auction (jaffezy Preview: Alderfer Auctions or nearly twenty years the Mary Stolz Doll and Toy Museum in Bushkill, Pennsylvania delighted visitors. The museum closed in 2005, and moved its F nearly 100 dolls, miniature rooms and toys to storage. The museum's contents are the featured collection in a nearly 1000-lot antique doll auction presented by French Fashion Alderfer's April 25-26 in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. Mary Mangold Stolz was born in Philadelphia in 1902 and collected dolls for nearly seven decades. When she died in 1978, her collection was private but extensive. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren opted to open a museum rather than immediately disburse the collection and in March of 1986, the Mary Stolz Doll and Toy Museum opened. Room after room was filled with dolls of all types and sizes, stuffed and wooden toys, and an extensive collection of miniature rooms. For more information about the auction, which is open to the public with portions listed on eBay Live Auctions, visit www.alderferauction.com or call 215.393.3000. By Lori Santamaura Photos by

Sal Santamaura (except where noted) loria, dear Floria, our papier-mache resplendent in regional costume, joined her blended family on

the cusp of the twenty-first century. In her newest residence she was surrounded by contemporaries- a young lady from Provence, peddlers also of papier-mache and some of wood and wax. She soon met those that were born the century before her and others who hailed from cosmopolitan European and American cities. This new life led Floria to yearn for more knowledge of her true place in the world. And so, this custodian joined Floria on what would become a grand tour to seek the rich legacy that was hers. Floria represents a pivotal point in the history of Western democracy. It was the definitive turn from a time of absolutism and aristocracy to an age when citizens were the dominant political force. In this broader sense, Floria embodies romantic nationalism, whose focus on development of languages and folklore established its roles, expressions and meanings. In localized regions, the value of customs and the traditions of everyday life became prominent.

20

Floria, a triumph in regional costume, proclaims the liberation of early 19th century France. AUTHOR'S COLLECTION PHOTO BY SAL SANTAMAURA

Below: This marvelous couple, clothed in shells of infinite variety and intricate detail, were the craft of "plaudiers," workers in the salt marshes who fished along France's Atlantic coast. These traveling salesmen harvested the salt themselves from marshes in the Loire estuary. During summer months they collected salt and in the autumn they traversed Brittany with trains of mules. Plaudiers made their way from village to village, exchanging salt for the necessities of life which were in short supply in their own region. Their early wares likely included these figures, which were the forerunners to dolls in regional attire. PHOTOS COURTESY OF CARMEL DOLL SHOP ARCHIVES

The origin of early nineteenth-century papier-maches is obscure. Sophisticated leather bodies on French papier-macMs featured shapely waists with gussets at the hips and knees for ease in sitting. Floria's hand-stitched kid body outfitted in national costume gives cause to believe that she is from the colorful and culturally rich countryside of France. And there our journey begins. While interpretations of the French Revolution differ greatly, it clearly abolished clothing restrictions which had defined the classes. Imperial Army soldiers who fought the Empire Wars in all regions of France uncovered clothing styles from distant provinces. Provincial costume was known to have existed for centuries earlier, yet these cataclysmic events of the late eighteenth century shaped a strong resurgence. In the nineteenth century, France was renowned throughout all of Europe for its folklore costumes. Rural dress had been so restricted and staid before the Revolution that patriotic revelry was embraced with tremendous enthusiasm afterward. Each locale had a distinctive kind of dress. The tailor was key in creating diverse costumes that would signify social stature, occupation and marital status. Family heirlooms were incorporated into the ensemble. Strong symbolism was integrated with each article of clothing and accessories. Floria's folklore frock would be key in the true telling of her lineage. Floria's stately stature occupies twenty-four inches. Her arms are gracefully curved at the elbows and firmly stuffed. The sophistication of her kid leather body is epitomized by individually stitched, graceful fingers. Her slender legs are stitched at the top of the thigh and at the knee. Proclamations of patriotism by way offolklore attire rang loud and clear throughout the vast Brittany region. Costume elements and colors made specific statements. This bride, from the Finistere village of Plougastel, is wearing the traditional red frock for her special day. KOENIG; POUPEES ET LEGENDES DE FRANCE. AUTHOR'S COLLECTION

"Here one may see the famous tennis-court where the delegates of the people, excluded from tlte Representative Assembly, met, and took the following oath: 'We solemnly swear never to separate but to assemble wherever circumstances shall require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established on a solid basis.' This tennis-court of Versailles was, therefore, fire cradle of French liberty." JOHN L STODDARD'S LECTURES, VOLUME FIVE 21

This channing young lady from the Normandy locale of Marchande D'Eveux is one example ofa fischu anchored will1in the apron. The coiffe and fiscllu are in a crisp white with neutral beige apron. Tile focal point in this particular costume is the pattem of her dress.

Fashion played a leading role in tile life of Marie Antoinette. Her clothing choices were influential in determining her own fate and that of the ancient regime as a whole. Historians did not often discuss the importance that her public attached to what she was weari11g at each step of the way. JOHN L. STODDARD'S LECTURES, VOLUME FIVE 22

Aprons were a ke-.; element in provincial costume. In the small region of L'Auvergne, this piece often had a bib. The rendition here includes a bonnet over tile coiffe as well as carved wooden shoes.

In Poitou, flat-back coiffes predominated, although tile significance of the seated young lady lies i11 her fischu's decadent flowing fringe.

Her dark olive green sateen skirt edged in black velvet bears a tag, tacked with thread, proclaiming the year 1837. She was, indeed, one of the fortunate earlier examples. Creation of her flowing skirt might have been by a one-step dyeing process, although more likely yellow was used in combination with blues to achieve the deeply verdant tone. This skirt speaks of simplicity and function, as did those in Provence. Some regions, such as Brittany, had skirts replete with jewels, sequins and fine laces. Brittany showed us masterful gold passamenterie. Reeled silk- filaments from several cocoons producing the finest silk fabric -served as foundation for the highly embellished costumes of Brittany. Tabliers or aprons were requisite, sometimes serving form rather than function. Brittany showed us aprons of silk often edged with lace or decorated with braid. Floria's apron of turkey red raw silk is testimony to this article of clothing as adornment. Silk aprons abounded in Haute-Vienne. Floria's blouse is a small-scale print on a light ground. The red leaf pattern was likely achieved with a fugitive dye; it has faded considerably in all areas except inside the box pleats shaping her torso. Classic Provenc;al prints such as these were commonplace in Aries. Corsages (blouses) could be of many varieties. Some were seen in fine white cotton batiste trimmed with exquisite laces in Alsace. Others, such as those in Aquitaine, were fashioned of the same fabric as the skirt. Sleeves often were form fitting. Leg-of-mutton, bishop and balloon sleeves graced some costumes. Without doubt, her fichu, a draped shawl, was a tailoring requirement, born of the Marie Antoinette neckerchief. Madame de Sartory, author of the "Petit Tableau de Paris," tells us that the queen had become thoroughly disgusted with politics and withdrew from the Court. She sought distraction in the rustic amusements of the PetitTrianon, where she showed herself to the ladies of her suite and the members of the royal family in the costume of an Alpine

