Letters “The Quest, The Fate of the Common German Bisque Doll,” in Antique DOLL Collector, January 2023, Volume 26, Issue 1. Armand Marseille bisque doll and caption from “The Quest, The Fate of the Common German Bisque Doll,” in Antique DOLL Collector, January 2023, Volume 26, Issue 1. For more information on obtaining a copy of this article, please go to our website at www. antiquedollcollector.com and select the tab “Back Issues.”

Hello, I just read “The Quest” column by Linda Edward, “The Fate of the Common German Bisque Doll,” and am happy someone finally wrote an article on these rare, irreplaceable, and beautiful dolls. My first antique doll purchase was also an Armand Marseille. She was in perfect condition and had her original socks and shoes. At the time, I wondered what the dealer meant by she was a good beginner doll. At first, I thought it was because there was an abundance of Armand Marseille dolls made, so she wasn’t rare. In my early years of collecting other German dolls such as Simon and Halbig, Kestner, Kammer & Reinhardt, I assumed they were much more expensive because of their rarity. I also assumed that Jumeaus or other French dolls were unattainable because of extreme rarity. Now, after 40 years of collecting, going to doll shows around the country, and doing my own doll shows, I don’t find French dolls to be any rarer than German. You can find both at any doll show you go to in this country, and looking at the calendar in the back of just your magazine, the shows are plentiful. What has happened to the German dolls I blame on dealer and auctioneer hype. As with anything, automobiles, homes, clothes, and jewelry, you have the hype of keeping up with the Jones’s. It is sad what dealers and auctioneers have done 12

ADC-Master-Ads-FEB23.indd 12

My first antique doll, an Armand Marseille mold 370, still stands today among my other bisque dolls. Despite my ever-wandering interests within doll collecting she still brings a smile to my face as I am transported to the beginning of my adventures.

to doll collecting and have actually ruined it for themselves by putting all their eggs in one basket. I have my share of both French (17, to be exact) and German dolls, and they are all beautiful and in excellent condition. They all have their own beauty. As a matter of fact, some A&M dolls give French dolls a run for their money in beauty. They are all old and rare. They are irreplaceable. It’s not rarity, it’s perception. Thank you, Linda Edward; keep the articles coming. Tracey Tuday

The Story of

JAMES

An Early Izannah Walker Boy by Paula Walton All photos from the author unless otherwise stated.

S

weet James is a slightly mischievous boy, who once upon a time thought it would be great fun to borrow his sister’s clothing, to try and convince people that he was a she! Exactly when he first came up with the idea for his lighthearted masquerade is, unfortunately, still a mystery. Like so many of Izannah Walker’s dolls, James’ complete history is one I would dearly love to know. My personal acquaintance with James began during the latest chapter of his story. A very good friend of mine purchased James in the spring of 2016. She was a phone bidder at the auction where he was being sold. In one of our many discussions about this extremely intriguing doll, she confided that for some reason she felt quite strongly that she truly had to have this particular doll. I am sure most of you have had that feeling about a doll. I know I certainly have. It is an instant connection that tugs at your heart, and evokes such an intense longing, wrapped up with love, and thoughts of how every single thing about the doll is “just right.” My friend related that she was very nervous during the bidding, greatly worried that she would not be able to win the auction. When the fast-paced bidding ended, she actually thought she had lost. Fortunately, her husband and daughter were in the room with her as she was watching the auction online. They were able to reassure her that she was, indeed, the high bidder. When he was sold at auction, James was wearing a very well made girl’s dress variously referred to as a wrapper, day dress, or morning dress, in a button-front style popular from the 1870s on. The dress fit him fairly well, except it was very tight across his chest, which

over time has caused the fabric to split. His undergarments consisted of a plain chemise, drawers and a petticoat, all of which exhibit small tears and signs of wear. None of these pieces had fastenings, being simply sewn onto him instead. The first time I met James, in October 2017, he was going by the name of Prudence. “Prudence” and her sisters came to Connecticut to take part in the special exhibit of Izannah Walker dolls that I curated for the Jenny Lind Doll Show. I organized the exhibit of twenty-five original dolls in honor of Izannah’s 200th birthday. You can learn more about the exhibit by reading my article in the March 2018 issue of Antique DOLL Collector. Since the exhibit, I have had the opportunity to examine James in depth. Upon finally looking at him, away from all the bustle and excitement of the exhibit, I was immediately struck by the thought that the doll really looked like a boy. There are very few known examples of Izannah Walker boy dolls. Within this small group, many have classic painted black boy’s boots with red fronts, though I can think of at least one or two that do not. James actually has dark green painted boots, which I have never seen on any

