Auction News A Cub of Titanic Proportions: Steiff’s Original 1912 Black Mohair Titanic Mourning Bears By Rebekah Kaufman If you were to ask vintage Steiff or Teddy enthusiasts what tops their wish lists, many would say a Steiff 1912 black mohair “Titanic Mourning” bear. These extraordinary cubs are famous for their looks, rarity, and place in history and always grab the collecting world’s attention when they come up for sale—once in a blue moon. In July 2023, arguably the finest example extant headlined Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion GmbH’s Special Steiff Auction held in Giengen, Germany. This bear was owned by Susan Kilgore Wiley (1941-2022) of Raleigh, North Carolina and was named Othello. Othello was the pride and joy of her extensive vintage Steiff collection. As a result of this auction, Othello would go on to win hearts, headlines, and a new world’s record for the most expensive antique Teddy bear ever sold at auction. Here is the story behind this amazing treasure and family heirloom, and what made him exceptional from so many perspectives. Othello, who was “born” in 1912, was the complete package. He was uniquely handsome, was in all original condition, and had an irresistible personality. He measured 50 cm tall standing, was five ways jointed, and solidly stuffed with wood wool. He was made from pitch black mohair and had tan felt paw pads. He came to life with black wooden shoe button eyes backed in red felt circles, a hand embroidered black nose and mouth, black embroidered claws, a center seam head construction, and a lightly shaved muzzle. He was in outstanding condition with extremely minor age related losses and a possible, tiny professional repair to one of his felt footpads. He retained his small trailing “f” button as his Steiff ID. Mrs. Wiley adored Othello before actually laying eyes on him in person, and knew that she had to have him as part of her hug. She travelled to London from the United States with her sister Mimi to attend an auction at Sotheby’s on May 18th, 1990 where this bear was on offer. According to the Wiley family, Mrs. Wiley was determined to get Othello at whatever cost. She ended up winning a bidding war with a phone bidder, got him for around $40,000, and set a Sotheby’s sales record at the time. After paying for and collecting him, Mrs. Wiley brought Othello to her London hotel room. That night, there was a fire alarm, and all the guests had to leave the building. Of course, Mrs. Wiley had Othello securely under her arm as she made her escape. This was one of Mrs. Wiley’s favorite collecting stories of all time. In the broadest sense, there are two main conventional reasons why Steiff’s black mohair “Titanic Mourning” bears

are so desirable amongst collectors. They are history and rarity. In terms of history, these “crying” cubs are tied to one of the most significant worldwide, and still relevant events of the 20th century, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. When the Titanic disaster struck, nearly everyone in England was personally touched by this event, or had a family member or colleague who was. The whole country was in shock, much like America was after the 9/11 disaster. In response, Steiff produced a handful of all black mohair bears with red felt behind their eyes—to indicate sadness and crying—for the English market. And in

