The Rocky Hill collection.

This walnut gateleg table was among the furnishings of the William Miller house in Avondale, Chester County, Pa., which was built by William Miller (1698-1768) and his wife, Margaret Ann Cane-Emlen (1705-94), soon after their marriage in 1731. It descended through multiple generations of the Miller and Ellicott branches of their family for 255 years and sold privately to Bill Du Pont in 1986. This sale represents the first time that this gateleg table has ever been offered for public sale since it was made in Philadelphia ca. 1730. This is a Lebanon County, Pa., sulfer-inlaid walnut stepback cupboard dated “1770.”

This clock is a very rare and early example of a Pennsylvania German tallcase clock. It is one of four tall-case clocks known with a movement made by Jacob Graff (1729-78) working in Lebanon, Pa., ca. 1750. Here is a rare wrought-iron “Hessian Soldier” keyhole escutcheon, southeastern Pennsylvania, ca. 1770-80. A nearly identical example is at the State Museum (William Penn Memorial Museum) in Harrisburg, Pa.