other Izannah Walker doll. The green paint is the original color, which has never been altered. So, from the very beginning of our acquaintance, James presented me with two mysteries: Was “Prudence,” in truth, actually a boy, and why does this very endearing doll have green boots? When I broached the subject of “Prudence” only pretending to be a girl with her owner it turned out that she, too, had been wondering whether her doll was a boy. Close study of the doll’s painted hair reveals that this doll was definitely intended to be a boy. In order to confirm my own belief, I asked other Izannah Walker experts, whose opinions I value, for their thoughts about the doll’s gender. The response was unanimous; we all agree that this doll was originally intended to be a boy. As for the green boots, they are still a mystery, and one more reason that this doll is such a rarity. While I cannot tell you why his boots are green, what I can tell you is that he is one of Izannah’s earlier dolls. If you read my article Happy 200th Birthday Izannah Walker in the September 2017 issue of Antique DOLL ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

Pictured is the original clothing James wore when he was purchased at auction.

There was damage to the fabric of the dress James was wearing when sold at auction. The fabric has split on both sides of the chest due to stress because the dress fit too tightly.

When James was purchased at auction, he wore a dress of brown ditsy print cotton and pale blue and white polka dot fabrics.

Collector, you may remember that I have put together a somewhat flexible timeline for estimating when an Izannah Walker doll was made, based on certain construction methods and style changes in the dolls and dating those methods and styles using period photographs. As I quickly came to realize, James is unique for many more reasons than his gender and green boots. The back of his head has a set-in piece of coarser, more largely woven stockinette that I associate with the earliest Izannah Walker dolls from 1845 to a point prior to 1855. I can tell you from personal experience that this coarser stockinette is much easier to manipulate and 22

Here you can see the original green paint of James’ boots. He is remarkable in that he has no overpainting. So, though his paint does show wear, it is all original. James wears a plaid boy’s dress and matching breeches.

is more forgiving to work with than the more finely woven stockinette on his face. I have yet to see this coarser stockinette used in such a manner on any of Izannah’s later dolls. The fine lines around James’ eyes are the same dark brown as the outer edge of his irises. He does have very delicate lower lid lines and highlights on his irises. His lips and cheeks are painted with the slightly plum tinged color that I usually find on the pre-Civil War era dolls. His beautifully fashioned fingers are the longer and slightly more firm and rounded fingers that I have mostly encountered in dolls from about 1855 until a point prior to 1861. James has deep set rounded eyes, and well defined upper and lower lip curves, though his neck is not as slender as those of the girl dolls that share these traits. What all these features mean to me is that James was very likely made sometime in the period between 1853-1856, and at a time when Izannah, her sister Jane Walker, and her aunt Jane Hintz were refining their dollmaking process. As no one has yet been able to identify which dolls were made by each of the ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

James and Ismay share many characteristics, though James has a rounder face and wider neck. Ismay does not have coarser stockinette on the back of her head.

I love this style of early hands, that both James and Ismay have, for the longer and uniquely stuffed fingers. 24

women or whether they worked on them as a joint effort, that is one more mystery to add to James’ story. It is impossible to know when James was first dressed as a girl, though it is hard not to wonder if perhaps that occurred during the 1870s-1890s, at the time when the dress that he was wearing at auction was made. Was he originally intended to be the playmate for a young boy, then later passed down through the family to a little girl, who borrowed a dress from one of her other dolls? We may never know. I have now come to my part in James’ story. In addition to studying James, I am making him a wardrobe of new clothes. Naturally it would be wonderful if James still retained his original boy clothing, or if antique boys’ garments of the proper size could be found. After a lengthy search for appropriate antique clothing failed, I am making him period correct reproduction clothing made from antique fabrics. It is quite an interesting and challenging project. In the second part of this article about James, I will be sharing photos of his entire wardrobe, information on how I found and collected the antique fabrics I am using, my research on period attire for young boys, plus my self-drafted patterns and instructions so that you can sew select pieces of his wardrobe for