terms of rarity, so few examples were made, and so few remain today, that the demand for them so completely overwhelms the supply. As usual, everyone wants what is just out of reach. Although numbers vary a bit from reference to reference, it is best estimated that Steiff produced no more than 600-700 of these all-black mohair bears with red felt backed eyes in total overall. But Mrs. Wiley’s Titanic bear had two additional, unexpected features which really added an additional degree of magnitude to its appeal—and price tag. The first one was simply coincidence. This Titanic bear went up for sale when the world’s attention was again focused on the Titanic. Here we speak of the Titanic Submersible Expedition explosion disaster in June 2023, which cost five lives. The second had to do with a very subtle design detail. Mrs. Wiley’s bear featured the company’s coveted and extremely rare “center seam” facial construction. In the early 1900s, every seventh bear that Steiff made had a seam down the center of its face to make the most efficient use of the mohair fabric used to create them. The dimensions of the fabric supplied at the time were such that the Steiff could manufacture six full heads from it, but there always was some remaining material from this cutting process. As such, Steiff found a way to “patch” these leftovers into another head and therefore not waste any fabric. Othello was the first center seamed black mohair Titanic Mourning bear in memory—perhaps even ever—to come to public auction, as far as anyone could tell. Only a handful of Steiff black mohair Titanic bears have come up for sale this century. Most have realized in the c. $20,00040,000 range. When Othello and his auction were publicized, and became the talk of the collecting community, many in the know
thought he may break the six-figure mark. However, this oncein-a-lifetime example would go on to hammer at 180,000 euro or $202,020, and realize $250,505. The most expensive antique Teddy bear to trade hands to date, according to online sources, was a Steiff bear owned by Colonel Bob Henderson named Teddy Girl. She was sold in London by Christie’s for £110,000 or $171,600 on December 5th, 1994. However, Mrs. Wiley’s Teddy bear sold for over a quarter million dollars—breaking this previous high mark by over $78,000. During this premier sale, I had not only Othello to sell, but many other fine Steiff items that could also trade hands at six figures. Othello was lot #82, and when it was finally time to sell him, I started to get some palpitations. I knew that five phone bidders would be competing for him, but I also knew that some bidders were also live in the room. “Our auction house expected that Othello may hammer for about 80,000 to 100,000 euros. But the bidding quickly escalated. When he hit 100,000 euro I realized history was in the making. I was completely fixated on the telephone bids that I almost overlooked the final bid, which came from the floor. What a surprise that was! When the bidding was finally over, I was overcome with joy. I was so proud of the results, our company, and our team who made everything possible.” And finally, can you imagine what it would feel like to personally watch a treasured family heirloom being auctioned off in front of an eager and excited worldwide audience? owards the end of the 19th century a new movement in dollmaking was beginning to take shape. This movement was fueled by a societal attitude shift in reaction to an increasingly mechanized and urbanized world. Artists, parents, and doll makers began to conceive of and create dolls with a more natural appearance and relatable body styles. One of the key players in this emerging arena was Käthe Kruse of Germany. Käthe was an unconventional and forward-thinking woman. Born Katharina Simon in Breslau, Germany she decided at the age of sixteen to become an actress. Taking the stage name Hedda Somin she did just that and by the age of seventeen she was earning her living in the theater. This brought her into contact with other artists and non-conventional philosophies. In 1901, she fell in love with the famous sculptor Max Kruse, 28 years her senior. Even the event of the birth of their first child did not persuade Käthe to marry. Instead, the couple enjoyed a partnership based on their affection for each other and an appreciation for art. Only after their fourth child, a son named Johannes, was stillborn did she change her mind and consent to marry.

The more usual Doll model I is a 16 inch (40.5 cm) doll whose design was modeled after the Fiamingo bust, depicts a healthy child of two or three. Its body is designed with very wide hips which are disc jointed. After 1930 this doll was restyled to meet the modern impression of a healthy child with more slender hips and a slightly taller stance (17 inches). The complicated body pattern for Doll I has seven pieces for the torso, five for the legs, two for the arms and separately applied thumbs. Early doll bodies were excelsior stuffed, but soon after Kruse began using deer or reindeer hair as stuffing. Frau Kruse started her now world-renowned doll company in response to her desire to provide her own small daughter with suitable playthings. Her first attempt at dollmaking arose when she asked Max to purchase a doll for their daughter Mimerle who wanted a baby of her own to care for the way that mother cared for her new baby daughter, Fifi. He responded by telling her that the porcelain dolls available seemed much too stiff, cold, and breakable for a three-year-old and that she should make a doll instead. Such was the conception of “the potato doll.” This creation was made from a towel which Käthe filled with sand and knotted at the corners to produce arms and legs. At the top she inserted a potato for the head and drew on the features
with a burnt match. Although quite different from the artful dolls for which she would later be known, this doll was an instant hit with little Mimerle who especially enjoyed the life-like weight and floppiness of the doll. Over the next several years Kruse would have many opportunities to experiment with refinements in her dollmaking as each of her creations was worn out from play by her growing family. She tried using plaster casts for the heads and muslin for the bodies; she tried using sawdust for the stuffing; she tried working with wax to reinforce the cloth faces. She acquired a bust of a child’s head by the artist Fiamingo and used it for a model for her doll heads. Each doll became a little bit better than the ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

