The Heart of a Child:
The Auction of Carol Corson’s Doll Collection Reported by Elizabeth Ann Coleman
C
arol Corson gave her life to children and even in death will influence another generation with her financial gift, through the amazing sale of her inspiringly varied doll collection, to the Quaker school that was her second home and family for decades. Eager, room-filling, onsite bidders vied with phone A small selection of Kamkin kids delighted attendees at Withington Auction’s “The Carol Corson Doll bidders at the landmark sale Collection,” held on October 20, 2022. for Marcia and Larry Leizure of Withington, Inc. as lot after lot passed expectations. Schoenhut collectors eagerly chased storied, often one of a kind, examples from the Corson “bible” on the topic. While most of the dolls represented children, there was a varied cluster of babies, a few ladies, and gentlemen, but one could easily see children for children were what captured Carol’s heart as a doll collector. Cloth dolls from her home turf around Philadelphia—homemade and commercial—were favorites. Kamkins, a specialty of the nearby Atlantic City, with practical yet fashionable wardrobes, engaged Carol in a quest for more heritage information to share. Not to be ignored were French bébés that with their chubby child torsos reminded Carol of her own school age charges. With these, Steiners held a particular fascination, especially the rarer, smaller sizes. And, of course, particular crowd pleasers were those mid-19th century Izannah Walker dolls that looked like they had broken away from a two-dimensional American primitive portrait painting
and turned themselves into threedimensional children. After all, her beloved “John Thayer” got up off his sofa and hit an out-of-the-park recordsetting hammer bid of $62,000 plus buyer’s premium. And, yes, there were junior collectors bidding, buying, and taking home traditional play dolls—Japanese Ichimatsu—from which to learn. While the attending young collectors will never have met Carol Corson, her doll children will continue to stimulate youthful minds and will also give unexpected pleasures for years to come to collectors of all ages.
Above: This 15-inch Schoenhut “Schnickle-Fritz” appeared on page 150, illustration 313, in Carol’s book, Schoenhut Dolls: A Collector’s Encyclopedia (Hobby House Press, 1993). John Thayer, a rare Izannah Walker boy doll, passed down in the Thayer family, astounded bidders with a hammer price of $62,000. 8

The Quest A Collecting Column by Linda Edward
The Fate of the Common German Bisque Doll
R
ecently I was reading through the latest journal from the Doll Collectors of America and I was struck by a piece written by one member who was reminiscing about the first antique doll they ever purchased. The writer talked about how beautiful the doll was and how special it felt to find and acquire it. The thrill of that first, long ago collection foundation was still palpable years later. The doll in question was an AM Alma. This reminisce immediately resonated with me as I began to think about the first antique doll I ever purchased. She was an Armand Marseille 370 and I was thrilled beyond measure over having finally purchased a real antique doll and I thought her beautiful indeed. This started me thinking about the ups and downs this genre of doll has experienced during my 45 years of involvement with the hobby. Referred to today as "Dolly-faced" dolls these common German-made bisque dolls were a staple of the toy world for sixty of more years in one form or another. Their pretty faces were beloved by children and their neutral expressions allowed for boundless play value.
My first antique doll, an Armand Marseille mold 370, still stands today among my other bisque dolls. Despite my ever-wandering interests within doll collecting she still brings a smile to my face as I am transported to the beginning of my adventures.

There is a reason that these more commonly found dolls were made in such vast quantities, they are just plain pretty. This is the link that connects us to the world which created them, the children who loved and dreamed over them, and to the collectors who preceded us as well as those who will follow us. Dolls: AM 390, Kämmer & Reinhardt no mold #, Heinrich Handwerck no mold #.
I find it immensely interesting therefore to study the trajectory of these dolls within the hobby of collecting. They have gone through many iterations of interest and price through the past one hundred years. As our hobby was growing and taking shape in the early decades of the 20th century the majority of collectors were pursuing the chinas, parians, woodens, waxes and paper-mache dolls of the previous century.
Bisque-headed dolls were largely considered "too recent" to be of much interest. By the 1960s and '70s this perspective was changing and new collectors found these dolls quaint and desirable. Because the monetary value of antiques (or any collectible) is driven by collector demand the prices for German bisque dolls has risen and fallen over the years as collector interests have waxed and waned. continued on page 20 ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

Mystery Doll Dear Antique DOLL Collector, Hello, can you please help me identify my (what I believe is Victorian) doll couple. I have searched, and cannot find anything about them. I do believe they were made in Poland, but for the western market, as none of the Polish dolls I can find match these, or their clothing. They remind me of Charles Dickens character Dolls. Any help would be great. Thank you for your time! Betty Browning bettyboop6528@yahoo.com

