Antiques are the ultimate recyclable and have stood the test of time. In our disposable society, it is fortunate that we can still purchase furniture made with pride and loving hands. Glass that is hand blown from all over the world, kitchen items that bring back the nostalgia of pies cooling on the windowsill, biscuits fresh from the oven, and roast beef on Sundays. Remember the old brown crock filled with flowers the colors of spring? Tea and coffee served from delicate china and cookies on a handpainted plate? Antiques take us back to a simpler time when neighbors chatted on the front porch and lemonade was served in an old glass pitcher in the summer. In this high speed world we live in, it is nice to slow down and remember. So grab your best friend, your sister, your husband or your wife and hit the antique trail. Discover the beginnings of a new collection, a great piece of furniture for your home, that lemonade pitcher or whatever catches your eye! See a beautiful credenza and think “I don’t know where to put it? How about holding that big new widescreen TV you just bought. Sit back and collect the raves when your friends see that! Instead of taking the particle board to the dump, you will have an heirloom to pass down to your children. It doesn’t get any better than that. Dress up your kitchen with a collection of old time utensils in a special color, depression glass in a rainbow of colors, advertising tins to hold all those pesky little items, an old cracker tin, an old crock, pie plates, cake plates, and beautiful china cups. Tea never tasted so good! Are you a garden lover? Architectural antiques are the mainstay of your garden. Design a small yard or a woodland setting complete with an antique birdbath or sundial. Love old picket fences? Have a penchant for pots? Wild for weathervanes? The hunt is half the fun! Get started! Use your imagination and anything is possible. These fine antique stores offer the best antiques in the good old USA. They are ready and willing and able to help you achieve the best look for your home, the best gifts for you friends and family, and to make your garden stand out.

Think outside the box - Here are a few suggestions to get you going: • A beautiful handkerchief for the bride (Something old). • A pair of crystal champagne glasses for the wedding toast. • Candlesticks that may start a new family tradition. • Vintage dessert plates (The happy couple will always remember you when they serve from them). • A great birthday gift: A calendar towel or calendar plate with the year on it. • An advertising item with their name on it. • A copy of an old magazine printed the year they were born. • Antique jewelry made with old time attention to detail and quality.

A TIME FOR WARM HEARTS & HOT GUTS THE BEST LITTLE PIG GIG IN TEXAS ELGIN, TEXAS • The Sausage Capital of Texas outdoes itself once again with the 29th Annual Hogeye Festival, celebrating in a small town with a huge appetite for family fun and a tremendous spirit for honoring pigs. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 from 10 a.m until 6 p.m., Elgin goes hog wild for this free family festival. It is a time for family friendly fun and casual feasting in the Sausage Capital of Texas with all the pink pork trimmings this proud central Texas town can root up. THE FESTIVAL FEATURES live music and entertainment on three stages, handmade arts and crafts, children’s activities, a children’s costume pet parade, a carnival, Road Hog Car Show, BBQ Pork Cook-Off, In a Pig’s Eye Dart Contest, Hogalicious Dessert Contest, Cow Patty Bingo, the Pearls Before Swine Art Show, the Over Yonder Film Festival, and great festive food! Free Festival Shuttle available at the Hwy 95 North Park and Ride. What sets this festival apart from so many others is the combination of humor and history. The day begins with the Elgin Sowpremes, our infamous singing group, riding in on “hogs” (Harleys) to serenade the crowd with porky tunes. It sets the stage for a day filled with pig puns, eating sausage on a stick with an appreciation of the real deal, admiring and acquiring handmade arts and crafts, riding a real train, and enjoying the great tunes by local musicians on three stages. Find yourself hanging out on Main Street, a National Register Historic District, with the other little piglets hamming it up. This is a day filled with community spirit and piggy pride, and a unique Texas festival experience that should not be missed. Elgin is located 19 miles east of Austin on Hwy 290. The Hogeye Festival is sponsored by the Elgin Main Street Board, an organization supporting downtown revitalization, the City of Elgin, and underwritten by area businesses. Proceeds from the festival go toward downtown improvement projects ranging from new sidewalks, to beautification. Elgin is a Texas Main Street City and has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a National Main Street Community since 1989. Over the past 25 years more than $13 million has been reinvested in Elgin’s downtown district as a Texas Main Street City!!

