The lights will come on again. Dear Doll Friends, The Corona virus has affected us all and it is with great regret we must inform you that the Ohio National Doll Show will NOT be held this year. We have delayed this decision as long as possible and like all of you, have been hoping for a miracle. Our ďŹ rst concern is the health and safety of all of our friends. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly clear that we cannot move forward with complete conďŹ dence for your well being. Like you we are terribly disappointed and appreciate all of your support and optimism that the show would go on. **Refunds have been issued for the show and special event registration as well as to our dealers. **Hotel reservations made through our room block will be cancelled automatically .... you do NOT need to do anything. You will need to cancel any reservations made by other means such as online sources or other hotels. We are looking to the future and a promising 2021 for all of us. Bébé Francais Though the name Bébé Francais was originally registered in 1891 by Danel et Cie, this Bébé was only later created in 1894-96 by Jumeau after they won the infringement lawsuit against Danel et Cie. Such a sweet face and not frequently seen, this same mold later inspired the creation of the exceptionally rare Mold #225 of the Character Bébés “Series Fantastique” of which very few have emerged. A Good Man appropriate to both during that time. There are also more distinctly male dolls of china made by companies such as KPM (Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur, Berlin). By the 1850s catalogs of companies such as Kestner show images of male paper mache dolls, some of which have molded facial hair and/or hats. Some of the finest wax dolls of the mid-19th century were those depicting royal men. The art and expertise of insetting hair into wax is perhaps best displayed in the beards and moustaches of these dolls. German doll makers made various styles of male doll heads in untinted bisque (so-called Parian) and in bisque into the mid and 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Doll house dolls of the late 19th and early 20th centuries offered perhaps the largest selection of male dolls available on the market, including not only male members of the nuclear family but also soldiers, chauffeurs, sportsmen, aviators, shopkeepers, and a host of other characters. During this same time frame American and European makers of cloth dolls such as Chase, Kathe Kruse, Steiff, and Chad Valley, among others, included male dolls in An early 19th century wooden lady is happy to be escorted by her equally charming wooden male companion.

he cover of the last issue of Antique Doll Collector highlights the Military Portrait dolls of Cuno and Otto Dressel but those dolls notwithstanding, as jazz vocalist Marion Harris first sang in 1919 “A Good Man Is Hard To Find.” This holds true in the world of antique doll collecting today. Although most doll making companies did make male dolls they were generally made in lower numbers and style variations than their female counterparts. This makes the quest all the more rewarding when a good example can be found and added to our collections. Male dolls have been made of all of the various materials used for female dolls through the decades of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. We can see examples of the English wooden dolls which depicted men. Perhaps the most famous among these is the doll representing Lord Clapham which is in the keeping of the Victoria and Albert Museum in England. In the 1840s there were the kinderkopf (child) china dolls, which can be girls or boys as their hairstyle was

Even though the number of female dolls made at any given time outnumber the male dolls offered, for the collector seeking variety in their collection, an escort for their lady dolls, or playmates for the little girl dolls there are still opportunities within the various genres of antique doll collecting to get out and find a good man.

A Barbie Time Capsule 60 Years Later A

s a collector and researcher of the Mattel Barbie doll for 39 of the 50 years I have been on this earth, I like to think that I have seen it all. Seldom does something pop up that I haven’t seen, or have some knowledge about. That was true, until recently, when my friend Bradley Hickes called me about his recent purchase of several reels of film from a collector of vintage movies. Bradley tends to be the Indiana Jones of finding unusual and odd historical Barbie items. The reels he had were marked simply, Barbie doll commercial and when he rolled out a few feet of the film, he felt it was the first Barbie commercial that we had all seen before. Little did he know that he may have stumbled on one of the most significant pieces of early Barbie doll history. If you go to Youtube.com and you type in “First Barbie commercial” you will see, what, until now was thought to be the first commercial. A wonderful singer purrs a tune

familiar to collectors; “Barbie, you’re beautiful, you make me feel, my Barbie doll is really real.” This catchy tune is stuck in my head, and it would go on to be on the “Barbie sings” album. This “First” commercial, as it is called, always presented a few problems for me. It was missing some of the earliest fashions, and contained fashions that are considered to be from the second year of the doll’s production (fashions like Silken flame, and Solo in the Spotlight). I rationalized that perhaps when the early commercial was filmed, these designs were newly created and thus included to give a longer shelf life for the commercial. My other problem was the dolls. Even in black and white, I could tell that the dolls in the commercial were not the “early” dolls like number 1 Barbies. The 1959 number 1 dolls have distinct facial painting and are very recognizable. Perhaps, the evolution

