Book Review: Tony Sarg: Genius at Play: Adventures in Illustration, Puppetry, and Popular Culture Written by Lenore D. Miller and Stephanie Haboush Plunkett • Review by Laurie McGill The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts recently presented a stellar special exhibit on 20th century Renaissance man, Tony Sarg (1880-1942). The exhibit ran from June 10, 2023 through November 5, 2023. It was the first comprehensive exhibition of the life, art, and inventions of Sarg. Sarg was multifaceted. He was an illustrator, an animator, a designer, a businessman, and a showman. He was an inventive puppeteer who is known as the father of modern puppetry in North America. It was Sarg who, in 1927, invented the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. “Upside-down” puppets (with handlers beneath the characters vs. above), the balloons were an instant hit and remain wildly popular today. Noted Madame Alexander collector, Rodney Waller, shared some of his Alexander Tony Sarg puppets, play booklets, and stage with the Rockwell museum, and they were prominently displayed at the entrance to one of the rooms in the exhibition. The exhibition catalog is a must-have for collectors interested in the charm of childhood. During his lifetime, Sarg’s target audience was “children from six to sixty.” The 240-page, beautifully illustrated book is comprehensive—covering Tony’s life, as well as his countless gifts to the world. The Tony Sarg: Genius at Play exhibition travels to the Nantucket Historical Association in the Summer 2024. Sarg lived on the island and ran a gift shop where he sold his various creations, which included toys, pantry boxes, and other curiosities.

The exhibition catalog is available through Amazon, as well as the Norman Rockwell Museum. At this writing, autographed copies of the book are available from the museum.

The Ohio National Doll Show & Sale Newark, Ohio • October 7 & 8, 2023 • OhioNationalDollShow.com The annual Ohio National Doll Show was held in early October at the charming Cherry Valley Lodge Hotel. The hotel, surrounded by a pond and gardens, was an idyllic setting for the two-day event. Show coordinators, Gail Lemmon and Billye Harris, gave attendees another memorable doll-filled weekend. Saturday morning yielded a delightful program presented by Cynthia Orgeron. Cynthia shared her knowledge and passion for the Louisiana-made Julie Ann dolls. (Watch for an article on this topic by Cynthia in an upcoming issue of Antique DOLL Collector.) A luncheon followed later in the day where Ann Leis, author of the award-winning book, Dewees Cochran: The Artist and Her Dolls, spoke about the talented NIADA dollmaker’s life and the timeline of events surrounding her career. Mid-afternoon, renowned doll designer Robert Tonner was the special guest speaker during a lovely tea. Robert opened with a humorous video on “doll collectors,” followed by a retrospective of his Gail Lemmon (L) and Billye Harris (R), Cynthia Orgeron, guest speaker Ohio National Doll Show coordinators (“Julie Ann” dolls) and dealer, La successful career over the past 25-30 years. Maison Verte. The day ended with a candlelit dinner where Alicia Carver of Carver Wooden Creations shared with attendees the history of GrÖdnertals. Early woodens from Oberammergau, Tuck Combs, and the peg woodens that Queen Victoria played with as a child were among the dolls discussed. The events, which offered table favors and door prizes, heightened the anticipation for the following day. The doll show opened its doors on Sunday morning to a group of stellar dealers who came from near and far to offer a wide variety of wares from very early dolls of wood, wax, and papier-mâché to BJD and Reborn dolls. Over 200 tables overflowing with dolls, teddy bears and related accessories graced the expansive 31,000-square-foot sales room. All fundraising proceeds went to the United Federation of Dolls Clubs, Inc. and to the Olentangy Doll Club. he holiday season is the perfect time to feature and celebrate one’s collection of antique dolls. After all, many of the antique dolls in our collections were originally given as holiday gifts to their first owners. My dolls seem to come to life amidst all the Christmas decorations! The following images provide a peek into some of the dolls’ holiday activities.

