DISCOVERING ART DECO: A YOUNG PERSON’S JOURNEY By Meghan Weatherby, Director of the Art Deco Society of New York
A
Finding Your Design Movement Design is a very complex field, which spans architecture, fashion, decorative arts, interior design, furniture design, and much more. It doesn’t take long for the design novice to realize that every object is a relevant aspect of the design field. This can largely be credited to the rise of the industrial designer in the 1920s and 30s. To further complicate matters, taste continues to evolve; general stylistic preferences relentlessly shift from geometric to curvilinear, elaborate ornamentation to the clean surface, exotic and luxurious materials to inexpensive manmade materials. This is perfectly illustrated in the various design genres that culminate to form what is commonly recognized as Art Deco. Confusingly, even one design movement can have disparate modes within its larger aesthetic. With so many elements that compose each style, it can be difficult, even intimidating, to find a style that appeals to each person’s taste. Once you find a design movement you love, it can be particularly difficult for a young person to find, much less afford, great vintage pieces from that movement. With the growing interest in the distinguished, yet complicated, aesthetic of Art Deco, collecting poses interesting challenges. I fell in love with French Art Deco, a style where major pieces from influential designers can sell for amounts far exceeding what is affordable for someone in their twenties (not to mention the majority of the population).

s a young person, cultivating an interest in design is both exciting and overwhelming. Having just completed a graduate degree in Decorative Arts and Design, I have many of my friends who are interested in various styles of design, ranging from the Gilded Age to Mid Century Modern. Art Deco seems to bridge various design interests and I am finding more and more people my age who share my passion for Art Deco. With such a vast range of historic design styles, why is Art Deco becoming more ubiquitous with today’s twenty and thirty year olds?
A collection of Art Deco Furniture and Decorative Arts objects.
However, this does not mean that genuine Art Deco pieces are unattainable. There are still great finds waiting to be unearthed in flea markets, antique shows and stores, even garage sales. One can always hope to be the lucky person who stumbles upon a great Deco piece at an antique market. Through exploring French Art Deco and the transatlantic relationship of Paris and New York, I found my love of American Art Deco. As my interest in Art Deco has grown I have found it appeals to a broad audience because although it was born in France, it permeated just about every conceivable facet of American life in the 1920s and 1930s. The Rise of the Industrial Designer Many young Deco enthusiasts I run into have found a special niche of Deco design that most interests them. After the lack of official American participation in the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris, the United States realized it must start producing design in the Modern vernacular. Although the term industrial design had been
The Love of Jazz Age Culture In today’s world Art Deco is synonymous with the Jazz Age.Thanks to films like The Great Gatsby, television shows like Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire, the Jazz Age has become a point of interest for an entire generation of young people. Art Deco goes beyond architecture, industrial design and the decorative arts to describe an entire epoch. This has sparked a growing interest in the speakeasy of the prohibition age, the fashion and lifestyle of the flapper, the music of the period and the unrivaled glamour of Jazz Age New York. While there are many young people interested in collecting Art Deco design, young people are often initiated into Art Deco by first exploring the rich Jazz Age culture. In the mind of young people, gangsters, speakeasies and moonshiners of the prohibition era epitomize excitement and intrigue. Many young people enjoy dressing up and participating in Great Gatsby themed events because they enjoy celebrating the glamour of the Jazz Age. Keeping an eye out for dazzling flapper fashion and men’s boater hats has become somewhat habitual for many Deco enthusiasts I meet. While design of the 20s and 30s is interesting to young people, preserving the memory of, and celebrating Jazz Age culture, is the major lure for many.

used since the early 19th century, the 20s and 30s machine age gave rise to the modern industrial designers we know today. In the late 1920s, industrial designers such as Raymond Lowey and Norman Bel Geddes began to focus on scientifically improving the ergonomic functionality of various products while increasing the visual appeal, thus forming the first innately American aesthetic – streamlining. Streamlining transitioned Art Deco from very expensive luxurious pieces produced for the elite upper class, to machine made products that were mass-produced for the middle class. The streamline aesthetic developed products with clean-lined aerodynamic surfaces that imply motion and speed while using materials that lend themselves to inexpensive mass production. Mass production is what allows for so many collectors of Deco radios, cocktail shakers, posters, and Bakelite jewelry. Because Streamline design was used in so many every day products of the period, it is much easier for young people to become passionate collectors of this style.
Example of the smooth surfacematerials used in streamlining. 1930s Diplomat Coffee Set Made by Chase Designed by Walter Von Nesson.
Finding People with Similar Interests For young people interested in Art Deco, finding people who share their passion is key to embracing and enjoying the period. Organizations like the Art Deco Society of New York offer the opportunity to meet many people who also love to explore everything Deco New York has to offer. Having people who share an interest and want to explore great Jazz Age and speakeasy themed venues, makes it much more fun. The Art Deco Society of New York has given me the opportunity to meet members who have fantastic collections of Art Deco, and who have shared insight into how they built their collections. People of all ages are growing more interested in Art Deco because it appeals to each of us in a unique way. The machine age was an exciting time in architecture, interior design, fashion design and industrial design. The excitement of new materials, engineering feats and new aesthetics helped shape modern design and culture through the rest of the twentieth century. It is a time that represents old world glamour as well as modernity. Art Deco in the 20s and 30s seems nostalgic and somehow familiar to those of us in our 20s and 30s.There is simply something for everyone to love.
