ately the Paris antique doll scene has been quite sleepy, for obvious, pandemic-related reasons. But, during this enforced shutdown, people have had reflection time which has allowed new ideas to sprout up. An example is an exciting cross-collecting project for the near future. The historic French Auction House, Gros & Delettrez, one of the most influential businesses in the highly respected Parisian Drouot Institution, decided to open up to the collecting field of antique dolls with a different, fresh, approach. Already leaders in auction specialties such as Decorative Arts, Jewelery, Antique and Modern Paintings, Haute Couture Fashion, Antique Furniture, Books and Ephemera, Contemporary Art and so on, Gros & Delettrez are strong believers in cross-collecting, which is a key to reaching out to new collectors today. I was pleased to be asked to serve as the auction house expert in dolls matters, since I share their same philosophy in my own business, Chérubins. Dolls have a strong visual appeal, and their historical and patrimonial value makes them ideal collectibles for art fans. Moreover, antique dolls perfectly fit the aesthetics of today’s interior decoration. We see that more and more art lovers look at dolls as an inspiring resource that can build bridges between diverse art forms, for example, dolls can echo a fine painting, a bronze, a porcelain bibelot, a rare print or a haute couture accessory. The fun and edification that we experience in our collecting passions - gathering objects that have meaning and selectively combining them so they acquire a more specific sense, this is the essential fertilizer to grow our enthusiasm for historic artifacts! 6 The softly-painted face of this 18” Izannah Walker cloth doll regards us with tenderness, the edge of her yellowed wool cap softened by a flaxen ruffle. So adored was she that her nose has been nuzzled down, and her thumbs literally worn off. Her blue calico frock is off her gently rounded shoulders, and is cut according to the mode of her creation, possibly as early as 1845, when the Empire hairstyle was still in vogue in Bristol, Rhode Island. A sturdy ticking clot apron equips her for domestic duties like putting the kettle on and pouring a strong cup of tea. A linen bodice, double petticoats, and bloomers fill out her capacious skirt. Her over the knee stockings are so delicate they must have been knitted with sewing needles. If this old young woman could speak, we would hear inspiring tales of the creative ingenuity and industry of Izannah Walker’s doll business. Her appealing dolls were loved by throngs of people for many, many years.

he Greatest Generation, also known as the G.I. Generation and the World War II Generation, is the demographic defined as individuals generally born between 1901 and 1927. Its members include those who came of age during the Great Depression and went on to fight in World War II, as well as those who contributed to the war effort on the home front. The term “The Greatest Generation” was popularized by the title of a 1998 book by American journalist Tom Brokaw. Brokaw wrote that these men

and women fought not for fame or recognition, but because it was the “right thing to do.” World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It began with Nazi Germany’s attack on Poland in September, 1939. The United States did not enter the war until after the bombing of the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. As the bombing plunged the U.S. into the war, it spurred patriotism and a sense of camaraderie across the county.

The home front supported the war effort and its heros in nearly every way possible. Likewise, to boost morale, doll manufacturers began to produce dolls of every branch of the military, volunteer services, nurses, and other dolls reflecting Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s patriotic spirit. Madame Alexander offered, perhaps, the largest selection of these dolls with her Armed Forces collection. Prior to this collection and the United States entrance into the war, she had offered Miss America. This 14" doll with a Wendy Ann face, clad in red, white, and blue, featured her right hand molded into a fist with a hole in order to hold the flag. She is the only Alexander doll with this feature.

For her Armed Forces collection, Madame Alexander continued to use the 14" Wendy Ann face doll dressed in various costumes to represent branches of the armed services, which included a Soldier and a Marine, both with short hair depicting a male doll. Most of her dolls, however, represented women and their role in the war effort. Women in the Second World War took on many different roles, including combatants and workers on the home front. Madame Alexander’s dolls memorialized these women and their contribution to the war effort. She included: the W.A.A.C, representing the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps established to work with the Army, “for the purpose of making available to the national defense the knowledge, skill, and special training of the women of the nation;” the W.A.V.E., better known as the

WAVES, the women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II; the W.A.A.F. representing the “Women’s Auxiliary Air Force;” and the A.W.V.S., or American Women’s Voluntary Services, the largest American women’s service organization in the United States. These women volunteers provided support services such as message delivery, ambulance driving, selling war bonds, emergency kitchens, cycle corps drivers, dog-sled teamsters, aircraft spotters, navigation, aerial photography, fighting fires, truck driving, and canteen workers. Some of its work overlapped with the Office of Civilian Defense and the American Red Cross. Madame’s dolls also include civilian heroines such as the Salvation Army and the Defense Worker. These dolls are extremely rare with very limited documentation or photographs available.

