settled at Rock Raymond Farm in Chester County. She designated the 350-acre farm and property to be donated to the Brandywine Conservancy after her death in 1996.

Peter Miller exhibited at the prestigious Julien Levy gallery in two one-woman shows in1944 and 1946. She studied under famed Pennsylvania Impressionist Daniel Garber and privately with modernist Arthur Carles for 10 years. Peter and Earle Miller split their personal time between Pennsylvania and their spiritual home in Santa Fe, N.M. Peter was the goddaughter of mystic Edith Warner and San Ildefonso Pueblo Indian, Tilano Montoya; both were known for running “Teahouse at Otowi Bridge,” a small, self-sustaining destination for hungry travelers and sometimes even the families of nearby working scientists of the Manhattan project in Los Alamos.

Peter escaped her high society life to become an artist, immersed herself in the ancient history and ceremonies of the Native Americans, and drew passion and inspiration from these deeply connected friendships. But, she was also friends with the Calders, Henri Matisse, Max Ernst, and all of the surrealists of that time living in New York. Peter Miller’s paintings combine the influences of early modernist painters such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Miro, Fernand Leger, Arthur Carles, and Paul Klee, with Native American symbols, petroglyphs, and ceremonial objects. She was a highly intellectual, independent woman that developed her own style and artistic language. Peter Miller was a spiritual woman who observed the Native American beliefs of honoring nature. At home in Pennsylvania, Peter Miller was a close friend of Philadelphia Museum of Art Director Anne Julie d’Harnoncourt and became a great patron of the museum. Peter and Earle were fortunate to have owned a stunning collection of paintings, including works by Jean Miro, Alexander Calder, and Georges Braques. “Horse, Pipe, and Red Flower” by Joan Miro was one of several paintings given to The Philadelphia Museum of Art by the Millers.

The Gratz Gallery invites everyone to join in the tribute and transformation from a forgotten to an acknowledged woman of American modernism. The exhibition is accompanied by a first ever published monograph on the artist, fully illustrated, with text written by art historian Francis M. Naumann.

Two other important painters from the Philadelphia art scene of the same time period, and students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well, were modernist and surrealist artists Leon Kelly and Leonard Nelson. So it is with great pleasure that the gallery also put together a special selection of works by these three Philadelphia painters in a tribute exhibition called “A Philadelphia Story,” which will be featured at the Philadelphia Antiques Show. Gratz Gallery, in cooperation with art historians and experts Francis Naumann, Martica Sawin, and Sam Hunter, has published a separate, comprehensive, and fully illustrated monograph on each of these three artists. The books will be available for“A Philadelphia Story.”

Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio is located at 5230 Silo Hill Road, Doylestown, Pa. The gallery features 19th and 20th century American Art and offers museum-quality fine art conservation services and custom framing. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment. To learn more, call 215-348-2500 or visit www.gratzgallery.com.

card, which set a record for any type of carded Jawa figure at $36,285 (est. $10,000$20,000).

G.I. Joe is on the rise with collectors, as this auction proved quite decisively. From Hasbro’s 1982 “A Real American Hero” toyline, an AFA-graded 80 NM (archival case) Series 2/20 Back blister card containing a 3.75-inchtall action figure of Commando Snake Eyes more than tripled its high estimate at $18,500. A straight-arm version of the same figure, AFA-graded 85 NM+ (archival case) in a Series 1/9 Back blister card, reached the midpoint of its estimate range at $15,575.

The political memorabilia section was red-hot, with its own record-setting highlights. First and foremost was a James M. Cox/Franklin D. Roosevelt jugate campaign button from the U.S. Presidential election of 1920. Only six Cox/Roosevelt jugates are known to exist in the 1.25-inch size, and of

This “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” Canadian-issue three-pack containing 3.75-inch action figures of Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear/Snowtrooper), AT-AT Driver, and Cloud Car Pilot from Kenner’s 1981 series, AFAgraded 75 QY EX+/NM (archival case) and encapsulated in a Sears-exclusive window box, sold for $42,835.

