The Quest A Collecting Column by Linda Edward

What Are You Referring To? ecently I was asked what doll books I keep on my reference library shelf. This caused me to start thinking about the value of these reference books and what using them has added to my life. From my earliest days as a collector, it was impressed upon me how important it was to understand the items I wanted to collect. In the marketplace, knowing if a doll is “right,” is it what it is purported to be, is it on the correct body, is it costumed appropriately is hugely important. All of these questions need to be answered in our own minds before reaching for our wallets. Of course, talking with dealers, asking questions, and examining examples in person are all great ways to learn but having a basic foundation rooted in creditable research is a huge advantage to any collector. Building a basic foundation for study of antique dolls can be as easy as collecting a few wellresearched volumes to be your guide. As you can see my copies are somewhat battered from The other consideration that I years of heavy use but each one has unlocked a world of doll knowledge for me. became aware of is the many, many happy hours I have spent over the course of the past 40-plus years with my reference books. Sometimes hot on the trail of information about a specific doll topic and often just leafing through a volume, being drawn by a beautiful or interesting photo, and reading about a doll I had never seen in real life. Sometimes this led to a quest to find the doll, and sometimes the knowledge was its own reward. These books have not only educated me on the dolls I adore and pursue, but have also led to a broadened knowledge and appreciation of world history. I fully believe that doll collecting has the power to make the world a better place. Dolls bring history alive, and by understanding the history of human civilization, we better understand who we are as a species today. Our commonalities become clear, and our ability to interact with each other in positive and meaningful ways is increased – a pretty big return for the price of a few books. So, what books would I recommend? That’s a loaded question – I try to buy every doll book possible, and I have found that there is something of interest in every one of them. But for those just beginning to assemble a doll reference library, here are my top picks. 14

Of course with each passing day the line between antique and vintage moves a little more. Doll materials and manufacturers that were considered almost modern when I first began to collect have now joined the ranks of antique and older vintage dolls. Newer books have kept pace with recording the history of these dolls.

materials and makers are now hitting the one-hundredyear mark, I would also include Ursula Mertz’ Collector’s Encyclopedia of Composition Dolls, Collector Books, 1999 and the Collector’s Encyclopedia of Composition Dolls Vol. II, Collector Books, 2004. These recommendations are just the beginning. Over the past 30 years, many exceptional books have been researched, written, and published about narrow focus areas within antique doll collecting. One can find excellent study guides on Paper-Mache, China, Wax, German Porcelain, Cloth, Wood, Composition, and Plastics. Many are complete studies of individual artists or companies. In addition to current works, many of the best reference books are now found on the secondary market. Auction houses (be sure to check those bargain box lots as a world of information and enjoyment may be waiting inside!) and booksellers at shows and online offer a wealth of knowledge for the collector. Time spent with a good reference book is one of the joys of the collecting life and will give you something solid to refer to when chasing that next doll.

Coleman, Crown Publishers, Inc., 1975 Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik German Doll Encyclopedia by Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik. Hobby House Press, 1985 And the 2 Volume set, The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Francois & Danielle Theimer, Gold Horse Publishing, 2003 These six volumes provide a sound basis for the study of the broad field of antique dolls. Today, as dolls of later Every doll reference book has something wonderful to add to the story of dolls. Before you know it, your shelves can be filled with a lifetime’s worth of pleasant study and admiration, adding to the enjoyment of our hobby. 16

Museum News A Show and Tell about how Santa Claus began

come all ye faithful to the Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel (Toy Worlds Museum Basle). Every year, in the Advent season, the Museum spruces itself up with a glittering new holiday show. In 2021 the Christmas Exhibition puts the spotlight on Saint Nicholas and his evolution into Santa Claus. The show runs from November 6th 2021 to February 13th 2022. The exhibition presents Saint Nicholas in various shapes and hues, pictured here. Some images are reminiscent of his early days, as Bishop of Myra; sometimes he is dressed in a green, brown or blue coat trimmed with white fur, as befits Ded Moroz in Russia. The show also features Victorian Christmas decorations, with Santas arriving in hot-air balloons or Zeppelins, as well as candy containers full of sweet secrets. Within the museum young visitors are invited to record a poem for Saint Nicholas (or père Noël, Weihnachtsmann, Santa …) and make it a part of the exhibition. They will get a coloring and a puzzle book. On 6 December, Santiglaus himself pays a visit to our young visitors!