Mignonnette SMALL, BUT MIGHTY PART 2

By Laurie Baker uthors Matilde Heritier and Samy Odin, in Mignonnette: Her History, Wardrobe, and Miniature World, 1878-1917 consider the 13 cm Simon and Halbig 886 and 890 to be the best example of these dolls. I refer the reader to this definitive book for a scholarly, impeccably-researched history of mignonnette, and all things relating to her. They include a concise timeline of mignonnette’s history, from start to finish. The coup de grace for Mignonnette was the publication of La Semaine de Suzette, a new children’s magazine, in 1905. By 1907, the magazine introduced a new doll, Bleuette, a little over 10 ½ inches tall. La Poupée Modèle did its best to compete, offering a larger doll of their own, Benjamine, but it was too little, too late. Bleuette’s popularity grew, and by 1907, the mignonnette’s day was over. Later during World War I, it was difficult to import dolls from Germany into France, so La Poupée Modèle stopped all orders for mignonnettes. They wrote: “The small all-bisque dolls are all sold out, there will never be any more of them.” Fortunately for collectors, the mignonnette has not been lost to history and is alive and well in our hearts and in our doll rooms. I had no intention to add a mignonnette to my own collection. I was clearly focused on other dolls. Sometimes, though, we have no choice. I was offered a pair of all-original mignonnettes in original condition. My “miggies” are definitely German dolls but dressed “for the French market” looking very much like French children in their silks and laces. Because of the similarity in their size, costumes, painting, and bodies, I am

convinced they were made as a pair, and thankfully, have remained together for over 130 years. The little girl is approximately 18 ½ cm tall, just over 7 inches, and has hazel eyes. I wonder if they were blue, in the beginning, but lost color along the way, as hazel eyes are uncommon. She is beautifully painted, with delicate lashes and the large eye cut of French dolls. Her bisque is flawless. She has a slim, 5-piece composition body, a closed mouth, single-stroke brows, and the long, blond wig common to mignonnette girls. Her jacket is made of “fur,” and is trimmed in ruched silk and lace. Her long pantaloons are trimmed with a metallic cord, and a feathered, silk bonnet frames her face. Shoes and stockings are painted on, with remnants of gold-painted toe ornaments. Her jacket is sewn on, so I cannot imagine it would have been easy to dress and undress this doll in “La Poupée Modèle” clothing. She obviously was “dressed French,” for the French market, and would have been a more expensive doll at the time. The little boy is 18 ¼ cm tall, just over 7 inches, with a mohair, skullcap-type wig, and large brown eyes. His bisque is fine, and is expertly painted, with fine lashes and single-stroke brows. His handsomely-detailed costume includes a jacket, a vest beneath, trimmed in metallic lace, and fancy, trimmed pantaloons. He, too, has a 5-piece composition body, with painted shoes and stockings. He wears a felt tricorn hat, trimmed in lace. Some of his clothes are removable, but I doubt this doll was made to be dressed and undressed. He and she, together, make quite the well-dressed pair. K*R German doll in artist-made outfit. Comparing my German boy with an earlier, French mignonnette shows what changes were under way in the manufacture and marketing of these small dolls. French mignonnette from the collection of D. Hermann

Both of my mignonnettes were probably made in Germany and possibly sent to France for dressing. I wanted the little ones to fit into an already existing collection of fashion dolls and their things so I paired them with two fashion dolls in the 14-15-inch range, with furniture in their scale.

By comparison, this 6 ½-inch K*R, Simon and Halbig mignonnette has a different aesthetic. I do not sew for dolls, but a seamstress in Canada does, and she listed his newly-made outfit online. He wears a jaunty tricorn hat with feathers, a satin jacket, lacetrimmed shirt, and pantaloons. He has the typical painted shoes and stockings. With a chunkier body, an open mouth with teeth, sleep eyes, pudgy cheeks, and a 5-piece composition body, he embodies the new German style. It was appealing to children if their doll “looked like them,” with child-like proportions and a more youthful face.

Mignonettes continue to intrigue us. There are dolls to please every collector and in every price range. Some intrepid collectors will assemble the cardstock backdrop and furniture, available in both the Heritier/Odin book, and in “Mademoiselle MIGNONNETTE”, Poupée de Poche (sic) by Francois Theimer. Mignonettes may be small, but they are mighty, holding their own in the doll room, surrounded by dolls often three times their height. Whether displayed as companion dolls, or in their own presentation boxes filled with their possessions, these little cuties are impossible to ignore. And thank goodness, there always seems to be room for one more.