Effanbee also produced military dolls; their most popular were made using the Skippy doll. He was 14" tall with a composition head and arms on a cloth body. Lower legs are composition to just above the knee with molded shoes and socks. These dolls included a Soldier,

Sailor and an Aviator as well as the very rare Marine and Cadet. The F.A.O. Schwarz Toy Company offered a special version of the Skippy Sailor and Soldier with “Magic Hands.” These dolls had magnets in their palms to hold an assortment of play items.

While Skippy was Effanbee’s most popular military doll, they also offered their Little Lady dolls depicting women who served their country, including a nurse and a Salvation Army volunteer. In addition, McCalls Needlework produced patterns for the Little Lady doll which included a Red Cross Nurse uniform and a Civil Defense overall. Another Effanbee doll reflective of the period is Todays Girl. Although not a military doll, she was produced during wartime when supplies were low. These 17" dolls featured the Little Lady head with painted eyes and yarn hair on a cloth body, all of which saved on supplies and kept manufacturing costs down. She most often came dressed in red, white and blue, truly reflecting the total war effort on the home front. This doll was only produced for a short time and is rather hard to find. All the major doll manufacturers of the time were producing military dolls. Vogue offered their version of the W.A.V.E and W.A.A.C.. Ideal offered a Sailor and Soldier using their Sunny Sam doll in both the all composition version and using the “Flexy Doll.” This doll had a composition head, hands and feet on a wooden torso with limbs of flexible cable allowing for a wide range of movement.

Of all the WWII dolls created. perhaps the most iconic, capturing the spirit and adult likeness of our nation1s young men and women in the Armed Forces, were those created by the Freundlich Novelty Co. Freundlich soldiers and other military dolls bear a tag with the quote “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition!!”.

“Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition!!” is an American patriotic song by Frank Loesser, published as sheet music in 1942 by Famous Music Corp. The song was a response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. It describes a chaplain (“sky pilot”) being with some fighting men who are under attack from an enemy. He is asked to say a prayer for the men who were engaged in firing at the oncoming planes. The chaplain puts down his Bible, mans one of the ship’s gun turrets, and begins firing back, saying, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.” The most significant doll with a realistic, true likeness created by Freundlich was that of the great General Douglas MacArthur. This 18" doll bares a tag with the slogan, “The Man of the Hour.” General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur was an American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He

was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. On May 8, 1945, the Allies accepted Germany’s surrender, and Winston Churchill announced VE Day - Victory in Europe. This day marks the end of WW2 in Europe. Then Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 15, 1945 - VJ Day - Victory in Japan. September 2, 1945 - Japan formally surrenders, ending World War II throughout the rest of the world. On that day General MacArthur remarks, “It is my earnest hope, and indeed the hope of all mankind, that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past — a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice.”

September 2, 2020 marked the 75th Commemoration of the End of World War II; a war that took the lives of over 405,000 U.S. military personnel. All WWII veterans are now over 90 years of age, and we are quickly losing the “Greatest Generation.” There is no better time to start collecting and preserving these dolls that touch our hearts and speak to what the American spirit is about. As a dealer I’ve sold many of them over the years, and the conversation with the customer usually leads to a story about a family member. We choose the dolls we purchase for many reasons; these dolls often have a very personal reason. The last one I sold was purchased because it reminded the customer of her father. We both lost our fathers in 2019, both having served in WW II, so the conversation was an emotional one that left us hugging and in tears. As Britain’s longestreigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has devoted her life to the service of her country. But nearly a decade before she became queen, she entered another kind of service when she became the first female member of the British royal family to become an active duty member of the British Armed Forces, making her the last surviving head of state to have served during During WWII, then Princes World War II. this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future… It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made in 1940, helped by my sister. We as children spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones, but now as then, we know deep down that it is the right thing to do.” Her words prompted me to recall another quote from a great man. Martin Luther King Jr., who said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” No words could better describe the “Greatest Generation.” Not just those from America, but all of those around the world that fought for what was right. As we once again find ourselves in turbulent times, it is my hope and prayer the we can rise to the expectations of Queen Elizabeth II, Martin Luther King Jr. and the “Greatest Generation,” finding the resolve to do the right thing.

