Greg Mountcastle do€s nothing in a small way. China loves will never for8ei his inq€dible 1998 exhibit in Ne Orleffi, "Portraits in Porcelain . . . A Study of China Dolb 18451945," a proie.l five years in lhe makin& and one for which he was given the UFDC Award of Excellence. For the most recent special exhibit in New OrleaG, "A Passion ror Parian. . . Painted Ladies, Tind Bisque" he demonstrated that more is b€tter, assembling an ovemhelming nunber of bisque dolls hom early ptoducuon in 1845 to 1945. Enhancin8 this eye-boSgling display were exquisite 19th .entuy oil paintings, figurines, and the piace de r6sistance, e enormous Eiff€l Tower shategically located near th€ French bisque dolls.

The Dollspart Catalogue: More Clues tor Doll ldentifica[ion

uring the nineteen ihi.tier the Madame Alehder Doll Conpany of New York City pftrduced dolls that were higllly succstul, su.h as the Princs Eliab€th and w6dy-Am @atioc. Thesc dols also t@k on variG additioml identitiE durin8 their time of production. For exmple, the Princ€s6 Elizbeth became Mccuffy Ana, Flora M.Flimsey md Kate GrMaway with newly desiSned costumes. The same held ilue for Wendy-Am. Other compmies of that era sought to capitalize from the suc€ess of the Alexmder Compey by ofturinS similar mechandise. Cedainly, Arranb€e's various Nancy @ations @ found to $metim6 @mble the Priness Elizbedt and dEn again the Wendy-Am dolls. A 19so/51 Dollspat Price Catalogue rec€ntly b€.ame available from the estate of Mre. Esther Sahr as well as several Princess Elizabeth and Werdy-Ann so called "look-alike" dolls. ME. Sahr lived in Schenectady, NY and for some ten years, from the late nin€teen forti€s though the nineten fifties, bought "blanl6" from the Dollspart Supply Co. of New YorL thes€ dolls weR not mk€d, wiSaed or dothed. She dress€d and wigged thern and sold the finished ptoduct to the Ka.l Departmmt Sl,orE in Scheneciady. While the dolls under disossion and ilustrated with this arti.le are not listed in ihe 1950/51 Dollspart catalogue, it is assumed that they were still available from th€ company thrcughout the ninete€n fo.ti6. This do€s seem plausible when one omideE that to this day lhe fim offes omplete pts of parts for a Shirley Temple doI that was for sale in the ealy nineten eventies, in othe. words,

Plaed prominently on lhe title page of the 1950/51 catalogue, Dollspart staled that lhey were "Distributors of "Ideal" Parts ad "Effmbee "Dy Dee Pads." ln additiorL they caEied all the items that a doll hospital would need to make brcken dolls well again. One could only wish that all thos€ fifti6 doll sh6, otton'and rayon sk wouH snl b€ in stock. Good quality human and mohair wigs were available including replacement wigs for ldeal's Spdkle Plenty, "made of bright gold ym-" Spaue Plenty w6 available for sale from 1%7 - 1950. 'Ihe po$ibility al$ exists that dol hcpitals ass€mbled whole Bye-I, Babies from the pads available from the suppty company and $ld rhem. Today's colectoE of the ever popular Dy-Dee Baby by Effanb€€ woutd be thriled if they could still order ,rom this 1950/51 catalogue. Plastic Dy-Dee heads with iNet rubber ears and neckpiece and 'ioining mushrcomr" muld be had in addition ro rhe prcpe. all rubber bodi6. Of course, Ideal's Betsy Wetsy rubber parts were also in sto*. Baby tie-in ams and leSs were available in compositio4 plasrir ed vinyl, as weI as mam doll legs. They turther lisH "shoulder alm," flat top and pin ty?e, ro be used with old fashioned .loth body dolr wherc alms are joined to the body with washer and spring. The pro6pective recipients w€te specifically lisied: 17" girl, 18" baby, m' snm Ejtrl,20'. baby,22,, baby, 24'125" baby. This latter inlomarion lets us know rhat cohpo6ition dolts were srill being *dicd inio the ninetm fiftis and that the changeover ftom ompcition ro hard plastic anA vinyl did not ome suddenly but Bradually. It also helps explain why some dols from this tramition period may be found with a mixtuE of compo6 ion ad plastic parts. It is hop€d that this additional infonnation win give mlectoE a deeper and bmder understanding of the workings of some branches of rhe dol hdustry in the forties and 6fti6. Part'dlarly. ia+ould help th-m mdeErand thar dolls cd only b€ iaentified as a priness Elizabeth or Wmdy-An4 when m example is so narked or the original clothinS canies proper

We now know that Aranb€e produced similar looking em and in addition such dolls .ould have bes "blanks" that weE drBsed not only by M6. Satu, but probably also by other small home indushies. In fa.t amed with this new inJormatiorr it (uld be tun to rry and l@k for dolls dressed by these home workers. Mrs. Sahls sn reporred that he was a very small boy whm his mother did this work bul he dc Fmemb€r beauritut, fancy dresses "much nicer" than the left over exmple. Marotten or Schwenker in Geman, Folie de Musique or Marotte in Fiench, these festive musical rattles wer€ given out as party favors at celebrations and social soi.ees. They were gaily costumed for Camival in Venice and Cologne and were probably o.iginally designed as a prototype of the court lestels scepter. An early nineteenth-century sketch of lhe famous French ballet dancer Lise Noblet depicts her in costume holding a narotte. The ballerina su.cesstully preformed as a damer in th. " M$qued Ball, " written by French compo*r Francois Esprit in 1833. The story was built dound the kue account of the 1792 muder of King Gustav IL which ocared during a masked ball at the royal opera house in Stockholm. The masked ball lheme €ontinued to be popular throughout the 1800s md hit its peal in 1857 when Cuessippe Verde premiered his mu.h-acclaimed version of the opera. It was also duin8 this time that marottB evolved into a more elaborate form. Their clothing or "tunic" became more detailed and fine fabncs and trims were employed. The faces were now intricately carved or molded with refinement to the features. Some were made to resemble politicianr noblemen or customized to look like love.s. In addition to bells, some had squeakeE hidden in the torsos. As fashion statements some ladies w€nt so far as to have special marotlE.ostumed to match the gown she would be A.cohpanying the heyday of the cotillion from 1860 to 1914, marottes t'ecame quite the rage. Some were made of celluloid but understandably f€w of thos€ examples have su ived. with the advancement of mas doll production, most of the heads were mde of bisque with Blass or painted ey6. The handlB were tumed wood, cawed ivory or metal overed with velvet. For th@ ladies in dire need of a dance partner, sme of the h dles doubled as whistles. The more demu.e damsel could summos her gentleman of choice with the sliShl flick of her gloved hand simply by whirlinga marotte. They could now play complicated musical movemenB German and Viennese melodies, from a small box concealed within. One or two airs were the usual but some could play up to eighi tunes, handy for those who* beaur were slow to respond.

"gifts for the little ones." They totally disappeared from the market by the 1930s. A run of reproductions surfaced in the l980sbut are easily detected. The tune they play is a Beatles song!
