I can see clearly now the rain is gone, here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for, it’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) sunshiny day!
A
fter a long, dark period of pandemic chaos and uncertainty, impacting in all aspects of life worldwide, the doll community is today experiencing new hope as we aim toward picking up the threads of our old lives. In-person shows are beginning to repopulate our calendars and collector gatherings are once again on the horizon. As we cautiously move toward these familiar activities, we will bring with us a wealth of knowledge earned over the past year.

The Value of Collector Friendships One of the benefits of the hobby we share is the many friendships made with other collectors. These friendships have helped sustain us all through these long months as we have reached out to our friends, breaking the bonds of isolation and supporting each other in difficult times.
A Deeper Understanding of the Power of Working Together
We are all participants in accomplishment, as people from around the planet banded together to keep each other safe, develop new medical care procedures and vaccines and to assist those facing economic hardship. The doll collecting community has a long history of supporting social needs and has been an integral part of these accomplishments.
A Broader Recognition of the Importance of our Hobby
In the midst of an often-troubled world, dolls and doll collecting continue to promote understanding and connection between people. The act of studying, displaying, and enjoying our collections is also a highly effective stressreliever, bringing joy and art into daily life.
The Hobby of Doll Collecting Will Endure
In times past as economic uncertainties arose, doll collecting experienced a slow-down, however over the past year doll sales have remained steady. Auction houses, show promotors, dealers and collectors have all developed new tools and practices for continuing to engage in our collecting endeavors. Research pertaining to dolls has been avidly shared through print mediums such as Antique Doll Collector and through online sharing of presentations, illustrating that wherever the future takes us our collecting world will be able to adapt and remain active.
The Certainty that Future Adversity Can be Overcome As students of history, doll collectors know that the human race has faced many challenges and that each time we have ultimately risen above those challenges to flourish. Tomorrow may not look like yesterday, some aspects of our pre-pandemic life may never return, but in their place will be new joys and fresh opportunities to connect, learn, share, and enjoy the hobby that sustains the doll collecting community.
The Realization that Change Can be a Good Thing
As necessity pushed us all out of our comfortable, well-established routines our creativity has risen to meet these changes. New ways of coming together have led to even more increased opportunities to interact successfully and many will remain with us in some form as we move forward.
Whatever tomorrow brings, it looks to me as though the future of doll collecting is truly going to be a bright, bright sunshiny day.

Five THE DEBUT OF
Mademoiselle Patience Rohmer eaders of Antique Doll Collector will be familiar with the name “Dollspart” a leading company supplying doll-makers, costumiers and sewers with body parts and accessories; the company is also known for their line of beautiful antique doll faces, and their one-fits-all jointed resin body. Recently the doll artist team at Dollspart added another face to their gallery of antique reproductions with the debut of a mold for a Rohmer doll called Patience. She joins molds representing Huret, Doleac, Barrois and Jumeau, so now there are five lovely faces available. Dolls of Maison Rohmer, Paris, France (1857-1880) were the work of Mm Marie Antoinette Leontine Rohmer. According to Doll Reference Mm Rohmer created “… elegant Poupée de Mode - lady fashion dolls 14 to 18-inches tall, made with a China or bisque swivel head, kid-lined shoulder plate, articulated jointed body of kid leather, usually with a body stamp of: MME ROHMER BREVETE SGDG PARIS.” Today Rohmer dolls are rarely found and extremely valuable. They are celebrated in this magazine – see for example the Dec 2011 ADC article by the late Lynn Murray, which exhaustively examines the brilliant way the Rohmer body works… or the article by contributing editor Samy Odin published recently in ADC which portrays a spectacular Rohmer doll and wardrobe in the collection of a Parisian collector. With her debut (at the “April in Paris” event of the French Fashion Doll Sewing Group on Facebook), Mademoiselle Patience Rohmer is the newest head mold in a line of beautiful antique reproduction dolls that fit the Dollspart resin jointed body. The team at Dollspart explain that when they look for an antique doll to include in their mold line, they seek to recreate only the rarest and most sought-after dolls. The Huret is an example, as it has always been among the most desired and elusive dolls in the doll world. They try to select dolls that are unique and coming from antique doll makers who have not previously been offered in mold form, such as their Barrios and Doleac heads. Also, there should be substantial interest in the dolls selected, as is the case with the portrait Jumeau that so