shepherdess. It was the dressmakers who betrayed her secret to the world. Madame de Sartory states further that "Women's dress was never so plain as it is now. You see no dresses surcharged with trimmings, or sleeves with three rows of lace. A straw-hat with a knot of ribbon, a plain neckerchief, and an apron for house wear have taken the place of curls, and frizzles, and falbalas." Symbolic rather than simple, the fichu often had multiple layers. Its neckline may have been draped in linen as with Floria's sash, or with sheer fabrics and on other occasion with lace. Shawls of innumerable textures and patterns emerged as did those with another layer. Fringed silk or cashmere made extraordinary presentations observed in Normandy and Lorient. Floria's shawl of largescale chintz in red, tan and green evokes a warm feeling on the deep brown background. This warm brown tone could have been a manganese dye, which was used in early periods for printing a ground color on floral prints. Such extraordinary floral designs were evident in Bourbonnaise. At times, the fischu was anchored by the waistband of the skirt as readily observed in Normandy.

An opportu11ity to savor Floria's fischu in more detail. Her market basket was commo11ly used outside rural areas a11d appropriately accompanied her to town.

Floria's subtly modeled features emphasize her glass inset eyes. Braided coils grace her face at the temples, while her brunette tresses are pulled into a smooth bun in back.

The tan fishnet coiffe is banded at its crown by silk ribbon and is trimmed with delicate entredeux along the edge. While Floria's drapes as one layer, otlters incorporated two or three. Bonnets of various shape and structure were also seen covering the coiffe.

Normandy lies in the Northwest of France. Triumphant coiffes were the hallmark of this province. Exemplifying Ute grandeur of their headdress and tlte intricacy of construction is litis fine lady from the department of Manche and tlte locale ofCoutances.

This demure young lady of Bourgogne wears the majestic cabbage flower brelot. Marie Koenig tells us that this unwieldy headdress, which was only one of three suclt varieties known in lite region, caused depressions in tlze girls' heads!

Floria's classic early slippers in forest green leather are delicately finished with a whipstitch along the top edge. Her cinnabar rosary beads are a companion to the ivory covered "Messe" or prayer book. Strong religious beliefs were pervasive; a cross worn around tile neck was tile primary and nearly exclusive jewelry element with folklore costume.

A decidedly tedious part of our quest lay ahead. Style of the coiffe or headdress was crucial to aligning with any particular region. Each village designed its own coiffe, attaching significance and meaning to a unique appearance often reflected in the name of the design. Normandy became known for its stiffened coiffe of crisp white cotton. Brittany and Anjou were resplendent in coiffes of embroidered tulle such as Floria's; Poitou coiffes were distinguished by a flat back design. Savoie designs were compared to the masterful portraits of Hans Holbein the Younger. Bourgogne could claim the most dramatic coiffes. Proclaimed as "brelot," there were three distinct depictions - the cabbage flower, the point and the grand bouquet. Early in Floria's time, hair was parted in the center front and styled into tight curls over the temples. As the decade progressed, these curls became more elaborate and expansive. Buns on the back became looped knots worn high on top of the head. Opportunity then in the hands of local stylists rendered unlimited illusions. Floria has delightful braids coiled on the sides and a carefully pinned bun in back.

Dolls shown here, from the renott.med firms Bru and Gaultier respectively, were offered in national attire. Tirey are not souvenir dolls purchased in tire locale tlrey represent. Ratlter, they were sold in elegant Parisian boutiques and among those dolls most elaborately costumed. In the late nineteenth century, mass produced dolls in provincial clothing were offered by some concems and distributed to retailers. PRIVATE COLLECTION 25

Each article of clothing from head to toe had significance. Sabot (shoes) were as diverse in style as other costume elements. Wood shoes with upturned toes might be fastidiously carved or adorned in decoupage like those admired in L'Auvergne and Aquitaine. Leather could be elaborately tooled or remain a simple slipper such as those viewed in Provence. Floria's shoes in green leather represent the latter approach. The cross was a prominent element which not only symbolized religious beliefs but a lso served as a sign of nobility or wealth. Crosses were frequently gi lt or silver; some were made with mother-of-pearl and others might have insets of precious stones. Certain regions, such as Brittany, glorified the cross by splendorous display from lavishly embroidered black velvet ribbon. Predominant in Savoie was the cross suspended from a heart. Floria's cross is more traditionally secured using a sturdy linen cord finely edged in gold. It is a double-faced gilt version with center medallion.

This delightful scene from Cannes and Aries, north of Provence, speaks to the variations of folklore dress that existed even within one locale. STARR; THE DOLL BOOK. AUTHOR'S COLLECTION

Fashioning of folklore costumes expanded from a single tailor in a region to groups of tailors launching exhibitions and later full commercialization. The clamor for folklore costumes spread from rural regions to central Paris, where the doll industry boarded the bandwagon with fine boutiques offering poupees in regional dress. Liberty may have been taken by seamstresses in the industry to present these frocks with more luxurious elements than truly existed, although such interpretation speaks to the newfound splendor and expression of pride resounding throughout the provinces. Dolls' clothes have been essential in documenting the history of folklore costume. This provincial perspective lends an historical record and provides immersion into the diverse culture and tradition of Floria's time. She was admittedly most comfortable in Aries, just north of Provence. Nonetheless, the vast variety and interpretation of customs within the villages of each region make it nearly impossible for Floria to claim one locale as her own. Our sojourn into her heritage remains a success, for she turns out to be a true citizen of all of France. Indeed, what a testimony to Floria's patriotism! La NiceHe Cloth Dolls by Dominique Pennegues ugh the making of stuffed cloth toys started France in 1906 with Ets Pintel's first oduction, it was only during WWI that cloth lis became fashionable in France. This took p ace because of the efforts of a young Polish painter named Stefania Lazarska who was living in the artist quarter of Montparnasse at the time. She presented her one-of-a-kind artistic cloth dolls for the first time in the year 1914. Lazarska's dolls soon became famous in Paris, Nice, and then the United States. After WWI the art of making of "Artistic Cloth Dolls" became a dynamic business for many French doll makers. Gaston Casimir Perrimond started his doll-making career in May 1924 at the age of 33. Note tlte lower lip does not have the two pink dots seen on most of bigger dolls. the beautiful old village of La Rochette located on the border between the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Alpes Maritimes. The village is situated around the ruins of its feudal chateau as if embedded into the rock, hence its name. lt is surrounded by wooded hills and overlooks a plain. The extreme beauty of the native city of Gaston Perrimond very probably helped to create in his soul the need for beauty and perfection. Later he moved to Nice, the main city of the French Riviera, well known for its Carnival for which the habit of making masks goes back as early as 1294. Aware of the presence of potential rich clients coming from all over the world, Gaston Perrimond started producing toys such as stuffed animals, as well as cloth dolls dressed in the well known Nice costume complete with straw hat. He patented two marks the same yea r: "Nicette" (probably reserved for his toys) and "La Poupee Nicette" for a cloth d oll. N icette is a fem ale first name which became fashionable in the South of France in 1923. The decoration of one of the first La icette paper labels was inspired by the multi-colo red fruits one may find in the south of France. It reads "La Nicette Nice" printed on the center of the round tag. Gaston Perrimond soon beca me a well known maker of beautiful cloth dolls, made for children, but also produced for decoration and exportation. When examining the Nicette dolls made during the 20's, one may see that around 1926 Gaston Perrimond's cloth dolls were given an even more artistic look by the way the heads were gently bent and slightly turned to the right with the painted side-glancing eyes looking in the opposite direction. One may observe that most La Nicette dolls from that period until the middle of the 1930's have a rather pouty expression, or on occasion, a melancholic or pensive look. They are of a large size- 22 to 25 inches and are usually dressed with felt and organdy clothing.

