Spohn Collection Now Available To Public Ephrata

History Acquired By Young Center

Clarence Spohn has had a lifelong interest in regional history. The author and historian, now residing in a retirement community, began collecting 18th and 19th century books printed at the Ephrata Cloister and in the town of Ephrata in 1967. Along with significant research he conducted over the decades, manuscripts, various artifacts, and books and pamphlets, the Spohn collection was acquired by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College.

Among the group are 195 rare Ephrata books, pamphlets, broadsides, including nearly 70 imprints dating from 1745-1868, and several artifacts. Work has begun to digitize the material to increase access to researchers. This digitization was sponsored by the Hess Archives. So far, 59 rare books have been digitized and made available free online as part of the Hess Archives and Special Collections guide to the Clarence Spohn Collection of Ephrata. Spohn mentioned a visiting researcher from China was recently at the Young Center using one of the books from the collection.
