Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century

By Donald-Brian Johnson

“MAD” had gap-toothed goof Alfred E. Neuman. “The New Yorker” has top-hatted dandy Eustace Tilley. And “Punch,” Britain’s long-lived humor magazine, had...well... “Punch.”

This crook-nosed trickster was the cover boy for almost every issue of “Punch,” from its very first, in 1841, to its very last, in 1992. During that 150-year span, Mr. Punch (usually accompanied by his dog Toby), found himself in every sort of whimsical situation, from watering spring flowers with a set of bagpipes, to posing as Sherlock Holmes (with Toby as a nervous suspect). If the situations at times bordered on the cartoonish, so much the better. “Punch” was, after all, the publication that first embodied the term “cartoon.”

Founders Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells, along with co-editor Mark Lemon, saw their magazine’s mission as offering humor laced with a healthy dose of satire. To get that point across, what better choice for a mascot

than Mr. Punch? Even in 1841, he’d already been wreaking havoc for centuries, bringing his unique blend of comic anarchy to puppet shows around the world.

Although introduced in 15th century Italy as the commedia dell’arte figure “Punchinello,” Mr. Punch really came into his own in the mid-1600s, with his debut in England as a glove (hand) puppet. Aided by his wife Judy and a roster of colorful cohorts, Mr. Punch engaged in a variety of boisterous doings. A Punch-and-Judy show was like an episode of “The Three Stooges” on steroids. Mr. Punch (think “Moe”) quarrels with everyone he encounters, his squawking kazoo-like voice courtesy of a mouth device (the “swazzle”) used by the puppeteer. Each short scene usually concluded with “Punch” slapping his puppet co-star of the moment (think long-suffering “Larry” or “Curly”), with his ever-present stick (Yes, that’s right: his “slapstick”).

“Punch” (the puppet show) was fast-paced and episodic, so that passersby viewing street performances could come and go at will. “Punch”

Mr. Punch is previewing the seasons in the 1956 Punch “Almanack,” Publication date, Nov. 7, 1955. Here, Mr. Punch makes his entrance: “Introduction” illustration from the first issue of Punch, July 17, 1841.

Mr. Punch employs a unique watering system in the Aug. 21, 1957, issue.

This is a cartoon from the magazine that made cartoons famous. This one’s by Thelwell, from the July 6, 1953, issue. This is Toby on the spot, and Punch as Sherlock Holmes, Nov. 13, 1957.

Spring (and Mr. Punch) are in the abstract, April 7, 1954.

The Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art

The foundation’s collection is both broad and deep, and the majority of the works have never been exhibited publicly. Among the unusual elements are 70 of Wyeth’s oil paintings, very rare works, principally from the 1930s, when he experimented with the medium before adopting tempera and watercolor as his preferred mediums. These paintings, such as “Fox Grass Below Adams” (1934), currently on view at the Brandywine, reflect prevalent themes, yet their style and approach demonstrate his evolution as an artist over his entire career. Wyeth is best known for his tempera paintings, 48 of which are in the collection, including his 1966 tribute to his wife, Betsy, titled “Maga’s Daughter.” Also included are “Black Hunter” (1938), an early tempera, and Wyeth’s last major painting, “Goodbye” (2008), which has rarely been seen publicly. The collection features over 2,000 of Wyeth’s watercolors, for which he is renowned, many rendered using the “dry brush” technique.

The largest part of the collection are the more than 4,000 drawings: some are finished drawings, some are preparatory drawings and sketches, and some are study pieces for works he would later paint in tempera or watercolor, and many are still in their original sketchbooks. From the fully rendered work in pencil, “My Sister” (1967), to a casual portrait of his father, “Pa Writing at His Desk” (1942), to tempera studies for major paintings such as “That Gentleman Study” (1961), these drawings will provide a vast trove of information that reveal Wyeth’s thought process and experimentation with how to stage or represent different scenes.