of the doll’s face painting happened faster than I thought, Perhaps the Number 1’s and 2’s were not available and replaced with the new face painting style. But perhaps, I thought, this isn’t the first Barbie commercial. The first person with whom I shared my doubt was my esteemed colleague, A. Glenn Mandeville. His body of work is amazing, researching all kinds of modern dolls including Barbie. Glenn also had an advantage that I didn’t have, he happened to be a child when Barbie was introduced. “It’s not the first commercial” was what he said in response to my concern. He gleefully remembered first seeing the commercial and the excitement of the glamorous new doll. “She even has a charm bracelet” was the significant line in Glenn’s reminiscence of the original commercial. As he told me this, I knew he was on to something, but then I questioned it. Perhaps he remembered seeing the “Resort Set” fashion in the commercial and would discover that it came with a charm bracelet when he saw it in the package. I know that sometimes we remember things differently. But I also reminded myself that my own memory was very sharp at remembering things that had to do with dolls, and I suspected nothing less with Glenn. My friend who purchased the reels of film sent it to me for me to figure out what exactly it was. When it arrived at my house (in the beginning of the pandemic crisis), I emailed my film expert to see if he could convert the film to a digital format that I could watch. I dropped it on his doorstep and it was converted from its 16mm format to digital for me to pick up the next day.

When I plugged it into my computer, I was treated to something I had never seen. The file, at 1 minute and 10 seconds, starts with a “Bumper” of Matty Mattel and Sister Belle. These are the mascots for Mattel with cute voices (voiced by Cecil Roy and Sylvia Meredeth) doing a 10 second introduction and were part of the “Funday Funnies” featuring Saturday morning cartoons. The music from the “Wedding March” starts, and there is Barbie dressed in her Wedding Day set surrounded by tiny roses. The image is very similar to the cover of the 1959 dealer catalog; however, the doll modeling is blonde. The most noticeable thing is her face. Obviously, it is a #1 or #2 Barbie, as you can tell from her face-painting and arched eyebrows. The tulle gown with veil and bouquet is recognizable. A quick switch to the new scene, a hand appears and picks up the doll and says “I suppose you know who Barbie is, she may be your in a few more years,” indicating to a little girl that playing with Barbie would help her grow up and be glamorous and snag a husband. The next brief scene is preparing to change Barbie’s ensemble and the doll is seated in front of a mirror attached to a dresser. The dresser is a piece of the Mattel Modern Furniture. That furniture was Elliott Handler’s concept, a pet project that was manufactured in Japan. Ruth Handler was annoyed when she found out the furniture was scaled to 10-inch

dolls (like Little Miss Revlon, and Cissette) and not Barbie. This is when she discovered that Elliott didn’t think Barbie would succeed, which was a bit of a blow to her ego, but now we know she would have the last laugh. Seeing the Mattel Modern furniture paired with Barbie was a neat visual. Harris Tuchman Productions created this early Barbie commercial. This advertising agency was the first to be headed by a woman, Fran Harris Tuchman. She got her start in 1942 as part of the Women’s Auxiliary Television Technical Staff, aka WATTS. These are the ladies who kept the Chicago station WBKB-TV on the air during World War II, while their male counterparts were overseas. M.G. Lord, author of “Forever Barbie” states in her book that the dolls were kept in a freezer overnight to withstand the heat of the lights when making the commercial. Even though the commercial is black and white, there is a modern energy. The soft glow of the early doll faces wearing the early fashions as they parade down a conveyor belt style runway was brilliantly done, and recognized by the industry that year. Fran Harris Tuchman would receive a “Lulu” award for the Barbie commercial. (Lulus were given to women who excelled in the field of advertising). Mattel knew the power of advertising. They would market directly to the children, running their 30 second to 1-minute spots during Saturday morning cartoons, and on famed children’s programs such as “The Mickey Mouse Club”. Mattel was an early advertiser on the that show, committing to be their sole sponsor at a budget for a year that was more than the company’s net worth. This gamble paid off in revenue well beyond their imagination. Children who saw their products demanded the toys they had seen during the Saturday morning shows.