Mona. Late 1920's. Pressed felt head with stuffed cloth arms, legs and body. Mona shows the new La Nicette look, witlz her lzead slightly bent and turned on the left, and her side glancing eyes looking to tl1e right. Felt dress and shoes. Note the black tie often found on Nicette dolls from the 20's and beginning of the 30's. Blond mohair wig. A paper tag was once sewn on her teddy. Mona was mainly sold as a decoration; her clothes were not to be undone, though this is possible. Teddy and cotton socks are directly sewn on the body and legs. 55 em. Also found dressed in boy. Circa 1927. Yulia Feldman collection. Close-up of Mona. The lips shows two different reds - a deep one for the upper lip, a Jigliter color for the lower lip. No pink dot 011 it. She is one of tl1e first Ln Nicette dolls to have a molded felt face wl1ich lms been pressed twice to give a finer look to the felt. Arms n11d legs are stuffed felt with a stuffed cloth body. She is dressed in the original felt outfit consisting of close-fitting light green felt lmt and beautiful green felt dress decorated with a big pink flower on the ce11ter. 55 C/11. Circa late 1920searly 1930s. Private collection. Because most of these dolls were not meant to be played with or undressed, one may find the buttons sewn on both parts of the dress, though they can be unsewn and fastened in the usual way, using the small original cuts made into the fabric on the opposite side of the dress. The pants are often sewn directly onto the body of the doll, as well as the socks. Ha ir for these decorative dolls is always mohair; it may be sewn directly onto the head or on a wig. La Nicette paper tag may be found sewn on the dress or coat, but also sometimes hidden on the pettitcoat or even the teddy. In the same period, during the late 1920's, Gaston Perrimond produced attractive 8-inch "Minuscules" with felt heads, arms and legs. Production continued until the end of the 30's. They are well regarded dolls today because of their pretty look, being dressed a sophisticated m3Jlner with organdy and felt clothing and silky socks. By the end of the 20's, Gaston Perrirnond had opened a showroom in Paris, Faubourg Saint Denis, and an active Exportation Department at rue du Paradis in Paris. However, he kept his headquarters and factory in Nice. 32

Pierre. Same mold as full length photo (left), but the face has been double pressed this time. Note the painted blue e~;es, which are larger than those of the previous boy. There are also two pink dots on the lower lip. Hair is still mohair, but the hairstt;le is more disciplined. Courtesy of Musee de la Poupee Paris.

Paula. A large baby with stuffed stockinette cotton legs and arms and celluloid hands. The mold is very similar to the doll Paula. Like Coline, Paula has beautiful blue grey painted eyes with small pink dots in the corner of each eye and two pink dots on the lower lip. Long white organdy dress with white felt booties and silky socks. 60 em. Courtesy of Galerie de Chartres.

Pierre, a "Lenci type" doll which has been identified as a Raynal doll in the past. Pressed felt head, stuffed felt arms and legs. Dressed in a Lenci-type costume also seen on some Raynal boys. Pierre has knitted long socks, not warmers typically worn by Lenci boys. Leather shoes. Courtesy of Musee de Ia Poupee Paris. Photo Jean Dalmard.

La Nicette dolls were mainly sold in Paris by Les Galeries Lafayette and we may see these dolls in their yearly Christmas catalogues. Exportation seems to have been a very successful part of Gaston Perrimond's business as today most of his dolls are being found outside of France, mainly in England and the United States. A special "Made in France" was stamped in purple ink on the teddy of the dolls to be sold outside the country. During the 30's Kimport Cie imported La Nicette dolls in the States and one may find a second tag on these dolls marked with the Kimport label. We do not know of La Nicette cloth babies being made during the 20's, but some attractive and expensive ones were made at the beginning of the 1930's until the end of production at the onset of WWII. Those babies are dressed with rich organdy or silky fabrics and were made in different sizes from 14 inches up to 24 inches. Voice boxes were fitted into the torso which shows they were intended for play. (The largest babies, 60cm, do not have voice boxes.) One may find a few different head molds with open/ closed mouths showing small painted teeth or closed mouths. Faces show different expressions from joyful to moody. The mold used for the largest babies with closed mouths was also used for large size dolls.

Coline. A large, beautifully dressed baby, Coline has also been identified as a "Lenci type" Raynal baby in the past, but is actually a La Nicette baby. She has brown glancing eyes with small unusual pink dots in the corner of the eyes and two pink dots on the lower lip. She may be found with stuffed felt arms, mitten-sfUlped hands and bent legs, and also with jersey legs and arms with Petitcollin celluloid hands. From time to time, the arms and legs may also be made of stuffed cotton. 60 em. Courtesy of Galerie Polichinel/e Paris. La Nicette continued on page 64 33

he author, a do ll and textile conserva tor for the more than 15,000 dolls in the Strong Collection, became a passionate collector of children's sewing sets only about four years ago. This fa ct is simply amazing when you examine her Encyclopedia of Cllildren's Sewing Collectibles, for we can't imagine a more comprehensive or better-resea rched book on the subject. Sewing for a d oll was an important part of growing up in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Mothers knew that the skills their daughters learned would serve them well later in life. This unique book outlines the history of children's sewing and features over 700 full-color photographs of sewing sets, dolls, toys, books, and patterns. Extensive illustrations and detailed descriptions will inform collectors on the correct placement of items and the completeness of their sets, making this an indispensable identification and value guide. You will find details on sewing sets featuring mannequins, as well as sets with dolls made of bisque, composition, hard plastic, paper, ceUuloid, cloth, and rubber. There are also chapters on dolls' clothing, millinery sets, plain sewing, embroidery, needlework, crocheting, knitting, and patterns. Another section includes information on more than 150 books dating from 1831 to 2000 that focus on children's sewing projects. Soft cover, 400 pnges, $24.95. ISBN:l-57432-526-4. Attention Collectors and Dealers!!

hari and Jim McMasters have had a new super black light developed that can be used in daylight, and is small enough to carry in a purse or pocket. Collectors and dealers at the Gaithersburg show were so impressed with them that Shari sold out and had to take orders for the next shipment. They show hairlines on bisque dolls and repaint on cloth or composition dolls. For more information about the lights, or to order a light, please visit Shari's website www.sharimcmastersdolls.com.