My Dad, Edward C. Lintz, enlisted at the age of 17. He served in the US Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist mate aboard the USS Pasadena. He saw battles in the Philippines and Iwo Jima and was a witness to the signing of the armistice in Tokyo Bay. The Story of

TYNIETOY

he world of doll collecting is filled with stories of determination, ingenuity and community. Often times these stories revolve around independent women forging their way into a business world that was more unwelcoming than that of the present day. One story that exemplifies all of these facets is that of The Toy Furniture Shop in Providence, RI. This company is known for its Tynietoy line of dollhouses and furnishings, which are eagerly

sought and appreciated by collectors today. The company began modestly with a simple ladder-back chair created by Marion Perkins and shown to her fellow artisans at the Handicraft Club in Providence. Marion Isobel Perkins was born in 1872 to a wellestablished Providence family. She was educated at Miss Abbottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School for girls and accompanied her teacher Mary C. Wheeler to Paris for a year to study art. She studied interior architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), graduating in 1914.

After finishing her formal education, she worked briefly as secretary to Rhode Island’s Governor Lippitt before working as an interior decorator. The advent of WWI brought an end to her decorating business and Marion turned to an idea she had been thinking about for some time. She wanted to make miniature versions of Early American furniture. She felt sure that toys of this type would find favor with parents who wished to instill good taste in their daughters and with collectors and admirers of antique furniture. A company catalog of the early 1930s stated “TYNIETOYS are the ORIGINAL miniature reproductions of antique furniture, appealing to grown-ups as well as to children,” “They have the endorsement of the leading Arts and Crafts Societies of the country.” As previously mentioned, her first piece was a ladder-back chair made in about 1917. Marion shared her chair with her friends at the Handicraft Club. This club, founded in 1904 by a group of civic-minded women, was a hive of activity and encouragement for the many female members who endeavored to preserve and promote traditional handicrafts. Located on Providence’s East Side, close to both RISD and Brown University, the club eventually found a permanent home at the Truman Beckwith house property. One of Marion’s friends at the club was Miss Amey Vernon, also of Providence. Miss Vernon was born in Providence in 1876 to John and Amey Vernon. Amey was enchanted by Marion’s little chair and encouraged her to continue her work and expand her product line, convincing her to take workshop space at the club. This was the beginning of a partnership between Perkins (as company President/Vice President) and Vernon (as Secretary/ Treasurer) that would create some of the most beloved miniatures made in America. The two would draw heavily on their community of friends and acquaintances, creating a network which helped sustain their business for over 30 years. Marion began creating more miniature furnishings copied from early American designs. These were often based on pieces in the Pendelton Collection held by the RISD museum. Charles Leonard Pendelton was well regarded for his expertise in the study of Early American decorative arts and furniture. In 1904 his collection was willed to RISD’s museum, becoming the foundation for a broader collection of period furnishings. The display of this collection was overseen by Eliza Greene Metcalf Radeke who would in 1913 become the President of RISD. As a student at RISD at the time, Marion would have been well familiar with this collection. Radeke was also a member of the Handicraft Club. Again, company catalogs proclaim that Tynietoy piece’s “design, construction and finish are the result of intensive research backed by the best authorities.” In addition to the RI pieces, other historic furniture such as the desk and chair at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and pieces from Mount Vernon were also recreated in miniature by the company.

The Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company’s Netopian magazine reported on and promoted local business information. Perkins worked primarily in a scale of one inch to 1 foot. Once Marion had created enough stock, Amey initiated a series of what were referred to as “Drawing Room Sales.” Gathering their society friends, these home parties offered a venue for direct sales of Marion’s miniature doll house furniture to a group of women who had the interest and means to purchase artfully made, quality toys for their children.

