Azle & Burleson Antique Malls and his wife, Isabelle, have recently opened a new shop! + + + + + Everything in the store is from New England, and everything is old — You won’t find any crafts or candles here. You will find full-size buggies & sleighs, primitive and Victorian furniture, wonderful country smalls and Art Deco treasures, architecturals from weathervanes to tin ceilings to wide pine boards, hardware & tools, a great selection of ephemera & postcards, toys, kitchenware, glass & stoneware, advertising, cats & dogs, early clothing and old worn rugs. Need a 19th-century dog treadmill? We’ve got it. We’re next door to the 16,000-sq. ft. Azle Antique Mall, only 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth.

PRUDENT MALLARD New Orleans Cabinet Maker by Len Waska, Antique Furniture Restoration In the last two editions of ANTIQUING TEXAS, we brought you information about John Henry Belter of New York, one of the best known cabinetmakers of the mid 1800s, who specialized in Rococo Revival furniture. This month, Antiquing Texas brings you information on Prudent Mallard, probably the best known cabinetmaker in New Orleans in the mid 1800s, who , like Belter, also made Rococo Revival furniture. While Belter concentrated on laminated parlor furniture, with a few pieces for other rooms, Mallard made dressers, bookcases, dressing tables and other cabinet furniture, but he is probably best known for his magnificent beds. But first, we must clarify his last name. If you put the emphasis on the last syllable, you get the cabinetmaker. If you emphasize the first syllable you’ll get a duck. This is about the cabinetmaker. Born in 1809 in Sevres, France to Sir Nicholas Mallard of Edinburgh, Scotland and Michael Louise Oger of Paris, Prudent moved to New York around 1829 and is rumored to have worked for Duncan Phyfe, who we told you about in ANTIQUING TEXAS a few months ago. Mallard had an asthmatic condition that was made worse with New York’s weather, so in 1830, he took a steamboat to New Orleans, arriving just as the cotton-based plantation economy started to boom. The quality of his furniture was so good that he has been hailed for years as the leading cabinetmaker of New Orleans’ Golden Antebellum Age, making both Rococo Revival and Renaissance Revival style furniture with elaborate carving. In 1838, he married a local girl, Augustine Beltram, and with a partner whose name has been lost in history, opened a retail store called “Magasin de Meubles” on Royal Street which was the most prestigious location in the city. While he was known for his Rococo furniture, Mallard offered a long list of “fancy goods”, including china, cut glass, porcelain, mirrors, silverware, paintings and textiles. In reviewing the wide variety of items he offered, Mallard may have been a very successful interior decorator as well as a high end retailer, because he understood good design and handled products from notable manufacturers. In spite of over 100 other cabinetmakers and furniture retailers in the area, Mallard prospered and expanded the business. His business was so successful that he acquired his own ships to carry cotton to Europe and return loaded with luxurious furnishings. The same ships also brought back the Rosewood and Mahogany that he used to create his masterful works . By the 1840s and ‘50s, the New Orleans economy was booming and Mallard’s extremely successful business was fueled by his wealthy customers’ insatiable appetite for his spectacular furnishings. By 1860, over half of the United States economy was derived from cotton from the Southern states, which was why the Northern states fought so hard to prevent them from becoming their own nation. If the Confederate states had become independent, the Northern economy would have suffered from a lack of goods to export. The result was that nearly all of the plantations that dotted the Southern countryside were burned to the ground to cut off the South’s source of money to continue the fight for their independence. In the process, most of the elegant furniture in the homes was reduced to ashes. Just like John Henry Belter, who we told you about over the last two months, Mallard’s furniture was too high in quality to compete financially with the mass produced and used furniture that flooded the market after the war that ruined almost all of his clients.
THE MALLARD MYSTERY Although much of his furniture is labeled “MANUFACTURED BY P. MALLARD”, some people have doubts about that. Stephen Harrison, former curator of the Louisiana State Museum, has researched Mallard’s bankruptcy and business liquidation records and neither show any evidence of the massive lathes required to make the furniture. Others say that Mallard probably just contracted out some of the parts to others. Harrison feels that Mallard may have considered that “assembly” constitutes “manufacturing” and that he actually just assembled furniture made by Eastern manufacturers, especially Alexander Roux of New York, who also used paper labels on his furniture. Opponents of the idea say he must have made his own furniture because his own ships brought in the Rosewood and Mahogany he used. A number of tall beds exist that have been attributed to Mallard but often bear the name “C. Lee”. Adding to the mystery is the fact that Charles Lee was a furniture manufacturer in Manchester, Mass. who made magnificent canopy beds once thought to be from Mallard. A close check of Lee’s records show that he shipped furniture to seven New Orleans dealers but Mallard was not one of them.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MALLARD FURNITURE While most of the furniture attributed to Mallard is made of Rosewood, he also used the walnut and mahogany his own ships brought in. Probably the most well known characteristic of his furniture is the “Cabuchon”. It looks like a carved egg and is often called a “Mallard Egg”. Most people think it was Mallard’s trademark, although Alexander Roux used it also. A second characteristic, but once again, not exclusive to Mallard’s work, is the “Barley Twist” pattern used on the front corners of a lot of his cabinets. Most of Mallard’s chests of drawers are generally larger than most others of the period.

