A selection of the artist’s works will be offered at auction on Friday, Feb. 24, by Cordier Auctions in Harrisburg. Arthur’s work evolved in style, but he primarily worked in acrylic, oil, and watercolor. He was considered an expressionist or abstractionist. Some of his work could be described as surrealistic.

Arthur’s early artistic education included the institutions Grand Central School of Art and the Artist Student League in New York City, as well as the George P. Ennis School in Eastport, Maine. By the 1940s he was studying art history at Columbia University. Like many artists, his education included working under more established artists. His influence and training came from the likes of

He was most prolific from the 1940s to the 1970s, exhibiting his work in both one-man and group shows. Some of the most notable venues included the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, the Carnegie Museum of Fine Art in Pittsburgh, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art. Several prominent museums have his works in their permanent collections, including The Brooklyn Museum in New York., The Delaware Museum of Art in Wilmington, the AKG Art Museum in Buffalo, N.Y., and The Walker Art Center in

Minneapolis, Minn.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Arthur’s works and style were also published in art and general publications including Time Magazine, Esquire, Art Digest, and American Artist.

Cordier Auctions discovered the collection when hired to sell the estate of Sandra Byham in State College. Since the 1970s, Byham had been working on placing the collection with an institution but was unsuccessful.

Continued for Political Actions Committees. Also, Paul Gibson of Shipping Saint led a discussion on valuable shipping tips.

The PAA also hosted National Auctioneers Association President (and PAA member) Sherm Hostetter, who spoke on Auction Company Management and Growth. His NAA appointee Chris Rasmus of Virginia covered topics such as How to Build a Brand.

Member Jason Reed spoke on Marketing and Analytics, while

2022 President Jamie Shearer shared some valuable “tricks of the trade” regarding communications with potential and current clients.

Member Stephen Turner gave an informative presentation on a currently hot market category, MidCentury Modern items. Seltzer Smokehouse Meats supplied not only a presenter, who spoke about their family-run business, but also brought along sample products, including Lebanon Sweet Bologna.

Of course, this event would not be what it is without generous sponsors. The highest level sponsors included E. R. Munro & Company (Corporate Registration recipient is Kimberly K. Douglass of Kimberly K Auction LLC in Boyertown.

Sponsor) and Platinum sponsors United Merchant Processing Association, Shipping Saint, Shearer Printing & Office Solutions, Sanford Alderfer Real Estate, Lancaster Farming, Bidsquare, and AuctionTime/ AuctionFlex. There were many other sponsors at various levels, all of which are listed on www.PAAuctioneers.org.

Several awards were given out to honor some of those who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have made the industry better for all. Daniel A. Trace of Trace Auction Service in Meadville is the newest inductee into the PAA Hall of Fame. This award is given to an individual based on integrity, honesty, high moral character, acute fairness, and distinction and is bestowed on an auctioneer each year who, over the course of his or her profession, has committed him or herself to fostering excellence in the auction industry. Additionally, the title of Auctioneer of the Year is given to an auctioneer who has shown excellent leadership, high ethical standards, willingness to share with others, participation in community affairs, and outstanding contributions to the PAA and the auction profession.

Annually, the PAA hosts the Pennsylvania Auctioneer Competition Championship at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex coinciding with the PA Farm Show. This year, as always, there were hundreds in attendance and participating in the auction. The competition was held the evening of Jan. 11, highlighting the best auctioneers licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. Of the 17 contestants competing, Brian Burke II of Meshoppen was judged as the overall champion. The runner-up was Shawn Carbaugh of Spring

Grove, and the Rookie (licensed for less than two years) was Spencer Karns of Claysburg. The top female competitor was Dana Balsamo of Princeton, N.J.

This year also marked a significant year in that the PAA held a Champion of Champions Auctioneer Contest. This is a contest held once every five years consisting of past PA Auctioneer Competition Champions. Of the 10 contestants, coming out on top as the Champion of Champions was J. Meryl Stoltzfus of Newport, and runner-up was John Stauffer of Robesonia. In third place was Patrick Morgan of New Holland. Several auction companies were given awards in the firstplace categories within the PAA Advertising and Marketing Contest, including Patrick Morgan Auction Services LLC; Alderfer Auction; Hurley Auctions; Les Longenecker; L & H Auctions; H.K. Keller; Lane Ryan Auctions; Pook and Pook Inc; Ken Geyer Real Estate Auctioneers and Hostetter Auctioneers. The “Best of Show” strictly a judges’ award, was bestowed on Hostetter Auctioneers, who also won the Advertising and Marketing award of “Auctioneer’s Choice,” which was judged and chosen by all auctioneers attending the conference.

Officers for the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association for 2023 include: President Lon Clemmer of Harleysville; President-Elect Thomas Saylor of Felton; Vice President Michael Calvert of Linesville; and Treasurer Robert A. Ensminger of Harrisburg. Jamie Shearer of Downingtown will serve on the PAA Board as the immediate Past President. Kimberly K. Douglass of Boyertown is the executive director for the association.