many collectors love, or, today, dolls from the House of Rohmer. In this case the quality of the originals, their scarcity, and the high value of the antique examples all have made Rohmer a natural choice. The Huret doll, fashioned in the style of a young girl for whom Enfantine clothing would be appropriate, sparked enthusiasm in people who want to sew for dolls. The simplicity of the Enfantine styles is a perfect starting point for those entering the doll costuming realm. The simple designs and construction are a great way to learn to sew for dolls. The Rohmer, from the same Enfantine costuming era, provides an equal opportunity for costumers, from the beginner to the most expert seamstress, to hone their skills. Dollspart Supply Co. has been in the forefront of doll supply businesses since 1940 when doll-making and the hobby of collecting dolls was at a high. In fact, during the 1950’s Dollspart had more than 1000 employees manufacturing dolls and parts for companies such as Effanbee, Ideal and Mary Hoyer. CREDITS: Darlene Lane is an internationally known doll artist who has won many prestigious awards for her work. Darlene has authored many articles and taught doll making for years. Darlene is recognized for her work with UFDC, having created numerous souvenir dolls for their special events. The reproduction that finally fooled us was made by Darlene Lane”. Cynthia Howe, doll costumer, seamstress and miniaturist, is the other half of the Dollspart development team. Cynthia, who worked as a dollmaker, instructor and owner of a hugely successful doll pattern company back in the heyday of dollmaking (1979-1995) turned her talents to dollhouse miniatures and miniature dollmaking in 1998. She is owner of Cynthia Howe Miniatures, a well-known miniature business. Cynthia fell in love with Mademoiselle Davida Huret when she debuted. fashion doll? Absolutely. There are enough examples in my doll room to inspire an
anthology of songs or poems, and still leave things unsaid. Hyperbole? Perhaps. But it is the Barrois
fashion doll and the Barrois face that continue to draw me in, and encourage me to purchase. It is also the inspiration for my article on Barrois dolls in
September of 2017. (For a thumbnail history of the Barrois firm, see the insert in this article.) 20

Making a doll the way modern dollmakers do, today,
with all steps of the process completed in turn, by one person, in 1860’s Paris, this was not the case. It took a
“village” to make a fashion doll! Businesses expanded into the growing market for doll-making supplies, including a
staggering number of parts, pieces, clothing and accessories. Maison Barrois was one among many. A shoemaker by trade, Dominique Marie Barrois entered the market, first as a
maker of doll shoes, and then gloves. He started his business
at the perfect time, when demand for fashion dolls was high.

The Theimers refer to the company as “spare parts wholesaler for Parisienne dolls,” in the seminal reference book, Encyclopedia of French Dolls, Vol. A-K. Through the four stages of the company’s history, 1842-1878, innovations and inventory expanded to supply doll manufacturers with all the heads, bodies and accessories a Parisienne doll
might require. Included in Barrois’ merchandise were the things that make doll collectors swoon; wigs of Tibetan wool, made on site; shoes and heeled boots with tassels; elegant wardrobes of fine fabrics; delicate underclothing and corsets, bustles, and pantaloons; hats, gloves, and parasols; papeteries and inkwells; games and toys and furry pets. Hatboxes, valises, trunks and furs, fans and sewing necessaires, belts, books and purses—oh, my! That got your attention, didn’t it? I tell people unfamilar with fashion dolls that they were like the Barbies of their day, and, like Barbie, had every accessory imaginable. Paris department stores such as Au Paradis des Enfants, Au Bon Marche, and Au Nain Bleu, which

Short history of Maison Barrois First period: 1842-46. Begun by the shoemaker, Dominique Marie Barrois, the company made shoes and gloves, and expanded their stock to include a variety of supplies for making dolls. The business was housed at 150 Rue St. Martin, Paris.
is still in business today, carried Barrois’ dolls and accessories. The market flourished, and so did Barrois. “Among Parisienne dolls sold by the wholesaler Eugene Barrois, a huge variety of doll faces exist, more or less with character faces. All of them made by the porcelain manufacture Lazare Frayon.” Theimer, in Panorama of Parisiennes Dolls. Why Frayon? He invented, in 1855, a superior porcelain with fewer impurities that could be pressed into a copper mold. The result? A beautiful, finely-detailed head, smoother and harder than before, with fewer kiln spots and other firing anomalies. Most doll makers could not afford kilns, or sculptors, or molds, let alone, pay the extra staff. It was complicated and expensive to make doll heads, and for that reason, doll suppliers, such as Barrois, commissioned other companies, such as Blampoix and Bru, to create heads for them.
Second Period: 1842-53. D.M. Barrois’ widow, Anges Desportes Barrois, took over the company and continued as a merchandiser of doll supplies. Inventory was vast and varied. Third Period: 1854-1874. “Golden Age of Barrois,” to this author. With burgeoning inventory and influence, the company provided supplies and dolls to toymakers, doll houses, and department stores in Paris, with a dizzying array of luxury items. Under the aegis of the elder Barrois son, Eugene Constant Barrois, dolls were marked with E and B on the shoulder plates, or with the initials of the buyers’ stores or businesses. Fourth Period: 1874-78. On the death of Eugene Constant Barrois, his widow, Louise Dehais Hortier Barrois took over the company. Business slowed. She returned to making ladies’ gloves and doll gloves, and in 1878, the company was sold to Halopeau. Public demand for Parisiennes lady dolls was waning. The age of the bebe was beginning, with dolls celebrating the idealized child. Let’s take a look at some Barrois fashion dolls, paradigms of lovely face and form, frozen in time for over one hundred fifty years. My descriptions may be subjective, but looking at many dolls over the years, certain characteristics stand out in the early, and later, dolls. Early Barrois faces have a softness about them. The faces are round, and full. It seems if you could touch a cheek, it would petal-soft and pliant. They may have pronounced double chins, and a gentle expression of innocence about the eyes and mouth. Often referred to as the “Renoir face” for their similarity to Renoir’s ladies’ faces, theirs is a more stylized look, more enfantine than an adult woman. The 11-inch doll came to me in her original, glass-topped box with a letter of provenance. Studying her small but well-crafted face one can see an idealized child, sweet, with full cheeks and round-shaped face. Her nose is broader and the placement of eyes, nose, and mouth are in childlike proportions. Her size makes her a good companion doll for a larger fashion doll, though she holds her own, displayed with things in scale to her petite size.