For example, if we follow the average retail price of three models, in good condition, we see excellent, original condition examples continue to command higher than average prices.* These figures are of course, just a snap shot and do not include collector trends for various other sizes but what we see by following this history is that as collector interests have shifted to other types of dolls, the market value on the more commonly found molds of German dolls has reacted in kind. But market trends notwithstanding, the dolls themselves have not changed. They are every bit as
lovely as they have always been and they are every bit as important to the history of doll making as they ever were. To really preserve and showcase the dolls of the late 19th and early 20th centuries the common German bisque doll deserves a place in the story of dolls and it is we collectors who have the power and the responsibility to conserve these dolls for future generations. The fate of the common German bisque doll is in our hands and I encourage you to take another look at this genre within the world of antique dolls. *See the chart above.
Rare molds are thrilling to find, characters can make us laugh and cry, but any doll display can be enhanced by the inclusion of a variety of dolly-faced molds as well. An Alt, Beck & Gottschalk 1362, Heinrich Handwerck 109, and Max Handwerck doll display very nicely along side the smaller Simon Halbig character mold 600 doll.

Gaithersburg Doll Show Review The 181st Eastern National Gaithersburg Doll Show & Sale Celebrating 50 Years! The Eastern National Doll Show celebrated 50 years of excellence when the doors opened on their 181st show December 2nd. The familiar Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, Maryland was, again, host to the two-day celebration, which was created by Hubert and Mary Bellman in 1972. The show is now run by their daughter, Stephanie, who has brought her daughter, Mary, in to help. Antique DOLL Collector magazine congratulates the Bellman family! This year’s show was magical with abundant displays of beautiful dolls, teddy bears and accessories. A special display case shared a poignant array of memorabilia from past shows. As always, there were avid collectors searching for that perfect item. And, many of the country’s top dealers were in attendance, including Valerie Fogel with her Beautiful Bébés and Connie Lowe, who virtually sold out of her fabulous Stellas and friends. Many collectors, as well as dealers, remarked that this year’s show was the best Gaithersburg in years. So, once again, we are pleased to report the shows are back…especially this one!
A special display case contained 50 years of memorabilia from the Eastern National Gaithersburg Doll Shows. 22

17th Century Dutch Dollhouses

n July 1718, the German family Von Uffenbach visited the home of the Brandt family in Amsterdam. Zacharias Conrad had received Miss Hendrina Brandt’s permission to come to her parents’ house and see the famous dollhouse. This dollhouse, created by Hendrina’s mother, Petronella Oortman (1656-1716), was quite a tourist attraction at the time. The daughter showed all aspects of the house, including details such as the clothing of the dolls, since the Uffenbachs were curious about the Dutch women’s style of undergarments. Hendrina conveyed that all 24

clothes could be removed to be washed, a process that took two weeks. Collecting the homely world in miniature was a pastime for very wealthy female citizens of Dutch society. As women in the 17th and 18th centuries could inherit and keep control over their own money after marriage, they could spend their wealth at will. A very small group of ladies, mostly belonging to mercantile families, had the financial resources to commission a cabinet to be made following their specific requirements. Ladies like Petronella managed the entire building procedure themselves—from dealing with the cabinet maker, sorting out materials, deciding on numbers of rooms, to the upholsterers and furniture makers, instructing seamstresses and linen weavers, painters, metal and woodworkers, and so forth. Most collectors lived in Amsterdam, as this city was the center of the trading networks of the Dutch East and West India Companies. It was the main port of entrance of exotic luxury materials such as tortoiseshell, ivory, silk, amber, and ebony. Certain items the women commissioned abroad, such as porcelain from China and Japan, or brought in from afar, like miniature shells and conches. Moreover, Amsterdam was brimming with very skilled artists and craftspeople.