Sf[)J Stuff~d Cloth and r~lt Dolls by Samy Odin • photos by Jean Dalmard unless noted ong the well known dolls and characters made by the Societe ran~aise de fabrication de Bebes et Jouets (SFBJ), were those made of cloth or felt. Today, they are almost ignored by the majority of collectors on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. It is evident that this leading French firm did not miss a single opportunity to keep a prominent place in the doll market during the first half of the 20th century. In fact, SFBJ developed a strategy to be competitive even though their stuffed dolls were not really their primary specialty. The first attempts by SFBJ to launch a line of stuffed dolls dates as early as WWI. An interesting cloth doll, presently in the Coleman collection, uses the SFBJ mark engraved on the metal buttons that string the arms and legs together. The aspect of this doll is very simplistic. If it were not for the marking, one could think it is a homemade doll or small cottage industry product. It proves how SFBJ, even in this field , had been a true forerunner. Another pair of early stuffed cloth dolls, featured in the collection of the Musee de Ia Poupee in Paris, can also be attributed to the SFBJ as they have a similar jointing system with metal buttons bearing the inscription "EQUIPEMENTS MILITAIRES". We can assume that the metal parts coming from the French Army were available on the market shortly after the war. Judging by the original clothes of these two dolls, and considering their general appearance, we can date them from the immediate years after the end of WWI.

Since 1919, some major firms from other countries, such as Lenci in Italy and Kathe Kruse in Germany, were already producing this new kind of doll. This explains the quick reaction by SFBJ to put their dolls on the market to compete with the other European companies. Emile Lang was the first French cloth doll maker, active in Paris, Lyon and sou theastern France, whose stuffed cloth dolls, called "poupees artistiques", were designed by renowned French artists such as Albert Guillaume, Jean Ray and Beatrice Mallet. The Lang dolls were quite successful as playthings for children, as well as decorative art objects for the adults. SFBJ was certainly conscious of the advantages of a connection with Emile Lang for keeping their new line of cloth dolls competitive on the market. For this reason, they founded, in 1923, a thrilling new company called "Societe des bebcs jumeaux."111 The sole purpose of this company was established to manufacture stuffed cloth dolls and toys. It only lasted until1928 and it is not very clear how this association operated. Emile Lang seems to have remained independent during those years, while at the same time operating his company called "Manufacture de Jouets en Tissu". Did the connection between the SFBJ

and Emile Lang only consist of SFBJ having their stuffed cloth dolls made by the independent "Manufacture d e Jouets en Tissu"? Or did Emile Lang appoint someone else to run his business while he was taking care of the stuffed doll department of the SFBJ? Or did he manage both? What, if any, are the differences between the dolls made by each of these two companies? We will probably never get answers to these questions with any amount of certainty, due to a lack of original documents. On the other hand, we can document the connection between Emile Lang and SFBJ due to the proof that all of the early French cloth dolls prior to 1923 correspond to the ads featured in the major Parisian Toy Departments. The stuffed cloth dolls with painted features made up to that date were reasonably successful but the real beginning of the cloth doll craze started during the winter of 1923/1924, when new companies such as Marcel Pintel's, Edouard Raynal's and Adrien Carvaillo's flooded the French market with their brand new stuffed dolls lines. At this time, the vividly painted and bright-toned child dolls appeared in nearly all Parisian store catalogues. SFBJ certainly understood that it would be difficult to compete with these newcomers without a new idea. So, they decided to produce a type of cloth doll that none of their competitors could afford to produce. On April 7th, 1924, under the influence of Emile Lang, SFBJ patented a type of felt doll w ith sleeping glass eyes.<2> None of the younger companies were able to effectively compete with the huge size of the Bebe Jumeau firm that SFBJ was operating in Montreuil. The newer, smaller companies operated as cottage industries, and they lacked the financial resources to invest in the expensive machinery that produced glass eyes. Even if the smaller companies practiced a strategy that kept the majority of their cloth dolls priced lower than average products made by SFBJ, they were unable to compete with a company the size of SFBJ. They were certainly functioning on very small financial margins which did not allow them to invest in the heavy equipment needed to produce the sleeping glass eyes. SFBJ, a much larger company, had much more capital to finance this expensive project. The cloth dolls made by SFBJ were never as successful as the classic fully articulated bebes with bisque or unbreakable heads marketed under the various historical labels such as Bebe J umeau, Eden Bebe, and so forth. However, the company kept on producing the stuffed dolls until the end of the 1930s, keeping their competitors at bay. The financial d epth of the company permitted them to accomplish this goal.

Today, as collectible items, these dolls are scarcer than their bisque, campo or cardboard-headed fully articulated sisters and they are indeed as nice. Especially appealing are those dolls with the entire body cut from a very soft woolen felt, stuffed with wooden fiber and light kapok. Two head molds have been used for this type of doll, the very popular classic mold #301 and the character mold #247. We do not know whether SFBJ ever used other head molds for this line of stuffed cloth dolls. Maybe you are hiding one in your own doll collection! The oldest models have sleeping eyes made of glass, the same type used on the regular SFBJ dolls of the 1920s. Later models have their eyes made of painted wooden balls. As these dolls were popular for being unbreakable, the company realized, as soon as 1925, that they needed to improve the eyes of their stuffed dolls, in order to keep them as safe as possible for the children to play with. In those years, the security regulations for toys was not as strict as it is today, but the company certainly understood that one of the reasons of the mild success of their stuffed dolls was concern about the breakable glass eyes. So they changed to producing the flocked hard cardboard heads with sleeping painted wooden eyes for their stuffed dolls. The 247 and 301 dolls shown in this article, belonging to the Musee de Ia Poupee - Paris, have been kept in their original condition and show the evolution of this type of product from the midtwenties to the mid-thirties. The older #247 corresponds exactly to the sepia print of the patent dated April 7th 1924 and to the drawing of the ad featured in the 1924 Christmas Printemps catalog. They both show the detail of the felt body with young child proportions dressed in her presentation chemise, which is cut from plain colored cotton, trimmed with a flat lace. The openclosed mouth is decorated with painted teeth and the wig is made of curly mohair styled in a short cut. The sleeping glass eyes are very apparent in both the patent and the ad in the catalog. All of these things put together provide definite proof that these are the very same dolls sold by SFBJ in 1924. The text of the patent mentions two things only: the doll has a character unbreakable head, covered with felt, and the eyes have a mechanism to let them sleep. These are exactly the two characteristics that make this type of doll different from all of the contemporary stuffed dolls made by other French companies. The newer #301 was different from the #247 in that the material used for the head was made of flocked "carton presse" instead of felt-covered pressed cardboard. This doll is also different from her older all felt sister because the sleeping eyes are made with painted wooden balls instead of regular glass globes. The body is also different. The torso is made of pink colored hard cardboard and the arms and legs are more slender, but are always cut from the same type of soft woolen felt. The wig is always made of curly mohair. The dress is made of felt but, according to other ads from the same period, this model also came with cotton

