rom humble beginnings, the circus grew into the most popular form of entertainment in the United States. Posters and other memorabilia of the iconic entertainment spectacles has always been a favorite with collectors. A special exhibition at The Bard Graduate Center in New York City, is focusing on the impact of the circus on that city. Birdcage hat worn by Felix Adler, ca. 1940-50. Circus World Museum, CWi-2629.

From September 21, 2012, to February 3, 2013, the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture (BGC) presents “Circus and the City: New York, 1793-2010,” an exhibition that uses New York City as a lens through which to explore the extraordinary development and dazzling pageantry of the American circus. Through a wide variety of ephemera, images, and artifacts, the exhibition documents the history of the circus in the city, from the seminal equestrian displays of the late eighteenth century through the iconic late nineteenth-century American railroad circus to the Big Apple Circus of today. By the turn of the twentieth century, New York City was its most important market and the place where cutting-edge circus performances and exhibitions were introduced to the nation. Curated by Matthew Wittmann, a curatorial fellow at the BGC, “Circus and the City: New York, 1793-2010” features more than two hundred objects and images selected from both local and national collections, including the New-York Historical Society, the International Center of Photography, the Somers Historical Society, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the New York State Museum, the Circus World Museum, the Barnum Museum, the Library of Congress, the Witte Museum, and the Shelburne Museum. In the decades that followed, a variety of transitory circuses and menageries sprang up to entertain the burgeoning population. A final section of the exhibition is devoted to the performers who so thrilled New York audiences, featuring the animal trainer Clyde Beatty, the high-wire aerialist Karl Wallenda, the equestrienne May Wirth, and the clown Felix Adler. First Comprehensive Biography Of Self-Taught Artist, Clementine Hunter

SEEKING VINTAGE SPORTS CARDS AND MEMORABILIA

Book Reveals Louisiana Painter’s Impact On Modern Art World, Details Decades-Long Forgery Operation Clementine Hunter (1887-1988) painted every day from the 1930s until several days before her death at age 101. As a cook and domestic servant at Louisiana’s Melrose Plantation, she painted on hundreds of objects available around her - glass snuff bottles, discarded roofing shin-

gles, ironing boards - as well as on canvas. She produced between five and ten thousand paintings, including her most ambitious work, the African House Murals. Scenes of cotton planting and harvesting, washdays, weddings, baptisms, funerals, Saturday night revelry, and zinnias depict her experiences of everyday plantation life. More than a personal record of Hunter’s life, her paint-

ings also reflect the social, material, and cultural aspects of the area’s larger African American community. Drawing on a r c h i v a l research, interviews, personal files, and a close relationship with the artist, Art Shiver and Tom Whitehead offer the first comprehensive biography of this regional self-taught painter, who attracted the attention of the world. The authors trace Hunter’s childhood, her encounters at Melrose with artists and writers, such as Alberta Kinsey and Lyle Saxon, and the role played by eccentric François Mignon, who encouraged and promoted her art. Rare paintings and photographs illustrate Hunter’s creative process and the evolution of her style. The book also provides insight into a decades-long

forgery operation that Whitehead helped uncover. This recent attention reinforced the uniqueness of Hunter’s art and confirmed her place in the international art community, which continues to be inspired by her life and work. T o m Whitehead knew Clementine Hunter personally and has written and spoken widely on the artist. He and Art Shiver co-edited Clementine Hunter: The African House Murals. A professor emeritus of journalism at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, he now serves that university’s president as a consultant on special projects. Art Shiver was introduced to Clementine Hunter by Tom Whitehead in the early 1970s. Following a career in television broadcast news and station management, he continues to write on subjects ranging from poetry to technology. Clementine Hunter, Her Life and Art, by Art Shiver and Tom Whitehead, published by LSU Press, ISBN:978-08071-4878-5. Cloth $36 - ebook available. www.lsupress.org.