Retailers would write a large order at the Toy Fair for Mattel Toys, knowing the supporting promotions would help them to move more volume. I continued to watch the commercial as it showed Barbie laying in her original box with the announcer saying “Here’s how you’ll meet Mattel’s new Barbie” and through the magic of stop motion animation, the doll sits up in her box. “A real fashion model doll” is the moniker that rolls off the tongue of the announcer. The commercial continues with the lady’s voice describing each ensemble for the doll as the camera pans from Barbie’s wedge sandals, up over her resort set outfit with her “dark glasses” and then announces that Barbie “Even has a Charm Bracelet.” Glenn had remembered correctly! I was excited to get to share this commercial with him. After 60 years, I think he was just as excited to see it as when he was a kid. We both are glad that this piece of history finally came to the surface, and could be preserved.

The Lovely

Bathing Beauties

of Galluba and Hofmann By Judit Armitstead

t is difficult to resist the feminine charms of the delicate, fine porcelain ladies produced by the German firm of Galluba and Hofmann. Of all the German companies who produced bathing beauties, they are known for producing some of the finest-quality porcelain ladies. Galluba and Hofmann was a renowned porcelain factory located in Ilmenau, Saxony, beginning in 1891 when Hugo Galluba and George Hofmann became partners. During the early 1900s, they were noted for lovely lady figures dressed in stylish upswept mohair wigs and elegant silk clothing and bathing beauties in silk bathing suits or other skimpy attire. The majority of the bathing beauties are freestanding; many in reclining positions and whimsical poses. The Galluba and Hofman company is distinguished for excellent execution of faces and body sculpting especially when one considers the small size of the dolls. Their faces are individually painted by hand; therefore, the same model could have quite a different expression from the next. They are considered dolls and not figurines by collectors as the majority are dressed in fabric clothing and have mohair wigs. Those which sit or recline lend themselves so well to finely-crafted dollhouse furniture. The Galluba and Hofmann feminine portrayals have a strong resemblance to American artist Charles Dana 30

Gibson’s drawings of the Gibson Girl. Charles Dana Gibson conceived the Gibson Girl not from one person; but instead, he created on paper an idealistic beauty from a compilation of actual beautiful ladies known to him. With a long, thin neck, sculptured facial features with downcast eyelids, and grand upswept hairstyle, the Gibson Girl demonstrates the epitome of beauty during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Gibson Girl’s gentle radiance captured the admiration of many during the Edwardian Era. Figure 0 illustrates one of Charles Dana Gibson’s drawings of the Gibson Girl. The Galluba and Hofmann bathing beauties, a term used loosely, were produced in numerous scales. Several scales of dolls are shown in this article, but the primary focus is on those in the 1” scale. Because they are freestanding, many of these enchanting ladies are well suited for dollhouses and room boxes and, for this reason, are coveted by dollhouse collectors. Other collectors enjoy them in simpler settings such as groupings on shelves or in glass cases. Over time, some of these young misses have lost their original outfits. Collectors are thrilled to find those with original costumes, even if they are worn or only remnants remain. Since many ladies have lost their original outfits, it is not uncommon to find them redressed in appropriate clothing made from antique fabrics or lace or without any clothing at all.

Figures 1a and 1b picture a young maiden in 1” scale sitting with legs straight forward crossed at the ankles with hands coming together at the side of her chin. This particular setting truly tells a story as she sits on a German Schneegas lounge and lovingly admires her two little dogs. It would seem as if this stance was purposefully created to be in such a scene. The porcelain dogs are also German made during the same era as the charming lady. She has molded pink tie slippers, a mohair wig with metallic gold headband and a black lace suit.

The superb ballerina in 1” scale in Figure 2a, laying on her back, is taking a casual rest with arms behind her head as if she is contemplating her next dance. She has blue molded ballet slippers and her original net tutu with velvet bodice. She is on a grand boullé sofa made most likely by the J. D. Kestner firm in Germany during the mid1800’s. The close up of her face in Figure 2b shows very full lips and expressive eyes.