The doll in blue plaid is truly a sister to the previous doll, with the classic, earlier face. You can see the rounder face, broader nose, and softer cheeks, but she is no longer a child, like her 11-inch sister. This doll is certainly a young woman. Her stylish silk gown is entirely hand-sewn, and features a jacket with tight waist and a peplum that extends ove the ample bustle, an underskirt with embellishments, and an overskirt with tassels. Her artist-made hat, by Janice Hats, compliments her, as does a 3-piece jewelry set, with hair comb, and earrings. She is 19 inches tall, and has furniture in her scale. Her accessories continue to increase in number, to her delight! When is enough, really enough?

Let’s take a look at a large Barrois bride, at 23 inches tall. Most definitely a grown woman, with a full, fleshy face, a double chin, broad nose and full face, she has the look of the earlier dolls. She is everything a bride should be: beautiful, serene, lost in thought, and every inch, the blushing bride. Her painting is delicate and symmetrical, her kid body sturdy and upright. Wax flowers, a lace veil, perfume bottle, mother-of-pearl necklace, and a watch complete her jewelry. She wears a tiny wedding ring on one of her elegant fingers. Her frothy gown is sprigged with flowers and has a long train. Her tussy-mussy is just her size. Other accessories, with a bridal theme, abound.

The last of the Barrois dolls that I feel exemplify the earlier models is this little lady, at just under 16 inches tall, in deep blue striped silk. She wears her antique straw hat, and a Fleur de Lis watchpin and watch, a mesh purse on a chatelaine pin, and her aide de memoire. A modern mohair wig frames her face, and a coral necklace compliments the soft blush of her cheeks. See if you can identify some of her facial features of the earlier Barrois dolls.

My favorite Barrois dolls have faces from later on. Often described as the Motijo face, it was modeled after the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, whose maiden name was Motijo. Her bisque is flawless, her face more aristocratic, with a high forehead, longer nose and heavily-lidded eyes. Gone is the round face of earlier times. Her mouth is symmetrical, delicate, and the painting is exquisite. This later face is that of a mature woman, not a child or adolescent, and is more like a portrait. Serene and feminine, this is the look that compels me to purchase, like no other! This face seems to be favored in the marketplace, also, and is more difficult to find. Her arrival preceeded a hunt for all things bridal, beginning with her silk-satin antique wedding gown trimmed with wax flowers, ruching at the hemline, and panels of silk, front and back. She carries a rosary and a wax-flower bouquet. Compare this face with the portrait of the Empress Eugenie. Note the heavily-lidded eyes, the patrician high forehead, the elegant nose, longer and thinner than before. Her face is longer, the features more delicate and serene. This bride is pensive, self-assured, and blessed with timeless beauty. Antique DOLL Collector

There are two more Barrois dolls in the doll room that seem to me to be transitional, certainly different that the earliest faces, but with a feature or two in common. Dressed in a Carrie Hall gown of cream silk, lace, and russet cut velvet, this lady has very pale bisque, but look at the similarity of nose and mouth to the previous doll. With sharper features, and heavilylidded eyes, this to me is a later Barrois face, but it also shows the softness and rounded lower face of earlier dolls. She even has a double chin! She carries her studded purse, her lace parasol, and a chatelaine necklace. Her Wendy Feidt wig was custom made for her in English mohair. In the doll room, she stands next to a harp in her size. She plays adeptly, showing that beauty is, as beauty does. She is waiting for a companion doll to arrive from Connecticut, in a week, so they can share their love of music. No, the new arrival is not a Barrois. Imagine that!