In 1920 the first listing for The Toy Furniture Shop appeared in the city directory. A small article entitled, A Doll’s House That Could Not Fail To Make a Merry Christmas in the November 1920 issue of the Ladies’ Home Journal shows plans for the company’s Nantucket Cottage, telling the reader that “Two women were the builders assisted by a convalescent soldier,” This mention of a wounded veteran leads to another interesting piece of the story. In 1919 RISD created a program for the rehabilitation of wounded WWI soldiers, teaching them woodworking, drafting, and other skills. It is believed that Georges Henri LeClerc was the soldier mentioned in the LHJ article. He was indeed a participant in the RISD program and was one of the earliest employees of the Toy Furniture Shop, eventually working as shop foreman. It is easy to picture Perkins and Vernon, as their business grew, turning to their Handicraft Club friend Eliza Radeke for a recommendation on hiring help. The earliest pieces of Tynietoy were a little naive and not always perfectly scaled but they did capture the look and feeling of the reallife American furniture designs they emulated. In 1923 the famous artist Sydney Burleigh, who was active in many Providence artist’s organizations, helped to refine the scale of the Tynietoy product patterns, which improved the design quality of all the pieces. In 1925 the company moved into the first floor of the Handicraft Club’s barn at 227 Benefit St. An article in the October 4th edition of the Providence Sunday Journal Bulletin tells us that the company now had 15 to 20 employees. The furnishings made by Tynietoy often used simple techniques to create effective reproductions of real pieces. The American furniture forms recreated in miniature are readily identifiable. The details of many of the pieces, such as inlay designs, carved details, and upholstery are painted on. Drawers and cupboard doors opened and have brass or wooden knobs. Painting of the pieces was done in-house and often by RISD students.

Many Tynietoy pieces had painted finishes in shades of green, blue, pink, yellow, and white as well as being available in stained wood finishes. Tynietoy furniture and accessories were sold in green, paper covered boxes. The paper label on the box was an enlarged version of the paper labels used on early furniture pieces. During the 1920s the company achieved success and continued to expand its workforce both on-site and by using out-workers to create the linens and curtains used with their houses. Marion and Amey were astute enough to reach beyond their local market and network of patrons, selling their line not only from their company showroom and catalogs, but also through large retailers such as FAO Schwarz in NY and Boston, Macys in NYC, Montgomery Ward in Chicago, Halle Bros in Cleveland, and Leiter Dry Goods in Kansas City, and through small specialty shops in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington, DC. The stock market crash and the ensuing economic depression had a big impact on The Toy Furniture Shop. During the 1930s the company moved several times in search of more affordable rental space. Perkins and Vernon would again turn to their community of patrons to promote sales and to keep the business afloat. It has

been reported that their friend, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller sometimes underwrote their rent and payroll during this period. The business also tried a number of strategies to promote sales in the tough economic climate. In the pre-Christmas season of 1930, the company used a direct marketing strategy to encourage past customers to reorder for the holiday. In 1931 they offered one 4-room Village House in kit form at half the price of the fully constructed version. In 1933 Amey Vernon retired, leaving Marion to assume the positions of President and Treasurer. By 1938 LeClerc chose to leave the company, as new members brought into the management team tried to streamline production. These changes made under the direction of the Toy Furniture Shopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new management team would seem to indicate that Marion was beginning to turn over certain aspects of the company to others, although she remained listed as an officer of the company until 1941.

The company offered 6 different models of dollhouses: the two-room South County Farm House, the four-room Village House, the six room Townhouse, the nine-room Colonial Mansion, the five-room Nantucket Cottage, and the six-room New Model House. These could be had with or without electrical wiring and could be purchased with or without furnishings. The Colonial Mansion was their largest house and in the early 1930s the electrified house sold for $250 unfurnished and $400 furnished (approximately $4,500 - $7,000 in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dollars!). Not only was the upholstery on Tynietoy furniture painted, but also many architectural details of their dollhouses were as well. Note the painted door casings and raised panels on the door and fireplace. These simple trompe l’oeil (“fool the eye”) details were very effective.

By the early 1940s, both the world and the Toy Furniture Shop were changing. In 1942 Mr. Fletcher Taft took over the management of the workshop, and Louise Fales took over the sales end of the business. The company continued on through the rest of the 1940s facing the challenges of wartime shortages and into the early 1950s, but it appears that during the last few years the company was selling off its remaining stock rather than making new inventory, finally closing completely in 1953. Amey Vernon died on August 10th, 1940 and Marion Isobel Perkins died December 12th, 1947. Their business began with a dream of creating beautiful, historically inspired toys to celebrate American decorative forms and to teach good taste to new generations. Along the way they not only found an income stream and source of self-expression, but also strengthened the bonds within their local community, helped support the reintegration to the workforce of a number of WWI veterans, gave work to local artists, and left a legacy for generations of collectors. Two women using the power of dolls to better their own lives and the world-pretty big achievements from the world of miniatures!