ABG

THE SECOND WALTERSHAUSEN DOLLMAKER By Martha Nichols

A

lt, Beck, and Gottschalck porcelain doll company was founded in 1854 in the Thüringian town of Nauendorf. The founders were Gottlieb Beck and Theodor Gottschalck, who purchased the Porzellan Fabrik von Alt (Alt Porcelain Factory). Later they acquired a second porcelain factory in the area, in the town of Stützhaus, near Ohrdruf. ABG began making porcelain shoulder heads, arms, and legs. The company was among the first, if not the first, to make blonde china and Parian dolls.

This ABG Parian has the “Alice” hairstyle (Alice in Wonderland) with molded hair band. The doll’s painting is typical of ABG artists: white highlight in eyes, darker line between lips, red eye corners, red nostril dots, eyebrows coordinated to hair color.

ABG most likely relied on Kestner to make its early cloth and kid bodies. From 1816 onward, the JD Kestner company in Ohrdruf, Thüringia, manufactured all aspects of dolls, including bodies. ABG was the second dollmaker to locate in the Waltershausen area. Because of the close proximity and similar quality, unmarked ABG dolls 32

have sometimes been attributed to Kestner. Like Kestner, ABG made dolls with solid dome heads. Later, the Waltershausen area attracted the doll factories of Simon and Halbig (1869), Bähr and Pröschild (1871), Heinrich Handwerck (1885), and Kämmer and Reinhardt (1886). Experts call these earlier factories the better-quality German dollmakers, as opposed to those that clustered in the Sonneberg area of Thüringia beginning in the 1880s. An important international exhibition of manufactured goods, held in London in 1851, spurred the European production of dolls and toys. By the end of the 1850s, ABG was producing china and Parian shoulder heads of both simple and complex design. In the 1860s, Only ABG made this china hairstyle ABG’s output featured of about 1869, fondly called “Curly Top” by collectors. The mold was also complicated hairstyles made as a café au lait blonde. that collectors now identify as “Curly Top,” “Adelina Patty,” “Dolly Madison,” “Spill Curl,” and others. One doll historian has suggested that during the 1860s Halbig designed for ABG before partnering with Simon to form the Simon and Halbig company in 1869 in Gräfenhain, Thüringia. A well-known design innovation from the ABG factory during this time was china and bisque lady dolls with “turned” heads, facing slightly to the left or right of center. Molds by ABG are documented by marks starting with a 600 series.

ABG’s turned-head chinas or bisques were a well-known feature of the company. This example has a solid dome head.

Made in Parian and bisque, the 890 mold could be dressed as a boy or a girl. Though later, the painting of this example closely resembles that of the “Alice” Parian.

With Jumeau’s 1878 introduction of bisque child dolls, European doll manufacturers all began producing child dolls. The original ABG partners were joined by Friedrich Alt and C.E. Reinhold. ABG became wellknown for its curly-headed, angelic-faced children in the 1880s, in bisque, Parian, and glazed china. The molded

Collectors call this hairstyle “Highland Mary,” after the poem by the same name penned by Robert Burns. The china is painted with the white eyehighlights and darker line between the lips typical of ABG. She is unmarked.

A bisque 890 mold has similar features to the Parian but on a smaller scale for this example of 111⁄2 inches.

hair of these children is often asymmetrical, and features many comb marks, in both black and blonde shades. Their shoulders are more molded than those of earlier lady dolls, showing the start of the upper arms. ABG made legs with boots and arms with cupped fingers and separate thumb, in china, Parian, and bisque.

Mold 1046 shows the suggestion of upper arms in the mold, along with asymmetrical blonde hair. This example is marked with mold number, hash mark, and a 3 along the edge of the shoulder plate.

Dressed as a Highlander, this china has typical ABG legs with boots and arms with cupped hands.