or organza dresses decorated with felt. The sleeping eye mechanism and the material of the eyes help us to date this type of doll from the second half of the 1920s to the early 1930s. According to various ads published by the Parisian stores catalogues, this type of doll lasted until1939. These dolls seem to have been produced in a limited number of sizes. In 1924, an ad mentions heights of 37 em {14-1/2") and 45 em {18"). In 1931, sizes of 38 em {15"), 40 em (16") and SO em (19-1 / 2") are listed. Another similar doll in the museum collection bears the size number 12 and stands 62 em (24") tall. Whether you are a cloth doll collector or an SFBJ doll addict, these dolls are waiting for your attention and consideration. Happy collecting with the stuffed cloth and felt dolls by SFBJ. nyone who has ever given a present to a small child often laughs to watch the child play as delighted ly with the box as with the gift. Often the gift is ignored while the box is considered hugely entertaining. Those of us who collect antique dolls identify with this fascination. Boxes dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, whose prime function was to package candy, are now highly prized by doll collectors as incredibly charming props and accessories for our spoiled dolls. For a very long time, professionally made sweets cou ld be enjoyed only by the rich and privileged, but in the second half of the 19th century, mass production and the widespread availability of sugar made candy affordable to the masses. In Paris during the year 1887, more than 700 people listed their employment as ouvriers confiseurs (workers in the production of candy). With so many luscious products coming onto the market, the producers had to find a way to package their products to keep them safe and fresh, as well as appealing. A timely historical coincidence was the new availability of tin. This soft metal was first used by bakers in England to make cookie and cake tins. French confiseries didn't take long to follow

This pnpeterie candy container actually started life as n Christmas orna111ent with sweet suprises tucked inside for a long-ngo child. 47

Even gentlemen dolls enjoyed candy containers suited to their more masculine taste such as this top hat.

suit and expand its use as candy containers. Tin is such a malleable substance, imaginations were unlimited in shaping the candy containers into a m yriad of forms. Often the point of sale of the ca ndy inspired the shape the candy container was to take. Elegant Belle Epoque train stations were an obvious venue for travelers looking for something to amuse themselves and their children on long train rides. Tins shaped like valises and malles were sold full of bonbons to be enjoyed on board the trains. The next generation of candy containers consisted of materials that were far more fragile and delicate. Papier mache and cardboard could easily be formed into many shapes, brightly painted, flocked, lavishly decorated and embellished with Dresden papers, silks and even buttons. The most beautiful of this genre were made in Dresden, Germany and in France. These lovely items were often kept long after the candy disappeared because the boxes were so charming. Marketing to children, as a general enterprise, began to take off at the same time as the golden age of porcelain doll making. Clever confectioners in France were quick to see that boxes made as tiny purses, suitcases, sacs du voyage, pieces of furniture, dogs and kittens (with

removable heads), were just a few of the designs that would make their confections even more appealing to the young. Girls kept and enjoyed the sweets' packaging as doll accessories once the candy was just a memory. For the boys, just as many containers were shaped into trains, motor cars, bi-planes, and toy drums. During the same period in Germany, an international industry developed in making candy container Christmas ornaments. Lightweight ornaments shaped like toys and doll accessories were filled with sweets to be hung from Victorian Christmas trees all over Europe and North America. Lucky are the families whose greatgrandparents treasured these fragile ornaments as children, took care of them, and preserved them for us and our dolls to enjoy today! In America, glass became the popular material for the manufacture of candy containers. Manufacturers in the Mid-West who produced the decorative and utilitarian glass for their parents, saw a huge marketing opportunity to make glass candy containers for children. Like tin, glass was incredibly easy to mold into almost any form imaginable. Girls found candy in glass doll baby bottles and boys could complete entire train sets of glass engines and cars, filled with treats. Many of us who collect antique dolls find our dolls' trousseaux, which often include antique candy containers, as fascinating as the dolls themselves. Finding these rare and often very fragile little treasures is just one facet of antique doll collecting that makes this obsession so much fun! So, pop a French chocolate truffle, sit back, and admire the way antique candy containers make your dolls' world even more delightful. ..

Flossie Flirt A Very Popular Doll by the Ideal Novelty & Toy Company by Ursula R. Mertz • Photos Otto Mertz

T

he year was 1924. Mama dolls were immensely popu lar. Everybody was selling mama dolls. Keeping up with the competition was no problem for the Ideal Novelty & Toy Company of New York City. They were already one step ahead. Their mama dolls with the patented winking blinking eyes were selling very well. Now, a new feature had been added . ln addition to the winking and blinking (the eyes rocked up and down individually), the do lls could roll their eyes from side to side. Ideal called this feature "flirting," and gave the new do ll the name Flossie Flirt. Ten years later, Flossie Flirt was still being offered in the Sears and Butler Brother catalogues. While later on some equally successful d olls like Effanbee's Patsy remained plentiful to this d ay, Flossie Flirt did not.

Full-page ad placed by ldeal in the january 1925 issue of "Playthings." The image of Flossie Flirt is shown withi11 a picture frame. The captiou rends: "Framed in Every Child's Heart." The ad further claimed that Flossie was made in 7 sizes, 100 costumes and 15 distinctly different, fancy wigs. Note that she still looks quite chubby.