Family and friends gather around the table for Thanksgiving dinner in the Izannah house. One can be sure the topic of conversation is centered on upcoming holiday preparations and activities. Seated around the table are seven original Izannah Walker cloth dolls which date from the late 1840s to early 1860s and range in size from 16 inches to 19 inches, an 18-inch painted black cloth one-of-akind girl made of stockinette made sometime between 1865 and 1880 and a 19 inch Lancaster Rag boy made by a yet to be identified maker in the late 19th century in or near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

I think this image captures the magic and wonder of the season. The doll seated underneath the tree, is a 25-inch unmarked rubber shoulder head on a cloth body and was made in the middle of the 19th century. It is assumed the head was produced by one of the several American companies producing rubber doll heads at that time.

The Izannahs are in search of the perfect tree at the local tree farm. They are convinced this tree is the one! These two girls are 16 inches tall and are dressed in mid-19th-century clothing. 22

Meet Mary and Cookie and their friend Frosty. Mary, standing to the left, is a 28-inch painted cloth doll. She has a unique molded head that turns. Mary was made in the early 1900s. Cookie, to the right, is 29 inches tall and is a late 1800s portrait face cloth doll.

Caroling is a wonderful tradition and these six German papiermâchés have beautiful voices! They range in size from 29 inches to 31 inches and date from the late 1840s to the mid-1860s.

These three late English woodens gather to write holiday letters. The dolls range in size from 20 inches to 25. The doll standing to the right of the desk is circa 1770s while the other two date from the 1790-1810 period. The chair is English from the Georgian period, and the desk is probably American and of the same period.

This grouping of mid-19th century German china heads was made by various makers. They reside on top of a cupboard year-round and celebrate the holidays with a small feather tree on top of their one-drawer stand. The dolls range in size from 12 inches to 24 inches. 24

This family of German papier-mâchés made by Voit gather in front of the tree. Three flirty-eyed girls are flanked by a pair of early paintedeye girls. Their sizes range from 24 inches to 34 inches and date from the 1840s to the 1850s.

Cookie loves Christmas and has been a good girl this year, She knows there is no coal in her stocking!

These large English woodens share a small feather tree and presents for the holidays. The seated girl is 31 inches tall and wears what is believed to be her original calico gown. The standing girl is 28-1/2 inches and wears clothing made from early and vintage fabrics. Both dolls date from the 1780s to around 1800. ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

oordinated by Marsha Hunter to honor the Alexander Doll Company’s 100th anniversary, dolls were shared by UFDC contributors: Alonia Alexander, Alisha Cole, Janet Jacobs, Marsha Hunter, Diane McCarthy, Ursula Mertz, Nancy Moore, Susan Mathias, as well as the UFDC Doll Museum to make this exhibit a special one to mark this important milestone. The exhibit contained such delights as the first doll Beatrice Alexander created—a small cloth World War I nurse. A representation of Madame herself greeted visitors. Madame’s Dickens Characters, Little Women, and Alice in Wonderland with the March Hatter joined the array of dolls made across the past century. Cloth and composition examples of the Dionne Quintuplets showed the development of these famous little girls from babies to toddlers. These were the dolls

that brought the Alexander Doll Company to the level of the current-day leading doll manufacturers. Enlarged advertisements were framed and stood behind the dolls to aid in explaining the dating of the dolls on display. Dolls with special provenances joined the celebration. Alexander’s composition Jane Withers stood by a doll from Jane Wither’s personal childhood doll collection, a dark-complected cloth doll, Mammie. Dolls with interesting backstories were present such as Madame’s Susie-Q and Bobbie-Q cloth dolls from the 1930s-1940s. These dolls sprung from a line of greeting cards by Norcross. Madame’s animals were there, too, along with familiar favorites such as the ever-fashionable Cissy. The exhibit tied in closely with Marsha Hunter’s seminar presented later during convention week.