At first glance, the fetching 1” scale young woman in Figure 3a looks quite different from the one discussed directly above in 2a and 2b, but in fact, she is the same model with facial features decorated in a different manner and wearing a longer wavy mohair wig. In Figure 3b her beautifully executed face shows thin lips and heavy eye make-up with lowered eyelids executed in a way that makes her face look rather sad. These two examples illustrate what an affect individual handpainted decorating can have on two models from the same mold. Her original costume has been lost over time. FIG. 4a

She lies on an American-made bed from an unknown manufacturer with a high-back headboard and footboard which hold metal brass mesh inserts. The delicate pink silk coverlet and pillow match the molded pink ballet slippers on the lady’s feet. Looking so much like the Gibson Girl, this marvelous 1” scale lady in Figure 4a has the same classic chiseled facial features with open/closed mouth and lowered eyelids. Her legs are molded separately and do not touch each other, an amazing feat of sculpting in such a small size. She wears her worn but original purple silk jersey suit and has delicate molded blue flat shoes which have pointed toes and 2 crossed straps at the ankles. Lying on her side, her unusual pose features her two arms coming together over her head with fingers just about to be interlocked, but not quite as there is a small space between her two hands, another astonishing achievement. Figure 4b shows her divine face and delicate hands with minute pink fingernails. The luxurious, full mohair wig with waves has a lovely bun at the back of her head as shown in Figure 4c. She has been positioned on a delicately carved fretwork German sofa produced from pear wood in the late 1800’s.

Figure 5a shows another astounding 1” scale lady set in a scene which seems to have been meant specifically for this pose. Molded in an unusual position where she is up on her knees, head looking downwards with arms crossed in front, as if to read the book set in front of her. She looks as if she is truly relishing her reading as her expression shows much satisfaction. She is set on an extraordinarily fine early bed most probably made by the German firm J. D. Kestner in the boullé style. The colorful original silk net suit has hints of the rust color of the silk coverlet. The pink one-strap molded slippers and light brown mohair wig compliment this fine creature. Looking upward from below in Figure 5b, one can see her exquisite face.

The curvaceous young woman in 1 ¼” scale in Figure 6a lies on her side. She leans her head onto her left hand while the right hand hovers in front of the left elbow but not touching as there is a slight space between the right hand and the left elbow. Her finely detailed face wears a serene, Mona Lisa smile. Her one-strap blue slippers are molded and she maintains her original upswept mohair wig. The colorful floral stomacher and matching garter are most likely replacements of her lost clothing. She is quite comfortably lying on an early German ornate oak sofa upholstered with red velvet. A playful, lively beauty in 1 1/3” scale with one shapely leg raised is pictured in Figure 7a. There is so much movement and frivolity indicated in this pose. Looking directly at the viewer with a broad smile on her open/ closed mouth, she has the fingers of both hands interlaced within each other supporting her extended leg. Her beautifully executed face is illustrated in Figure 7b and the interlaced fingers behind her leg are shown in Figure 7c. The attractive American pink and gold cast iron sofa, c. 1870, by J. & E. Stevens of Cromwell, Connecticut, is so appropriate for this fine lady. Her somewhat worn silk net suit and molded blue slippers with ties and bows also can be seen.

At 1 ½” scale, this is the largest bather pictured in this article and shown in Figure 8a. This captivating bathing beauty tells a vivid story as she is shading her eyes with her right hand and leaning on her left arm in this great pose! She has been placed on an American early wooden bench which still maintains its original paper label marked: George W. Fearing, Hingham, Mass. With just a little bit of imagination, one could visualize her looking out at the sea while sitting on her wooden bench at the beach with her terry towel draped over the back. Her molded white one-strap slippers are an unusual color. A close-up of her head and upper body in Figure 8b demonstrates the exquisite face, arm and shoulder execution. Additionally, one can clearly see her original brown mohair wig and silk net cap. Figure 8c of her back shows the great modeling of the body and mold numbers can be detected on her derriere.

The lovely 1” scale young lady in Figure 9a is sitting up on a German Schneegas bed with attractive green silk bedding. She is leaning back on both of her slender arms with head tilted to the side and one knee raised higher than the other. She has molded blue one-strap slippers and wears her original mohair wig with a portion of her silk net cap still attached. Although a little bit worn, she still maintains her original silk net suit which shows traces of purple color. Figure 9b illustrates her finely executed facial features with a very full open/closed mouth and detailed pretty blue eyes. The many varieties of Galluba and Hofmann’s lighthearted, coquettish bathing beauties are meant to please and amuse. Their playful countenance and captivating poses can put a smile on anyone’s face