MALLARD VALUES In spite of the “did he or didn't he” controversy, there is a large number of Southern furniture collectors who cherish Mallard pieces and pay high prices for them. Prudent Mallard has been credited with inventing the “half tester” bed, a canopy bed where the canopy extends just a short way away from the wall as opposed to the full canopy bed that requires tall posts on all four corners. A half tester bed attributed to Belter sold for $24,780 at a New Orleans auction. When Mallard’s widow, Augusta, passed away in 1889, her will contained instructions for the division of the household furnishings and meticulously identified each piece and who it was to go to. In January of 2005, the family decided to sell many of the pieces and let someone else enjoy and appreciate them for the next century. With the undeniable Mallard provenance, pieces brought high prices. A couple of rare Mallard owned oil paintings by Charles Girout brought $184,000 and $74,000, and a daguerrotype of Mallard and his family brought $3910 and his own bookcase, which had been bequeathed to his son, brought $14,950. The biggest disappointment in the auction was the four piece Rosewood parlor set, consisting of three chairs and a settee. It was so simple and restrained that people couldn’t relate the simple design to the more ornate furniture attributed to Mallard and it failed to bring $5000. However Prudent’s 1849 Colt Pocket pistol brought $7475 and his 1860 Colt Army and 1860 Colt Navy revolvers earned $2350 each. A lot of people were surprised that Mallard’s library didn’t contain any furniture design source books or any information regarding his business.
WHERE TO SEE MALLARD FURNITURE The largest collections of Mallard furniture are in Gallier House at 1132 Royal in New Orleans and in the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans’ Jackson Square, as well as in several private collections throughout the South. Whether or not you believe Prudent Mallard actually made all the furniture attributed to him or not, it is undeniable that he had a huge impact on Rococo Revival furniture in the deep South and collectors of Southern furniture will always pay premium prices for examples of his work. We hope you have enjoyed this article on Prudent Mallard Furniture and, if there are any collectibles you are curious about, we ask that you contact us at lwaska@att.net and we’ll see what we can find for you.

THE BREWSTER CHAIR by Len Waska Antique Furniture Restoration In 1969, an arrogant antique dealer in Maine told a customer “You wouldn’t know a good antique if you saw one”. Besides his extreme arrogance, his biggest mistake was that he made it to a Rhode Island gentleman named Armand LaMontagne, a self-taught artist known for his extremely realistic sculptures of famous athletes. Deciding to put the “expert” in his place, Mr. LaMontagne spent weeks researching Colonial-era furniture from the 1600s. He learned that Great chairs from Colonial America are coveted because only people of high stature owned them. He also learned that two such chairs were made for William Brewster (1566-1643) who was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its spiritual leader, and the chairs were some of the first chairs made in America. At the time of his death, the records show that Brewster owned two chairs. His family donated a chair to the Pilgrim Museum in Plymouth, and other one has never surfaced. What could be more intriguing to an arrogant antique dealer than one of the oldest chairs in the country? Mr. LaMontagne got a picture of the existing Brewster chair and proceeded to make a duplicate. To make sure it was as accurate as possible, he payed careful attention to the tools available in the early 1600s and used materials of the period. He used green Oak that warped as it dried out and wooden pins of the Colonial era to hold elements of the chair together, as nails were practically unheard of at the time. Since a chair that old would show heavy wear to have lasted that many centuries, LaMontagne aged the chair by letting it soak in the ocean for a while, put it in a working smokehouse for a couple weeks, and even used lint from his wife’s cotton curtains when he painted it. He even broke a couple of the turned spindles below the front of the seat like someone would have done to hook their heels while leaning back. When the chair was completed, he had a friend in Maine call the dealer who had been so rude to him and tell the dealer that he had some family antiques he wanted to sell. When the dealer arrived, he glanced at the chair but went to look at another piece. As soon as LaMontagne’s friend left the room, the dealer rushed over to the chair to inspect it closely, and eventually purchased it. The chair changed hands many times and eventually was sold to the Henry Ford Museum in 1970 for $9,000 as a Brewster Great Chair. It wasn’t until 1977 that word got out that the Maine antiques dealer had fallen for a fake Brewster chair and it was proven when x-rays revealed that the drill bit used to make the holes had a modern point, rather than the spoon-shaped bits the Pilgrims had. Deciding to make lemonade out of the lemon, the Ford Museum keeps the chair on display as proof that not all “antiques” are really antique.