In 1912 Kruse opened a factory on the Frierichestraβe in the town of Bad Kösen. In 1915 a wire skeleton was developed for use in little soldier dolls made by the company. Towards the end of World War I and into the first half of the 1920s this armature was used in a line of dollhouse dolls such as the 6.5 inch example seen here. one before it although she struggled with getting the noses right. In 1910 Käthe moved her growing family from Oberwaid, Ascona, Switzerland to Neukirchen, Germany and eventually to Berlin where they took an apartment in a building which housed other artists. Word of Käthe’s experiments in dollmaking started to get around in artistic circles. The Herman Tietz Department store asked her to contribute items to their 1910 exhibition called “Homemade Toys.” Determined to show her very best work Käthe enlisted the help of her husband to finally get the noses done in a manner that pleased her, and the resulting dolls were displayed. The response of the public was overwhelmingly in favor of these new dolls. Many newspaper articles highly praised 22

Doll II called “Schlenkerchen” (Little Floppy Doll) was 13 inches tall and was made from 1922 into the 1930s. It is the only Käthe Kruse doll to have a smile. It has an open-closed mouth. Favorites with this author are the models V and VI which are essentially the same doll. Weighted versions of these dolls were designed in 1925 to be used as a training aid for young girls. Träumerchen” was a sleeping baby with closed eyes and “Du Mein” was an awake baby with open eyes. Unweighted versions were sold as playthings. From 1930 on “Du Mein” was sold with a wig. After 1935 a heavy moldable material called magnesit was used for the heads of these dolls instead of the molded cloth heads previously seen. By 1966 plastic materials were being used for the heads. Doll VII was a smaller doll measuring 13.75 inches. One version was a smaller copy of “Du Mein” which came with painted hair in 1927 and 1928 and a wig from 1929 until it was discontinued in the early 1930s. The other version was a smaller copy of Doll I and came with painted hair (a wigged version could be special ordered). them for their washability, unbreakable nature and for the naturalness of their proportioning and appearance. Soon many mothers were coming to the studio to request dolls for their own children. The large doll manufacturers who were taking note of this new trend in doll design were intrigued with this public response but were reticent to accept changes to their established production practices. When they saw that the dolls had painted eyes and hair rather than the usual glass eyes and wigs in general use at that time they were dismayed. Kruse was smart enough to realize that if she did not start producing her dolls for the public someone else would steal her ideas so, she had her designs copyrighted and entered into negotiations with the doll producing factory of Kämmer and Reinhardt. The factory bought the rights to produce her dolls and sent their representatives to her workshop to learn how to make them. The company could not accept the concept of the doll’s stationary heads and simple joints at the shoulders and hips and insisted on adding ball-joints to the dolls. But ever true to her own vision Käthe did not accept these changes to her designs which she felt looked too unnatural. Within three months ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

Doll VIII “Das Deutsche Kind” (the German Child) first came out in 1929 and measures 20.5 inches. Modeled after Käthe’s son Friedebald by sculptor Igor van Jakimow, this was the first Kruse doll to have a swivel head. During World War II the name “the German Child” was looked on with disfavor, but Käthe held onto it stating quite simply that she was using the name long before the Third Reich existed. Model IX was a smaller version of this doll and was introduced in 1929. Many other models would come along as the century progressed.
In 1945 Bad Kösen was occupied by the Soviet Union. Kruse’s children had always been involved in the business in one way or another and now two of her sons, Michel and Max, moved production to the west opening factories in Bad Pyrmont and Donauwörth. In 1950 The Soviet state took over the factory in Bad Kösen, and Käthe moved to the west and centered her business in Donauwörth. the contract was broken with Käthe returning the advance she had been paid and Kämmer and Reinhardt returning her copyrights. Kruse was feeling unsure of what to do next when she received a large order for her dolls from the American toy specialty store—FAO Schwarz. This prompted her to start commercial production of her dolls herself. With five women to help her with the sewing and stuffing and an artist named Beyer to help with the painting she turned her apartment into a workshop. Soon this order led to more and she found it necessary to rent workshop space in Bad Kösen and eventually in 1927 to buy an old school to become her factory. By 1939 she employed 120 people and was producing approximately 12,000 dolls a year. After World War II, two of her sons moved from Soviet-occupied Bad Kösen to Donauwörth, West Germany and for many years divisions of the company were run from both locations. In 1950 Käthe Kruse moved to the west herself, and the company consolidated in Donauwörth. 24

