Brandywine River Museum Of Art Announces Reopening For The Holiday Season, Following An Extended Closure Due To Hurricane Ida Flooding
The Brandywine River Museum of Art is pleased to announce it will reopen to the public on Friday, Nov. 26, with the return of the Brandywine Railroad holiday train display and highlights from the permanent collection. The Brandywine has been temporarily closed to the public since Sept. 1, after the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought historic flooding to Chadds Ford and across the Brandywine’s 15-acre campus. While all of the art in the galleries at the Brandywine River Museum of Art was safe and unharmed by the storm, the museum’s lowest level, containing a lecture room, classroom, offices and more, had significant flood damage, in addition to 10 other buildings on the property.
Beginning Nov. 26, the museum will be open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on Christmas day), with the Brandywine’s iconic O-gauge model train display on view through Jan. 9. A holiday favorite since 1972, the Brandywine Railroad offers something for everyone with its dazzling array of both toy and scale model trains made by Lionel, Williams, Atlas, Mike’s Train House, Kline and others. The display features trains running on 2,000 feet of track with more than 1,000 pieces, including locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys that pass through a small village, a farm, factories, and even a carnival and a drive-in movie theater. Interactive components are also incorporated into the display, operated by hands-free foot pedals that allow for further engagement.
Also returning, albeit in a limited capacity this year, will be the Brandywine’s whimsical critter ornaments decorating the holiday trees in the museum’s atrium and also available to purchase during the annual Holiday Critter Sale. Each year since 1971, these distinctive ornaments have been carefully handcrafted by a dedicated group of volunteers using only natural materials such as teasel, pinecones, acorns, eggshells, flowers and seed
Winterthur
Continued from page 5 Strand. “I have really enjoyed working with the board of trustees and the staff over the past several months. The trustees, staff, and our members are a community that is very dedicated to Winterthur’s success. What they want most is to share this wonderful place with our friends and neighbors, and that is an exciting and energizing challenge.”
Strand has enjoyed a long career in horticulture outreach, education, and management. Prior to joining Winterthur, he worked as director of Green Spring Gardens in Fairfax County, Va., from 1998 to 2005, managing its continuing evolution from a private property to a public garden and historic site, and as outreach horticulturist at The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University from 1993 to 1998. Strand earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology from the University of Colorado in 1989 and a master’s degree in Public Horticulture Administration with a certificate in Museum Studies through the Longwood Graduate Program Fellowship of the University of Delaware in 1992.
“The Covid-19 pandemic, recent storm damage on the estate, shifting tastes, changes in school visits, and new technologies all present challenges and opportunities,” noted Strand. He credits the Winterthur staff for their creativity in meeting challenges and embracing new audiences while remaining good stewards of the property and collection. “I am very proud of them, and because of them, I am incredibly optimistic about our future,” continued Strand.