By the 1880s, ABG was exporting to the United States, as well as to other European countries. Some of ABG’s molds (after 1888) are marked DEP, indicating the registration of a patent. The dollmakers had begun using glass eyes, and molded features like scarves, headbands, jewelry, and bonnets. In about 1890, ABG produced shoulder plates with swivel heads, and a doll representing Thüringia’s own “Empress Augusta.” During the 1890s ABG was making “dolly face” dolls with open and closed mouths, and a variety of eyes. At the peak of its output, ABG employed 300 individuals in the two factories and 100 cottage-industry workers. Near the turn of the century, ABG sold its Stützhaus factory to Hertel, Schwab, and Company, which began production in 1910, at the start of the character doll trend. Up until about 1910, ABG did not mark dolls with its trademark of intertwined initials. The company did mark many of its shoulder heads with hash marks and a

Empress Augusta’s molded, painted guimpe, pierced ears, hair band, and intricate hair style are ABG at its finest. The Empress, born in Weimar, wore the Prussian Iron Cross of her husband’s kingdom. This mold portrays the Empress’ style in about 1880.

mold number, though. The mark is typically found on the back lower edge of the shoulder plate. ABG’s first use of the ABG initials was seen on mold 1321, a character doll with painted eyes and closed mouth. Among the many mold numbers in the 1300 series, the best known is #1362, ABG’s character child nicknamed “Sweet Nell.”

The smallest Sweet Nell is 12 inches, but still has all the features of the larger sizes. She has the earlier smooth eyebrows and brown eyes. An ABG bisque marked with mold and size numbers, 1222, hash mark, and 2 along the edge of the shoulder plate.

On the head of this Sweet Nell, one can see an example of the intertwined initials employed by ABG as its trademark after 1910, with “Made in Germany” and size number 2 & 1⁄2, a 21-inch doll.

Although Sweet Nell was made in a large range of sizes, the most commonly found is probably 23 or 24 inches. The smallest is 12 inches, while the largest of this mold is 36 inches, with every size in between. The dolls were bisque with sleep eyes, some with silk eyelashes, and an open mouth with four teeth. The

earlier Sweet Nells have smooth painted eyebrows; later they are slightly molded under the paint. Regardless of sleep eyes and silk lashes, the earlier examples also have painted upper and lower eyelashes, but on later examples only the lower eyelashes were painted. The early lashes were slanted, while the later lower lashes were painted straight. The dolls have human hair wigs, often have brown glass eyes, but may have blue, and all have pierced ears. Sweet Nell had a composition body supplied by ABG’s neighbor, Kestner.

Kestner made the bodies for the 1362 mold, Sweet Nell, even for the smallest 12- inch size.

Like Kestner and Simon & Halbig, ABG produced popular trends in dolls through the 1920s, with its last series of molds most likely the 1400s: flirty-eyed characters, babies, all-bisques, and the company’s signature angelic children. Some were specialty molds made for the American importer George Borgfeldt and Company, in New York. During the Great Depression, porcelain dolls were supplanted by composition dolls, and along with other great makers of the Waltershausen area, the Alt, Beck, and Gottschalck factory closed after a very successful run of 75 years.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A KESTNER COMPOSITION BODY

Kestner composition bodies, along with those by Heinrich Handwerck, were the best-made German composition bodies for bisque dolls. Look for these distinctive Kestner characteristics: • Red stamped name, often inside a rectangle, saying “Excelsior” (A1.) (the patented name of Kestner bodies), “Germany,” (A2.) or “Made in Germany.” Seen on back below waist level.

A1

A2

• Squared-off derrière, flat on the bottom for better stability when seated. (A3.)

• Fully-articulated body including wrists. (A4.) • Cut-outs at elbows, wrists, and back of knees to allow better movement. (also A4.) • Half-circle indentation for navel. (also A4.) • Two indentations for kneecaps. (also A4.)

A3 • Oblong (rather than round) wooden balls for knee and elbow sockets. (A6.)

A6

• Larger bodies (24 inches and up) have separate oblong balls in shoulder sockets. (A7.)

• Built-in hip ball sockets with deep slot in front. (A5.)

of the

1960s and 1970s By Donna W. Brown

enres of dolls have changed over the decades. One hundred years ago most dolls were toddlers or baby dolls. In the 1930s movie star dolls were all the rage. Ideal Toy Company began with a Shirley Temple doll in 1934, followed by Deanna Durbin and Judy Garland dolls in 1938. Madame Alexander also produced several celebrity dolls, including a Jane Withers doll in 1937 and a Sonja Henie doll in 1939. In 1941, Madame Alexander continued the trend by introducing a Carmen Miranda doll. All were extremely popular.

