The Dolls and Talent of Joanna Ott by Dototlry A. Mcconagle When I was Biven the opportnity to €xamine the dolt colection of the late loarma Ott fo. potential auctiq! I kr@ I w.s goin8 to w in p€rson dol faces I had long known. Uke rnany othe. colectoF, I had sa€n her doIs both in book ed at onvention competition r@ms, often sporting blue ribbons. loania regularly shared her colle.tion in this way, as she had long be€n a contsibuting memb€r of several dol clubs in Delawarc, Pennsylvania and m6t r€cently as a member of Dollology in Washington, D.C. I espedally expechd io s€€ a fe familiar Kesher childrEn, as loanna's dolls had a shong prEsence in lan Foulke's Kestner book. So, ev6 though I had an idea of what to exp€ct, I was a little off the maikl On my initial visit to their WiLningron, Delaware home, "Nestlewood," I fult the presence of both loanna and her beloved husband and b€st fdend, Bill, whom sh€ had lo6t two yeaE earliel Bill was a law prof€ssor with a grEat love for music, and his collKtions ard interests intemringled with 54
the dolls and acc€ssories, complemmtary companioN just as Bill and loarua had be€il
dudng their 37 yeaE t(aethe.. Music, law, needlewo& toyr Crrman iomes, ad Chrislrnas items aI shared space with their vast collection of dolls. It was clear Bill not only encouaged loaruu's interest in dolls and.o6tumin& it was a bond they shar€d. His death was a 16 ftom which she never r€€over€d, and her passinS will leave a void and a mark on lhe do[ colectinS world. While my initial f(rus was on the dollt my lust visit also brcught to the fore the depth of lixlllla's interet in the history of co6tume, ol textiles and of ne€dlework, as weu as the artistry evident in both the p€nod co6hrm6 and the authmtic recr€ations that would Row ftom her gifted fingers. It was ded that roanna was an artist with the tearcher's eye fo. detail, and a km appr€ciation for quality. I hop€d for dle opportunity to retum and absrb more. My hopes were answer€d when Skinner was chos€n to repres€nt the estate in presenting
the doll cotl€.tion d other mtiques at auction. As the Skinner dol sp€cialist, I was both honoi€d and, honesdy, overwhelhed, for I had become awarE of $€ scope of the col€ction of bodt dols ald viniage coshm€s, fabrics, laces and trins. Fortunately, a ftend in Wilmington, Delaware, Claire Dworkin, an extremely
talented needlewoman herselt delved into the project with rne during the packing Prcess. As she sorted through the fabn s, organizing and lab€ling, and I worked on the mo.e than 400 dolls in the collection, she shared sto.i6 of times past and reminisced about sewing days during which she sat bv her side and leamed so much from roanm-though I imagine that had been a mutual feelinS. One story involved a nerv*wracking drive years earlier over th€ high and winding Chesapeake Bay Bridge, in which Joanna eased Claire's dis.omfort by desc.ibing a wondertully delicate silk fabric she had hidden uder the €ouch cushion. power of fabric to transport one to a calrner placel Alar that fabric des..ibed and so vividly clea in Claire's-rnind no -was longet under the cushionl As I inventoried the dolls, many of which retain their period costumes, Claire occasionaly pointed out clothes she felt Joama had made, and my 6pe.t for the talent they r€flected took shape. The hallmark of loanna's co6tuming was the us€ of p.oper fabrics ir the proper style. Her magnificmt collection of costuming books and pattents insured that she had the right style and conshuction detail for every conceptior! while the bounty of her

At one mommt, my worktable was p€opled with a prctusion of BorBoE dc€d mouth Kestner children and I snapped a quick photo befo.e my husband, lercme, tok the doIs and packed them for then trip to Massachusetls. Soon I will embark on the pKress of unpacking the dolls and comence cataloauin8 fo. the May 12th auction. when I do, I will be greeting old friends that I have now been privileSed to met.
