SOPHIA’S GIFT
by Karen B. Kurtz with illustrations by Loran Chavez https://sophiasgiftbook.com Ages 8 and up Gold winner, 2021 Human Relations Indie Book Awards Sophia’s Gift is a heart-warming tale of a young girl who finds comfort during the horrors of the American Civil War in a beautiful china doll that arrives unexpectedly in the family’s shop in 1862 Culpeper, VA. As battles rage nearby, a cease fire is called to remove the wounded from the battlefield. Aid is enlisted from the townspeople. Sophia’s mother tells her to bring all fragile items to her bedroom, and, shortly after, a wounded Confederate soldier is brought to Sophia’s house and placed in her bedroom to recover. One fragile item that has a place in her heart is the china doll she calls Grace Darling. The doll sits in her room, a silent witness to the days that follow, while Sophia keeps
the soldier company and helps him recover. In that time, the soldier realizes how important this doll is to Sophia, and when he’s ready to leave, he presents her with the gift of Grace Darling to call her very own as a token of his appreciation for her many kindnesses. Sophia’s Gift will pique a young reader’s interest in learning more about the lives of civilians during the American Civil War (1861-1865), and encourage them to see the importance of dolls as constant companions through the best and worst of times. It shows, even in times of great struggle, kindness to others is a most welcome gift.

A Big Bear Event
Bonzo is 8-1/2” tall and from c. 1927; his IDs include his button and red ear tag.
Pupp-Bully is 10” tall and from c. 1929; he has the head of a Bulldog and a humanized body.
It isn’t often that a major auction house devotes a whole sale event to Teddy bears! But that is the case in November at Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion. Ladenburger has their Steiff auction scheduled for November 6, 2021, and it can be previewed at www.spielzeugauktion.de/. See their ad in this issue on page 11 for more information. Of course the animals at auction are not just any Teddy bears, they are from a major, never-before-seen Steiff collection. We asked Rebekah Kaufman, a Steiff expert, about the auction. Rebekah is a Steiff historian, blogger, and consultant, and also a contributor to this magazine. She specializes in the identification and valuation of vintage Steiff button-ear brand Teddy bears, dolls, and animals, and is quite excited about the Ladenburger event! Here are her comments, plus pictures and descriptions of some of the breathtaking temptations to come. Her website is Dicky is 15” tall and was www.mysteifflife.com. manufactured in the 1930-37 Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion GmbH offers some of time frame. the finest Steiff bears, animals, and novelties imaginable at their November 6th, 2021, Steiff Special Auction. From a private American collection, these items include one-of-a-kinds, archive finds, and treasures in time-capsule-new condition. Here are some highlights certain to catch the eye of collectors worldwide. The fully jointed, hand-painted velvet Bonzo, upper left, is one of only 115 known examples. His size and presentation are exquisite. These seldom appear on the secondary market, consistently realizing over $25,000 at auction in the past. This dressed “Pupp-Bully” dog doll retains his original archive tag. An absolute rarity; the only other doll like this that I know of is a “Pupp-Charly” that also sold through Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion in 2008. This as-new blonde mohair Treff the Bloodhound is complete with her button, ear tag, and chest tag. Her design was patented; her eyeball is embedded in her eye socket and surrounded by fabric eyelids, giving the dog her sleepy expression. This white mohair Dicky bear features the model’s signature stenciled velvet pads. His pattern may have been named for Richard Steiff, who invented Steiff’s legacy Teddy bears in the early 1900s. Treff is 6” tall and was made in the 1928-36 timeframe.

Auction News (Continued from page 10) Collectors might recognize this legacy pattern as a long-limbed Lulac rabbit - but not in this size! This petite prototype is most likely a miniature one-of-a-kind sample that never went into production. The early “muzzle” style bear is designed after circus bears that traveled from town to town across Europe during the last century. He is made from blond mohair, five ways jointed, and has its Steiff button. For more information, see Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion’s website at www.spielzeugauktion.de. - Rebekah Kaufman for Antique Doll Collector This 9.5” tall rabbit prototype with all IDs is most likely from the late 1950s to early 1960s.
Muzzle bear from around 1909 is 16.5” tall and retains his original leather-strapped facial covering.