COLLECTING a Blessing or a Sickness? by Len Waska

A recent survey showed that 60% of American homes have at least one collection and in many cases it was started by something inherited from a parent or grandparent, like the pretty piece of colored Depression Glass that Grandma used in her kitchen. Many a housewife has sought additional pieces of the same pattern to add to her kitchen like Grandma did. Other commonly collected items are stamps and coins, both of which are encouraged by the U.S. Government by issuing dozens of commemorative stamps and coins every year. People have been collecting for centuries. An 80,000 year old cave in France had what appeared to be a collection of pebbles, and King Tut’s tomb contained a lot of walking sticks. But humans aren’t the only creatures to collect things. While everyone is familiar with “pack rats”, up to 70 other species collect and not just food. American Crows and Northern Ravens are known to collect aluminum foil and brightly colored objects, hamsters in a laboratory chose to hoard glass beads over food, and, not long ago, a lady in Seattle who enjoyed sharing her lunch with crows began putting food in a bird feeder for them. The crows learned to wait for their dinner and then began leaving gifts for her like earrings, beads, Lego pieces and screws.

HISTORY OF COLLECTING In the Middle Ages, the Church collected items believed to have powers, like splinters from the cross, milk from the Virgin Mary and pieces of Moses’ staff. In the early 15th Century, collecting switched from the church to “studios”, private studies filled with books, art , precious objects, silver and gold items, tapestries and leather goods. During the “Age of Discovery”, from 1500 to 1700, advances in science such as the microscope (1590) and the telescope (1608), and innovations in navigation improved travel; and improved printing, like the Gutenburg press, encouraged more people to read. Improved travel and increased reading expanded people’s curiosity and inspired more collecting. In the 16th Century, Prince Rudolf, the nephew of Spain’s King Phillip, became the Holy Roman Emperor in 1575 and got a jump on collecting by inviting artists and craftsmen to his castle to create things, and he hired agents to travel the world to collect things and send them back to his castle in Prague. A few years later, in the early 1600s, the Duke of Buckingham issued a “wish list” to ship’s captains and seamen of things he wanted to own, and he hired Treduscant the Elder to hunt treasures for his collection. Treduscant accumulated his own collection which included a stone chip from John The Baptist’s tomb and a splinter from Christ’s cross along with many other items. This collection formed the Ashmead Museum of Oxford, which is believed to be the first museum. In 1781, Charles Wilson Peale turned his home into a museum to display his 4000 insects, 1600 taxidermied birds, 90 mammals and complete Mastodon skeleton from a site in New York. During the Civil War, displays of antiques from the Colonial Period were used as fund raisers for the war effort, but the American Centennial of 1876 was the turning point in America’s appreciation of the past. After the Industrial Revolution, goods were no longer hand made, but cranked out by machines, and people became nostalgic for old fashioned craftsmanship. The first antique shop opened in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1896 and, by 1904, Boston listed three antique shops in a business directory and by 1924, there were 47. “The Magazine Antiques” was first printed in 1922 and is still being published today. Although it took a few years, the interest in hand crafted items that began with the 1876 Centennial grew into the Arts Craze of the 1920s when people sought American furniture and artifacts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts opened it’s American Wing in 1924. This interest in nostalgia created a new furniture style known as “Colonial Revival”, where the designers mixed parts of various furniture styles of the past 200 years, resulting in furniture with characteristics from Hepplewhite, Duncan Phyfe and Sheraton all on the same piece. Like the Medici and European Royalty, the American wealthy used antiques to display their wealth. J.P. Morgan bought entire collections including DaVinci’s notebook, Shakespeare’s first folios, Catherine The Great’s snuff box and Napoleon’s watch. When Morgan died in 1913, the collection was worth $60 Million dollars. Wealthy Americans were purchasing so many collections from palaces that a British social critic in 1911 wrote “Our finest estates are one by one falling into the hands of American owners. Those moguls, Morgan, Hearst, Mellon and Rockefeller, seem set on denuding Europe of it’s treasures.” Collecting antiques in the 20th Century is “cyclical”, following the nation’s economy and it’s disposable income. It dropped during the Depression and boomed in the 1960s and ‘70s, partly due to Jackie Kennedy decorating the White House with American antiques. In the 1980s, American antiques were appreciating in value at about 1% per month, but the 1990s have been called “The Decade of Collecting”. Noted antiques author, Harry Rinker, who published his own price guide for antiques, said, prior to Ebay in1995, there were fewer than 1500 categories considered to be “collectibles”. Today, there are more than 30,000.