Lastly, let’s turn our attention to another 23” originally-
dressed Barrois . Notice the characteristic sharp and long
nose, as compared with earlier noses, and the lidded eyes, and high forehead. In certain poses, these dolls appear
half-asleep. I prefer to think of them as lost in a reverie of lovely thoughts; luxurious gowns, salons crowded with
admirers; of faraway places to go and things to do, where their elegance is appreciated and celebrated.
This lady has that double chin again, but this is not the
same round face of the earlier dolls. Though her gown is
in the enfantine style, with a shorter skirt, long jacket with
pagoda sleeves and an underblouse peeking out at the cuff,
this doll is no child, but an assured young woman. Her face
has some characteristics of early and late faces together, and so I have chosen to think of her as transitional. Her face is
highly painted for Barrois. My considering her a later doll
could just be a whim of her mold and manufacture, the look about the eyes and nose. Earlier or later, in any case, her beauty is unmistakable.
She carries a crocheted purse with steel-cut beads and a
dog finial clasp, and her fringed parasol. An antique straw

poke bonnet with matching ribbon was a lucky
find, in size, style and color. The silk of her original
gown has been fringed on the edges. Passementerie tassels, a rosary, watch and watchpin complete her ensemble. She has to be on the lower level of her
cabinet, due to her weight and size, but so far, every visitor has been happy to get down to her level to have a closer look.
It is a good thing that we collectors of fashion
dolls do not all favor the same doll. That would lead to chaos, general confusion, and a lack of
goodwill! But to me, the arrival of another Barrois
doll-- whether she is early or later in manufacturer,
pale or highly blushed, child-like or adult-- is cause for celebration. If it is difficult for her, trying to fit in, as the new kid on the block, the discomfort is short-lived. Soon, the new arrival has her own
accessories, extra clothing, luggage
and vanity items, furniture in her scale, a hat or two, perhaps a game or other
diversion. Jewels. A petit-point purse... a corset.
Her sister dolls are kind and
accepting, and accommodate her. Do they resent, for even a minute, her
appropriating some of their things for her own?? Surely not.

THE MOST MAGNIFICENT DOLL EVER MADE By Donna W. Brown merican Character Doll Company was a mainstay in doll manufacturing from 1919 until 1968. Some of their prevalent dolls included Tiny Tears, Betsy McCall, Toodles and Tressy, but the most beloved was Sweet Sue. American Character Doll Company was founded by two immigrant brothers from Russia, Jacob and Max Brock, along with partner Ed Schoefer. Though from humble beginnings, by the 1950s the company employed over 1,000 employees working three shifts in addition to an array of engineers, designers, and chemists. Their first dolls were made of composition and were baby and toddler dolls. By the 1930s they experimented with rubber dolls, including Marvel-tot and Bottle-tot, but also continued to sell dolls, such as Sally Jane and Carol Ann Beery, with cloth bodies, mohair wigs and composition limbs and head. All their dolls were of quality and wore detailed attire. During the early 1940s, little girl dolls, including unnamed American Character dolls, were manufactured with all composition construction and floss or mohair wigs. Some of these composition dolls are mistakenly called early Sweet Sues. The name Sweet Sue originated in 1948 and debuted as a painted hard plastic doll with a mohair wig. She had delicate arms and hands with a slender body. She was strung, had open and close eyes with lashes and a pointed chin. She came in 18 and 22 inches and was sold in beautiful party dresses of organza. In 1951, Sweet Sue had a new face, mohair wig and came in 15, 18, and 20 inches. had a new round face with a pale complexion. Some faces were a matte finish, and some were glossy. She now had the color mixed into the plastic, not painted on and a special shoulder joint that allowed her arm to raise up and move forward. From 1952 to 1956 Sue kept her face but became a walker with a mechanism that was advertised as, “nothing to wind, nothing to get out of order.” She came with a list of eight instructions on how to hold her hand and have her walk along by moving her from side to side. Her hair was now a saran wig that could be washed, brushed, and styled, though curling was more difficult than curling the nylon wigs found on Ideal’s Toni doll. Most of the Sweet Sue dolls had hair the color of honey, though some blondes and dolls with dark brown or black hair were sold. In 1952 Sweet Sue’s popularity continued to grow. She was now available in multiple sizes that included 14/15, 18, 20/21, 23/4 inches. Multiple numbers exist because their heights were not consistent.