UFDC SPECIAL EXHIBIT Little Red Riding Hood: A Tribute to Elaine Pardee United Federation of Doll Clubs 73rd Annual Convention Special Exhibit Bellevue, Washington August 1-5, 2023

he Sacramento Pioneer & Independent Spirits Doll Clubs gave 2023 UFDC convention attendees an insightful and touching look into the story of “Little Red Riding Hood” dedicated to the memory of Elaine Pardee (UFDC member Region 2N) who collected not only Little Red Riding Hood dolls and memorabilia but also Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls—and co-authored (with Jackie Robertson) two books on the topic: Encyclopedia of Bisque Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls 1936– 1947, Identification & Values and Encyclopedia of Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls: Identification & Values, Volume 2. The tone of the exhibit was set by a continuous-loop video that told the history of the “Little Red Riding Hood” story set against the “Little Red Riding Hood” song by Sam The Sham & the Pharaohs, circa 1966 (which delighted the Baby Boomers attending the convention this year). The brilliant sea of red included Little Red Riding Hood dolls by, of course, Nancy Ann as well as the 1928

cut-and-sew Kellogg’s Cereal Premium doll, paper dolls (including Hallmark Card’s Storybook card of Red), Effanbee’s Wee Patsy, early 1915 Effanbee Red Riding Hood dolls, R. John Wright, and so many others (even a Troll doll was spied wearing a red cape). The Big Bad Wolf was well represented, too. The image of Little Red Riding Hood appeared on countless items over the years such as child-sized sewing machines, dishware, small suitcases, little purses, shape books, picture blocks, etc. The story is a European fairy tale, and the most familiar versions were penned by the Brothers Grimm (Germany) and Charles Perrault (France.) The story is a cautionary tale; the moral: “Obey Your Mother and/or Do Not Talk to Strangers.” “Little Red Riding Hood” is in the public domain, which accounts for such a broad array of items that feature her image.

So Many Stories in Every Doll – The Lilli Baitz Actress Dolls by Florence Theriault

hen a doll is brought to the podium in a landmark auction, it is, at first sight, an object. Revered, admired, sought for— all of these, yes, but an “object,” a “thing.” Then a collector’s curiosity takes center stage. Who made the doll? And why? Who owned the doll before? What paths has it traveled? In short, what is its story? And when that story takes many twists and turns, when it involves real people whose names we know, or other people previously unnoted in related

cultural movements or historical events, suddenly the doll, however revered it might be for its beauty, becomes more. It becomes an icon, a testimony, a living story. Such it is with the collection of actress dolls from the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art. The names of the people who left their footprint in the history of these dolls ought to be remembered. Lilli Baitz. Edith Traphagen, J. Hoffheimer, Phyllis Spencer, and, of course, Rosalie Whyel. Not to even

mention the celebrated actresses whose portraits were presented in this remarkable collection of dolls. Here is what we know. The dolls were modeled and created under the auspices of Lilli Baitz, the Austrian doll artist, who, in 1909, with her husband Roman Baitz, had founded the arts and craft studio “Lilli”, L&R Baitz headquartered in Berlin. After World War I an adjunct studio was established in Salzburg, Austria, and appears

to have worked in close collaboration with the Salzburg Werkstatte which aimed to preserve the region’s traditional artisan skills. It was this Werkstatte which assembled and costumed the dolls from the Baitz designs which she expressed in this way: “I shake my fairytale tree and let clothes fall like the sun, moon and stars.” It was during the Salzburg years that the remarkable actress dolls were created, likely late 1920s until 1932 when ANTIQUE DOLL COLLECTOR

Lilli Baitz moved back to her childhood home in Austria. The dolls, however, remained at the Salzburg Werkstatte where they were discovered soon after by the American art dealer, J.H. Hoffheimer, who was touring Europe at the time. He acquired the complete collection of Lilli Baitz costumed dolls, which included dolls wearing regional costumes and dolls representing children in historical costumes. Bringing the entire collection to America, he created a remarkable exhibition that toured the United States for several years. Next enter Ethel Traphagen, the renegade fashion designer and founder of the New York Traphagen School