II ..._ _, _ Not only was Ideal in the forefront with , _, Wirr• innova tions, they also appreciated the value of extensive advertising campaigns. Well designed and illustrated ads ran in almost every issue of the trade journals. An April1924 full page ad showed Flossie Flirt vigorously walking along, and the text IDEAL DOLLS will h oloowo at lloo ~(ow Y..to T., Fw. F..._, Z I. at eM t-toul a-.11.. The following paragraph appeared in the Playthings issue of January 1925, and further illustrates Ideal's every important mercha nt in America, bu t also to large advertising savvy: "Flossie Fli rt in Far Off China. Ideal Novelty & Toy Company's latest, and most popular Just like Effanbee's Patsy who had a boyfriend named charmer, "Flossie Flirt," the Mamma Doll with the almost Skippy, Flossie Flirt had a companion whose name was human eyes, has even found her way into the hearts of Beau Brummel. Unlike Skippy, for w hom a special face China's aristocratic young folk. Here is a photo, printed was created, the same Flossie Flirt head was used for Beau by courtesy of the New York Times and the Wide World Brummel. He was dressed in a little boy's suit and cap. The fact that Ideal chose to name Flossie's boyfriend Beau Brummel further emphasizes their eagerness to tie in their products with contemporary famous people or events. George Bryan Brummel, known as Beau Brummel, (1778-1840) an English commoner who was a friend of the Prince of Wales, the future George IV, became famou s as a trend setter for elegant dress and etiquette. Toward the end of his life, he had gambled away his fortune and died a pauper. Several movies have been made about the life of this colorful person. In 1924, the same year that Ideal promoted their Beau Brummel doll, a silent movie was introduced that starred John Barrymore and Mary Astor. All mama dolls were constructed in similar fashion. A simple, squarish cloth body was stuffed with cotton and contained a mama crier. When the doll was tipped forward and back, it emitted a "ma-ma" sound. Upper arms and legs were loosely stuffed cloth, and the lower composition limbs tied on. The u pper legs were stitched to the body. This stitched hip joint allowed the legs to swing back and forth freely and constituted the much heralded walking mechanism. It was easy for a child to manipulate the dolL Just tip from side to side and the legs started to swing back and forth. The composition head was tied into the body with thin wire.

Tl1is picture ofa smiling, open mouth Flossie was accompanied by editorial copy in the May 1930 "Playthings" issue. Note that in this instance, marcelled hair has given way to long curls.

In 1926, Ideal announced another novel, new feature for their Flossie Flirt. Advertising copy stated as follows: "Ideal Dolls add the Final Human Touch With Soft, Flexible Rubber Hands." (Actually, all of Ideal's rubber doll arms were of three quarter length). It was stated that these new arms were not painted and could not peel, and were therefore washable. Ideal guaranteed their rubber arms for three yea rs. Eventually, dolls with rubber arms as well as legs were sold. Many of the straight rubber legs contained a squeaker that responded when the leg was pressed. Also in 1926, Ideal had yet another surprise in store for toy buyers, a doll called Vanity Fair. Essentially, she was identical to Flossie Flirt, except for her right hand. The rubber fingers were curled, and she could now hold a mirror or brush, etc. A full page illustrated ad in Toys and Novelties, dated January 1927, showed the doll admiring herself in a hand held mirror and adjusting her hair with the other hand. By now, her name had been changed to Vanity Flossy. One interesting item illustrated with this article was a 20" Flossie produced with the same head used for their Peter Pan doll. In 1928, the Sears catalogue was offering a Flossie Flirt that had undergone another change. When the original doll featured an open / closed mouth with painted upper teeth, the new one had "a beautiful, smiling face with open mouth and teeth." The dolls were sold in a wide range of sizes, from 14" to 22.5." The open mouth Flossie was still advertised in 1930. The accompanying illustra tions show an all original smiling Flossie, whose rubber limbs were missing. They have been replaced by composition limbs. The vulnerability of the rubber parts may be one of the reasons that this Flossie Flirt is hard to find in today's market. In 1931, the Sears catalogue was offering a Flossie Flirt w ith a re-designed head. Her smiling face with open mouth is somewhat narrower, and resembles the typical dolly face of the nineteen thirties. For this doll the composition head swivels on a rubber shoulder plate rather than being tied into the cloth body. Nothing has changed in the design of the arms. They are made of

22" Flossie Flirt with re-designed head. Flossie has become much slimmer and looks Iike the typical dolly face doll of tl1e 1930's. Marked: Ideal US OF A (in diamond sltape). Dark brown mohair wig, open mouth with two upper Ieeth and dimple in chin. The composition head was mounted on a rubber shoulder plate. Disk jointed at shoulders and hips, original composition legs. Arm construction (wlticlt was identical for all) can be clearly observed. Cloth upper arm has been glued into rubber part. All original, Anita Maxwell collection.

rubber to above the elbow a nd the upper cloth arm was g lued into the rubber part. Like the other Flossies, she was sold with rubber or composition legs and still had a cloth body with "mama" voice box. However, she does not feature the traditional swinging legs with stitched hip joints. Her legs arc jointed with hidden disks. Tf the do lls featured rubber legs, the above mentioned squeaker was imbedded. By 1934, the Flossies were taking up only one small corner of a page in the Sears cata Iogue. In 1935, Shirley Temple was introduced by Ideal. While in the mid 1930's various companies sold babies with rubber bodies and limbs that became very popular, it was the Ideal Company that pioneered the use of rubber limbs as early as 1926. Unfortunately, these wonderful, lifelike, washable limbs deteriorated w ith time and were obviously the reason why not as many Flossies have survived as have the all composition Effanbee Patsy's. Some Flossie have survived with rubber limbs intact. With time, their arms and legs became very hard, and it is safe to seek out these rare dolls for one's collection. 1. All-bisque cat dolls in original crocheted clothing. Each 2.25 ilrches taU. The female cat is incised "Germany."

t some point, every doU collector has been tempted to provide a pet for his or her favorite doll, such as a furry kitten to nestle in the lap • or a mohair teddy bear to dangle over the crook of an arm. But when a doll itself is a kitten or a teddy bear, what sort of plaything can serve as its companion? Even a toy mouse appears to overwhelm the miniature mousers-only 2.25 inches tall- in Illustration 1. Although their feline features are beautifully and realistically modeled and their front paws are definitely catlike, these cats have the pudgy bodies and legs of human toddlers. Their large molded white slippers allow them to actually stand by themselves. The sUppers are trimmed with pompoms, blue for the boy and pink for the girl. These pretty kitties have inset round green glass eyes and their mouths are dabbed with red. Both are clad in their original crocheted costumes. The tom eat's one-piece rompers consists of a red top and ecru shorts. There is a white ribbon collar with a purple bow tie around his neck and a cloth belt with a small metal bead buckle around his waist. The female feline's outfit, also all one-piece, is a pink dress