The big white-bearded man in a red coat has seen 1500 years of worship, cutesy kitsch, relentless commercialisation, and appropriation for educational purposes. He is known by different names across the globe (Santiglaus, Sinterklaas, Santa Claus, Père Noël) and is expected to rewards good children with presents, naughty ones with the rod. The Santa tradition begins with Saint Nicholas, who is a combination of two historical figures, Bishop Nicholas of Myra (4th Century) and Nicholas of Sion (6th century), both of whom lived in what is now Turkey. According to legend, Saint Nicholas performed many miracles: he pacified a storm, brought the dead to life, and protected women from prostitution. He has been venerated in Europe as a patron saint of children since medieval times. Until the Reformation in the 16th century, it was Nicholas who brought the presents, but the new Protestantism rejected the veneration of saints. In 1535, it was still Nicholas who brought presents to Martin Luther’s children. Ten years later, Luther’s outgoings for

the “holy Christ” were noted in his accounts. From Christ emerged the Christ Child (Christkind), who replaced Nicholas as the gift-bringer. In the 19th Century, Nicholas returned as a bringer of gifts, albeit in a secular shape. As early as 1820, the Grimm brothers’ German dictionary described Weihnachtsmann, which in some places was synonymous with the Christ Child, as a “word without history.” August Hoffmann von Fallersleben’s song “Tomorrow Weihnachtsmann is coming” indicates that Weihnachtsmann was bringing the gifts in 1835. Sinterklaas arrived in America with Dutch emigrants in the 18th century. Far from home, he lost his religious roots and became Santa Claus, who had hardly anything in common with the Bishop. The image of the jolly

man in a red coat spread in the 19th century, long before Coca-Cola started in 1931 to use him for Christmas campaigns. He returned to Europe with a big belly, reindeer, and a new name. Today, numerous traditions and modern images coexist: the faithful venerate Saint Nicholas, while the advertising industry favors Santa Claus – or Weihnachtsmann in the German-speaking part of the world – because he makes the tills ring. Frizellburg Antique Store Celebrates their 26th Anniversary in a Spirited Way

by Monica Bessette The first weekend of October, I visited Frizellburg Antique Store to join in the KICKOFF celebration of their 26th Anniversary, and their monthlong Halloween party. Laura Turner, owner and proprietor of Frizellburg This brick & mortar shop is my Antiques local favorite. If antique dolls and bears of all sizes and shapes, doll clothes and furniture, and dollhouse dolls and miniatures are on your list of favorites, pay a visit to Frizellburg Antique Store, in Frizellburg, Maryland – right off Rt 140. Every corner of the store was decked out with Halloween decorations, and the dolls and bears were definitely in the SPIRIT--wearing Halloween hats and costumes. All this happened each weekend in October, culminating in the final day on Halloween, Sunday, October 31, where they drew winners of the many raffle and door prizes. Of course, costumes were encouraged! “But this awesome Halloween opportunity has passed,” you say. Fear not! NADDA Show and Sale (continued from 28)

The National Antique Doll Dealers Association (NADDA) show returned in 2021 after a yearlong hiatus on a glorious early September weekend in charming Charleston, South Carolina. More than 20 dealers came from around the country to connect with friends, talk dolls, and to magically create shops out of hotel suites to display rooms full of exquisite dolls in an intimate setting. Attending a NADDA show is often akin to visiting the world’s best doll museums paired with a superb and relaxed buying opportunity. This year’s shopping and learning experience was no exception. Sheila Needle and Sue Brightwell gave a lively seminar on Chinas and Alicia Carver’s discussion of Grodnertals and early woodens was fascinating. A wide variety of dolls were available in every price range from the exceedingly rare and high end to the more frequently found and less expensive. It was a delight to see Alan Pate’s exquisite Japanese dolls and thrilling to see several extremely rare early woodens from England and the Continent. There were plenty of French fashions, from Huret to Bru and Jumeau to Barrois, in addition to luxurious French bébés and expressive German characters. In the vintage category there was even a #1 Barbie! Ticketed attendees were treated to a fabulous tour of historic Charleston including a unique opportunity to see a significant private doll collection. And serendipitously, each night, a trumpeter filled the atrium with uplifting music. What an incredibly special way to attend a doll show for shoppers and dealers alike! If you missed the fun this year do not miss it again. Watch for the NADDA show’s new date and location and put it on your calendar for 2022.