of Fashion. She, too, had traveled the world from Europe to Africa to Asia, in search of fresh costume and fabric designs, and, seeing the research importance of the Baitz collection, acquired it in one swoop from Mr. Hoffheimer, installing it in her school’s museum archives where it remained from 1937 until 1990. A preservation nod next goes to Phyllis Spencer, the museum curator. Learning that the museum was about to be sold to fund the struggling school, she determined to preserve the Baitz dolls and purchased intact the entire Baitz collection. It remained carefully preserved, each doll in its custom leather case, in her small New York

apartment for the next decade, until its acquisition by the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art. There the collection rested until now. The dolls, now in their 90th years, have “lived” remarkable lives, born of the German art secessionist movement, flourishing in the boom-boom years of the 1920s, victims of Depression Era struggles, touring art and fashion circles of America, and showcased in museums at different times of their lives. But there is so much yet to be learned. Here are just

a few of the facts that we do not know. Why did Lilli Baitz design actress dolls? What was the connection of these celebrated women to Lilli Baitz? Who was J.H. Hoffheimer and what was the story of his traveling exhibitions in the United States? Remarkable dolls, indeed! And, oh, the stories, each could tell. picture of an antique doll dress was presented in Part 1, along with auditioned antique fabrics. Here are several other dresses, which were also considered for creating a pattern and dress for an antique fashion doll. Image 1 was the inspiration for this article.

In analyzing the fabrics in Image 1, the blueprint to the right that appears to match the design might be from the mid-1860s. However, an analysis of the fabric shows it to be 35 inches wide and probably dated to the early 20th Century.

The next choice is the red with green accents fabric. This fabric is 24½ inches wide, has a wonderful border on one selvage side, is medium weight and unused, a rarity for antique fabrics. Cutting the skirt on the cross grain would yield a skirt and enough fabric to cut the bodice patterns on the straight grain, and the bias strips. Two velvet vintage/antique ribbons were auditioned.

They are wearing appropriate underpinnings, with a hoop skirt under their slips. The reproduction fabric was created from an original 1860 fabric by Carmel Doll Shop. Both patterns are included. The two dolls are similar. Mlle Emily Mathilda has a longer waist length and a slightly larger shoulder width. Their height is about the same. The skirt measurements are the same for both. There are many resources available to create a pattern. Many sew-ists have patterns in their collection to use as a starting point. Free patterns are available on the internet. Honor copyrights when creating a garment for sale. See the Bibliography for other resources. An explorative point of view is all that is needed to venture into the world of copying a dress from an inspirational picture. Making a toile also helps. On a quick search on the internet, this pattern was found, which provided a starting point for this project.

Two dresses were made. An early antique china head Huret, Mlle Emily Mathilda is the designee of the antique fabric. Miss Sophie Rose, a reproduction Huret, from Suzanne McBrayer (bisquebeauties.com), is the recipient of a dress using a reproduction fabric.

CREATING A PATTERN The pattern from Image 7 was enlarged 400 percent to get pattern pieces for the front and back. After holding them up to Mlle Emily Mathilda for a cursory look, changes were made to add length, widen shoulder seams, deepen the armhole, plus add extra width on the back opening. Another toile solved some issues. A third toile was made using similar weight fashion fabric. Utilizing a princess seam and enlarging the sleeves worked; the pattern was finalized, and the antique fashion fabric cut.

A paper pattern with no seam allowance was created for the outer sleeve and bretelle. Both were acceptable for a starting point. The under sleeve was a pattern from the book, The Pattern Making Primer.1 Issues noted from the first toile: waist too large, neckline high, upper sleeves too narrow. Because of the inset of the shirred piece in the center front, a princess seam was used on both front and back. The upper sleeve needed revision and the under sleeve lengthened. The bretelle looked good so that pattern piece was used as is.

A separate toile was made for Miss Sophie Rose using a 90 percent copy of the antique doll pattern with no reduction to the sleeves. Another toile made refinements, and the final pattern was generated. Even though it took some time and several toiles, once

finished, an original pattern was produced that can be used to create many dresses for an antique doll or the Dollspart body. If there is a certain angst in cutting out antique fabric, make a bodice from a newer similar fabric that can become a different dress. This helps verify the fitted bodice.