By the 1950s, television was part of the life of the American public. In 1953 the television show, Make Room for Daddy, later named The Danny Thomas Show hit the airwaves. Angela Cartwright played Danny Thomas’s precocious daughter, Linda Williams, and won the hearts of American viewers. A doll in her likeness, the Linda Williams doll, became extremely popular. In 1959, Post Toasties took advantage of Angela’s fame and offered the doll on the back of their cereal box. The 14-inch vinyl doll cost only $2.00 with two box tops. Dolls from television shows did not take off until the 1960s when suddenly many of the sitcoms released dolls from their most popular TV shows. In 1965 Anne Frances starred as a private eye in Honey West. Soon Gilbert Toys released an 11 ½-inch likeness with a gun, holster, and black judo leotard. In the early 1960s, medical shows such as Ben Casey were very popular. To meet this craze several companies, including Bing Crosby Dolls, produced Dr. Ben Casey dolls and a doll of his assistant, Nurse Willis. Dr. Kildare, another medical show starring Richard Chamberlin, also spawned a 12-inch doll made in Hong Kong. The most popular 1960s medical show was about a nurse played by Diahann Carroll entitled Julia. The show was an instant hit in 1968 and soon a Julia doll was manufactured by Mattel. It stated on the package that Julia could wear Barbie’s clothes. There were several versions of the Julia doll including a 14-inch Linda Williams doll from The Danny Thomas Show sold on the Post Toasties cereal box, 1959. talking Julia.

10½-inch Buffy doll made by Mattel is from the television show, Family Affair, 1967. Next to the doll is the cover from the Buffy paper doll by Whitman, 1968.

Soon it seemed as if every TV hit had a spinoff doll including cartoon characters. A page from a 1963 Montgomery Ward catalog shows Bugs Bunny, Beanie and Cecil, Bozo the Clown, and Casper the Friendly Ghost. Other 1960s television dolls that were offered included the entire family of ghouls from the TV show The Munsters. The dolls were produced by Remco. Mattel soon sold a large Herman Munster doll which was a talking rag doll. One of the most popular 1960s TV dolls was actually a doll holding a doll. The 1966 sitcom, Family Affair, was a show about an uncle raising three children and featured twins Buffy and Jody. Young Buffy always carried her doll, Mrs. Beasley. There were many versions of both Buffy and Mrs. Beasley dolls made by Mattel. At first, Buffy was a 10-inch vinyl-talking Buffy doll holding Mrs. Beasley. There was also a 6-inch Buffy with a 3 ½-inch Mrs. Beasley. They were soon followed by a 10-inch cloth doll and a 22-inch talking Mrs. Beasley made of cloth with a plastic head and hands. A mintin-box Buffy doll with Mrs. Beasley now sells for up to $250. The fad of television dolls continued into the next decade. In 1971, the world-famous singing duo Sonny and Cher debuted their show, The Sonny and Cher

Comedy Hour. In 1976, Mego Corporation launched a 12 ½-inch celebrity doll line as competition for Mattel’s Barbie doll. The first dolls were Sonny and Cher, and Mego hired Hollywood designer, Bob Mackie, to design an extensive wardrobe of 30 outfits for Cher’s doll. Mego held a 1,000-guest dinner dance at the WaldorfAstoria to launch the dolls, and their Cher doll was the number 1 selling doll in 1976. There were several versions of the Cher doll including one with growing hair. Mint Cher dolls in designer gowns can go for as much as $500. Other 1970s television dolls made by Mego were the same size as Cher. One was a Wonder Woman doll based on Linda Carter’s character in the 1976 show of the same name. Mego was trying to copy the success of previous television show dolls, but their dolls were inferior, and their clothes were cheaply made. None of them were the quality of—nor gained the popularity of—their Cher dolls. In 1973, Mego Toys decided to get into the smaller action figure market. They manufactured their Star Trek series that featured Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, Mr. Spock, Lieutenant Uhura, Scottie, and a Klingon. The Great Depression-era television show The Waltons had its family turned into 8-inch dolls by Mego. In 1976, Mego released ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