In 1958, succeeding her brothers, Hanne Kruse took over the running of the factory bringing out new designs. One of her first designs was for Däumlinchen, which had a molded head on a body made from with a foam backed foil covered with stockinette.
Käthe’s feelings toward her dolls and their success are best expressed in an interview with her that was printed in the November 1912 issue of the Ladies’ Home Journal. She states “Each doll goes through my hands at least twenty times. I think this is the secret of their success: not the technical solution - a man might have discovered that - but to create a baby, an innocent, sweet, foolish little thing! - this was only possible for a woman, a mother, who several times has held in her arms a loving, heavenly doll.” Although Käthe Kruse died in 1968 her philosophy of bringing nature and nurture into the nursery would remain a guidepost throughout the history of the company she founded and the dolls created by Käthe, and her successors continue to reach the hearts of children and collectors more than a century later, ensuring Käthe’s place as an innovator in the story of dollmaking.
The company would go on to continue to evolve, with changes of ownership, making dolls with heads of celluloid, hard plastic, wood, and vinyl, as well as cloth. The company brought out lines of baby toys, did reissues of earlier dolls for the collector market and moved into modern vinyl play dolls such as the model shown here. Ozark Nut Head Dolls:

unt Poodie, Arkansas Joan and Grandma Snazzy are unique names of some nut head dolls made by Ozark doll makers. People of the southern highlands and the Ozark region used a variety of nuts including hickory, walnut, chestnut, buckeye, pecan, hazelnut, cashew, and peach pit to create their character dolls. Located in southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas, and northeast Oklahoma, the Ozark region is vast and rich in its own culture. Music, dance, living close to the land, and important economic resources are all part of the area. One noted doll maker was Itura Rosalein Colley Leigh from Grantville, Georgia. She started making her dolls in 1924 creating dolls representing those people with whom she was familiar. She continued to make dolls into the mid-1950s through her business, Loveleigh Novelty Dolls. Old Black Joe, the Cotton Picker, is one and retains a partial label on his right foot. He continues to display his worth despite the hard labor his people endured.

Ben and Ethel Smith of Fayetteville / Springdale, Arkansas created a diorama in the 1930s, now owned by the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale, Arkansas. The “Hillbilly Wedding” attendees stand as the minister officiates the ceremony. Each figure is on a base, neatly dressed, barefoot and framed by a cardboard box. The diorama was purchased from Hilda Geuther who owned the Mini Museum located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Despite the stereotype dolls, the staunch and conservative Ozark rural folks of the 1940s were individuals who expressed their humor and creativity in other types of nut head dolls. Some character dolls were very well made. Their clothes were finely tailored. Names enhanced their personalities. One such lady is Aunt Poodie. The nine-inch doll is based on a character on a radio show, “The Arkansas Traveler,” that aired from 1941 to 1947 hosted by Bob Burns (1890-1956). Aunt Poodie’s creator was Vina Stayton Smith who lived near Bob Burns. At first, she sold the dolls at a roadside stand, but her dolls became so popular with tourists that orders soon required Vina to hire help. Aunt Poodie’s body is made of scrap wood from fruit or glass crates. Her hands are carved wood. Her black painted flat wooden feet allow her to stand on her own. Her humble structure is hidden by a well-tailored dress. She is a refined woman with a proud stance and rather haughty facial expression. A black pill box style hat with netting graces her head, her hair is beautifully styled and her delicate pink parasol clings to her right hand. ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

One comical lady doll was named Aunt of Bob Burns as identified on the bottom of her base. She is a stump doll and is 6 inches tall. It is unknown if Vina made her or if Bob enjoyed a good laugh when he first saw her. Arkansas Joan is a 9-inch, corn cob pipe smoking lady dressed in a red print dress, red and white striped pantaloons and a broad brimmed bonnet. A long blonde braid trails down her back tied with a red ribbon. She stands erect on black painted flat wooden feet. She retains her paper tag pinned to her dress. Arkansas Traveler is a 9-inch white haired man dressed in overalls and carries a small red cloth bundle. Perhaps it contains his meager belongings or a few food items. He has side glancing eyes, and a pipe in his mouth. He wears a black felt hat. He retains his label and stands on strong wooden dowel legs and black painted flat wooden feet. 28

Aunt Boo holds a special place for me. She stands 9 inches tall. Her wooden torso is the same as Aunt Poodie, but her wire legs have cloth feet in sewn-on black shoes. Side glancing eyes and smile give her a kind expression. She wears a floral print dress, red bloomers, white half-slip, red bonnet and red apron. Attached to her carved wooden hand is a dried seed pod basket containing two face painted seed heads with hair. Pinned to her dress is a paper tag clearly identifying her as, “Aunt Boo, The Doll Maker, An Ozark Doll.”