Auction News (Continued from page 12) when assembling in large groups was not possible. The on-line auctions brought an expanded audience, from all over the country, and the prices are comparable to or higher than the live auction. In June of this year we held the first Live Auction event since 2019 – a reincarnation of our annual “Doll and Toy Extravaganza” held Diane, Eileen and dolls every summer to clean out the barn. The new approach consisted of all the non-pictured (good dolls with condition issues) and meaty “Box Lots” of dollrelated stuff. The auction, held under the tents at Withington’s Dollhouse in Hillsboro, was well-attended, with buyers from as far as Florida and Wisconsin and all over the Northeast. It was a beautiful day, in the ‘80s but with a refreshing breeze all day. The crowd was up-beat as they inspected the over 500 lots of better-than-average treasures in the sale. There was No Catalog, No Internet, No Phone bidding… just an old-fashioned Country Auction. To our surprise, prices were strong. This was a win-win – not only being together again but also having access to a plethora of quality doll stuff. So those who attended are waiting for the next Country Doll Extravaganza… So, what are we going to do? We have been scurrying around to find a new hotel capable of filling our wish list: We have made arrangements with the Double Tree by Hilton, just five miles from our old hotel in Nashua. Let’s see how it goes, then we have the off-season to regroup. Please see the calendar at right for new auction details!

THE DOLLS OF
Sasha Morgenthaler By Florence Theriault
During the 1950s the Sasha studio doll was most often presented with gypsum head and a distinctive textured cloth body which has jointing at the arms and hips. Various color of wigs and complexions appeared, as seen here. The facial models, shown, left to right, are I, I, and IV.
T
he mid-20thcentury doll-making path of Sasha Morgenthaler followed the historical lineage of others ranging from Izannah Walker to Martha Chase to Kathe Kruse. Whether the lives of these women had centered on tending to a busy household or raising basic funds for family survival, their “doll stories” usually began with a simple task: make a doll for their child, make a “real person” doll, a sturdy doll, a doll designed not just to look pretty, but to be a true companion. First attempts at dollmaking for all these women were simple, sometimes just a stuffed sock with stitched features. Yet their children loved the dolls. Their friends, too, loved the dolls, begging for their own. So the career as dollmaker began. 26