Show Reports Ohio National Doll Show & Sale (cont’d from page 32) Several hundred very enthusiastic doll collectors and dealers from throughout the United States gathered for a fabulous, jam-packed weekend of doll activities at the Ohio National Doll Show in Wilmington, Ohio. Due to the inspired and tireless efforts of Gail Lemmon and Billye Harris, the Ohio National Doll Show has developed into one of Americas premier doll events. The show’s motto is “a doll show the way they used to be” and this year it sure was! Taking place on Saturday and Sunday October 2nd and 3rd there was more to do and see than there was time to do it! Billye Harris and Gail Saturday began early with a breakfast Lemmon talk by Alan Pate on Japanese Dolls of Ohio. Lunch featured Jonathan Green discussing Käthe Kruse, followed by Tea with Bradley Justice who focused on fashions in doll clothing. The evening finished with a lovely candle lit dinner including a fascinating presentation by Andy Ourant on English woodens. One of the striking elements of the show was the clear delight of the participants; happy simply to be together. People spontaneously volunteered to help with any little thing that needed to be done… table set ups, flower placements, party favor distribution and more. There was a special comradery this year, a generosity of spirit among the many attendees, that showed itself throughout the event and it was lovely. The sales room, inhabited by more than 70 dealers from across the country, was filled to the brim with dolls of all descriptions. Many enthusiastic collectors lined up early to get first pick. Even so, sales were brisk throughout the day as collectors took advantage of the in person buying opportunity and huge selection of varied and exceptional dolls. The Ohio National has something to offer for every style of collector in every price range. Gail Lemmon and Billye Harris’ longtime goal for the Ohio National has been to create an event with a ‘mini convention vibe.’ They want their show to offer learning opportunities, great dolls (thanks to support of top local, regional, and national dealers) excellent food and lots of camaraderie and fun. Hats off to them. They’ve succeeded!

Hays Auction On October 8th 2021, Hays conducted a successful auction in Louisville, Kentucky. To quote Ken Hays, “We had the privilege of selling a wonderful, diminutive 10 ¼” high Queen Anne wooden doll from the 1700s. She had her original hair, lovely glass eyes and a swivel neck. This fashion doll was costumed for the period in antique clothing. She has traveled for thirty years with her owner and her husband, residing in several foreign countries before retiring to Florida and then to Kentucky. Her owner protected her under glass and away for light. At auction she commanded an impressive $29,000 plus buyer commission. orothy Wendell Heizer was an extraordinary artist who, using some of the simplest materials, such as fabrics, beads, cotton stuffing, and thread, created masterpieces in the doll world. She was a charter member of the National Institute of American Doll Artists (NIADA), had museum exhibitions, and numerous publications of her work, including a book by Helen Bullard, a co-charter member of NIADA. We will look at a short biography of Mrs. Heizer’s life, how she constructed her dolls, and the subjects she used when creating her dolls. Helen Bullard said in her monograph on Mrs. Heizer, “She is one of those lucky people who knew from the beginning what she wished to do.”* Indeed, at age eight she longed for a French bisque lady doll. Her mother was traveling to California to be treated for advanced tuberculosis and left instructions for the doll to be purchased for Dorothy. Unfortunately, a French child doll was purchased instead, leaving Dorothy disappointed. When her mother passed away later that year (1889) Dorothy and two brothers were sent to California to live with her maternal aunt and uncle. While in California, she had a china doll with a lady figure and another doll with a lovely bisque head and hair that she could brush. Remembering her desire for a ‘real lady’ doll, she took the head off the china doll and put the bisque head on the body to achieve what she wanted. Now she had a doll where she could pin together costumes and change hairstyles. When she went back east to Pennsylvania the next year, she was working on doll clothes by cutting, draping, and pinning, never sewing. Dorothy’s love of fashion continued to fuel her dollmaking efforts. At age ten she created paper dolls with fashionable wardrobes and used a sticky wax to attach the outfits to the dolls. Impressed with her work, her father took the dolls to Schwartz’s in Philadelphia where they sold for $3.50 each. Her attempts at making clothes for herself were ‘sketchy,’ but the artist persevered and in 1899, she entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her primary interest was in portraiture painting, so she focused on anatomy, sculpture, and study of the figure. After 3½ years in school, she suffered a nervous breakdown and withdrew. In 1904,