Her outfits were even more elaborate than before. Some were taffeta dresses, others plaid gowns with ruffled sleeves. Little girl dresses came with hair bows or straw hats. Outfits were named Sunday Best, Birthday Party and School Girl. Some of Sweet Sue’s clothing were more adult and elegant with names such as Mardi Gras, Cocktails, Bride and Cotillion. Gowns were accompanied by either crowns or flowers in her hair. Length of hair varied on the dolls over the years. Some dolls had shoulder length hair, or long waves down their back, while others wore curls that ended at their chin. One line of 18 inch dolls in 1952 came with a long hair piece, attached to her wrist in a container labeled Sweet Sue’s “Saran” chignon by Charles of the Ritz. Oddly, these dolls in elaborate gowns were strung, not walkers. The dolls came with a leaflet that gave directions for using the chignon for various styles including a demure bun, pigtails with bangs and pompadour. The chignons today are prized by collectors.

Though American Character continued to use saran wigs on Sweet Sue, in 1954 they also used a skull cap with rooted hair on their Sue dolls. The skull cap was also used on Tiny Tears another of American Character’s popular dolls at the time. American Character sold two special Sweet Sue dolls, Alice in Wonderland, 1952 and Annie Oakley in 1954. Alice came in 15, 18 and 21 inches and the 18 inch cost $10.98. She was all hard plastic with a long reddish blond wig. She wore a blue cotton dress with a sheer pinafore, had long knitted white stockings and wore a black velvet ribbon in her hair. She also had a small glass bottle attached to her right wrist with a black velvet ribbon. Many ribbons remain on the dolls’ wrists, but the glass bottles are extremely difficult to find. Annie Oakley, a popular TV character, came in the same sizes plus a 25 inch doll, and had shoulder length hair of the same auburn colored wig. She was all hard plastic wore green denim culottes, matching bolero edged in gold fringe, gold satin blouse, scarf, felt hat,
boots and a holster with two guns. Her name was embroidered across the culottes in gold thread. They began adding vinyl arms with jointed elbows to some of the hard plastic Sweet Sue dolls in 1955. The plastic arms were bulky and usually covered by long puffy sleeves. The dolls also had jointed knees, but the legs remained hard plastic. Often the necks of these walker dolls look too long and out of proportion, as do their arms and hands. They had skull caps and thick saran hair. For one year, 1953, there was a life size, 31inch Sweet Suzanne doll. She had a stuffed vinyl head with long rooted saran hair, vinyl arms and a walking mechanism. Another change came in 1954, when Sweet Suzanne became Sweet Sue. Skull caps and wigs gave way to rooted hair in a vinyl head, but the vinyl jointed arms remained as did the hard plastic body and jointed legs. A 31inch Sweet Sue bride wore a satin gown, a corsage, long veil, and hooped petticoat. She sold for $39.98, was Milway, Inc. catalog, featuring Sweet Sue dolls including Alice in Wonderland, 1953

advertised as Life-Size Sweet Sue and sold through 1956. To confuse collectors, there is also an entirely hard plastic 31 inch Sweet Sue with jointed knees. Through 1956, the smaller Sweet Sues remained a mixture of all hard plastic dolls and hard plastic dolls with vinyl arms. The same costumes were repeated over the years for the various dolls and not limited to size or version of doll. At other times, the clothing names remained but the styles were completely different. The 1953 gown entitled Junior Prom came on an all hard plastic strung doll and a plastic walker. The life size dolls were often dressed in the same gowns or dresses as the smaller dolls. Outfits were also sold separately for Sweet Sue, priced at $3.49-$4.98. In 1955, Simplicity sold patterns for Sweet Sue which included pajamas, jumper, snowsuit, coat, and gown. Replacement doll parts, heads, arms, legs, walking mechanisms and torsos could be purchased from American Character. Ding Dong School, an NBC children’s television program with teacher Miss Frances, featured Sweet Sue in a nationwide advertising campaign to retailers boasting that 2,739,00 children watched the program

Another ad in the trade magazine Playthings, August 1954 headlined, “For the thrill of a little girl’s life.” Then offered free wrought iron displays, traffic producing mats and glossy photos all backed by a powerful advertising campaign. Many of American Character ads for Sweet Sue ended with, “The Most Magnificent Doll Ever Made.” Many Sweet Sues were unmarked, while others have various markings which weren’t consistent with their size or dates manufactured. Several markings were AMER. CHAR. DOLL, American Char Doll, A.C. and Am Character. By the end of the 1950s, times were changing and little girls were beginning to fancy fashion dolls with adult bodies and stylish clothing. American Character, bowing to the change, totally revamped Sweet Sue in 1957 and she became Sweet