During the 1960s, the molded body was used for the Sasha studio dolls, as shown in the center doll in this photo. The color tint of the body could be one of 20 different shades and, when signature appears on the foot, the color tint is indicated. The facial models, shown left to right, are III, I and I.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sasha Morgenthaler was the last in the above-listed lineage of women dollmakers. Born in Berne, Switzerland in 1893 into an aristocratic and intellectual family, she early-on established a life-long interest in the arts, and specifically in sculpture, for which she was academically trained in the finest art schools. During her years of motherhood this interest manifested in the creation of toys for her children, first of stuffed toy animals with hand-painted features, and then of dolls which she began to create in 1924. In the chapter Endowed Dreams written by Annemarie Monteil (from the book, Sasha Dolls, edited by Steffan Biffiger), the author wrote “From the first, the dolls Sasha Morgenthaler designed and sewed for her children and godchildren were as perfect and individual as those of her entire future production”. By the 1940s, not unlike the earlier American dollmaker Martha Chase, Sasha gathered talented seamstresses and wigmakers to her small studio, where, under her watchful eye, they dressed and packaged the dolls she had so carefully modeled and painted. Each year at Christmas time, 200 dolls assembled in this studio were sent to Swiss Craft Centers in Zurich and Berne, where anxious shoppers lined up from the wee hours of the morning to be able to purchase even one doll.
Ink script marks can often be found on the left foot of the molded body Sasha studio dolls. This foot has the signature of Sasha at the toes, followed by M (initial code for the molder), 182/009 (the 182nd doll made in 1969), CI (type of body and type of face), and 19 (color tint of body). A variety of bodies used from 1940s onward show different sizes for each era and maker, as well as different styles and materials. The Sasha studio dolls are 20” as compared with the production Gotz dolls which are 16”.
Not only was Sasha Morgenthaler influenced by her fine art background, but also by her social activism. During the mid-1930s she studied midwifery at the Women’s Hospital in Basel, likely the inspiration for her very rare, realistically-weighted infant doll, Pro Juventate, which was designed as a teaching aid in courses on newborn care; similar teaching dolls had earlier been made by both Martha Chase and Kathe Kruse. During WWI era she was deeply involved in the children’s refugee centers in Switzerland which offered shelter to children from all over the war-torn world; and then, later in the 1950s, her worldwide travels furthered her fascination with the faces of children, as she introduced her “children of the whole world” series. Sasha Morgenthaler continued in the creation of her personal studio dolls until well into the 1960s. After the death of her husband, she was approached by the Gotz factory of Rodental, Germany, and under an agreement with that firm the first Sasha mass-produced dolls, marked “Sasha-Serie”, were made by them from 1965-1969. Commercial dolls also appeared from the Frido-Trendon Company of England, beginning in 1966 in an overlap with the Gotz production, but continuing much longer, until 1986. Throughout this time the private collection of Sasha Morgenthaler was preserved by the City of Zurich in the Barrengasse Museum which had been endowed with her artistic estate in 1976. That museum is now closed and searching for a new location.
ABOUT THE DOLLS
A frequently-heard comment about Sasha dolls from the uninitiated is that they all look alike. Oh no! That is actually far from the truth. Each of the studio dolls is hand-painted, and it is said that Sasha Morgenthaler waited until each doll was assembled, dressed and wigged, before she finally sat at the table, examined the essence of the doll, and 28

Sasha studio dolls most definitely do not all look alike. Each of these six dolls is facial model I, characterized by a squared jaw line with slightly full cheeks, wide lips and small nose. Yet through variation in complexion tones and wigs, shading of lips, and, most dramatically, size, shape and cast of eyes, different personalities are expressed. The brown eyes are especially rare.
The studio facial model II is round in shape and with full cheeks, small nose, and narrow mouth as shown here.
The studio facial model III is more oval in shape with a longer nose. It was this face that was also used later for most of the manufactured dolls, but whereas the studio model is 20”, the manufactured dolls are 16”.
The studio facial model IV is an unusual heart shape with beautifully curved chin, and has a smaller nose and dainty lips. ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

The first manufactured Sasha dolls were made by the Gotz firm of Germany from 1965-1970 only, and shown here are three examples. The dolls were marked “Sasha Serie” on head and torso.
Two examples of a rare production doll by Gotz are known by collectors as “no nose” in reference to their unusually small nose lending a petulant expression to the face. 30

began the final painting of the facial features, including choosing the color of the eyes. This style of painting was very deliberate. Whereas formula factory painting of a doll is usually symmetrical – the eyes perfectly paired and sized, for example – Sasha believed this was not reality. She followed an asymmetrical approach, in both the modeling and painting of her dolls, because she believed this most accurately mirrored real people. Thus, no two eyes were ever painted exactly alike, and arms and legs were never exactly the same length. Skin tones, too, varied; more than 20 different shades were used for the molding material of the body. Early studio dolls were made with one of four basic facial types, identified simply as I, II, III, and IV. The astute collector of early studio Sasha dolls distinguishes the facial type either by a learned eye, or by examining the bottom of the left foot. Furthermore, the left foot can contain a wealth of information about the doll including the color code of the complexion and such detail as that this is the 30th doll made in 1967. For collectors wishing to learn more about Sasha dolls, there are several excellent books, although most are out-of-print. More information, including connections with several clubs and special interest chat groups, can be found in a Sasha search of the internet. The dolls shown in this article are featured in detail in Theriault’s November 2021 auction catalog “Wish List” and are from one private collection.
Three Sasha-Serie dolls issued by Gotz of Germany during their 1965-1970 production era show variations in facial expression.
Over the years Sasha Morgenthaler and her assistant Trudi Loffler held courses at the Sasha studio for the women of Zurich and others wherein dolls were created under their supervision. These dolls are known as “course” dolls. The dolls, including the heads, are of a material similar to that of the original rough-textured cloth bodies, although the body style is different. The faces were painted by the students. ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