she traveled to Colorado where she met her future husband, Charles Edward Heizer. She did not paint; she continued to work on clothing for herself and improved her sewing skills. After she married in 1906, she was busy helping her husband run his father’s hotel and raising a family. She did have several attempts at making dolls but was dissatisfied with the results. She improved her sewing skills with the help of her sister-in-law and mother-in-law and began dressing commercial dolls. Her sister-in-law taught her how to turn a tube right-side-out, a technique she used later on doll’s fingers. The family returned east and settled in Essex Falls, New Jersey where she began making dolls to sell at church bazaars. Now 40, she returned to school, taking a course in New York on life painting and drawing. Her husband felt her dolls needed to be seen and called Hickson Department Store in New York, saying his wife was making interesting dolls. She brought an example to the store and received orders for eleven more dolls. After a sale of two dolls to the Newark Museum, she gained an agent, Mrs. Curtis. This led to more commissions for historical dolls for the Newark Museum. Mrs. Noyes of Washington D.C. requested six dolls in period costumes. In 1923, she created a rag doll that was sold as a kit through Modern Priscilla magazine. Pretty Miss Penelope was designed by Mrs. Heizer and reproduced on flesh-colored fabric with the face already printed. Instructions detailing how to needle sculpt the doll’s head and clothing patterns stamped on the fabric were included. Through Mrs. Curtis, she received a commercial commission for the Corticelli Silk Company. She made a doll of Irene Castle, a famous ballroom dancer, known in movies and Broadway shows. It was her first doll with separate turned fingers and she sold it to the Corticelli Company for $100. After that, different agents and shops, feature articles in newspapers and magazines, and exhibitions all spread the word of her exquisite work. In November of 1928, she created a flapper pattern doll and clothing for Modern Priscilla magazine. Patterns were sold for the doll, a hat, coat, dress, and pajamas. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, her work continued to evolve and improve. Always interested in making her dolls better, she developed a technique for setting the head in a natural line on the shoulders. Even her sewing dolls, dolls she made to hold sewing instruments, several of which she made to be sold at a Bar Harbor, Maine gift shop, were lovely. Once she finished the six period dolls for Mrs. Noyes, she started on a series of sixteen queens for her. She also made multiple dolls for Arts and Crafts Exhibitions. When her husband died in 1936, she managed to make her living by making dolls. In fact, in 1938, a Trans-Lux film company came to the Maine family cottage she was staying at and filmed her working on a contemporary doll in a dirndl.Later she heard of an exhibition of dolls at Spears in New York which included several of her dolls. She went to view the exhibition and noted that some of her dolls were crooked. She asked to speak to the person in charge, Mary E. Lewis, founder of the United Federation of Doll Clubs. This show traveled around the country and was reviewed in multiple magazines. In the fall, Mrs. Velvalee Dickinson came to Maine to visit and took back several dolls to sell in her New York shop. In one of Mrs. Dickinson’s newsletters, she writes “I have the good fortune to again have a few of Dorothy Heizer’s beautiful dolls. Of course, you are familiar with these dolls and know that they are really the finest handmade dolls of our time. Mrs. Heizer once made only large dolls for which she received handsome prices. However, I have persuaded her to make a smaller doll to sell at a lower figure. These dolls are just as complete in every detail as her larger ones. They are approximately ten inches high. At the present time, I have a Queen Victoria, Madame Recamier, Marie Antionette, Queen Elizabeth, and a beautiful Madonna. These figures will be about $35 each. If you are interested, but cannot come in to see these dolls, I will gladly send you a picture.” – Velvalee Dickinson Newsletter, Coleman Collection, 1940 Mrs. Heizer continued making dolls until her eyesight failed her in 1962. When she passed in 1973, she had left an amazing legacy to the art world. To create her dolls, Mrs. Heizer started with a portrait. She would scale the size of the doll based on the size she wanted the completed doll. Her scale of dolls was unusual – in the small size, a six-foot man would be 10 1/8 inches; in the medium size, he would be 13 ½ inches; in the large size, he would be 14 ¼ inches; and in the largest size, he would 15 ¾ inches. She began using this scale for her dolls sometime in the early 1930s. She would draw a skeleton, adjust for the body and clothing, and have an exact size for the finished doll, both dressed and undressed. Using copper wire, she created the skeleton, covered it with eiderdown cotton, then stretched cotton crepe for the skin. Building up the face using organdy, eiderdown, flannel, and covered wired, she set small wooden beads for eyes. Once again, cotton crepe was stretched over the face with a seam beneath the chin and needle sculpting around the eyes, nostrils, and ears, then sewn up the back of the head. Hair was sewn to the head, the crepe was painted with opaque watercolors, and the doll was set to dry while she began work on the clothing. Once the face was dry, she would complete the facial features, again using watercolors. Her earlier dolls had cotton stuffing rather than the eiderdown to create the body shape, and she used dyed cotton for the skin instead of the technique of painting the crepe. 40