Grandma Snazzy is 7 inches seated in a wellmade wooden rocker. She busies herself with her knitting. She too has wire legs and sports the same knit stockings and footwear as Aunt Boo. Grandma’s walnut head has a white wig and a gentle expression. She wears a black and brown print dress, full organdy apron and, a lace trimmed bonnet. Beneath are her bright red cotton pantaloons and white half-slip. No label accompanies her, but similar dolls with a label were sold at the Rag Doll Craft Shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina. This Grandma continues to rock and knit with an honored place among her other nut head character dolls. Although not of the Ozarks, Johnny Appleseed could be a distant cousin. I can only imagine his creator must have been inspired by Ozark nut head doll makers. His head is a hickory nut. His facial features are hand painted with a white beard framing his face. His blue eyes and smiling mouth denote a gentle character and kind soul. Plain brown cloth are his clothes with a leather belt. His cooking pot is made of clay and worn as a hat. His pipe cleaner body is cloth covered. His feet are bare. Over his shoulder is a sack containing apple seeds. In his arms is his ever-present Bible. Many tourist trade dolls are created commercially and cheaply made. These Ozark dolls, also, were created for tourists, but they were made with care and with an eye for detail. They reveal craftsmanship by folks with artistic skills mixed with unique personality and charm. “Here Comes the Bride…” By Laurie Baker hen I was a young girl, having a bride doll was the Holy Grail. I was nine years old when my Aunt Helen dressed my Revlon doll as a bride. My aunt was a gifted couturier and sewed gowns for ladies, so she had no trouble with a miniature wedding dress. It was magical. I could not take my eyes off that doll. Her brocade gown had diagonal lace and tulle on the skirt, sprigged with silk lilies of the valley. Pearls were sewn at the neck and scattered on the skirt. Her gossamer veil was held in place by a floral headpiece to match. She had pearl earrings and necklace, high heels and stockings. She was beautiful. All that was lacking was the groom. Somehow, he was never missed… Though that was many decades ago, I am still thrilled with my French fashion doll brides, and their bridal accessories. Recently, I purchased a very fine, antique miniature, Victorian-styled bridal gown. When it arrived, I knew I would share it with Antique DOLL Collector readers. Expertly crafted, the fabric is ivory silk satin, with hundreds of sewn-on pearls, beadwork, delicate laces and trims. The bodice is intricately pieced. Boning on the inside is sewn securely with feather stitching, negating the bride’s need for “underpinings.” 32

Exaggerated leg-o-mutton sleeves, formed with generous cartridge pleating at the shoulder, end in narrow cuffs with pearl trim and tiny beadwork. In contrast to the detailed bodice, the gored skirt is simple, but with a spectacularly long train. Wide and scalloped at the hemline, it has lace-trimmed, stiffened pleating on the inner hem. This is the “dust ruffle,” which protects the skirt and train from dirt.

After examining the gown closely, I was convinced it had to have been created for one of two reasons: as a miniature replica of a bride’s actual gown, as a keepsake of the occasion, which was common practice for French brides, or as a miniature, sample gown, made by a couturier. Using this mock-up, the bride could see the style and detailing, and suggest alterations and revisions. I feel the gown is much too sophisticated in design, detail, and execution to have been made for a doll. I could be wrong. It would not be the first time. Sadly, the original pearl trim loosened, and many pearls were lost. I was able to find 4 mm vintage, faux pearls, as replacements. Other than that, it was in remarkable shape for its age. The lining of the skirt and bodice prevented splitting of the silk. Because of the sleeve style, popular in the 1890s, I feel the gown is about 130 years old. Surely, it had been stored carefully away, and seldom, if ever, taken out again. I consider it to be a true work of art. However, because the style is high Victorian, none of the French fashion dolls could wear it, though they tolerate it on a dress form, nearby. Who does not love a bride? There are so many accessories and fun little whimsies for antique bride dolls. A pair of “Old Paris” vases would be on the altar at a French wedding, filled with flowers. After the ceremony, the vases would be cherished through the years, holding a place of honor in the home. They were produced in miniature, for dolls, and can be found online, on Barrois bride a lucky day. Recently, I found wax flowers that had been part of a framed wedding commemorative, behind convex glass. How fortunate. Antique wax flowers are generally covered in dust and dirt and are very difficult to restore. Because of the protective glass, these were aged—fragile, but not soiled. Their color complements antique fabrics and laces. They arrived from France, carefully wrapped, thanks to thechateauofchic shop on Etsy. I would use them for bouquets and coronets. Orange blossoms are symbols of good luck, good health, and fertility. No wonder they are a requisite for a variety of bridal accessories— bouquets, headpieces, sewn onto gowns, in wedding vases or tussy-mussies, or nestled in display boxes. 34