Overall, the focal point was not so much on the exterior of the house but rather on the interior architecture. Like an actual house, there is a hallway, reception room, kitchens, library, bedrooms, laundry, storage, maids’ chamber, and nursery. A dollhouse, as a small feminine world, encompassed the cycle of life— from (giving) birth to death, and the women’s role as manager of the household. The miniature mansion was not a play toy for girls, although it could have been used on an educational level. A dollhouse was certainly not a miniature copy of an actual house, but an idealized and stylized version of 26

an Amsterdam mansion. It was, in fact, a tiny cabinet of curiosities filled with small-scale versions of rarities of nature and art. A dollhouse stood amidst other art objects in a special room. Of the approximately 400 prosperous trading families living in Amsterdam, only 7-to-10 percent of the very wealthy women owned a dollhouse. Uffenbach estimated the worth of Petronella Oortman’s cabinet at 20,00030,000 guilders in 1718. This sum would have bought a large, furnished townhouse. He may have exaggerated the height of this figure, but nonetheless, Petronella spent a huge amount of money, and it was not for all to have or

to spend so much on such an outrageous hobby. Petronella’s house trumps all existing dollhouses. The cabinet itself is made from oak. The veneer on the outside casing is tortoiseshell with pewter inlay, a skill invented by André Charles Boulle, the cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV of France. This intricate technique was brought to Amsterdam by one of his Dutch students, and it took the unnamed craftsman three years to complete. The splendor continued inside the mansion. Petronella ensured that all miniature objects were made of the same material as their ‘grown-up’ counterparts. She did not exchange a brass bucket for a silver one. Her attention to detail was meticulous—wicker baskets woven from quartered pieces of dried grass, her smallscale library with eighty-five books, and more—spittoons, a board game, paintings, cups and saucers, bed linens, pillows, all perfect examples of reality in miniature. Petronella not only kept a close eye on the details, but she also inserted various surprises. She could change her front door into a garden with a working fountain; an opening in the floor in the ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

cooking kitchen led into the cellar. Just when the Uffenbachs thought they had seen everything in the house, more secrets were revealed—a door leading up to the library; in the cooking kitchen, a door opens to a toilet; and, water could be pumped in the kitchen. No wonder the Uffenbach family stayed for three full hours. Hendrina did not only have the dollhouse and the dolls at her disposal. Her mother had commissioned Jacob Appel, a local artist, to create a painting of the mini-mansion. From the painting, we can see what happens in each room—two gentlemen playing a game in the salon; a nurse with a child on a leash; a cook busy in the cooking kitchen; children mourning their diseased sibling in the study; a maid ironing. Indeed, the dollhouse addresses all aspects of the life of a wife and mother. For historians like myself, Petronella Oortman’s dollhouse is a fantastic source. Common household objects made from fragile materials, such as wicker baskets, or a sowing bag made from cloth, have long ago perished. But in the miniature world, we can examine these items and learn more about day-to-day life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The current location of Petronella Oortman’s dollhouse and painting is the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. (References are available upon request.)

Mignonnette SMALL, BUT MIGHTY PART 1
By Laurie Baker “A doll is among the most pressing needs as well as the most charming instincts of feminine childhood. To care for it, adorn it, dress and undress it, give it lessons, scold it a little, put it to bed and sing it to sleep, pretend that the object is a living person... A little girl without a doll is nearly as deprived and quite as unnatural as a woman without a child.” Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
roadly defined as dolls under 20 cm, or about 8 ½ inches, Mignonnettes make a big impression for their size. There is something so very appealing about their miniature dresses, hats, and accessories, with their thin, bisque limbs and dainty features. Displayed in their original presentation box with their wardrobe, they are precious indeed. Today, the early “French mignonnette” commands high prices, both privately and at auction. Fortunate is the collector to have one—or more. Armand Jullien first used the term, Mignonnette, in 1876 so the name was already familiar to doll enthusiasts. In 1877, Fernand Sustrac registered a patent for a small, articulated, all-bisque doll. 13-14 cm tall, or about 5 ½ inches, she would be allbisque, with a thin body and limbs, fixed blue eyes, and a long, blond mohair wig. She would have ribbons wound around her bare feet and ankles, in lieu of shoes. She would be fully jointed at the neck, hip, shoulders, elbows, and knees. In 1879, Maurice Schmitt registered a very similar patent, and he began to manufacture the new, smaller dolls. These French mignonnettes would have been pricey, beyond the reach of most little girls at that time. “French Mignonnette” from the collection of D. Hermann

A year later, Madame Lavallee-Peronne, owner of the doll shop, La Poupée du Nuremberg, attended the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris. There, she saw an all-bisque, small doll. She also saw potential. Her Paris shop, at 21 rue de Choiseul, specialized in dolls, their clothing and accessories. Her clients were loyal and enthusiastic, with money to spend. As a regular contributor to La Poupée Modèle, a monthly magazine for little girls, she introduced readers 32

to the 13-14 cm doll, which she called a “pocket doll.” Being an astute businesswoman, she was quick to add that the doll was in stock and ready for purchase—at her shop. The price was a very affordable 1fr 75c. By 1880, she had begun to refer to the doll as Mignonnette, which translates roughly as “little cutie.” “The pocket doll—we will call it “Mignonnette” if you like, still costs 1fr 75c from Madame Lavallee, rue de Choiseul.”