A rare poster advertising a 1960 concert at the Palace Pier in Toronto, Canada, featuring “the Fabulous Johnny Cash – The Nation’s No 1 Recording Star with the Tennessee Two and Bill Munroe (sic) and the Blue Grass Boys,” sold for $11,160. This James M. Cox/Franklin D. Roosevelt jugate button, 1.25 inches, one of only six known in that size, and one of only three known in this design, the first of its type to reach the marketplace in 40 years, sold for $185,850. It is a world auction record for a pinback button of any type. those six, three are held in the Cox family collection. Two others are prized assets in an East Coast collection. Adding to its rarity, only three of the six known buttons are of the particular design exhibited by Hake’s example, which sold for $185,850. This price far exceeds the $70,092 previous auction record for a pinback of any type, which was set by Hake’s with the sale of a Babe Ruth 1915 American League Champions button in June 2021.

A second political button that created a bidding frenzy was the “mate” to the Cox/Roosevelt button: a 1.25inch jugate depicting 1920s other major presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. “In searching through nearly 20 years of past auction records, we

couldn’t find an example of this button offered for sale anywhere,” stated Winter. Estimated at $5,000-$10,000, the Harding/Coolidge jugate commanded $51,920.

For its March 15 and 16 sale, Hake’s secured several pieces of important, investment-grade art, including the original pen-and-ink cover art for Incredible Hulk #283 comic book, published by Marvel in May 1983. The talent behind the actionpacked image of a rampaging Hulk leading an Avengers charge is the duo of Ed Hannigan (art) and Al Milgrom (inks). With penciled notations and a Marvel copyright inkstamp on verso, the vibrant inkboard swept past its $10,000-$20,000 estimate to land at $33,315. Also easily surpassing expectations, the

An original Sal Trapani and Charles Paris pen-and-ink art for the cover of Metamorpho #7, DC Comics August 1966, showing the superhero Metamorpho emerging from a volcano, sold above high estimate for $25,130. The mate to the Cox/Roosevelt button that opened the sale, this 1.25-inch jugate depicting 1920s other major presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, sold for $51,920, more than five times the high estimate. original Sal Trapani and Charles Paris pen-and-ink art for the cover of Metamorpho #7, DC Comics August 1966, realized $25,130.

Of the many artists represented in the vintage music posters section, Johnny Cash claimed top honors. A rare and colorful poster promoting a 1960 Toronto concert featuring Cash and the Tennessee Two, with Bill Munroe (sic) and the Blue Grass Boys as the opening act, peaked at $11,160 against a $2,000-$5,000 estimate. April Showers Bring May Flowers

Avid gardeners are taught to appreciate the beauty of both annuals and perennials, and a common saying among them is “April showers bring May flowers.” Another that will hopefully prove evident in the Mid-Atlantic is “Spring is just around the corner.” It’s a popular thing to say and hear around this time of year, but one thing many don’t know is where the first rhyme/saying originated. It reaches back to the mid-16th century, although early use of “April showers bring May flowers” perhaps existed even earlier. In 1557, Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings he called “A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry.” In the April husbandry section, he wrote, “Sweet April Showers, Do spring May flowers.” The rhyme was originally a short poem.

Looking ahead to all the beautiful flowers May will bring, The Emporium dealers will decorate the front sale showcase for the month of April with jardinieres, vases and gardening tools to use or to decorate with. The dealers have Roseville, McCoy, Weller, etc. as well as vases of all shapes and sizes for the flowers of spring, summer and fall. The courtyard will be open soon with flowers and items for patios and gardens.

The Emporium offers complimentary snacks to enhance the shopping experience. The multi-dealer shop is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Mondays, with extended hours on Thursdays and Fridays until 7 p.m. The Emporium is located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J.

For further information, call 609-747-8333.

Happy antiquing, and spring is just around the corner.
