitors will copy it as closely as possible, often using inferior materials to cut into your profit. Ginny was so popular that there were soon over two dozen companies marketing Ginny clones. Some were large corporations with their own factories and large marketing budgets, others were small companies that purchased dolls and clothing to sell locally.

Ginny’s thick hair was originally styled in a flip but later she had a seam down the back of her head, with braids. Most of the clones mimicked Ginny’s hair styles and colors. Many of the inferior Ginny clones were actually 7 ½ or 7 ¾ inches tall, their hair was thin and the color of their limbs were a different shade from their bodies. Many of her outfits copied the Ginny doll clothing down to the colors and accessories. Ginger’s hair was in a shoulder length flip or braids just like Ginny. Ginger went through several transitions and can be found with straight legs, a straight leg walker, and bent knee walkers. An undressed Ginger cost only $1.60 in 1954 while Ginny cost $1.98. Elite Creations marketed a Ginny clone doll named Vicki with both straight and jointed knees. She had an array of costumes including clown, bride, nurse and majorette. Unfortunately, several different dolls were used for Vicki making her difficult to identify. Her clothes mimicked Ginny’s, but they used poorer quality materials and had less detail. Beehler Arts was the parent company of both Virga and Fortune Toys, Inc., and the doll parts were often interchanged. This makes the dolls tricky to identify unless they are found in an original outfit or box. Fortune made two Ginny clone dolls, Pam and Ninette. Pam was popular due to her extensive wardrobe and lovely outfits at an economical price. She sold for $1.98 and clothing for 99 cents at discount stores such as Woolworth. Virga made many Ginny clones, and though their dolls were midlevel quality their sales were high due to the company constantly looking for unique ways to market their dolls. In 1954, Virga introduced their Play-Mates series which sold dressed dolls for $1.98 in simple dresses and $2.49 for their DeLuxe Play-Mates series. The Play-Mates travel trunk was sold with a doll and additional outfits for $3.98. By 1957, Virga gave the Play-Mates a riding outfit, artist smock, and wedding gown. Though they did not put labels in the clothing, they can be easily identified by the donut snaps. In 1955, a new series came out called Lolly-Pops with pastel hair with matching dresses. In 1957, the Lolly-Pops 32

Some may consider the Madame Alexander’s 8-inch toddler doll, known as Wendykins, a version of Ginny clone, but due to their superiority in both construction and design, not to mention the array of unique costumes, they are in a league of their own. Ginny clones often have no markings but can be identified by their finger shapes, arm hooks, and feet. Some have fingers that are formed together, and some feet have molded shoes, toes, toes with dimples or no toes at all. Carol J. Stover’s book, Small Dolls of the 40s & 50s, is a necessity for any collector. It contains extensive photos to help with identifying Ginny clones. If you have a desire to collect Ginny clones, advice may go in many different directions and varies from doll to doll. Some collectors choose one doll and try to collect all the different styles of the doll that were sold. Then they attempt to find every outfit that was available. This may take years to accomplish but like a scavenger hunt, it is so much fun. Others like to vary their collection by purchasing dolls from many companies that are wearing the same type of clothing such as all cowgirls, brides or majorettes. Amateur collectors simply find rescue dolls and enjoy cleaning the dolls, giving them new hair styles and then dressing them in whatever outfits they can find. Whether you like a wonderful hodgepodge of dolls or a pristine collection of mint in box dolls, Ginny clones are a perfect place to start.