especially when accompanied by appropriate dollhouse furniture and accessories. arm days typically ﬁnd us dreaming of lazy days at the beach, the park, or just sitting in the garden with lemonade and a good book. This summer, however, questions still hang in the air. When will beaches open, and when can we visit with friends? We certainly won’t take barbeques, parades, and outdoor concerts for granted when they do reappear. During the last few worrisome and uncertain months, creativity has helped many of us keep busy at home. Thank goodness for online shopping and social media! With supplies on hand or arriving by mail, we have cooked, sewed, and crafted; then shared it all via the internet. Keenly missing community, we have found new ways to “meet” and bolster our spirits by seeing friendly faces. Because the doll world began to embrace virtual club meetings, special interest groups, online auctions, and entire online conventions before isolation began, we are well equipped to weather this storm in an endless variety of ways. Some of us have been researching and organizing, others have posted photos of favorite dolls, and some of us have been sewing…a lot. Though I felt stuck at home, my mind was free to wander while I stitched. What better place to “travel” in summer than the seashore? Most of us would dearly love a relaxing walk on the beach right now. Dolls aren’t conﬁned to time or space; they can be anywhere, and anyone, at any time. Antique dolls have especially rich stories, having lived through generations of Some days, the shore is breezy! play before coming to us. Imaginative collectors love to dig up these tales and create new ones, so back in time we go, on a virtual vacation by the sea in the mid-1860s. 19th century beaches appeared nothing like today: there was no sunbathing, surfing, or volleyball. Even swimming was a complicated and somewhat scandalous procedure having more to do with health than pleasure. Those who braved the water were often following a doctor’s orders; a dip in the sea was prescribed for all sorts of maladies from hysteria to melancholy, similar to “taking the waters” at spas like Bath in England. Few could swim and absolutely no one wanted to be seen in a bathing costume (which until mid-century was either a chemise or your birthday suit) so “bathing machines” came to the rescue. These were small, wheeled huts which could be driven out into the water, away from prying eyes. Men and women may have had separate swimming areas, but who wanted to take a chance? Inside, women changed into swimwear, then stepped out the back door into the cold water to paddle about for a few minutes. For maximum, if shocking, health benefits, you could also be pushed by a “dipper” into an oncoming wave. Before Britain’s Bank Holiday Act of 1871 which created the first national holidays, visits to the shore were limited to the wealthy. Working folks simply didn’t have days off, and they couldn’t afford to give up wages for unnecessary travel. Coach travel was also difficult and slow, so people kept close to home until mid-century when trains began connecting cities to the shorelines. paintings depict fully dressed people meandering along open shorelines, taking in the lovely views… of the water and each other, of course. After the social season was over in Paris and London, the fashionable world chose watering places to avoid unhealthy heat and smells in the cities, and to show oﬀ their summer costumes. Less populated mid-century beaches still had a natural look, lacking fancy piers, boardwalks, and carnival-style amusements, but within a few decades European and American shorelines were built up to accommodate the millions of visitors who carefully saved their wages all year for a few days by the sea. Several charming early ﬁlms of late Victorians at the seashore which can be found on YouTube and a short documentary called “Beside the Seaside: The Victorians on Holiday” will help you virtually escape with your doll as you sew her this lovely walking costume. 1860s, certain clothing was associated with the beach; it was generally looser and more simply decorated than regular streetwear. Pale cottons were popular, though a surprising number of summer dresses were also made of sheer wool. Other combinations included Zouave jackets worn over light skirts with sashes or cravats and striking Garibaldi-style outﬁts in red and black or aqua and white. Our Violette has chosen a two-tiered natural linen skirt paired with a fringed satin sash the color of the sea. On breezy days, she dons a Spanish jacket with gauntlet sleeves and bows to match her sash. What a pretty picture she makes! Your girl may also enjoy a blanket for sitting on the sand and a pail to gather shells, as Violette has. Above all, however, be sure to protect her fair complexion with a straw hat or parasol, and give her a sketchbook to record her memories for years to come. Safe travels, dear friends!

“A Walk by the Sea” Pattern Instructions A Huret-era costume for the 12.5” jointed resin body

ince I designed this costume during our state’s “stay at home” order, I challenged myself to only use my stash, like a treasure hunt. Amazingly, forgotten items kept turning up, including a lovely antique pompom trim, an inexpensive straw hat, a tiny paper rose, and a handful of feathers. While my trim is unique, you may ﬁnd similar ones online by searching for Venice lace, Cluny lace, or Swiss guipure. I nearly ran out of linen, ending up with mere scraps just a few inches square. I’ve included notes in the skirt section about stretching limited resources in case you want to take on the challenge of sewing from your stash, too!