Rosa’s Black Character Dolls Rosa Wilder Blackman (1881-1966) By Beverly Washington Flowers All Photos by the author

osa Wilder Blackman (1881-1966) was a sixty-year old white woman when she produced her first commercial dolls in 1941. Rosa’s hand-molded clay headed dolls have padded cloth bodies over a wire armature. Rosa’s Negro Character dolls are modeled after real black individuals from Homer, Louisiana. A study of fifty-two Rosas revealed three doll design phases, and attests to the dolls’ lasting historical value, and the potential contributions of collectors to history. The earliest commercial doll design had clay heads, hands, and feet. Their faces are dignified, solemn, and realistic. The eyes are tiny, inserted black sewing beads with the center hole serving as an iris. Many of the men have beaded teeth and one gold tooth. These Rosas have highly detailed clothing and exquisitely detailed accessories. The arms

can be re-positioned. The dolls are balanced to stand on their clay shoes without support, or designed to be seated. The tallest female dolls are 9-inches, and men are up to 10 ½-inches tall. Only a few, if any, of these dolls are labeled. The second design phase begins the transformation from an authentic representation of real people to caricatures with exaggerated facial features. Rosa eliminated the complicated installation of eye beads in her design. She handmolded white shells into the clay to create eyes and painted a single black dot for the pupil. Some Rosas have beaded teeth. Most dolls have cloth hands. Rosa created cloth high heeled shoes by extending the armature through the foot into the wooden base to balance the dolls. Most dolls with flat shoes are glued to the base. The armature is not extended through the shoes. She also affixed a simple business address label with the doll’s handwritten name or occupation.

Rosa’s Crapshooters are two men mounted on a wooden base playing a dice game. They are 7-inches tall kneeling. Rosa’s School Teacher is a blend of all three of her design changes. She has the beaded eyes and teeth of a first-generation doll. However, she also has the second generation’s address label, with her name penciled onto the label, handmade glasses stitched into her hair, and cloth hands. Yet, The School Teacher’s bubble gum lips and distorted face is a third-generation trait. She is 8 ½-inches tall.

The three faces of Reverend Roy A. Mayfield (1876-1944), who founded The Homer Normal Industrial and Bible Training School for Black Children. The school was the first to teach Black children in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. The first face represents Rosa’s first generation of dolls. The Reverend has beaded eyes, and teeth, clay hands, and stands independently at 10 ½-inches tall. The second face represented Rosa’s second generation with two-tone painted eyes, cloth hands, and mounted on a wood base. He is 10-inches tall. The third face represents Rosa’s Third generation’s painted dotted eyes, cloth hands, disproportional nose, pink mouth, and is 9-inches tall mounted on a wood base. Rosa’s modern women series features dolls with shiny faces and rouge on her cheeks, a gold tooth, and a short 1940’s dress that shows off her legs. This lady also has leather shoes, which is a rare feature on secondgeneration dolls. She is 8 ½-inches tall.

Rosa’s last dolls are remarkably different from the first two generations. The dolls are the shortest with women approximately 8 ½-inches tall, and the men about 9-inches. The faces are distorted and exaggerated. The mouths of most men and women have bubble gum pink lips with no teeth. The fabrics are plain and lack the exquisite details of earlier dolls. Both men and women have frames extended into a wood base and glued in place. Rosa expanded on her label. She included the doll’s personality and role in society. The new detailed label allows collectors to identify the earlier unlabeled dolls. The unlabeled woman ironing could be assumed to be Mariah because all later versions of a woman ironing are called Mariah. The same is true with all the dolls in the line; the subsequent doll labels describe the activity of earlier dolls. An original clay, freestanding Reverend Mayfield with a pulpit, can be identified because all future Reverends with a pulpit are labeled Reverend Mayfield. It is impossible to determine why Rosa’s designs changed so radically. In at least one updated catalog, Rosa described her dolls as “outstanding in originality and noted for their perfection of detail in facial expressions, poses, and racial characteristics.” Yet, the dolls featured in that catalog had caricature facial features that are crude with disproportionality. changed to satisfy her buyer’s desire for cheerful, harmless personalities. The dolls may not have been commercially viable as realistic representations due to the escalation of racial tensions during the 1940s. In Rosa Wilder Blackman: Historian, Sue Hefley wrote in 1962, “The image of the Negro of the old south is something we of that region hold in common. Because it is an image which is fading with time and because it is one which should not be lost, Mrs. Blackman’s work in preserving it has a very special importance. As long as her dolls may be seen and studied or faithful photographs of them consulted, this period of history lives” (p. 26). To that end, Rosa’s early dolls preserve a historical period that mirrored the life and perceptions of Black people until the 1950s. Rosa still contributes to an understanding of history today. One Character, Roy A. Mayfield (1876-1944), founded the Homer Normal Industrial and Bible Training School for Black Children.