Come Alive ON THE

unraku is the name commonly used for ningyojoruri which literally means puppets and storytelling. Donald Keene in his excellent book, Bunraku, The Art of the Japanese Puppet Theatre states “unlike puppets and marionettes in other parts of the world, which have almost always been considered unworthy of the serious theatregoer’s attention, the puppet theatre in Japan has long been accepted as a highly refined dramatic art.” Bunraku is considered such an important part of Japanese culture that it was designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2003. Dr. Jukka O. Miettinen of the Theater Academy Helsinki wrote: “Bunraku, a form of puppet theater, created during the early Edo period (1603–1868), is without doubt the most spectacular tradition of puppetry in the whole world. Its puppets, approximately one meter high, are manipulated by black-robed puppeteers on a wide stage, while narrators chant the story in a highly expressive manner to the accompaniment of shamisen music.” Written evidence exists from the Heian period 794–1185 that mentions travelling groups of puppeteers, using simple, one-man-operated puppets. At the same time another form of art, similarly practiced by travelling artists, was storytelling. In the 16th century these two art forms would combine with the musical accompaniment of the three-stringed shamisen, resulting in Bunraku. While Bunraku had its inception in Kyoto, and was developed in Edo (Tokyo), it is with Osaka that this form of entertainment would reach its golden age.

In 1684 the celebrated chanter Takemoto Gidayu established the Takemoto Theatre in Osaka. Like most prosperous ventures, the rapid success of the puppet theater took a team. In addition to Takemoto the team consisted of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, considered the greatest playwright in Japanese history, and Takeda Izumo, a famous theater owner and manager with money and technical knowhow. The number of theaters continued to grow. In the mid-19th century Uemura Bunrakuken opened a theater which became the toast of Osaka. In fact, his theater was so popular that his name became synonymous with the art form which we call Bunraku to this day. In time the puppets became more sophisticated in order to create even more realism. They were given animated facial features and became so large (one half to two-thirds the size of an average human) that it required three puppeteers to control one puppet. The lead performer is responsible for the head and right arm (it takes at least 25-30 years to become a lead performer): A second performer is in charge of the left arm (this requires at least 15 years training): The third performer is responsible for the leg movement (requiring 10 years training). The first time the three-puppeteer format was used was in 1734. The puppeteers are dressed in black, making them nearly invisible and allowing the audiences’ eye to focus only on the puppet. About 40 or 50 puppets are used in a single play and if taken care of properly a puppet can be used for 150 years.

“It has been said the puppets are able to convey more emotions than humans. Each puppet displays kata movements, typical of all human beings, and fura movements specific to the characters. A mie is a sudden pose struck in dramatic fashion, often accompanied, off stage, by strike of the clappers. Good fura requires flow while timing is critical to kata. Male puppets have bold sweeping moves while those of the females are more refined and detailed.” (source: Web-Japan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan). And while the puppets may be the main characters, the story would be nothing without the narrator and musical accompaniment. The narrator’s intonation and facial expressions convey so much emotion. The libretto is in a special book in which the narrator himself has written the kanji...perhaps this allows him to become even more in tune with the story. The musician and narrator work as one and in fact will be together throughout their lives, virtually inseparable.

ABOVE and BELOW: Soon it was time for the puppeteers to return to the stage for the next performance and it was time for us to return to Kyoto with memories that would last a lifetime.

We were able to view the puppets up close. Each puppet has a generic frame with different heads and costumes attached to create a different character depending on the performance. There are about 50 different wooden heads available, each depicting a particular character type ranging from tragic male heroes to old women and everything in between. And then there is the exceptional costuming from opulent kimonos for puppets portraying aristocrats to plain attire for the puppet that plays a commoner.

Visiting with the puppeteers was an incredible experience. For it is the puppeteer that gives the puppet life. Besides the black clothing, one of the first things I noticed about the attire of the lead performer, Kiritake Kanjuro III, were his butai-geta (stage clogs). His geta, made of wood and padded in straw to make them quiet, were nearly a foot high. I immediately thought… how does someone walk in something so tall? The purpose, we learned, is so he is taller than his two partners, enables the doll to have extra height needed on the stage, and gives the foot puppeteer more room to maneuver. Following his father’s path, Kanjuro, born in 1953, started his career at 14, becoming a disciple of Minosuke Yoshida who at nearly 90 is now the oldest living puppeteer. Kanjuro started with the puppets’ feet, then moved on to the left hand, and finally after nearly 30 years became the lead puppeteer allowed to manipulate the head. Absolutely amazing dedication. The respect shown to the lead performer by the other two puppeteers is evident. However, it is the teamwork of these three men that bring dolls to life.