Materials:

3/8 yd handkerchief linen (main fabric) 3/8 yd batiste (lining) ¼ yd contrast silk satin or tissue taﬀeta 3 yds ¼”-3/8” wide pompom trim 1 skein embroidery ﬂoss to match silk 3 hook and eye sets Needle and matching threads, Frixion pen

5) Place lining and main fabric right sides together. Pin and sew all around the outside edge, leaving 1-1/2” open at center back of neck for turning. Clip the curves and turn through the opening. Carefully poke out front corners and press jacket. 6) Ladder stitch the neck opening closed and baste armscyes so layers don’t shift. 7) Sew front seams of main sleeves and contrast lining separately. Clip curves and press open seam. 8) Place lining and main sleeve fabrics right sides together at the cuﬀ, then sew and press open. Fold the sleeve in half the long way, right sides together. 9) Sew down the back seam of the sleeve, making a tube, and leaving open between dots to create the vent. Press the seam open, including the part left open.

General Instructions

• Seams are ¼” • Suggested chemisette pattern to wear beneath the jacket is “Demi-Season Ensemble” from A French Fashion Doll’s Wardrobe by Louise Hedrick. Reduce the 18” pattern by 85%. • Checked wool hood pattern is available from the author. Email rosewrendolls@gmail.com.

Spanish Jacket

Be sure to cut jacket lining from batiste and sleeve linings from contrast satin. 1) Sew lining and main jacket pieces separately until step 5. Press lining and main fabric seams in opposite directions to reduce bulk. 2) Sew darts and press. 3) Cut 3 tiny clips along the curve of center back pieces, then pin and sew side backs to center backs. The clips will help the curves meet neatly. Press seams ﬂat. 4) Sew the shoulder and side seams, then press.

How to Make Bows

10) Turn sleeve right side out, press, then baste together at the top. Ladderstitch the vent closed. Press cuff area again, then turn up toward top of sleeve. Tack cuff in place with tiny stitches at front seam. “Wings” at back of sleeve do not need to be tacked down. 11) Set sleeve into armscye, placing back seam of sleeve to the side back seam of jacket. Pin, baste, and check fit—sleeve should fit smoothly with no gathers. If the sleeve is a bit too large, sew a gathering thread across the top to help ease it into place. Sew firmly in place, then trim and overcast the raw edges. 12) Sew trim around neckline, cutting pompoms off the trim. Continue sewing trim WITH pompoms around jacket edges, with pompoms hanging just off the edge. I ran two rows of embroidery floss to match the contrast satin through the open weave edge of my trim, using three strands of floss in each row. If your trim doesn’t have an open weave, try embroidering a tiny chain stitch all around the jacket, just above the trim’s edge. In either case, anchor the embroidery threads inside the jacket at the center back of the neck. 13) Sew a hook and eye at center front point, with hook on the right side. 14) Make bows from contrast satin: cut 4 pieces 1-1/2” x 1” (A, the bow) and 4 pieces ¾” x 1.5” (B, the tie).

For each bow, take one of piece A, fold in all edges ¼” and press. Set face down on table, with short edges on top and bottom and long edges on the sides. Fold the 2 shorter edges toward each other so they meet at center back horizontally and whipstitch closed. Sew two vertical rows of gathering stitches in the center of the bow, pull up tight, then anchor stitches to secure. Then take one of piece B, folding in long edges ¼” to meet in center back. Gather a short end, and stitch to center back of bow. Wrap around bow to meet in center back. Trim end, gather, and anchor in place. Do not pull the tie too tightly. Repeat 3 more times to make a total of 4 bows, then sew one at center back just above the trim, one at center front to conceal the hook and eye closure, and one at the top of each sleeve cuﬀ.

Tiered Skirt

Before beginning, cut 2 pieces of linen: 6” x 36” and 4.5” x 36”. Also cut a waistband from linen, 1-1/2” x 8”. Cut batiste 3-1/2” x 36”. If you’re short on linen as I was, you can opt to cut the upper tier slightly shorter and avoid hemming it by cutting a facing from batiste, about 1-1/2” wide. The two pieces can be seamed as narrowly as 1/8”.