CARING FOR FLOOD DAMAGED FURNITURE by Len Waska While a little soaking in water won’t hurt most wood furniture as long as the finish is still intact, the main damage comes from prolonged exposure or submersion. Saving flood damaged furniture is a two step process with the first step being cleaning and drying it as soon as possible, and the second step is waiting for any damage to surface. The first objective is to eliminate the mold and mildew which can have long term effects if left unchecked. Fill a bucket with one quart of household bleach and three quarts of water. Using a sprayer or just a rag soaked in the solution, completely cover all the surfaces of the piece with the solution, not just the parts you can see. Be sure to cover the inside of cabinets as well as the back, sides and bottoms of everything, Turn it over to get to all the surfaces. It is not necessary to soak it because as the solution contacts the mildew or mold, the problem is solved. Be extremely careful to cover every square inch of surface because any small, spot of mold or mildew will continue to grow. The second part is the hardest. Furniture needs to dry out completely before any repairs can be done or even an accurate judgement can be made about the extent of the damage. The best way is for the furniture to dry out slowly and naturally. Don’t try to use a heat source like a propane heater or a hair dryer to speed the process because you are liable to cause long term damage. Good air circulation will help the process. Use fans or blowers and, if possible, move the fans or the furniture to get all parts exposed to the moving air. After three or four days, it may feel dry to you but it’s not over yet. This is the point where many homeowners make a mistake by trying to hurry the insurance company and, if the insurance company is smart, they’ll encourage the homeowner to settle the claim as soon as possible because a smart adjuster knows that all the damage is not visible yet and, once the claim is settled, it’s over. Damage to both the wood and the finish often take more than three weeks to appear and, even then, not all the damage may be apparent, especially to the homeowner or the insurance adjuster. Your best bet is to call a reputable furniture restoration specialist and ask him to provide you with a written proposal for repairing the damage. Don’t accept an appraisal, an evaluation or a “guesstimate”, but a “firm price” that he will charge to repair the damage. With most water damage, the beginning requires fast action to minimize the damage. The second part requires patience. Don’t let anyone rush you through this part.
Most water damaged furniture can be saved if a little care is taken. We here at Antique Furniture Restoration have been saving family heirlooms since 1978. If we can help you, please call us at 361-865-9326.

Calendar of Events • Fall 2017
EVERYDAY: Live Tunes at Gruene Hall • Gruene Hall features live music everyday year ‘round. Most shows are free Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday and Saturday evenings are generally ticketed or cover shows. For band schedule and availability, visit www.GrueneHall.com or call 830-606-1601. FRIDAY AFTERNOONS: Friday Afternoon Club at Gruene Hall • A Gruene Hall tradition, now in its 19th year, where hipsters, oldsters, suits, locals and drifters mix it up to start their weekend rite (pun intended!). OCTOBER 5-8: 31st Annual Gruene Music & Wine Fest: Annual Festival to Donate to Hurricane Harvey in Addition to United Way Gruene Hall, Texas’ Oldest Dance Hall, and KNBT 92.1 FM Radio New Braunfels are excited to present the 31st Annual Gruene Music and Wine Fest, a four day event highlighting the best in Texas wine, food and music. All proceeds from the event will be donated; Sunday’s event proceeds will go exclusively to the United Way of the Coastal Bend to assist in Hurricane Harvey relief while the remainder of the weekend’s proceeds will go to the United Way of Comal County as in years past. Last year, the event raised over $140,000. Additional sponsors this year include Chase Band, New Braunfels HeraldZ eitung, The Grapevine, M&S Engineering and Mission Hill Apartment Homes. “After seeing the devastation throughout the state of Texas, we really wanted to be able to do something to help,” said Gruene Hall owner Pat Molak. “Donating to the United Way of the Coastal Bend will allow some of the proceeds to go directly to cities like Port Aransas, Aransas Pass and Rockport that were hit hard.” Facts on the United Way of the Coastal Bend: 100% of donations will help storm victims. The fund will benefit victims in LOCAL service areas – Nueces, San Patricio and Bee counties, including the towns of Port Aransas, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Gregory, Taft, Beeville, Ingleside-on-the-Bay, etc. Through a simple application process, UW will distribute funds to trusted partners providing relief support to individuals such as food, transportation and housing and rental assistance. UW will mandate that 100% of any funds invested in those partners be used for disaster relief. A portion of the funds will be distributed for emergency needs ASAP. Remaining funds will be invested with partners working on long-term, rebuilding efforts - rebuilding lives and communities - and UW will be here long after federal assistance and emergency agencies have left. United Way of the Coastal Bend is a transparent organization and will provide regular public updates and reports on use of the funds. United Way of the Coastal Bend has earned a four-star rating - the highest score available - from Charity Navigator, an independent assessor of non-profit organizations.