with an attached white pinafore. Both are wired jointed 5. All-bisque rabbits in at the shoulders and hips. Although the boy's clothing original crocheted hides any marks, the girl is incised Germany vertically clot/ring. Larger rabbit is down her spine. There is also a small round hole in her 2.5 inches tall and incised "Germany." rump, which may have been meant to hold a tail, Smaller rabbit is probably of crochet or yarn. 1.75 inches. The three little kittens in lllustration 2 seem abashed by a big ball of yarn. They are the same size and model as the previous black cats, but are shaded gray with amber glass eyes. Their molded slippers all have blue pompoms. Except for different color combinations, their crocheted clothing is also the same. Both girl cats are also incised "Germany" down their spines and have holes for the attachment of a tail. Wearing similar molded slippers in light blue box. He is quite the Beau Brummell of a bear. His doth with white pompoms, as well as a matching dapper derby, collar, through somewhat frayed, still boasts a pink ribbon the teddy bear in Illustration 3 is still tied into his original bow that matches his pink crocheted jacket. His trousers are bold black and white checks and he holds a pink metal cane in his pierced right paw. His eyes are black dots and his lips and nose are outlined in black, with a dab of dark pink indica ting his open mouth. His dog, with its yellow googly eyes and astounded expression, seems a little doubtful regarding his bruin master. The plump puppy has black ears and tail, black dot nose, red tongue, and a purple ribbon bow around his neck. A string leash attaches him to his master's wrist. The rather crude cardboard box is held together by staples. There are no visible marks on the figurines and although something is stamped in the box in blue ink, it is too faded and blurred to read. The bear is 2.5 inches tall and is wire jointed at the shoulders and hips. Another bear, this time bareheaded and 6. All-bisque ducks in original crocheted clothing. Tire larger barefoot, appears in Illustration 4, sharing a sweet duck is 2 inc/res tall and smaller duck is 1.75 inches. There are no marks. honey treat with a busy bee. Although he lacks 60

slippers and hat, his modeling is the same as that of the boxed bear, but the facial painting gives him a different expression. He also has a pierced right paw. Although he has hind paws instead of slippers, his straight human-like legs require him to stand upright. The crocheted one-piece blue-green outfit has a cloth collar and is trimmed with ecru, including two faux frogs across his chest. He is 2.25 inches tall and there are no visible marks. Even baby carrots seems Brobdingnagian to the bisque bunnies in Illustration 5. Like the preceding bear, they have paw-like feet instead of molded slippers, but still must stand upright because their hind legs are shaped like those of a human, not a rabbit. They both have painted brown side-glancing eyes, noses and lips outlined in black, and dabs of red for their mouths. Clad in their original crocheted clothing, the mother rabbit wears a bumt orange dress trimmed in white, while her smaller son is dressed in one-piece rompers made to resemble a white top, adorned with a bright red tie, and blue shorts. "Mrs. Cottontail" is 2.5 inches tall and is incised "Germany" vertically down her spine. "Peter" is just 1.75 inches. Both bunnies are wire jointed at the shoulders and hips. The mother duck and her duckling in Illustration 6 seem content with their cache of candy corn. Both ducks have brown painted eyes with black pupils and lid lines and their wings are loop-jointed. They wear only short crocheted blouses, no doubt because their tails and oversized web feet make pants an impossibility. The mother duck is dressed in royal blue with white trim and her offspring's outfit is off-white. Both blouses have dangling strings at the neckline that were probably once tied into bows. The mother duck is 2 inches tall and her duckling is 1.75 inches. There are no marks. Going bananas over their bonanza, the monkey family in Illustration 7 is perhaps the most naturally modeled of this anthropomorphic series, for even though they do stand

upright, their elongated feet and bowed legs give them a very simian stance. Their funny faces are exceptionally expressive with oversized ears, arched brow ridges, and smiles on their muzzles. Like the other animals, they have black eyes, nose and lips outlined in black, and red mouths. Although all wear similar original one-piece crocheted rompers, different color combinations and details make all their outfits individual One of the large monkeys wears bright red shorts and an ecru short-sleeved top with two oversized metal"buttons" on the front. The other is dressed in a rather eye-popping combination of turquoise and orange, with long sleeves. The middle-sized monkey has a doth collar with a shredded ribbon bow, a pea green top, and pink shorts. The smallest simians both have red shorts, but one wears a blue top and while the other has green. The mother and father monkeys are 2 inches tall, "big sister" is 1.75 inches, and the tiny twins are a mere 1.25 inches each. Any marks are hidden beneath their tightly crocheted and brightly colored costumes. Who was the manufacturer of these marvelous miniature animal dolls? I attribute this series (which also indudes mice, frogs, and pigs) to the German firm of Hertwig and Company for a number of reasons. The large molded s)jppers with pompoms worn by the cats and the hatted bear are similar to those found on all-bisque dolls identified as having been produced by this firm. In fact, in their book, German Doll Studies, Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik picture an all-bisque cat doll by Hertwig wearing these molded slippers. The 3.5 inch doll appears to have stiff legs and a more toddler-like appearance with short arms and oversized head with nicely detailed feline features and large painted eyes. Hertwig also offered tiny "gehakelte puppen," all61

bisque dolls clad in crocheted clothing, in its catalogues. In 2000, Theriaults auctioned off the Hertwig factory archives, including many samples of its dolls and figurines. Included in the sale were a number of examples of anthropomorphized animals. One lot consisted of a sample box of nodders with animal heads and human bodies, such as bears, rabbits, and chickens. Although the faces on these nodders had more exaggerated comical features, there is a certain family resemblance between them and the dolls pictured in this article. Another lot consisted of figural ashtrays and cigarette holders featuring googly-eyed cats and dogs with round glass inset eyes similar to the tiny ones used on the cat dolls in Illustrations 1 and 2. Hertwig is also known to have produced a series of all-bisque dolls and bisque immobile children leading a small pet on a string leash, an idea similar to the bear in the box. Finally, I have several small all-bisque dolls with "Germany" in similar lettering incised vertically down their spines; these all-bisque dolls are pictured in old Hertwig catalogues. But back to the original question; when the doll is also a pet, what sort of plaything can serve as its companion? The answer, as seen in Illustration 8, is to find them tiny human dolls to play with. The miniature dolls in their original crocheted clothing are 1.25 inches tall, and the teddy bear, an all-bisque doll completely covered by its crocheted costume, is 1-5 I 8 inches tall. German companies Her twig and Carl Horn Nachf advertised similar diminutive dolls dressed in crocheted outfits in the early years of the 20th century.

La Nicette continued from page 33

Catalogue Caleries Lilfayette 1933. This great store was the main Paris store selling Lil Nicette dolls during the 30s. Tlte dol/named Paulette and dressed in blue is a Lil Nicette. Private Collection.

Rare nil original skier. All felt doll_ stuffed felt hands are mitten-shaped. Thumbs are sewn to the adjnce11t finger to hold tile poles. Original felt clothing and wooden skis. Real leather shoes. Lil Nicette box. Circa 1934 +.Private collection.

Paulette. This particular doll seems to have bee11 made to be sold nt small price. Many Paulette dolls show problems with tl1eir mohair wigs which are often damaged because of the poor quality of the mohair. Paulette is the last doll to show the special LA Nicette artistic look with a bent and fumed head. All the following dolls have more common straight looking heads. Original blue green felt ilnt, dress (white felt collar missing) and shoes, silky socks. Buttons used on these dolls clothing are the sm11e as Raynnl's and this similarity causes confusion for collectors. We have no information about which company used these "Lenci type" butto11s first. 52 em. Circa 1933. Private collection.