The

Have It
The Pink Ladies of Blampoix By Melanie Luther
M
y passion for French Fashion dolls had always focused on bisque ladies. The dolls of Jumeau, Gaultier, and Bru that graced my cabinet were characteristic of the decade following 1870. They shared the same artistically painted, flesh-colored, matte bisque shoulder head. I was very comfortable with my narrow focus - until I discovered Charlotte and added her to my fashion doll collection. Charlotte is a pink glazed porcelain shoulder head, ca. 1858, and attributed to Claude Joseph Blampoix. An early figure in doll making, Blampoix is lesser-known than Huret or Rohmer, but nonetheless significant in French Fashion doll history. This innovative entrepreneur patented the insertion of enamel eyes into fashion doll shoulder heads in the mid-1850s. On March 15, 1855, Claude Joseph Blampoix filed patent #22792 - for affixing glass or enamel eyes into porcelain doll heads; the heads themselves fitted with porcelain shoulder plates. This was something that had never been done thus far. The patent also stipulated the design for fixed and moving eyes. This patented process led Claude Joseph to significant financial success. Consequently, during the following two years, he moved to 98 Rue Montorgueil where he expanded his business to include several workshops that he converted from apartments. Here he assembled dolls of his own design, incorporating the insertion of lifelike enamel eyes into the shoulder heads.

The enamel eyes for which Blampoix is known were usually made from silicon, sand, a mixture of potassium and soda, plus metallic oxides. These elements created an opaque vitrified material that could be colored and applied with heat to various products: in this case, eyes for porcelain doll heads. Originally, the general manufacturers of eyes for the blind supplied doll companies. Eventually manufacturers, such as Guepratte, began specializing in making (enamel) eyes specifically for dolls. It should be noted that, as early as 1779, an advertisement by Dantonet identified enamel eyes in dolls; but it was the formal, legal patent that gave Blampoix the right to “the affixing of the enamel eyes.”

To create these miniature opticals, an eye-maker needed a steady hand and extremely fine vision. The workforce was usually composed of young women who possessed these characteristics. Apprentices often studied for a year before they produced a saleable product. Regardless of how experienced the worker became, it was still nearly impossible to fabricate a perfect matching pair of eyes. Despite sorting carefully to identify the best
possible matches, workers still found that some eyes showed tiny cracks - most likely occurring during the heating and cooling process. Many of these eyes were still deemed satisfactory due to the artistry involved in their creation. It is not unheard of to discover that some collectors assumed that these somewhat “mismatched” eyes were not original, and replaced them, overlooking their authentic value to the doll.

Some mystery exists regarding the markings of the dolls of Claude Joseph Blampoix. Keeping in mind that dolls were produced as playthings, and were frequently unmarked, this presents an ongoing challenge for today’s collectors. Other questions arise concerning the specific markings “B.S.” Some collectors believe these
markings translate to “Blampoix Senior”- identifying Claude Joseph Blampoix as the “Elder” of the family business. The mystery surrounding the “S” stems from the understanding that the word for “Senior” in French is “Aine,” also translated as “Elder.” Proponents of this argument question the marking of the “S” and suggest that either the Claude Joseph Blampoix mark should be “B.A.” using the French “Aine” which translates as “Blampoix Elder” or that possibly another doll maker, Benoist Schneider, may have produced those dolls marked “B.S.” Further research and study will generate more insight into these speculations.