The last two dolls are examples of Rosa’s bubble gum pink thirdgeneration dolls. Both dolls are 8 ½-inches.

The school was the first school to teach Black children in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Artists have a role in depicting history. Rosa’s first generation is an excellent example of how artists can influence the perceptions of other cultures through their work. Artists must be aware of the distorted images they may be reflecting in their work. Consumers must support artists that accurately reflect Black images at play, work, and in the community. Rosa only produced commercially for ten years until she was in her early 70’s. Finding any Rosa is difficult. All Rosa dolls are collectible as folk art. Collectors may have doll labels that name and describe Sister, The School Teacher, and the female field workers. There may be some previously unknown dolls in private collections. The Herbert S. Ford Museum in Homer, Louisiana, has a collection of Rosas on public display.

his surprising “suit for home or boarding school” originally appeared in La Mode Illustree in 1867. To modern eyes, it’s not exactly ideal for exercise! Yet for its time, it represented freedom and forward thinking—the young girl shown in this outfit wasn’t wearing multiple petticoats or a hoop. Someone in her life encouraged her to run and play, believing that vigorous activity would help her become a healthy young woman. As with all schooling, physical education program methods and goals varied widely by country. Both preand post-Revolution, the French government strove to regulate education and make it widely available, though significant opportunities certainly favored the wealthy and those who lived near Paris. In general, boys were given an academic education while girls’ programs emphasized the domestic and social graces, to prepare them for motherhood in society. Girls either learned fully at home, with their mothers playing an active role, or they were sent to boarding schools between the ages of 8 and 13, then finished their education at home. French boarding schools were usually housed in large, institutional style buildings because they were either influenced or run by Catholic convents. Daily schedules were strictly regulated with an emphasis on traditionalism, whereas English and American boarding schools were often family homes where the girls’ activities revolved around domestic life and experimental education methods. There was no real consensus on what physical activities girls could or should do, but it was generally agreed that some kind of movement was healthy. Society discouraged girls over 12 from too much exertion; anything beyond dancing and horseback riding was believed to injure ladies or make them less feminine. Health advocates, however, found this ridiculous and encouraged exercise as a way to combat

upper class feminine “illnesses” like melancholy and hysteria. Interestingly, Dress Reform ideals went hand in hand with physical education throughout the 19th century. Activists and textbooks railed against fashionable dress, which constricted movement and compressed the internal organs. There are references to medical professors who found female bodies useless for educational dissection because they were too deformed by a lifetime of corseting. Contemporary manuals show that formal physical education courses—whether taken at home or at school—taught calisthenics, an early name for women’s gymnastics, and were often set to music. Light equipment like cane wands, dumbbells, parallel bars, and pulley or balance systems supplemented the basic exercise routines. Most commonly, however, younger girls were simply encouraged to play. They could run, skip rope, play battledore and shuttlecock, and learn to dance or ride horses, as previously described. But even these had cautions: girls should not practice the “violent” country dances, and they should learn to ride side saddle on both sides of the horse to prevent twisted spines. Non-competitive activities were considered especially appropriate for girls, as they improved health in a ladylike way. Apparently, the desire to win was a distressingly manly habit! Once a French doll has agreed to exercise, however, what she wants to know first—and is therefore most