If jewelry was to be added or beadwork done on the gown, she meticulously counted the number of jewels in her source picture so she could replicate it with beads. She would carefully make the same clothing from the portrait, creating her own patterns for the clothes. Mrs. Noyes suggested she make the clothing non-removable in the 1930s; earlier dolls could be undressed. From 1940 – 1961, based on her records, she and Helen Bullard counted 367 dolls that she had created. Even extrapolating that backward to her dolls of the 1920s, her production was probably limited to 700 – 800 dolls. Of the dolls themselves, her records show 112 different subjects that she created, balancing her portraits of royalty with American subjects, fashion dolls, and literary characters. The range of the royalty characters is astounding from Marie Antoinette and French Kings to Henry VIII and his wives, Elizabeth I, Elizabeth II, Isabella of Castile, and Catherine the Great. It is believed she created thirty different American subjects including Martha and George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and Benjamin Franklin. Her literary characters included Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and a series of Mother Goose dolls, such as Mary, Mary, and Bo-Peep. Period pieces included peddlers and ladies in fashions from different eras.

Exacting and precise, her health was negatively impacted when she took on projects such as Elizabeth II in her wedding gown and Louis XV. For Elizabeth II, she suffered a nervous breakdown after sewing 45,000 seed pearls and rhinestones on the wedding gown. For Louis XV, she used 18,000 seed pearls to create the fleur de lis on his cape. Her son sent a letter to Mrs. Wells, who had commissioned the dolls of Louis XV and Madame du Pompadour, explaining there was a delay with Madame du Pompadour due to a problem with his mother’s right hand after all of Louis’ beadwork. For simpler enjoyment, she made dolls for her family. On Antiques Roadshow Mrs. Heizer’s niece arrived with a group of lovely dolls made by her aunt and given to her when she came to visit. Some even included their boxes with hand-drawn, hand-painted, and signed labels. Mostly figures of little girls, they were a departure from the portrait dolls Mrs. Heizer typically had created. Regardless of which of Mrs. Heizer’s dolls you are attracted to, each one is a very special work of art. From her simpler early dolls and kits to her extraordinary beadwork and attention to detail, every doll remains a testament to Mrs. Heizer’s exacting precision, and love of her subject. 44

Her Fascinating Furniture by Donna W. Brown

ver the years some little girls were given expensive dolls and exquisite wooden doll furniture, carved and intricately painted. Other young girls made doll furniture out of match boxes stacked up as dresser drawers and used shoe boxes as beds. Both served the children well as they played with their beloved dolls. In 1963, the Deluxe Reading Corporation/ Topper Toys under the direction of owner, Henry Orenstein, changed the doll paradigm and provided all girls with an adorable doll and her own fascinating furniture at a moderate price. The viny l8-inch doll was Penny Brite who had short blonde hair and side glancing painted eyes. She was jointed at the neck, arms and legs, and her limbs were flexible enough to be bent into lifelike poses. She was marked “Deluxe Reading Corp 1963” on her head, and “Deluxe Reading Corp Elizabeth NJ Pat. Pending” on her back Penny cost only $1.29 and came in a hard plastic case. She wore a red pleated dress and matching hair bow attached with a straight pin, flat white shoes, and a booklet showing available outfits and furniture. Though the Penny doll depicted a young girl, not a fashion doll, she had a sports car and teenage-style wardrobe. Furniture sets were constructed of hard plastic and elaborate in design, but they were brittle and easily broken. This makes complete sets difficult to find today unless boxed and unopened. All three sets of furniture and her car set included a cardboard cutout of Penny wearing an appropriate outfit.

Penny Brite’s Kitchen Dinette set included a dish cabinet and sink, a rinse tray with cups and saucers, table, two chairs, a lazy Susan, glasses, and a dress and apron. The set came in either blue and white or green and white furniture. In 1965, it was offered in the Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog for $4.79. Penny’s Beauty Parlor was listed for $3.99 and included a stool, pivoting hairdryer on a stand, a sink with a mirror, and a chair that tilted and turned. The sink could hold water so Penny could actually have her hair washed while wearing a yellow smock embroidered with a P. that came with the set. The Bedroom set, which sold for $4.99 in the Montgomery Ward catalog, came with a white canopy bed, much like the Barbie canopy bed made by Suzy Goose. Penny’s came with a pink bedspread and pillow trimmed in white lace trim. In addition, it had a dressing table with matching pink ruffled skirt. The table displayed two lamps and a large mirror. The lamps were usually white but have been found in green and brown. The set also had a Penny cutout wearing a two-piece blue pajama outfit.