Blampoix had a vision for his dolls and his business. His early doll production bolstered the glazed porcelain head production and popularity despite the later addition of colored bisques. Could the rosy, glazed porcelain head dolls, like Charlotte, be Blampoix’s bridge from glazed china to colored bisque? Were his “Pink Ladies,” known for their rosy china glow, a further attempt at creating a more natural, life-like appearance for his dolls? Certainly, the affixing of enamel eyes was his first step in this direction. I invite you to view this photo journal of Charlotte and many other examples of Blampoix’s beautiful French Fashion dolls made of rose glazed china. Perhaps you, too, will step into the world of the Pink Ladies of Blampoix, and find a new collecting genre to study and enjoy.

Bébé Tout en Bois A Search for Answers By Margo Delaughter
T
he dolls of Albert Schoenhut were my dolls of choice early in my doll collecting history. These all-wood dolls with character faces and multiple jointing fascinated me, and I soon became an avid collector. As my doll cases became filled with Schoenhuts and my research on their origin satisfied, I began looking at other such dolls. I soon discovered an all-wood doll known as Bébé Tout en Bois which translates as Baby All in Wood. It wasn’t long before I acquired two of these dolls and wanted answers about their origins. Who made them? Where were they made, and when? Their name is French, but it was not clear that they were made in France. The hunt for answers was on! My research into the origin of the dolls referred to as Bébé Tout en Bois had been far from satisfying. This is not surprising since there is very little information on these dolls. It would seem that when looking for these dolls, one would expect to find a doll exactly as the term states – all wood. This has not been the case, however. My research found many variations

with no clear explanation. Were the first dolls all wood, and then other companies picked up the term and produced their variations? Can we be sure that all the dolls labeled Bébé Tout en Bois are correctly identified? My search for answers was interesting but also frustrating! Most of us envision the dolls of companies like Bru, Jumeau, or Steiner when we hear the French term Bébé. However, Bébé Tout en Bois bears no resemblance to the artistry This close-up of the boy shows his wispy painted hair, glass eyes, dimpled chin, and the wood grain texture of his face. of these French firms. In fact, some of these dolls have a stare that is scary rather than appealing, in my opinion. It was the body construction, and definitely not the face, that led me to admire these dolls. The first one I saw was a large boy, and I liked the way the knee joint was not exposed on the front of the leg as it is on many ball-jointed dolls. He was a large and robust fellow with delightful little-boy feet. I didn’t purchase that boy but did find another like him and added him to my collection. A girl soon followed. As my interest in these dolls grew, I discovered that not all the dolls shared the same body construction as the ones I first admired. Despite their French name, the dolls were produced in Sonneberg, Thuringia, an area of Germany that was very active in doll and toy production. The town of Sonneberg This back view produced more dolls and toys than any other town in the of the boy’s leg shows the world at that time. Since they were for the French market, they were given a French name. Various doll companies, such as Rudolf Schneider, F. M. Schilling, and Loffler & Dill, were active in their production. I found a reference indicating that some were made in France, but I have not been able to verify the information. It was not until approximately 1914 that Rudolf Schneider registered the trademark Bébé Tout en Bois and Entierement Articule for articulated wood dolls. His mark was stamped on The boy’s big “little boy” feet are detailed.

the doll’s chemise. The F. M. Schilling company marked their dolls with a paper label that read Tout en Bois, Holz, Germany all wood, angel symbol, Fabrikmarke deponirt. Some Schilling dolls are unmarked, but can be identified by their curled thumbs and first fingers that form the letter “C.” The dolls vary in their body construction and seem to have only one common characteristic, the wooden hollow head. The majority have a wooden body, but I did find one described as a Tout en Bois with a Taufling body. The wood used was mainly linden wood, also known as basswood. The sizes I’ve found range from 9 inches to 24 inches. Girls were mainly wigged, but I did find one girl with carved hair. The boys all appear to have painted hair. Mouths were either open, showing teeth, or closed. The finish on the girl dolls is matte, while the boys’ finish is shiny. Eyes were with or without pupils, and the jointed bodies showed different types of jointing. Some dolls were jointed at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and knees. Others were jointed at the neck, shoulders, and hips only. One doll even seemed to have a waist joint. Confusing? Most certainly. Are some of these dolls “put-togethers,” or were they constructed this way by the various companies? Did the dolls evolve from fully articulated all-wood to 40