Cut-and-fold chair, La Poupée Modèle
Included in La Poupée Modèle were clothing patterns, printed on cloth or pink tissue paper, just Mignonnette’s size. In addition, there was cardstock furniture, which could be cut out, folded, and assembled to position in a cardstock “room,” just the right size for the dolls. What little girl would not wait, breathlessly, for the next issue, to see what new clothes and accessories she could make for her doll? Madame Lavallee-Peronne had the market cornered. Many of these pink-tissue patterns survive today, though it is hard to imagine that a child would be able to figure them out, let alone sew the outfits. But they did, probably with generous help from Maman. Ever the businesswoman. Lavallee wrote: “We remind our readers that the patterns only fit the dolls sold by Madame Lavallee-Peronne,

nowhere else are they as pretty or as well made.” La Poupée Modèle 1883 Mignonnette was a grand success. It seemed that every little girl in France wished to have at least one. La Poupée Modèle continued to publish articles and patterns, trying to keep up with demand. After Madame Lavallee-Peronne retired in 1883, the shop was run by her employee, Mlle. Regnault, who adopted the same business model. She continued the association with La Poupée Modèle and kept up inventory and accessories. Even so, more change was soon to come. Inevitably, all fads eventually fade. The quality of the dolls began to suffer. In addition, little girls of the day were losing interest in the thin-bodied Mignonnette, modeled to resemble a 12-to-15-year-old. Instead, they turned their fancy to the new aesthetic: a small, German doll with a chunkier body, sleep eyes, an open mouth with a top row of teeth, with molded, painted shoes and black socks. Little girls could relate to these youthful, more realistically-shaped dolls. As a result, hundreds of thousands were sold, both in France and abroad. Mignonnette was no longer the doll of choice. Alas, Mlle. Regnault was forced to close shop in 1891. Room backdrop, La Poupée Modele “Resting a bit” from the collection of D. Hermann

Museum News Happy news: our well-loved destination, the Spielzeug Welten Museum in Basel, Switzerland, is back!
S
caled back during the covid pandemic, the toy museum is currently open with a delightful holiday exhibition that you can enjoy onsite and online. The exhibition began on November 12th, 2022, and runs through February 19, 2023, more than six hundred animals crawl, fly, swim, and hop through this
year’s Christmas exhibition at the Spielzeug Welten Museum – a testament to the variety of creatures that enlivened Christmas trees as early as 100 years ago. Filou, the Christmas dog, guides our youngest visitors through the exhibition. Gripped by a longing for adventure, he sets off on a great
journey. Full of curiosity, Filou meets new animals wherever he goes – until homesickness strikes in the desert and he returns home to take his place under the Christmas tree. Children of all ages are charmed and grownup visitors also get insight into the diverse array of techniques used in the early Christmas tree decorations industry: animals made of Dresden cardboard appear alongside Gablonz and Victorian Christmas decorations, candy containers, and glassblown objects. Whether sheep, fish, dove, or lion, nearly all the animals are shown in the context of – the medieval book that sought to link characteristics of animals to the Christian doctrine of salvation. Most of the exhibited ornaments were made in Germany between 1880 and 1930. Objects from the Museum Collection are shown alongside loans from Alfred Dünnenberger, Peter Baumann, and Doris Albrecht Mäder. Miss
UNEEDA’S FASHIONISTA by Debbie Bigness
R
ecently I purchased an extensive collection of 1960s Barbie and Ken dolls. Included was a mintin-box Allan, a mint-in-box Skipper, a flocked hair Ken (with hair completely intact), a massive wardrobe for Ken with accessories, a Bubble Cut Barbie, a Miss Barbie, a Midge, an array of early 1960s Barbie clothing, three Barbie cases, a Ken case, and a Miss Suzette case with doll and wardrobe.
I kept the Barbie items for a couple of weeks before selling the lot to a friend, however, the Miss Suzette doll, trunk, and wardrobe intrigued me. I began to research this obvious Barbie clone. The doll was made by Uneeda Doll Company in 1962 as a W.T. Grant exclusive. Uneeda Doll Company was a Brooklyn, New York-based toy company that was in business from 1917—1991. W.T. Grant was a modestly priced variety store in operation from 1906 until 1976. Miss Suzette was typical of the trendy fashion dolls of the 1960s. Standing 111⁄2 inches tall, she had a mature figure, high-heeled feet, rooted hair, and adultstyled fashions. Miss Suzette sold for less than a dollar which was approximately half the price of Mattel’s Barbie doll. Her wardrobe was manufactured by an American-based company called Totsy. The doll was manufactured for only a short period of time. She had a slighter larger head than Barbie with a thinner waist and larger hips. Her ponytail hairstyle came in brunette (the most common), blonde, and redhead (rarest). Her rooted wig was made in the same fashion as the early Barbie—rooted around the perimeter of her head with fringe bangs. Her head was on a spring joint, allowing for enhanced tilting and rotation. She had painted black eyes with a white accent, red lips, a serene smile, and blushed cheeks. Original travel case

