Dear Friends, In honor of the Fortieth anniversary of Doris Leslie Blau Ltd., all proceeds from the sales of this catalogue will be donated to DIFFA in their continuing effort to fight the battle to win the war against HIV/AIDS.
Sincerely,
hirty years ago, as a young designer at Parish-Hadley, I rang up Doris Leslie Blau and made an appointment to look at carpets for a new project. I was given a date and time — one never just showed up! — and arrived with much trepidation to the showroom on East 57th Street. While waiting in the reception room, with the scent of mothballs permeating the air, I was offered a coffee (one always had to wait, as usually there were clients still looking through the amazing inventory). On the wall were photographs of carpets so unusual that I became truly excited over what I was about to see.
T
Finally, I was shown into the showroom and thoroughly looked over by Mrs. Blau, who asked me what I was looking for. Only able to give her the size that was needed (as I knew very little about carpets), she began to open one after another of the most magical, unusual rugs I had ever seen. On that afternoon Mrs. Blau generously shared her knowledge and passion for carpets with me as she would time after time. Over the years Doris Leslie Blau was where I knew I could always find a special carpet, from an ancient Indian Agra to an American Hooked Rug. Just when I thought knew what I wanted, a rug of such beauty and uniqueness was shown to me that I frequently rethought the design of a whole room. As her ad always said, “The Soul of the Apartment is in the Carpet”. For me, Doris Leslie Blau was always the first stop when beginning a new project. One never saw the ordinary at Doris Leslie Blau, but carpets and rugs that would begin weaving the magic of a room. And that magic continues today. Bunny Williams