The School Room included a desk with attached seat, blackboard and easel, briefcase, pen, and book. The chalkboard was real and came with a full-size box of chalk and an eraser. A plaid jumper outfit completed the set, which sold for $3.99. Penny had a Travel Set that featured a blue streamline sports car with bucket seats and a radio antenna. It included a suitcase, hat box, shoulder bag, pet dog, and a red coat and hat. It sold for $5.39 in 1965, but recently sold for over $100 on eBay. Deluxe Reading/Topper Toys was always creating new ways to market their dolls. In 1964, they designed

a spinning carousel store display, The Wonderful World of Penny Brite. It featured seven Penny dolls posing in various scenes. The first scene depicted Penny in the red dress she wore when purchased alone. In the others she wore outfits that could be purchased in elaborate gift packages. One scene included Chit-Chat, a white cotton top that had, “chit chat” embroidered on it, black pants, red princess phone, date book, red flat shoes, hanger, and booklet. Another scene showed Anchors Aweigh a twopiece sailor outfit with matching hat, which also came with red shoes and purse.

Other outfits included in the carousel were Winter Princess with Penny wearing slacks, a sweater, matching hat, and ice skates. Singing in the Rain featured boots, umbrella, raincoat, and hat, Sun and Fun included a bathing suit, hooded coverup, bag, and towel. One of the most popular outfits was Flower Girl; it included a long pink gown with two tier skirt trimmed with flowered embroidery and lace bodice. It came with fabric flower bouquet, pink hair ribbon, white hanger, and flat pink shoes.

Penny Brite television commercials could be seen in 1965 during children’s shows, and depicted Penny posing in various positions with knees and elbows bent. Two of these black and white commercials can be seen on YouTube. Trade magazines were bombarded with print ads for the Topper Toys wholesale market. They also promoted a 13 ½ inch baby doll with furniture who was named Baby Brite. It did not have the selling power of the original Penny Brite. Because of her success, several companies copied her size and face creating Penny Brite clones. In 1965, a doll named Little Tuppence was created by a company in New Zealand, Lincoln International, and was sold throughout Australia and New Zealand. A Miss Cindy doll was manufactured by Cragstan Company, and other clones have been found, including one called Brite. The Camay Corporation also made a clone of Penny. Most of these dolls are labeled Hong Kong and, though with Penny’s likeness, they were of poor quality. Penny Brite’s Travel Case came in black and light blue. 50

By the late 1960s, Penny had many more outfits, but the elaborate packaging and accessories were gone. Deluxe Reading/Topper Toys expanded their doll sales in 1970 to include the Dawn Doll collection, which overshadowed their previous dolls. They also added an extremely profitable line of toys for boys which consisted of the Johnny Seven collection of vehicles and military toys. In 1970, Deluxe Reading/Topper Toys discontinued Penny Brite. The company went on to expand, and the following year their advertising budget was 13.5 million dollars. Unfortunately, the company soon ran into financial difficulty when an audit showed discrepancies. They declared bankruptcy in 1973. Many of their doll molds, including Penny Brite’s, were sold to other companies. Though Deluxe Reading/Topper Toys left the doll industry to others like Mattel and Ideal, their insight into a little girl’s world and the dolls that would intrigue her had been unrivaled for over two decades. Penny Brite’s wonderful world filled with fascinating furniture is still charming collectors today.

ANTIQUE MILITARY & HISTORICAL DOLLS STEIFF AND HARWIN by Louis Badolato with Hilary Pauley

ollectors are familiar with Steiff’s high quality Teddy bears and other animals, with their trademark button in the ear. However, many people don’t know about the highly realistic military and historical dolls produced by Steiff and its competitors in the early 20th century. I stumbled upon Steiff and Harwin soldier and other historical dolls while seeking to bridge the gap in display between my 1:32" scale antique toy soldiers and 1:1" scale military uniforms and militaria collections. Along with Hilary Pauley, from whom I bought one of my favorite dolls, I discovered that Steiff, Harwin, and other WWIera manufacturers of military dolls made highly realistic 11-to-24 inch tall dolls, perhaps for similar reasons as toy companies in the 1960s and 1970s produced “Action Man” and G.I. Joe” soldier dolls.