The fortunate French bride would keep her precious mementos under a wedding globe, or globe de mariage. A velvet cushion, tufted with ormolu rosettes, would hold the wedding coronet. An elaborate ormolu frame would fill the globe, each element representing good wishes, or predictions for the couple’s future. My favorite, common to most wedding globes, is a bird in flight, holding a laurel wreath in its bill. As a bird builds its nest for its family, so will the bride make a home for hers.

Wouldn’t it be fun if the dolls had their own globe de mariage? I researched the various elements I would need to make one. The process proved to be daunting. Happily, a friend sent a photograph of her miniature, artist-made globe. The resourceful Carmel Doll Shop Boutique had these for purchase. Other bridal accessories include bridal-themed display boxes, with a wedding garter inside, a pair or two of fancy gloves, a silk-and-lace parasol, a fine mother-ofpearl fan, hair comb with pearls to match the bride’s earrings, a lace-trimmed hanky, tussy-mussy, perfume bottles and toiletries for her vanity, a vinaigrette or two for travel, and more.

Each mirror, fastened onto the ormolu frame, amid flowers and leaves, had meaning. The largest, central mirror reflected a truthful and honest soul. Rectangular mirrors referred to the amount of time between the bridal pair’s meeting and their marriage. Ovals were bridesmaids’ offerings of good luck. The number of children the couple wished for would be reflected in small rhombus mirrors.

There are two French fashion dolls, dressed as brides, in the doll room. They are dressed in two entirely different styles, though both have traditional elements— white or ivory gown, wax flowers, headpiece with veil, bouquet, and lavish use of laces and trims. The Bru-type Barrois bride carries a rosary and wears a fitted silk-satin gown with train, and ruched hemline. In contrast, the earlier Barrois bride’s gown is a frothy confection with very full skirt, train, floral springs, ruffles and trims. She carries a small parfum and her bouquet. Just as with brides today, no two would consider dressing alike on their special day.

BOWS, BOWS & MORE BOWS by Margo Delaughter ntique shops have always been of special interest to me. When I enter through the doors I'm enchanted. I find it captivating to look into not only the past of recent generations, but also to see the objects that were in style years before I was even born. Of course, my main hunt is for dolls, but I am also intrigued with photos of people. Children in particular cause me to smile. Which brings me to the topic of this lighthearted
article about dolls with bows. So many photos of little girls show enormous bows perched on the top of their heads as well as bows of a more conventional size. Doll makers copied the prevailing styles of the time and included bows on their dolls too. Examples of photos of girls with bows on their heads are shown in illustrations 1, 2 and 3. Six children are shown in the first photo. The bows on the 3 girls in the back row are very large. They seem very proud of them The second photo is a studio portrait of a family of three. The girls on the left and right of the younger child have on their finest clothing complete with bows in their hair. The youngest child, a little girl as well, does not have a bow in her baby fine hair. The third photo is also of three sibling also posed in their best clothing. child on the right is definitely a girl. Her bow is perched on the top of her head. Recently a friend was viewing my doll collection and remarked about the number of dolls I had with bows.”No I don't,” I thought to myself, but when I seriously took a good look at my collection I changed my mind. I did indeed have a fair amount of dolls with bows. Some were added by previous owners, some were factory original and others were molded or painted by the maker. I decided this article would concentrate on the molded and painted bows which of course did not depend on the whimsy of a past owner or a guess on my part as to the originality. Many different companies used bows in the construction of their dolls and these bows are part of the doll itself. Two of my dolls wear hats with bows. Illustration 4 shows a 51⁄2" all bisque girl with a molded hat and clothes. Her darling blue hat sports a pink ribbon with bow. She is unmarked, but believed to be made in Germany. Her companion is also unmarked, but probably German made. She is a googlie type and stands at 61⁄2" tall. Her orange cloche hat has a painted black bow on the front.