Sue Sophisticate. She was an all vinyl fashion doll with an adult body. They promoted her “peaches and cream complexion.” She came in 14 and 20 inch swivel waist dolls who wore strapless bras, nylon stockings and high heel shoes. Her rooted saran hair was in a short bubble style or longer flip. She was dressed in styles that included Teatime, High Society, American Beauty, and a Bride who wore a diamond ring. Sweet Sue Sophisticate soon came with a flexible ankle so she could wear flats or heels. She was manufactured in 1957 and 1958. The flexible foot doll came in sizes 14, 20 and 25 inches. Some of her outfits included Collegiate, Sunday Best, Bride, American Beauty and Birthday Party. In 1958, American Character used the Sweet Sue Sophisticate head, put her on a teenage body and called her Toni. Toni rivaled Ideal’s Tammy and was extremely popular coming in 10 1/2 in doll. She also was sold in sizes 14, 20 and 25 inches. Often the only way to tell the difference between a Toni doll or Sweet Sue Sophisticate doll is by the size of her breasts or if in the original box and clothing. American Character recycled the Sweet Sue name several more times. In 1960 they made an all-vinyl Walking Sweet Sue with peek-a-boo eyes. She was a 25 and 30 inch little girl doll and is a rarity today. In 1965 and 1966 Sweet Sue was marketed as a 14 inch toddler. Neither of these dolls had the success of the previous Sweet Sues. In the 1950s, Sweet Sue dominated the doll market. American Character continued the success as they transitioned from hard plastic girl dolls to all vinyl dolls because of the quality of the doll and clothing she wore. First advertised as the most magnificent doll ever made and later as Sweet Sue Queen of dolls, she cornered the market for over a decade and still charms us with her sweet face and beautiful wardrobe.

Box-Back Dolls’ House and Its Dolls

O
n a sleepy summer morning in July of 2020, I entered the kitchen and literally walked into a tall carton of unknown content. Almost immediately the telephone rang with a call from my daughter Elizabeth, asking if her early Christmas present to me arrived? Knowing my propensity for 19th century English dolls’ houses, Elizabeth had purchased one from Sondra Krueger of Chico, California, sight unseen, trusting in Sondra’s knowledge of my collection. Delivered across the country to my home in Virginia, there it stood – a truly thoughtful surprise I was eager to see! Ever willing to help, my grandsons Jesse and Eugene demolished the outer carton, then carefully removed the layer of packaging until a wonderful, Regency-style box-back townhouse emerged from a pile of tissue paper, bubble-wrap, and plastic peanuts. Measuring 30 ¼" high, 28" wide, and 10 ½" deep, this lovely wooden edifice was in itself sizable, while the hinged panel of the facade added 3 ½" more to its height. Modeled after London townhouses of the late18th century, English box-backs grew in popularity when the wholesale firm of Silber and Fleming began promoting them in 1879. These distinctivelooking houses, no matter the size, are easily recognized by collectors. They were simply made, some had central partitions, fireplaces or ranges, and, later, exteriors with balconies and green painted gutta percha awnings.

As the placement of a new dolls’ house is always a challenge, my daughter Catherine began rearranging furniture and accoutrements until somehow, she had created space where there was none to be found, and a pleasing new arrangement with a perfect space for the house, now existed. The new house needed a name and “Berwyck Hall” came to mind. Tall and straight, its flat roof acted as a convenient shelf for holding miniature furnishings when decorating the interior. The exterior has retained its original paper of outlined, rose-colored bricks, with quoining going up the corner of the front and side walls. Of necessity, the Chamber Master who crafted “Berwyck Hall” placed all the architectural detail on the facade, thus this slim-hinged panel extending above the roof has born the weight of crown molding, a string course, pilasters, Palladian windows with their heavy plates of glass, the front door with its pedimented surround, and wide steps, in perfect balance without any indication of warping. The entire structure is firmly attached to a sturdy green painted wooden base, and is appropriately formal in its appearance. Assorted flowers now decorate the downstairs window sills and above the steps as a softening touch that still retains a sense of reserve. Widow Layton, a parian doll and her Ward, a bisque doll with an unusual red mohair wig worn in a braid around her head, and brown glass eyes instead of the usual blue, walk fearlessly past “Chauncy” on their way to the park.

When opened, the interior boasts four equally-proportioned rooms: a parlor and a master bedchamber on the floor above a kitchen and dining room. The attractive flooring throughout is dark stained, and the wallpapers are original with individual small patterns. Strips of rounded, wooden molding top the paper in each room including the kitchen. The most notable feature is the unusual height of the very tall ceilings, which enable both slightly larger pieces of furniture, and dolls on the taller end of 7 inches, to appear as though they are exactly 1:12 inch scale. As the rooms are not deep, not a lot of furniture is required. A drawer which contained several pieces of dolls’ furniture and a few carefully-wrapped artifacts was emptied, as its valued content found their way into the London townhouse. It was a pleasure to see these somewhat-larger pieces helping to fill rooms which would ordinarily remain empty for at least the first few days. A long Biedermeier couch, an Evans and Cartwright table painted in their signature “foxy red” with an English china figurine of a seated