other materials and construction, but kept the original name because the dolls sold well? As mentioned earlier, records of these dolls are scarce, so the little that is known is from observations of the existing dolls. My Tout en Bois boy has been re-dressed in a navy blue knitted sailor suit trimmed in red and white. He is 22 inches tall and has the shiny finish typical of the painted-hair boy dolls. His short blond hair is painted with wispy strokes, and his single-stroke eyebrows are thick. His blue glass eyes have a pupil and are set. His upper and lower lashes are not as exaggerated as they are on some of the girls. He has chubby cheeks, a small nose with red nostril dots, and a dimple in his chin. His red mouth is small and painted with a cupid’s bow. He is jointed at the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Since I love his "little-boy" big feet, I have left him shoeless. His arms and legs are two pieces with a half ball-like section cut out on the back of each. This ball-like section does not show on the front of the leg when the doll is standing, but of course, it allows the leg to bend when the doll sits. He has no markings, but his thumb and first finger form the letter “C,” so I’m assuming he was made by the F. M. Schilling Company.

My girl in the red and white striped dress is 24 inches tall. She has a blonde mohair wig, and her finish is matte as opposed to shiny like the boy. Her light blue, set eyes have a pupil and stare straight ahead. She has thin single-stroke light brown eyebrows, and her upper and lower lashes are more pronounced than the boy’s. Her long nose is thin with red nostril dots. Her red lips are pursed and have been painted with a definite cupid’s bow. Her jointing is identical to the boy, except she has been given a wrist joint. Her thumb and first finger also form the letter “C.” She has a rather formidable or scary expression with those staring eyes, thin nose, and pinched lips! The little girl in her original white gauze chemise with red trim is 9 inches tall. Her chemise is stamped in red Bébé Tout en Bois on the lower right hemline. She was made by Rudolf Schneider, circa 1920. She has a blonde mohair wig, black pupil-less glass eyes, and a flange neck. Her arms are bent, and her hands are spoon-shaped with separate thumbs. Her torso is V-shaped, and she has long, thin legs. She is jointed at the neck, shoulders, and hips. The Bébé Tout en Bois baby is 11 inches tall. She has a blonde mohair wig, brown glass eyes, an open mouth with teeth, and a ball-jointed body. Baby is in her original presentation cotton pique swaddling blanket trimmed with lace and blue and white satin ribbon. She wears a cotton nightdress with a matching bib and cap. The overall presentation is 15 inches long. Other examples are shown in the illustrations. I don’t have a lot of descriptive information on them, except that one girl is in a Volendam costume and the Japanese Taufling-style baby is 13-1/4 inches tall. This doll perplexes me as, it certainly isn’t all wood. Should it be included with the Tout en Bois dolls? The illustration with the four dolls shows a variety of facial expressions. Three of the dolls are wigged and wear girls’ clothing, while the fourth has painted hair indicative that he is the lone male in the group. The girl on the far left has the red stamp Tout en Bois on the lower hemline of her chemise. The dolls were advertised in various French magazines. Several of those An 11” baby in her original swaddling blanket. advertisements are shown in this article, along with the doll’s price and a The whole presentation is 15” long. (Elizabeth brief description. We are able to see how the dolls were dressed, but the Ann Coleman Collection) companies making the dolls are not named.
These four Tout en Bois dolls show a variety of faces and body types. Dolls are from the late Dr. Gladys Doelman and Gladys Kinsley Collections. 42

For most collectors, these dolls would not receive even a second glance, but they were produced and bought for children who I believe cherished them. Here was not the bisque-headed “Sunday Doll” that was given to the child to hold carefully, lest it be dropped and the head forever broken. This doll’s strong wooden head and body would not shatter or crack if dropped. Also, she was most likely less expensive than her bisque-head sisters. What more could a child ask for in their doll? Was my search for answers on Bébé Tout en Bois complete? Hardly. It shows that more research is needed on these dolls. Perhaps readers and other collectors have more to reveal.
