This Week: Some Things Are Still Underrated

This past weekend, I was out hitting the antiques malls looking for treasures. I saw prices were up on some things and others were still bargains. Nothing new here. There have always been treasures to be found if you open your mind a bit so you don’t need to open your wallet.

My find for the Saturday afternoon of treasure-hunting was a collection of wood block planes that were marked by both the manufacturer and also the woodworker who had used them. I recognized the latter as a noted Carlisle carpenter/cabinetmaker who I had written about in my Masters’ thesis many years ago. The planes were also marked by the maker, which was neat, since several of the factories were located a few blocks from my present office in Philadelphia. And a small number were marked by the Carlisle retailer who sold the planes to the local carpenter a hundred years ago.

I started to collect planes many years ago on the tip of a good friend of mine, Jim Mitchell, who was curator of science and technology at the State Museum in Harrisburg. Jim noted that wooden planes were almost exclusively pre-1900 in age and were often crafted of some of the finest wood with real attention to detail that only came from craftsmanship. With that in mind, over the years, I have purchased interesting planes where I could find them. Emanuel Carpenter, the famed Lancaster plane maker, was always a target of interest for me when I was out. And, of course, there is the elusive retailer marker of Kelker Brothers from Harrisburg, which I have seen but never owned.

The planes that I purchased were around $15-$17, which is exactly what I paid for my first plane nearly 30 years ago. Prices have moved down, and they remain at bargain levels. I am told that in the old days planes were so cheap and undervalued that they were often burned for firewood. Hopefully that is more apocryphal than true. Still, outside of the rare 18th-century makers and those elaborate boxwood and brass examples from gentlemen’s carpenter’s chests, wood planes have remained a real bargain.

My wife was watching TV with me the other night while I was cataloging the planes. I am a big advocate for writing information down on antiques purchases, as memories fade fast. She became fascinated by the different types of planes and soon we were matching rounds and beads on woodwork in the house. She asked if the planes were still useable, and I proceeded to dig out a piece of pine and demonstrate how to use them. The edges were still sharp and the planes quite useable.

So, if you’re looking to interest that young collector, a sampling of wood planes and one of the standard reference guides is a great place to begin in collecting antiques. Collectors can then build upon that interest by acquiring planes from their home towns, unusual planes used for specific trades, or those made by interesting makers.

All in all, a pretty cool topic to collect.

Heritage Auctions made history June 18 when it began bringing to market the Promise Collection, which consists of high-grade Golden Age comic books that haven’t been seen since they were purchased off newsstands in the 1940s.

The Promise Collection is “the highest-quality pedigree collection, book for book, to debut in our hobby in the last 25 years,” says Heritage Auctions’ Senior Vice President Ed Jaster. It made its eagerly anticipated debut during Heritage’s three-day Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction, held June 17, 18, 19.

Over the span of four hours, just 181 comic books sold for a total of $7.1 million. That is a fraction of 5,000-plus comic books that make up the Promise Collection, which will be sold throughout this year and next. About 100 more books from the collection were sold day three. This report is not a recap of all three days. “We’re just blown away,” said Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen moments after the morning session closed. “Every single book was over the top, and deservedly so.”

But Batman met his match on day two, The Phantom Lady. There is no disputing that Matt Baker’s cover to Phantom Lady No. 17, from 1948, is considered one of the most iconic of the Golden Age, in no small part thanks to its inclusion in psychiatrist Fredric Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent. The copy found in the Promise Collection survived not only intact, but at CGC NM+ 9.6 is the highest graded. Bidding on Phantom Lady No. 17 opened at $95,000 during the live auction. Then back and forth the bidding went until it closed at $456,000.

In fact, all 11 issues of Phantom Lady available were huge hits, chief among them the No. 14 graded CGC NM+ 9.6. That highest-graded copy opened the live auction at $7,000 and closed at $90,000.

Sometimes all it takes is a famous and fantastic cover. Look no further than Mask Comics No. 1, published in 1945 and featuring L.B. Cole’s striking artwork that’s as bright as a sunrise. This is the highest-graded copy, which means there is not a better condition copy known than this CGC VF+ 8.5-graded copy that sold for $102,000.

The 1944 Captain America Comics No. 36, graded CGC NM 9.4, was another heroic title on day two. This book, with its iconic Syd Shores cover featuring classic Cap yanking Hitler out of his convertible, opened at $65,000. The bids