The antique dress uses cartridge pleating; the reproduction dress has double-boxed pleats. For both, turn down the top edge to the 8 inch length and press. Sew a ½ inch center back seam, with a 3 to 3½ inch opening at the top. Finish seam by turning it under and stitching it down. Both dolls have a 7 inch waist with underpinnings. When pleating the top edge of the skirt, leave ½ inch flat on both sides at the back opening for overlap. This gives a finished 8 inch waist measurement. The cartridge pleats were 1⁄8 inch wide. For the reproduction skirt, starting at the center front create five double box pleats, with three to four small pleats on both sides at the back opening. Sew straight tape to the skirt at the waist, leaving an extra ¾ inch tape at both ends to turn under after the bodice is attached.

CUTTING THE BODICE Using a single layer of antique fabric, cut bodice pieces. Place pieces right side together with design lines and cut the second piece. Cut two of the bretelle patterns in the antique fabric, again matching the design. Cut two from the lining fabric for the backing. Cut the bodice front as shown on the pattern. For the Dollspart body, use a scrap of tightly woven cotton fabric for the center front lining.

SEWING THE DRESS The sewing for both dresses is the same with a few exceptions. An Addendum with more instructions was created and is available at aworldofdolls.com The antique bodice was made with an attached lining, hiding all seams, while the reproduction bodice was made by flatlining the fashion fabric and tarlatan. Some instructions are shown on the pattern pieces. SEWING THE SKIRT The skirt for both dolls is 8 inches waist to hem and 35 inches wide. Cut a 9+ inch x 36 inch piece of fashion fabric and lining. Right sides together, sew together with a ¼ inch seam at the hem. Turn and press. Apply trims.

SEWING THE BODICE Mark parallel lines on the fashion fabric. Using pleating tape as a marker, sew 1⁄8 inch stitches across each line parallel to each other to create cartridge pleats. Leave a ¼ inch seam allowance flat on both sides. There will be 5 or 6 rows of parallel stitching. Gather to fit the center front lining pattern.

For both dresses: Sew the center back and center front seams at the shoulder on fashion fabric and separately on lining. Press. Pin fashion fabric to lining, right sides together. Sew up center back and around the neck with a ¼ inch stitching line. Trim. Turn. Press.

Stitch the side front and side back together at the shoulders on both fashion fabric and lining. Press. Staystitch inward curved edge. Slash at intervals. Antique fabric: Make a sandwich with the side front/ back fashion fabric right sides together on the bottom and the side front/back lining on the top. Sew the four pieces together. Open and press seams flat. All seam allowances are now hidden. Sew the fashion fabric side seams and the lining side seams separately. Staystitch sleeve opening.

ADDING THE CORDING Cut a true bias strip 1 inch wide and approximately 45 inches long. This will be used for the bretelles and waist of the antique dress. The reproduction dress only needs a 9 inch length for waistline.

SEWING THE SLEEVES Sew upper sleeves first. See pattern for instructions, add trims as desired. Set in sleeve by hand. On under sleeve, see pattern for instructions. Add trims. Set in sleeve by hand.

Baste cording to right side of skirt tape leaving a ¾ inch extension on each side of center back. Pin top to skirt. Fit to doll and make any adjustments necessary. Trim cording to match center back edge. Turn back fabric edge and waist tape toward each other. Enclose.

Staystitch top and bottom, add tucks, sew back seam. Set in sleeves

FINISHING THE BRETELLES For the antique fabric dress, baste cording to both sides of both bretelles. Press seam allowance toward center. Hand stitch lining inside seam allowance on back. Trim cording to seam allowance. Add trims. The bretelles for the reproduction are stitched on both sides, turned, and pressed.

FINISHING THE DRESS Make bows. Sew three hooks and thread bars on the back opening. Create a matching hat. Mlle Emily Mathilda wears a hat made from a PNB hat form (#309). FINAL THOUGHTS While the focus of this article has been on utilizing antique fabrics to create a unique couture outfit, there are reproductions of antique fabrics also available for use.