important to her costumer—is what to wear; she needs freedom to move, but it’s imperative that she remain as modest and stylish as a school girl can be. It’s actually an important question because mid-century clothing was far more restrictive than in earlier decades, and there was proper clothing for every activity. Calisthenics manuals made sure to address the topic. In 1831, the Journal of Health stated simply, “Attention also is to be paid to the dress: it ought to sit easy in every part – trowsers (sic), and light and tolerably large shoes are to be recommended.” Mid-century photographs confirm that the outfits were loose-fitting, similar to bathing costumes. By 1880, Cassells Household Guide had more detailed advice in “Calisthenics for Ladies.” “It is a very usual plan in America and France, where the subject has been carefully studied, to wear a special costume, consisting of a loose blouse, with a sash at the waist, and Turkish trousers; or in place of the blouse, a Garibaldi bodice and skirt; dark blue serge with white or scarlet braid, or unglazed holland with the same sort of trimming, are most in favour, being both strong and light. Grey and red is another favourite mixture. The boots should be an easy fit, with low heels….such a dress, while ensuring perfect ease and liberty of action to the wearer, is by no means unbecoming.” Violette’s costume consists of a gathered, belted yoke dress with “trousers” visible beneath a shortened skirt. Yoke dresses are familiar to collectors of midcentury papier mache, China head, and Izannah Walker dolls representing young girls. The style offered children ease for growth and active play, but middleclass women also found it useful for house and factory work, especially when made up in sturdy, washable cotton fabric. The trousers are reminiscent of bathing

costumes, but also of the controversial “Bloomer” outfits based on Turkish harem pants. The style would have been far less scandalous for young girls to wear than for women. Girls had worn pantalets under short dresses to cover their legs since the early 19th century, but ladies did not uniformly adopt such undergarments for another 50 years! While bloomers were never popular for street wear, they were increasingly accepted as athletic wear. Lady cyclists in the 1890s wore a knee-length version called “athletic bloomers” that continued to be seen in girls’ physical education uniforms well into the 20th century.

Before beginning, cut the following pieces without patterns: Batiste

General Instructions

• Seams are ¼” unless otherwise stated • Costume was NOT fitted over undergarments, but your doll may wear a short chemise and slim pantalets if you prefer. To accommodate these, cut the waistbands slightly larger.

Dress Yoke Bodice

1. Make piping—Fold 14” contrast bias strip in half lengthwise, and lay the piping cord down inside the fold. Stitch by hand close to the cord with matching thread, then trim excess seam allowance to an even ¼”. 2. Baste piping to the outside edge of the yoke (fabric A only), face up. Line up the raw edge of piping with raw edge of the yoke, stitching close to the cord. As you look at the yoke, sew down the right-hand side and all around the edge, but do not sew up the left side. Clip piping seam allowance to turn corners. Trim away extra piping. Turn right side to back and press. 3. Lay yoke lining (fabric C) over the yoke, right sides together. Sew down the left side of the yoke, then turn to the back and press. Turn under right-hand edge of the lining ¼” to cover piping, and slip stitch in place. Baste lining around neckline and outside edge to hold layers together.

4. Cut two 3” pieces of ribbon and tack them at a slight diagonal to the right side of the bodice, facing UP toward the shoulders. Attach just under the piping. 5. Sew 2 rows of small gathering stitches across the back. Pull up to fit the yoke, then sew together, as close to the cord as possible. Trim and overcast the seam, then press so the back faces down and seam faces up. 6. Making sure you have a left and a right, turn under the edge of each front piece twice (⅛” and ¼”) and hem. Then sew 2 rows of small gathering stitches and attach to yoke as with the back, sewing over the ribbons. Trim, overcast, and press. 7. Sew narrow mock rolled hems on each sleeve from wrist to the dot. Sew 1 row of gathering across the sleeve head to help with easing if needed. Sew 2 rows of gathering across sleeve ends, then pull up to fit cuff pieces. 8. Prepare cuffs (fabric B): Sew ribbon trim to right side of cuffs about 3 ⁄16” from one long edge. Fold in short edges of cuff ¼” and press. 9. Sew sleeve end to cuff, just above the ribbon. Trim seam evenly and press toward the cuff. Press ¼” of cuff up toward the wrong side and hem in place, making sure a tiny bit of the contrast fabric shows beneath the ribbon. Sew short ends of the cuffs closed, then add a button or bead to the one side of the cuff and make a thread loop for the opposite end. 10. Firmly sew sleeve head to bodice, pulling gathering thread if needed to ease into place. Trim and overcast the seam, then press toward the sleeve.