their Happy Days TV series dolls, also 8 inches tall. There was Fonzie, Richie, Potsie, and Ralph. In 1976, Mego also promoted Starsky and Hutch dolls from the show of the same name. Then in 1977 Mego released their CHIPs motorcycle police dolls from the TV series of the same name. In 1976, Mattel made dolls from the sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. The show was about a high school teacher played by actor Gabe Kaplan. The 9-inch dolls were of Kaplan and his students, called Sweathogs. John Travolta’s Barbarino was the most popular doll, and today sells for about $40. Mego continued to alternate between 12 ½-inch fashion dolls and 8-or-9-inch action figure dolls as they manufactured new television show dolls. In 1978, they made a 12 ½-inch tall all-vinyl Chrissy doll, from the award-winning TV show Three’s Company. In 1975, Mego introduced Charlie’s Angels dolls, each 8-inches tall including a Jill Munroe doll played by actress Farrah Fawcett, a Kelly Garret doll styled after Jaclyn Smith, and a Sabrina Duncan doll modeled after Kate Jackson. Unfortunately for Mego, Hasbro surpassed them when they also manufactured Charlie’s Angels dolls in 1977. Mego’s 8-inch mint-in-box Fonzie action figure from Happy Days recently sold on eBay for $125.

Hasbro’s dolls were 8 ½-inch action figures, but they overshadowed Mego with advertising. Hasbro targeted the television audience with multiple commercials for their Charlie’s Angels dolls. Not only did they market the dolls well but also offered playsets such as Charlie’s Angels Adventure Van and Charlie’s Angel’s Hideaway House. Hasbro’s commercials can be seen on YouTube. Mego’s Angels just could not compete. Their dolls and clothing were not the quality of Hasbro’s. Most importantly, Hasbro’s dolls more closely resembled the actors they represented. Interestingly, Mego’s mint-in-box Charlie’s Angels dolls sell for triple the price of Hasbro’s dolls in the current market. Mego’s dolls have sold for $600 and Mattel’s dolls for $200. From the 1979 sitcom about visiting space aliens, Mork and Mindy, Mattel made several dolls of the two main characters. The 9-inch action figures were very popular and were followed by a 14-inch talking Mork rag doll. The same year Mattel’s best-selling dolls were their Donny and Marie Osmond dolls based on the hour-long variety show, Donny and Marie. They were 12 inches tall

and came in purple and pink disco attire. Additional outfits were sold separately. Mattel continued with a series of related Donny and Marie playsets including a television show set. The set came with chairs, backdrop, a camera, cue cards, a guitar, microphones, and a keyboard. Mattel sold a board game, paper dolls of the Osmonds, and a Marie Osmond TV Makeup Center, which included a large Marie head that could have the hair styled and makeup applied. Most of these items sell for under $100 today. Happy Days, a television sitcom that aired in 1974 and ran until 1984, was one of the most successful series of the 1970s. It presented an idealized version of the 1950s, and it starred Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham and Henry Winkler as his unlikely friend Fonzie. Mego Toys released 8-inch action figures of the main characters. Fonzie’s thumbs could move to be positioned in his memorable thumbs-up gesture. A mint-in-package Fonzie recently sold for $125. In 1974, the sitcom Good Times arrived on television as the first show to feature a black family. The star of

the show was Jimmy J.J. Walker as the teenage son. The show ran for six seasons and several successful dolls were produced by Shindana Toys. The first doll was 16- inches and had a plastic head and a cloth body. They also released a 23-inch all-cloth talking J.J. Walker doll that said nine phrases including his famous, “Dyn-o-mite!” Both dolls have sold for over $100. As the 1970s came to a close, fewer television dolls were being manufactured. However, in 1984 there was a popular show called Punky Brewster about a young girl being raised by a foster parent. An 18-inch cloth Punky Brewster doll sold by Galoob was quite popular. The doll had a vinyl head with rooted hair and vinyl hands. A mint-in-box Punky Brewster doll recently sold for $175 on eBay. The value of television dolls in today’s market is based on the rarity of the doll. Often the main characters sold well so their current value is lower than secondary TV show characters. An example of this is from the television action show, Six Million Dollar Man, which ran from 1974 to 1978. It was about a former astronaut, USAF Colonel Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors who after an accident

was rebuilt with superhuman powers and became a secret agent for the United States government. The Bionic Woman followed, and Kenner made 13-inch dolls of the main characters of both shows. Kenner also sold additional clothing for both main characters, along with intricate playsets. The Bionic Woman doll and Six Million Dollar Man doll sell for about $100 each, yet the show’s minor character, Bionic Bigfoot, has sold consistently for $300 in played-with condition and over $700 when mint-in-package, due to its rarity.