Les Gnleries Lilfayette catalogue 1936 pict11res a Lil Nicette doll dressed in blue felt dress, hat a11d shoes.

They all have molded felt faces supported by two layers of buckram, and their heads, Like all La Nicette dolls, may tum so that the babies can look to the right or to the left, but not up or down. When both seams match up (the vertical one on the neck and the vertical one on the bod y) one may see that most of the time the baby's head was originally turned to the side. The arms and legs are made of stuffed cloth (or stockinette) sewn onto the cotton body. They have celluloid hands made by Petitcollin. A few babies have articu lated felt arms and articulated felt bent legs with bod ies constructed from a light pink (or w hite) muslin cloth with firm stuffing. They have mitten-shaped hands with fingers indicated by sewing. Those are usually of the larger size. They have blond or light brown mohair wigs with nice curls. It is no t a lways easy to make the distinction between the 1934 Raynal, the Venus 42 em babies and the Nicette babies of the same size and same period. A way to identify a Nicette baby is to examine the hands: the Nicette has long fl at Skier. Th is example lms stuffed cloth an11s, legs and body. Original ski costume is made of navy blue wool fabric, with a machine knitted hat. Black leather-like boots. Like tl1e previous skier, the thumb is attached to the adjacent finger to hold the ski poles. 42 C/11. Courtesy of Galerie de Chartres.

Monique. Long, rich white organdy dress with felt flowers and matching bonnet, white felt booties, silky socks. Voice box i11side the torso. 36cm. Circa 1934 +. Private collection.

Monique. Sweet smiling baby with an open/closed mouth showing two white painted tiny upper teeth seen for the first lime on Ln Nice/te babies. Sl!if/ed cotton stockinette bent legs and arms with Petitcollin celluloid hands. Pink stuffed cotton fabric body. Voice box inside the torso. Original white organdie dress and bonnet with blue and red embroidery. White felt Mary jane style sl10es and silky socks. Original box. 36 cm. Circa 1934 +. Private collection. Les Galeries Lnfayelte catalogue 1936 shows a smiling Ln Nicette baby known as a Sl1irley Temple type baby by collectors. It was in competition with Raynal and Venus babies. Private collection. Fanny. Similar to the baby in the 1936 catalogue. Tl1is doll was found in the original box. Original light blue silky fabric with matching bonnet; silky socks and blue felt shoes. Blond mohair wig, brown painted eyes and red pai11ted open/closed mouth sl1oWi11g two upper teeth. Stocki11ette bent legs and arms, Petitcollin celluoid hands. Voice box in the sttiffed cotton torso. 42 em. Private collection.

Nicole. Sweet baby with a pensive expression, closed mouth. Blue grey painted eyes. Blo11d mohair wig. Original dress and bom1et made of silky white material with printed flowers. White silky socks and felt Mary-jane shoes. 36 em. Courtesy of Musee de Ia Poupee Paris.

Galeries Lnfayette catalogue 1938. Shows France with blue felt dress and hat and white leather Mary-Jane shoes. Lllrger size of 52 em.

Flower seller doll. Brown painted eyes, bro-wn mohair wig. Dressed in Nice costume with a straw hat and straw basket with felt flowers inside. 42 em. Circa 1936 +. Yulia Feldman collection. Photo by Paul Sherman.

1930s Nicette golden paper tag marked "Paris Nice Made in France".

Doll dressed in Alsatian costume. Brown painted eyes, two tone red painted lips. No pink dots on the lower lip. Petitcollin celluloid hands. Blond mohair wig with braids. 42 em. This doll was produced in several sizes, the largest one being 70 em. The two 70 em dolls we carne across were both originally dressed in Alsatian costume. Courtesy of Musee de La Poupee Paris. Close-up of France. Two tone painted lips. France is modeling a dress made of the same fabric as the previous doll but with a different pattern. No hat this time, but just a simple red ribbon. 42 em. Yulia Feldman Collection. Photo by Paul Sherman.

France. This doll's look is ven; different from the earlier dolls. She is no longer shy or moody, but has a rather happy expression. Her original dress is made of silky white and red fabric and white organdie. Red felt hat and shoes, silky socks. The original box is marked Poupees Nicette Paris Nice. France seems to have had a lot of success and may be found dressed with the same red and white fabric but with different patterns. 42 em. Yulia Feldman collection. Photo by Paul Sherman. Au Louvre catalogue, 1938, shows France, a new Nicette doll with an unusual happy look.

ceiJuloid hands, while the Venus and Raynal babies have curved rhodoid ones. Another easy way to distinguish all La Nicette babies from Raynal and Venus is by looking at the nude body: La Nicette babies show the hand-sewn seam (to close the stuffed body) in the middle of their back while Venus and Raynal babies have it on the side. By the middle of the 30's, La Nicette dolls faces became less expressive, more common (though still attractive and artistic) and are increasingly difficult to distinguish from Venus and Raynal dolls. One may think that molds used by these three makers were made by the same sculptor. For those later dolls, a way to identify manufacturers is by looking closely at the painted eyes: Raynal and Venus eyes have an horizontal painted curved line (crescent shape) under the iris, while La Nicette examples have a curved line on the corner of the eyes, opposite to the upper painted white dot. Nicette

Marie. Interesting new mold with a rather round face. Petitcollin celluloid hands. Dressed in a Swiss costume. Tflis doll was bought at the 1940 Switzerland fair in U.S. 52 em. Private collection.

Michelle. Beautiful, rare Nicette doll modelling a luxurious organdy dress, silky socks, white leather Mary-Jane shoes. Ven; unusual hair style, found in her original (unlabeled) Nicette box. This doll is shown in the 1938 Galeries Lafayette catalogue with human hair wig. Nancy Lazenby collection and photo.

France. Original comnnmion dress made of white organdy. White leather Mary-Jeanne shoes, unmarked soles. 52 em. Courtesy of Musee de Ia Poupee Paris.

dolls do not have a red dot in the corner of the eyes while Raynal and Venus from the 30's often do. Also Nicette dolls (like Clelia dolls) may have long flat celluloid hands made by Peticollin while Venus used small curved celluloid ones and later, the same rhodoid hands as Raynal. Because of being nearly unknown by modem collectors, most of the time Nicette cloth dolls are once again unfortunately attributed to Raynal's production. In fact, the similarity between the Nicette cloth dolls from the 30's, Venus and Raynal dolls is such that we just do not know who copied who, all three makers having been, at one time or another, inspired by the art of Helena Scavini, though each of them sufficiently different to retain their own originality and beauty.