The doll’s body was hard and hollow with softer vinyl limbs. She had an unusual “Y” construction to her hip joints, allowing for increased flexibility in posing. She had straight legs. A bent-knee model was manufactured a couple of years later, eliminating the “Y” leg jointing, replacing it with the more common hip jointing found on other fashion dolls of the time. This doll is very difficult to find. She is marked “Uneeda Doll Co. Inc.” in a circle on her back with 1962 Right side of body

beneath the circle. Her head is marked “NF.” Her hands have four fingers molded together with a separate thumb. One of the unusual aspects of this doll is a molded ring on the fourth finger of her left hand. The significance of this molded ring is a mystery. It might have been intended as an engagement ring, a wedding ring, or simply a jewelry accent. Original evening wear Close up of Miss Suzette’s face

Miss Suzette, case and clothing Original clothing lot purchased with doll Miss Suzette in travel case
Miss Suzette was sold in a variety of blue toned, white-trimmed bathing suits with white, open-toed heels. Like Barbie, her wardrobe was extensive and well-made. The original Totsy clothing boxes declared each fashion was exclusively made for Miss Suzette. However, none of the clothing is tagged. Totsy made clothing for numerous fashion dolls, and images of original boxed Miss Suzette clothing items are difficult to find, primarily due to her brief manufacturing history.

Collectors look for specific indicators in the construction of Miss Suzette’s clothing. Most of the casual clothing is finished and closed with tiny, two-hole buttons colored to match the outfit. The evening gowns tend to have small metal gripper snaps or larger, round “donut” metal snaps. Some outfits have all three closure methods used on one outfit. Despite the slight differences in her body modeling, Miss Suzette can wear Barbie’s clothes. Vinyl wardrobe cases were made for Miss Suzette in blue, pink, black, and white. The case I have is blue. Like Barbie, Miss Suzette had shoe packs, individual wardrobe fashion packs, and accessories. I do not believe there was any furniture made exclusively for Miss Suzette. Miss Suzette is collected around the world, and there are many websites and Facebook groups dedicated to this enchanting doll.

In researching Miss Suzette, I came across another doll named Suzette manufactured from 1964 to 1966 exclusively for the Simpson-Sears store in Canada. She was also a Barbie clone, but she is not manufactured by Uneeda and is not made from the same mold. She was manufactured by the Canadian company Davtex. The Canadian Suzette doll and the American Uneeda Miss Suzette both had extensive wardrobes that were sold in similar boxes.

Miss Suzette had a boyfriend, also manufactured by Uneeda as an exclusive for W.T. Grant. His name was Bob, and he is also difficult to find due to his abbreviated manufacturing time. My original intention when purchasing Miss Suzette was to determine her value and then sell her. I discovered that a mint doll can sell for more than $300. A gently played-with doll can command $150. Her Miss Suzette outfits can sell for $40—up to $200.

To my surprise, I have grown attached to Miss Suzette, and I am now searching for additional items to add to her wardrobe. I was delighted to find two original outfits in my Barbie-clone clothing stash. These have been cleaned, primped, and added to the already large wardrobe of this little-known 1960s fashionista.

U.S. Museum Directory Compiled by Monica Bessette Doll, toy, miniature, and dollhouse museums
Museums across the country have experienced many challenges over the past few years; their perseverance and resilience are proof of the importance of their mission. In an effort to keep them going strong, and to assist readers in their quest for one-on-one time with the things they love, we’ve compiled a directory of doll, toy, miniature, and dollhouse museums; to build awareness of the educational, cultural, and economical value of museums who focus on events and programs families can take part in and enjoy together; and introduce our readers to important values museum excel in fostering, such as intellectual growth, historical awareness, and cultural diversity.