STEIFF MILITARY & HISTORICAL DOLL PRODUCTION As early as 1892, Steiff began dabbling in doll-making, producing 21 different types of 10-inch dolls. Their bodies and clothes were made of felt but the heads, produced by an unknown contractor, were made of a composite material stamped “unbreakable” and “washable.” One early doll was of a sailor, and the 1897 catalogue included a character doll of a General George Washington in uniform (perhaps Steiff’s first attempt to reach an international market). In the 1902/1903 catalogue we see that Richard Steiff had reorganized Steiff doll production, creating the first all-felt Steiff character dolls, with trademark center seam faces and buttons52

in-ear. Richard Steiff was not pleased with earlier Steiff dolls whose heads resembled the porcelain or composite faces of traditional dolls. He decided to use felt and velvet, stuffed with excelsior (basically, wood shavings), black button eyes, and oversized noses, and painted with details such as eyebrows, rosy cheeks, nostrils and mustaches, to create cartoonish caricature dolls he felt would appeal to children, especially young boys. The 5-way jointed bodies were also designed in a cartoonish fashion, with short and obese or tall, elongated, skinny builds, oversized feet, and hamfisted hands. These dolls, called Karikaturpuppen, were made in 14 and 20-inch sizes. The line included men in uniform from soldiers and sailors to police and firemen. Steiff introduced the new dolls at Germany’s 1903 Leipzig Spring Fair. Among the 1903 offerings was a British “Bobby,” a German firefighter and a German sailor with red hair and beard, and bellbottomed pants.

French, Italian Bersaglieri, and American infantrymen, were made available with optional field packs and full field equipment, with the leather boots, belts and straps reproduced in oil-cloth, and wood and metal rifles, metal swords and bayonets (with correct sword and bayonet-knots).

With the advent of the First World War and its brutal trench warfare, cartoonish representations of soldiers were frowned upon by the German government, whose War Ministry, according to a June 12, 1915, letter from the Berlin Toy Export Company Hertzog, ordered the cartoonish Steiff soldier dolls pulled from their window display. Steiff was directed only to send more realistic soldier dolls with “clean looking faces, blue eyes and painted beards.” These more realistic dolls, with correct physical proportions, smaller feet, often in removable boots with hobnailed soles, accurately proportioned facial features, blue or brown eyes, and pleasant expressions, would be produced for the remainder of the war. These War-Production soldiers were so realistically produced,

that tiny crown buttons identical to those on the real German Infantry uniforms were manufactured for the 14 and 17-inch German Infantry dolls, while a magnificent 1918 American “Doughboy” has both the Germany occupation patch on his shoulder and the WWI Victory Medal Ribbon on his chest. Steiff, a German company, focused on all branches of the German military, making dozens of different types of Cavalry (Uhlans, Dragoons, Chevaulegers, Cuirassiers), Infantry, Artillery, Military Police and Specialists, Sailors and Marines, in ranks ranging from Private to Admiral. A far more limited number of similarly accurate dolls of Weimar Republic and (eventually) Nazi Era German Soldiers were produced by Steiff in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Steiff even produced Cavalry Horses for the dolls.

In 1915, Steiff also began production of smaller (9inch and 11-inch) “Young Heroes” dolls of soldiers of Germany and its Central Powers Allies, Austria, Turkey and Croatia. These dolls, produced with childish faces, doll shoes rather than realistic boots, and more toyish accessories (such as rifles, swords and flags), were designed as playthings for younger children.

HARWIN SOLDIER & SAILOR DOLLS The English firm of Harwin was a company established in 1914 in London which profited from the ban of German imports during World War I. Their sales manager was Fred Taylor who previously worked as Steiff’s agent in the UK. They were able to copy Steiff products without fear of copyright infringement due to the war. Harwin made dolls copying Steiff’s pre-war

grotesque, cartoonish designs, producing plump, knob-kneed Soldier and Sailor Dolls from the various Allied Nations, including various British “Tommy,” Scottish “Ally,” French and Belgian Soldiers. Period advertisements show they also made female versions of these soldier dolls, as well as uniformed bears and dogs.

Either Harwin, or another of the more than 70 British Companies producing Soldier Dolls during WWI, later made copies of the more realistic, properly proportioned, Steiff soldier dolls, with highly realistic equipment, produced by Steiff upon Albert Schlopsnies’s designs. These dolls were very similar to Steiff’s soldier dolls, and were produced in 11-inch, 14-inch and 17 to 20-inch sizes, like the Steiff offerings, except that the pressed felt faces only had a seam from the nose to under the chin, and had glass eyes with whites and pupils rather than the black (and later blue and brown) button eyes used by Steiff. These dolls made later in the war years by either Harwin (as several auction catalogue descriptions indicate) or a competitor (as their absence from Harwin advertising materials suggests), had very realistic faces, uniforms and actual leather rather than oil-cloth boots, belts and accessories. These exceeded even Steiff for accuracy and attention to detail.