WHY DO PEOPLE COLLECT? You can ask ten collectors why they collect and probably get ten different answers. Some people collect for fun, probably backing up the idea that ”The most important object in a collection is the next one”, the never ending search for that “missing piece”. This may explain why many collectors will sell their collection when it is complete or when that last piece is so rare that it is “beyond reach”. Some people say they collect to have a “controllable world” because many collections take on a life of their own, where one piece is “interesting”, two is a “pair”, three is a “crowd”, four is a “family”, five or more is a “community” and, as the collection grows, it morphs into a “village”, a “world”, and finally a “universe” where the collector is it’s ruler or god. Malcom Forbes said “a collection, any collection, reflects a personality, a certain quality of mind”. One theory behind collecting is that it can deflect against depression and loneliness, but many psychologists paint a much darker reason behind collecting. Sigmund Freud said that women use collecting as a substitute for a mate, and men collect as “conquests”, like climbing a mountain; while other Psychologists say that collecting is an extension used to combat a sense of “nothingness”. Collecting is often confused with “hoarding”, a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or obsessive greed. Probably, the most well known example is Imelda Marcos who had 1060 pairs of shoes, 200 girdles and 500 bras. This is ”hoarding”. In the mid 20th Century, 32 year old Ralph Ellis was committed to a mental institution by his mother because of his voracious collecting of books. When he was released, he continued collecting and, in 1945, he shipped two railroad boxcars containing 65,000 books to the University of Kansas. The difference between “hoarding” and “collecting” is that the hoarder wants “quantity”, while the collector wants “quality”. Earlier in this paragraph, I stated that you could ask ten people why they collect and probably get ten different answers. While reseaching for this article, I ran across a lot more than ten psychologists who had a lot more than ten answers as to why people collect and no two of them agreed, Since the people who claim to know why people do everything can’t even agree with each other, let’s just enjoy our collecting and not worry about why we do it.

Happy Collecting!!

SIXTH ANNUAL PARIS TEXAS ANTIQUE FAIR & WINE FESTIVAL The Paris Texas Antique Fair & Wine Festival is upon us once again! This event was started by Janet Green & her company, Two Rivers Antiques, 6 years ago. It was originally an event at the fairgrounds in Paris, Texas and is now being sponsored by the Paris Downtown Association and is being held at the historic Gibraltar Hotel. It is an honor to be able to hold this event in such a fabulous antique venue. The entry fee for this year will be $5 for the weekend. You will receive a wristband and this will guarantee your entry for both days. The money raised from this event will fund downtown kiosks and way-finding signs for downtown Paris. This year we are excited to announce that in addition to our 30-plus antique vendors we will also be holding a wine festival. We will have ten Texas wine vendors at the event. The wine festival will be a $5 entry fee per day to attend. This fee includes a commemorative glass! The wine tastings are $1 or you may enjoy a glass of wine, on sight, for $5 per glass. You will be able to sample all the wines offered, buy wine by the glass, bottle or case and meet many local wineries that may peak your interest in Texas wines! In addition to this on Friday night, October 7, we will have a Party on the Plaza. This part of the event will allow you to shop late with our local downtown Merchants, sample foods and goodies that they carry in their stores, and at 7 p.m. the live music will start at the fountain. This year’s music is being provided by a local band, The Mixed Society. They play a lively combination of Blues, Funk, and Jazz. Oh, don’t miss the fabulous attraction of the “B’s” and their unique, one of a kind, restored vintage trailers. These ladies have the best time dressing up in their petticoats, boots, cowgirl hats and bustiers! The ladies get together with her trailers at events to help raise funds for a designated charity. You are welcome to tour their trailers and, if you wish, make a small donation to their charity of choice. Please don’t miss this fabulous opportunity to enjoy the Paris Texas Antique Fair. Put this date on your calendar now! October 7th and 8th, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday morning until 6 p.m. Friday evening. Saturday the hours will be 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

NDGA National Glass Museum Glass on display from the Victorian Era (1800’s) up through Mid-Century Modern with the emphasis on the Depression Era. There is a section of children’s dishes, kitchen items, paperweights, lost children pitcher collection, candlestick collection, a case of carnival glass and much, much more! Displays are changed out periodically as new collections are donated. Whether you are an experienced collector, new to the fascinating world of collecting glass or just want to be enthralled by the beauty and history of American glass there is something for everyone. We have a reference library and gift shop as well as seminars. The museum also participates in Wellington’s First Friday each month where merchants invite artists to come into their shops to display their wares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Refreshments are usually served for your enjoyment.