Lower Tier

1) Seam together the 6” wide piece of linen and the 3-1/2” wide batiste. Pink the edge, then press toward the linen. Fold skirt in half then again in quarters, press, and mark ½” from the top at the center. Unfold into halves and draw a line from the center to the quarter mark, then cut along this line to make a center dip in the fabric that will help it to ﬁt correctly over hoops. Press under the top edge of the batiste ½”. 2) Hem skirt, turning under ¼” and ½” (3/4” total hem width). Press and sew in place, leaving 2” open at either end.

3) Make a narrow-hemmed placket in the batiste portion of the skirt. Sew center back seam in linen portion of skirt. Press seam open, then refold and ﬁnish hem over the seam. 4) Sew pompom trim to edge of skirt, embellishing with woven ﬂoss or embroidery. Seam edges together in back, pressing open and securing with thread or a tiny dab of glue if needed.

Upper Tier

1) Cut a center “v” from the narrow piece of linen as with lower tier, then turn under ¼” along the top edge and press. 2) Hem or face the lower edge. If self-hemming, turn ¼” twice for a ½” total hem. Leave open 2” at each end. If facing, ﬁrst press one long edge of the batiste ¼” to wrong side, then sew the other long edge to the linen with a narrow seam. Press toward wrong side of linen, and hem stitch in place. 3) Sew back seam 1” up from lower edge, then narrow hem the opening. Press open the seam and overcast to neaten. 4) Trim as for lower tier.

How to Make Cartridge Pleats

Use a strong or doubled thread and secure well. Begin at the center of the skirt and make the first row of stitches very close to the top edge, being sure to sew through all layers. Stitch even gathering stiches about 3/8” apart to the back opening, leaving a tail to help pull the gathers up later. Sew a second row of stitches about 1/8” below these, matching them exactly. Make the same 2 rows from the center out to the other side of the back opening. Working with one side at a time, pull up gathering threads to fit the waistband. Sew the front tip of each pleat to the lower edge of the waistband, sewing through twice for security. Check fit on doll again, being sure to place the skirt over all undergarments as well as the chemisette, then sew on a hook and thread eye closure.

Finishing Skirt

1) Make waistband: Fold in short ends ¼” and press. Fold long edges ¼” and press, then fold again so that folded edges meet. Test ﬁt on doll, then whip open edges together all around. Mark the center point of the waistband. 2) Pin upper and lower tiers together, then cartridge pleat them to the waistband. This is a wonderful way

sash and thread Before beginning, cut waistband 1-1/2” x 8-1/2”, eye loop at bow (A) 2-1/2” x 4”, and center tie (B) 1” x 2” from opposite end contrast satin. Trace two bow streamers onto doubled satin with right sides together, but do not cut out yet. 1) Make waistband: press one short end ¼” toward wrong side. Fold waistband lengthwise with right sides together, then sew together along unfolded short edge, long edge, and across the folded edge—leave folded edge open for turning. Trim corners, turn and press. The seamed edge is the bottom of the waistband. Ladderstitch the open end closed. 2) Make streamers: Sew inside the drawn line with a ¼” seam, leaving top edge open. Cut out streamers, trim corners, turn right side out and press. Place one streamer over another at a slight diagonal. Sew a gathering thread close to the top edge, pull up, and secure. 3) Make bow: follow instructions for jacket bows. 4) Sew streamers to waistband at one short end, near lower edge. Sew bow just above streamers, near middle of waistband. Test waistband ﬁt over all layers of costume, then sew a hook beneath the bow and a thread eye at the other end. 5) Attach fringe to streamer ends. Work with long lengths of embroidery ﬂoss and cut Ends of bow marked in 1/8” increments on right side. One loop ready to pull them as you work to about 1-1/2” length. through and another being stitched on the mark. They will be evened later. Use Frixion pen to mark streamer ends with 1/8” spacing before beginning.

How to Make Fringe

Thread needle with 3 long strands of floss. Bring needle and floss up from back of streamer through to front at the first dot, then go back through from the front, very close to where you came up. Pull floss through until you have just over 1” length hanging from the end and a small loop forms on the front of the streamer. Cut the floss even with hanging end, then pull both ends through the loop. Pull up tight to form a lark’s head knot. If the floss tends to slip, place a dot of water on the loop before you pull it up, and it will remain snug when it dries. When all knots are in place, comb fringe out carefully and iron straight.