11. Sew side and underarm seams from waist to wrist vent. Trim, overcast, and press the seams. Run 2 rows of small gathering stitches around lower edge of bodice, but do not pull up yet. 12. Steam the neck bias strip into a curve and press back one short edge ¼”. Starting with this edge, sew to neckline right sides together. Trim excess bias at opposite end, leaving ¼” to fold back as at beginning. Trim neckline seam to ⅛”, then press bias strip up and toward the back. Press one long edge under ¼” and hem in place to back of neck. Gather lace and sew to inside of collar.

13. Pull up waist gathers to fit doll with a bit of ease, not tightly, to accommodate knickers later. If your doll will wear any undergarments, be sure to fit the bodice over them. Tie off gathers by winding the threads around pins and even out the gathers. Baste on the contrast waistband to test the fit—it should fit the bodice with an extra ¼” to turn under at each end. When fit is correct, remove basting threads to tuck in the ends of the bodice ribbons. They will sit diagonally on the bodice, about 5/8” from the right side opening and 6/8” from the left side as you look at it. Sew waistband in place, remove visible gathering threads and press seam down toward skirt. Do not overcast the seam. Trim away excess bodice ribbon. 14. Cut an 8” length of ribbon and sew onto waistband, working from the right edge as you look at it. Begin by turning ¼” to the inside, sew it down, then continue around the waist and secure stitching ¼” from the left edge. Leave tail to be trimmed later (about 1-¼” long).

1. Sew contrast band to lower edge of skirt, trim, and press toward the band. Turn remaining long edge ¼” to the back, press, then fold and press entire band in half lengthwise. Open out folds and sew ribbon down center of the right side of the band. 2. Hem skirt front (short) edges—fold back each edge twice (⅛” & ¼”), press, and hem in place. Refold skirt band toward the back and hem in place, trimming away first turn of the hem band if there is too much bulk. 3. Skirt can be cartridge pleated or box pleated to fit the waistband, but be sure to leave about ¾” flat on each side of the center fronts. The sample skirt was box pleated to resemble the original illustration. I began with a double box pleat at the center back, then worked toward each edge making 1-¼”single box pleats. Overlap pleats to fit the waist; each of mine required a ⅜” overlap. Pin and baste in place to check that the arrangement is even before sewing the skirt onto the lower edge of the contrast waistband. Make sure the ribbon appears centered on the band once the skirt is sewn on. Trim the seam, then press up toward the bodice. 4. To cover raw edges on the inside, turn in and press ¼” all around the lining waistband (fabric C)—trim as needed to fit the contrast waistband. This is the wrong side. Place right side up over the bodice and skirt seams, then hem in place. 5. Pin lower edge of skirt right over left, and blindstitch together on the wrong side, 3” up from hem. 6. Close dress with 3 hooks and thread eyes on the bodice, 1 on the waistband, and 2 on the upper skirt. Sew beads or buttons down the front of the dress, spacing them ½” apart. You should be able to fit 3 on the yoke, 3 on the bodice, and 11 on the skirt, but if they are a different size than the sample garment, just arrange them evenly. 7. Trim away excess ribbon belt as needed, leaving about 1” from where you stopped sewing on the left side. Cut a rounded end and seal with the glue/water mixture. When dry, sew a hook to the wrong side of the ribbon belt, and a thread eye to the waistband beneath it.

Trousers

1. Narrow hem the center back opening edges from the dot to the waist. 2. Right sides together, sew the center front seam, then press, trim, and overcast. 3. Lay the trousers flat and sew 2 rows of small gathering stitches across the top edge and across the bottom of each leg.

4. Sew ribbon trim to right side of leg cuff pieces, about 3 ⁄16” from edge. Pull up trouser leg gathers to fit the cuff pieces, then sew with right sides together. Trim seam and press down toward cuff. Fold back remaining long edges of cuffs 3 ⁄16” toward wrong side, press.

5. Fold short ends of trouser waistband ¼” to wrong side, then pull up waist gathers to fit the band. Sew with right sides together. Trim and press seam toward the band. Fold long edge of band to wrong side ¼”, then hem in place over the seam. Press waistband flat. 6. Sew center back seam, then press, trim, and overcast.

7. Fold trousers right sides together and sew inside leg seam, including across the folded cuff. Trim the seam, then turn the cuff toward the wrong side and hem in place. Press and overcast the rest of the leg seam. 8. Test trouser fit on the doll, then sew on hook and thread eye for closure. The waistband edges should overlap about ¼”.