shepherdess, and the painting of an elegant lady in a frame made of ivory piano keys graced the parlor. A slightly-oversized, Boulle full-tester bed, with its original blue silk draping edged in gold Dresden papers, looked beautiful against the back wall of the master bedchamber. A long, wooden, Tudor-style trestle table and a Rock and Graner cane-seated chair with a rococo backrest, were placed in the dining room. The kitchen had the most items of interest available, such as an early metal stove having two lionhead medallions, and a pressed tin fish broiler with an open silver basket of pliable silver fish! Large, hanging wall scales with weights and an early rug beater were placed inside, as well as a table with a silver English toast rack complete with two large pieces of toast! There is also a blue painted pressed-tin mold in the shape of a rabbit, which recalls my childhood visits to my Uncle Jack, who would play “Run Rabbit Run” on his victrola. I still remember all the words to this happy song recorded by the English team of Flanagan and Allan years prior at the Palladium Theater in London. To my delight, my granddaughters Nona and Corina can enjoy the same amusing rendition today on Amazon Music.
The Major’s wife, the lovely Lady Eleanora, is paper-mache wearing flat-heeled slippers painted blue. She is pleased her original silk dress is green in color, and wears it in honor of her dear friend’s relocation to Ireland! She and Sister Mary Imelda will enjoy gentle laughter and good wishes over tea in the parlor. The young bisque maid with painted blue eyes and molded hair, attentive yet unimposing, quietly waits to serve a Heavenly dessert! The leather portrait album rests on an Evans and Cartwright table, and leaning against the Boulle bookcase is a leatherbound edition of “The Life of Alfred the Great,” published in London in 1878. A rare 18th century iron candelabra stands on a Tudor-style table at one end of the dining room, and an early china Meissen cupid graces a Biedermeier sideboard at the other end. A rare Rock and Graner chair is in front of a table supporting a Treenware tea service and a turtle-back dining room table holds a silver tray of rare goblets. The day is warm and the ladies are thirsty. Aunt Agatha, a paper-mache “Apollo knot”, is so named because of the fashionably-looped, high hair style. Her dress, coral bead necklace, and coral bead belt, are all original. She walks with Cousin Rosalie, a graceful “wax over”, towards green goblets of refreshing summer punch.
Mistress Mandy, the English poured wax little girl, stands atop a chair so that her demure, black bead eyes and rosebud mouth can best be seen under her wide hat. Next to her is Cousin Rosalie, a “wax over” termed as such because underneath her smooth coating of wax is a paper-mache doll! The method of wax coating was developed in Germany and was well received. Her lambs’ wool wig is naturally wavy and her features carefully painted; her wax over, high heeled, white boots are trimmed and laced in pale blue.
Despite a great start, it took more than half a year to fully complete the furnishing of this box-back. It took no time at all, however, to provide the needed dolls! The 19th century was a wonderful time to own a dolls’ house, as a plethora of dolls in the ideal small size were made in a variety of styles and materials. A sampling of those dolls found in my own collection provided an eclectic assortment of dolls’ house dolls from the 1800s. With its front panel opened wide, “Berwyck Hall’’ welcomed lovely Grodnertal peg-woodens, parians, china heads, and dolls made of paper-mache, wax, and bisque, as well as those termed as “Apollo knot” and “tuck comb.” (Those made in other mediums can be found through dealers or at auctions.) One of the dolls of interest in this house is a delicate china head from 1850. Dressed as a nun, she wears the hand-sewn, authentic habit of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambery, an Order founded in France in 1650. Her veil, coif, and wimple; the small crucifix worn above the cincture at her waist; and the long, black, beaded rosary depending from that cincture are perfect; as are the wide cuffs on her full outer sleeves, which in
turn cover narrow sleeves beneath. Even the flatheeled, black shoe-boots on her china feet are as they should be, and all fabrics used are correct. While it is not too difficult to locate larger dolls dressed authentically in habits of Orders such as Dominican, Carmelite, and Franciscan, dolls representing smaller Communities are not easily found, even though those Communities may be widespread geographically. The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambery for example, are a teaching and nursing Order with Communities throughout Europe and the United States, as well as in India, Pakistan, Brazil, and Madagascar, yet dolls do not seem to be found wearing their habit. Another feature, which makes the exactness of this nun doll’s habit unique, is her small size. “Nuns dolls” in dolls’ house size, are usually generically dressed in some variance of a black veil and a full-skirted white dress! While Communities of nuns following Religious Orders have existed since the 4th century,