The company of Goebel made the 61⁄2" all original googlie shown in illustration 5. She wears a blue headband with a single blue bow on one side of her head. Her pert expression is priceless. Her googly eyes are looking to the left. Her head is bisque and her body composition. Not all bows are worn in the conventional method as evidenced by the 8" doll in illustration 6. Her bow is worn upside down! She seems quite happy with her upside down bow. She is a Gebruder Heubach type doll. She is unmarked, but closely resembles the Heubach dolls. Her head is bisque and her body composition. It's amazing that the ends of the bows have survived through out her life. Two babies made by Recknagel are shown in illustrations 7 and 8. Both have bisque heads and bent leg composition baby bodies. The doll in illustration 8 is a bonnet baby. His white bonnet is decorated with 3 blue bows – one at the top and one on each side of his head. He is 9" tall and is marked R.A. 22.12/o. I have him posed with an art print of an early folk art painting of a young boy. How do I know this child in the frilly bonnet is a boy? Note the horse and whip which are toys associated with young boys. If it was a picture of a girl she would perhaps have flowers or basket, but not a horse and whip. The other baby (illustration 8) is surprised by something she sees. She is 8" and marked R50A (over) 10 ⁄ 0. She has 2 tiny bows are on either side of her painted hair. I wonder just what she sees? Bows made in the style of flowers are on the headband worn by the 12" girl often referred to as coquette. Her head was most probably made by Gebruder Heubach for the Revalo company. Illustration 9 shows this bisque headed doll with composition body. Here again we see bows of a different design. Her bows are more of a rosette. A mystery doll appears in illustration 10. I purchased this doll because I loved the molding of her hair. She is 13" tall and has a bisque head and composition body. The blue headband has blue bows on each side. The seller thought she might have been made by Recknagel, but those dolls are usually marked and this doll has no marks. The company of Wagner and Zetzsche produced dolls made of what they called Haralit. Haralit is described as a composition celluloid type of material. Mr. Zetzsche designed his dolls using his grandchildren as models. The girl, Inge, is seen in illustration 11. She is 12" tall and wears her original costume. Her braids at the top of her head are held by a pink bow. I have a larger Inge too, but this doll's color is much better. The dolls seem to have a tendency to fade with age.

Finally I turned to my cabinet of dolls made by the A. Schoenhut company of Philadelphia. Here again I discovered I had 3 dolls with bows. The last illustrations show models 101, 102 and 105. These are some of the carved hair girls in the Schoenhut line of girl dolls. Model 101 is shown in illustration 12. She is 15" tall and has a painted blue bow on the right side of her head. Model 102 is shown in illustrations 13 and 14. She is 16" tall and her braids are coiled on the side of her face and circle round her head. The braids are tied in back with a blue bow. Lastly, model 105 is shown in illustrations 14 and 15. She is 16" tall and her straight hair has a pink headband that encircles her head and has a pink bow on the back of it. Yes, I do indeed have quite a few dolls with bows in their hair. As I said at the beginning of this article, I do have others, but these are the dolls I can be sure of that have original bows. How many dolls with bows are in your collection? You just might be surprised.

UFDC Salesroom “Journeys of Discovery” United Federation of Doll Clubs 73rd Annual Convention Sales Room Bellevue, Washington August 1-5, 2023 Over 60 dealers came from near and far to share their tempting treasures with convention attendees at this year’s UFDC Annual Convention. Chair, Gail Lemmon did an outstanding job, again, of organizing this year’s sales room. From the Grand Opening on Tuesday of convention week—to Public Day on Friday—to the Last Chance on Saturday, buyers were delighted with the vast array of antique, vintage, and modern dolls, dollhouses, accessories and related items that filled the room.