Each article of clothing, except for the shoes and socks/stockings, must be made by the exhibitor and must be removable. All fabrics and trim used should be of the specified period or, if modern, of the correct fiber content, pattern, scale, and color representing the period. Of all the various Harry Schoenhut babies, the 11 inch articulated toddler is probably the least common.

The excellent original face paint of this wood toddler mimics that of bisque dolls: two color lips, painted eyes with whites, iris rings, and tan eye-lid line, eye and nose dots, and delicate tan eyebrows. 66

The 11 inch toddler was made for nine years, from 1917 until 1926, and is the smallest size Schoenhut doll. The next smallest was the 13 inch Nature Limb baby. The 11 inch toddler is marked “H.E. Schoenhut, Copyright 1913,” the copyright for just the Harry Schoenhut babies, on a small round green decal on the back of the neck, while a green oval Schoenhut Dolls decal with the general patent date of 1911 will be found on the upper back.

The round decal on the toddler’s neck gives the Harry Schoenhut Baby patent date, while the oval decal presents the general patent for all Schoenhut dolls. Although babies were patented in 1913, 11 inch toddlers were not sold until 1917.

They were a wigged doll with a brown mohair bob, listed in the catalogs as 11-107W. No Nature Limb babies or painted hair toddlers were made in this size. The 11 inch toddler came with shoes, socks, and a stand, and was most likely dressed in the usual girl’s union suit and possibly also in a white lawn knee-length dress. Unlike the Nature Limb baby, the toddler was not dressed in a long gown and bonnet. This 11 inch toddler retains her original wig, shoes, and socks, with a replaced union suit. When dressing an 11 inch toddler, consider the 1917 to 1926 timeframe. Lightweight fabrics are easier to sew in this small size. Look for vintage buttons and trims in small sizes. A period sailor costume will be appropriate, as will a drop-waist dress. Thanks to the popularity of the similar-sized French bisque doll, Bleuette, the patterns published for her will also fit the smallest Schoenhut, and many are of the same time period. You might also be able to reduce the size of other doll patterns from that era, like those in the Mary Frances Sewing Book. Susan Sirkus did this in her CD of patterns, “Mary Frances and Me.” RIGHT: Original zinc-coated steel stands for the 11 inch toddler measure 3½ inches across. Anna McQuilkin’s booklet, “Sew for Schoenhuts” also has a dress pattern, like the white lawn dress mentioned before, and a romper pattern for the smallest toddler. Factory rompers were made in gingham check or solid-color chambray fabric. Because of the bob hairstyle, you could dress the 11 inch toddler as a little boy. The McQuilkin pattern has been redrawn with

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS MATERIALS: Gingham and blue chambray were the fabrics used at the Schoenhut factory for these belted rompers. Seersucker or pique would be appropriate, too. Three buttons decorate the front, if you wish, and one button is added over the snap on the belt, or you can make a button hole. Snaps can close the back opening, or you may use buttons with loops or buttonholes. A bias strip finishes the neckline, of either the romper fabric, or any light weight fabric. You will also need some cord or narrow flat elastic for the romper legs, long enough to fit at the knee and be sewn into a seam. BODICE: Sew the shoulder seams of the bodice, then sew the sleeve caps into the armseyes. Line the collar pieces (with romper fabric or another lightweight fabric scrap), turn and press. Baste the collars into position so the center back hem allowance can be turned under later. Be sure the collars are centered on the bodice front. Stitch the bias strip to the neckline, including the collars, trimming off any leftover at the ends. Press bias to the inside, and hem to cover the raw edges on the inside. Sew the side seams of the bodice and sleeves, hemming the sleeves either before or after the seam, as you choose. Set aside.

PANTS: Sew the short center back seam and hem the rest of the center back to make the opening. Sew the entire center front seam. Turn up and sew a casing at the bottom of each leg. Secure elastic at one side of casing with stitching, run elastic through that casing, draw up to create some gentle gathers (not too tight, elastic should fit at knee level) and secure elastic to other side of casing. Repeat for second leg. Matching seams of fronts and backs at the crotch, sew the inseam, including the casing and elastic ends. FINISHING: Stitch the bodice to the pants, gathering or pleating the pants’ top edge to fit the bodice. Add decorative buttons to the front of the bodice. Hem the center back opening, including the ends of the bias strip at the neckline, and apply closures of your choice. Make the belt by turning the raw edges to the inside and topstitching the ends and side closed. Add a snap closure to the belt and a decorative button, or make a buttonhole and button closure. Push the ends of the legs up to the knees and arrange the casings to be hidden when doll is wearing the rompers (see photo).