Two sweet dolls have invaded the master bedchamber – a room they absolutely love – with its special pieces of Boulle furniture, pretty ormolu dresser set, and lightly fragrant bottles of scent. Especially admired is the large, decorative china perfume bottle from the 18th century. Younger sister Cecily Jane, wearing her original delicate frock, is an endearing Grodnertal peg-wooden tuck comb, with a unique heart-shaped face. She has opened her sister’s sewing basket to mend the dress on a tiny articulated peg-wooden doll for her shy wax cousin. Opposite her is a handmade chest from the late-18th century, which has two faded bows of ribbon in the back as hinges, and a third in the front as a clasp. The interior is lined in thin off-white paper over paste.
This rare and beautifully-fashioned prie-Dieu with its kneeling pad covered in gold silk, has the unusual feature of a crucifix designed in place above the arm rest. An early edition of only the New Testament of the Bible came in a hinged-top compartment under the arm rest.
dolls dressed as nuns have not been recorded prior to the 17th century. Those early dolls dressed by the nuns are extremely rare. My small nun doll was purchased from Ann Meehan of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a dealer and a collector of impressively-large dolls’ houses. Several years ago, she bought this particular doll from Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion. During her visit to Germany, Ann also purchased a beautiful, slightly-larger-than 1:12 inch scale, Boulle prie-Dieu, having a gold, silk-covered kneeler with an early, softbound edition of a Bible in its hinged drawer. This rare piece is now in the master bedchamber at “Berwyck Hall”. Knowing the Major would soon be home, “Chauncy,” a bronze dog with penetrating, dark glass eyes, waits patiently on the front steps of the townhouse. Ever on guard, he watches as two strollers pass by. Lady Layton, a parian of 1850, whose pale complexion is emphasized by the blackness of her widow’s attire, is enjoying a little stroll with her Ward, a pretty bisque doll with a red mohair wig instead of the usual blonde or
brown, and brown eyes instead of the usual blue. She is circa 1880. Inside, not all is as it appears to be. When admiring the two lovely dolls, one would assume that the refined lady with her painted blue eyes and softlywaved hair, and the young girl peering out from under her broad-brimmed hat with her black bead eyes, were mother and daughter – but they are not. “Mother” is a German “wax over,” meaning a wax coated paper-mache doll circa 1880. The little girl, however, is an English poured wax doll circa 1850. Both were purchased from Sondra Krueger a number of years ago. ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

In the parlor upstairs, the Major’s wife, the gracious Lady Eleanora, is a paper-mache doll circa 1830. Wearing her original green and gold silk dress and blue painted flat slippers, she has had a special blend of tea prepared for the happy visit of her dear friend Sister Mary Imelda, the china-head doll from 1850. In the master bedchamber next door, younger sister CecilyJane is seeking blue silk thread from her sister’s sewing basket to mend the dress of a perfect miniature peg-wooden doll circa 1850. She herself is a Grodnertal tuck comb from 1820, with an unusual heart-shaped face, and wearing her original delicate dress. This sweet doll was purchased in 2020 from Marion Maus of Ellicott City, Maryland, then President of the National Antique Doll Dealers Association. In the dining room below is a slim paper-mache “Apollo knot” (circa 1830), so termed because of her fashionable, hightwisted hairstyle. Her dress is original, as is her coral necklace and coral belt. She is about to pour a refreshing drink from a Bristol glass pitcher into a rare, early, green glass “hobnail” goblet; one of a set of four. The maid and housekeeper are
bisque with painted eyes and molded hair, circa 1880. Both dolls wear their original, manufactured uniforms with aprons, which are well made and attractive. Another bisque doll with nicely-painted features and original, manufactured apparel is the chef, circa 1890. He is of particular interest, as his toque (chef’s white hat) is molded to his head as one piece with his shoulder plate. Under the sleeves of his chef’s jacket, his arms are formed in a bent position, one more so than the other, which enables him to carry a kitchen towel or a kettle with ease. Although there would be more relatives and staff at “The Arches”, the Major’s country estate, the assemblage of dolls in “Berwyck Hall” represents a fair picture of dolls at home in the 1800s – but while others see an English box-back and its dolls, I see Christmas in July!
In the kitchen the large flour shaker with grating across its base and the salt box are early pieces made of tin. While the clock and the chair are Marklin, and the cabinet is Bing, the maker of the stove with its lionhead medallions is unknown. The lavabo with its basin of painted blue water is rare. Next to the stack of Treenware plates is a molded-bisque plate of ham and potatoes by Conta and Boehme of Germany, for the housekeeper’s enjoyment. Both she and the chef are bisque with nicely painted eyes and features. Her hair is molded appropriately for her station, and her essential keys are kept at her waist.
Since most chef’s hats are made of cloth, Edward is unique as his toque is molded as part of his bisque shoulder plate. He is preparing a delightful dessert – a traditional English trifle!
