Come to the country

and ﬁnd antique treasures under the trees and in an historic German Turnverein that has been the center of social activities since 1879. Built to promote physical, spiritual and social life, the Turnverein provided the all male members with a place to practice their sport called Tureining similar to present day chinning the bar. By the 1930’s the practice had ended and the Turnverein became a meeting place on Sundays and hosted social functions such as dances. The 1902 original dance hall is a ﬁne example of construction methods the Germans brought with them from their homeland including a rare arch-type ceiling not typical for structures of this kind and not like others that are still standing. This building could tell us much about the life of the people living along the Fayette and Washington county line. Decendants of the original charter families and members of the community are dedicated to the preservation of this architectural and historic “jewel” so it may continue to serve the community for many years to come. The Turnverein is the perfect setting for La Bahia Antiques Show for dealers and collectors. This year, September 28 to October 6 are the dates for the Show & Sale. Some of the dealers will be setting up outside under the beautiful old trees. These dealers will offer quite a variety of merchandise such as Garden Architectural Items, Painted Furniture, Industrial, Advertising, Shabby Chic, Collectibles and Re-purpose Items and Wagons. Inside the hall, Flow Blue, American Primitives, Victorian, English Antiques, American Linens, Vintage & Estate Jewelry, Elegant Glass, Silver Sets, Toys, Quilts, Collectibles, Repurpose Items & much more will be offered for sale to many of the eager buyers. Porcelain restoration at the show. Those who are looking for a particular item enjoy a country atmosphere, history, and the aroma of wonderful food cooking in the outside kitchen area, and are interested in seeing an unusual architectural building should make plans to visit the La Bahia Show. La Bahia is located 15 miles west of Brenham, Texas on Hwy. 290 W, 1/2 mile left on Texas 237. The location is only 7 miles from Round Top. Since the neighboring towns are also holding antique shows and sales on these same dates, this area is the place to be.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post ofﬁce.in 1968.

The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive ﬁre in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.

COLLECTING WATCH FOBS by Len Waska

Although timekeeping devices have been around for nearly 1000 years, the first ones were very large. As time went by, they were made smaller and by the early 1500s they were small enough to fit in a pocket and they were known as “pocket watches”. It was over 300 more years before they became small enough to be strapped to a person’s wrist. When pocket watches became popular, tailors began making special pockets in clothes that were just large enough to hold the watches and to prevent them from becoming lost in the bottoms of large pockets.Since the watch was completely enveloped in the small “watch pocket”, they were often difficult to pull out, so small devices were attached to them,which hung outside of the watch pocket, allowing the watch to be easily slid out of the pocket to be seen. These early devices were usually pins, chains and fancy links and the user could change them to suit his mood or wearing apparel. While tastes have changed,most clothing nowadays lack watch pockets,although a lot of construction and farm clothes are still made with watch pockets to avoid possible injury while wearing a wrist watch around moving machinery. Around 1870, the idea of leather straps attached to the watches caught on, and it didn’t take people long to realize they could make some kind of metal object that attaches to the end of the leather strap that hangs on the outside of the clothing, like jewelry, that could be attractive but, best of all, it could be cheap advertising! Since most men who worked with heavy equipment or farm machinery wore fobs, it was natural for the companies that made that machinery to put their products on the fobs. Advertising fobs became popular because they were free. As the companies developed new products, a new fob was made and the user had to change out the fob, partly to brag about his new machine. Often, conventions would give away ribbons with medals attached,and the ribbons were soon discarded and the medal added to the watch as a fob.

MATERIALS USED The vast majority of fobs are made of metal that has been struck by a steel die, but many other materials have been used, including gold, silver, plastic, tin, wood, lead and pewter and many fobs have colorful painted areas to make them more attractive.

THE BACK IS IMPORTANT Just like the vase or plate collector who looks at the bottom of the piece to see who made it, fob collectors consider the back side to be almost as important as the front because it often has important information and the maker’s name or trademark.

TO LEARN MORE Although watch fobs are mentioned in a lot of books about jewelry, there has been only one book dedicated exclusively to watch fobs. “COLLECTING WATCH FOBS”, by John Kaduck ,was published in 1973 and had hundreds of pictures of easily found fobs. John amassed his collection over just a few years because almost every one in his book cost him less than $10. All of the pictures in this article came from his book. OCTOBER 4-7: 32nd Annual Gruene Music & Wine Fest is an annual gathering of the best wine, music and food Texas has to offer. The four day festival offers attendees the rare opportunity to try the best Texas-sourced wines, all in one place. Averaging over 100 different Texas wines to try from over 30 different wineries, guests can simply move from one booth to another to find their favorite, instead of driving all over the state. All events throughout the weekend will be 21 and up. Both Gruene Hall and The Grapevine provide stages for great Texas music throughout the weekend. Wine and beer tasting, coupled with great live tunes and delicious food, makes this one great event. Gruene Hall, Texas’ Oldest Dance Hall, and KNBT 92.1 FM Radio New Braunfels are excited to present the 32nd Annual Gruene Music and Wine Fest, a four day event highlighting the best in Texas wine, food and music. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the United Way of the Coastal Bend to assist in Hurricane Harvey relief while the remainder of the weekend’s proceeds will go to the United Way of Comal County. Last year, the event raised over $140,000 United Way, as well as over $30,000 for hurricane disaster relief.
