O Do you like Canton? Do you like Antiquing? Do you like Old, New, Retro, Trendy, Vintage, Recycling, and just PB plain Interesting? Then, visit Ties 2 the Past. We’re a group of dealers providing fun and affordable items AM C that add both style and comfort to your space. RENEWED , Booth #3556 at Ties 2 the past, is a collaboration between friends. We’ve been friends and collectors for more years than either of us want to admit. The first thing you’ll notice when you stop by our booth is that we’re new to the business and probably don’t know what we’re doing. But we had this dream of a small retail business and finally decided to do something about it. We chose T2TP for our venture because we’ve shopped at many antique malls in the North Texas Area and we enjoyed the atmosphere at T2TP. The other dealers have been so welcoming and helpful. So, come check out J&J’s Renewed #3556! We have a mix of antique and almost-antique furniture, jewelry, glassware, clothing, home décor and whatever else catches your eye. Our dealers restock frequently, so there’s always some new or unusual find. We love it here, and so will you. It’s a comfortable, friendly place to shop. Haven’t you left yet? Come on over to Ties 2 the past!! Someone else is taking home the treasure you’ve been looking for Right Now! YD

ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.

IMPERIAL CANDLEWICK In last month’s article in Antiquing Texas, we said of all the things people collect, glassware is the most popular. While hundreds of books have been written about collectible glassware, most cover it by type (Pattern glass, Vaseline glass, Cut glass, Depression, etc.), a lot of them cover particular manufacturers (Fostoria, Fenton, Heisey, Blenko, etc.), some cover certain times periods of a manufacturer’s lifetime (Fenton 1979 to 1985, Fostoria 1944 to 1986, etc.) but very few glass patterns are so popular that they have books dedicated to them alone. Two of these books cover Fostoria’s “American” pattern and Imperial’s “Candlewick”. Last month’s article in Antiquing Texas, covered American and this month we will cover Imperial’s “Candlewick”. In 1884, the town of Bellaire, Ohio was known as “Glass City” because it boasted eleven glass manufacturers, each employing about 100 workers. Bellaire was obviously the place to start a glass company because of the large pool of trained workers and infrastructure. The first glass produced by the Imperial Glass Company in Bellaire was issued in January 1904 and consisted of about twenty pressed pieces, such as butter dishes, cream pitchers, berry bowls and pickle dishes made for the F.W. Woolworth Company. The demand for glassware during World War I resulted in the development of automatic, machine made glass and the low cost retailers switched to the cheaper tumblers and jelly glasses, causing a large drop in Imperial’s business. As time passed, the company survived but, in 1929, when the depression gripped the nation, unable to compete with the cheaper products, Imperial declared bankruptcy. They continued to produce glassware while in receivership but were looking for a “White Knight” to save the company. That hero came in the form of Earl Newton, Imperial’s Chicago sales representative who came to Bellaire and spoke to several groups, convincing them that the company could be saved if it was reorganized. As soon as the reorganization was accomplished, Earl walked into the first stockholder’s meeting with a contract in his pocket from the Quaker Oat’s Company who wanted to boost their own sales by including a free piece of glassware in every box of oats they sold. Needless to say, the stockholders were so pleased,

by Len Waska

they elected Earl Newton as president of the corporation. The Quaker Oats premiums increased Quaker’s bottom line, kept Imperial’s doors open, and eventually became Imperial’s “Cape Cod” pattern. Not wanting to rest on this one accomplishment, Earl Newton kept looking for something else to increase Imperial’s bottom line and, in 1933, while in a New York department store, he bought a piece of glass made in France called “Cannon Ball” that featured a lot of round glass beads. He had a mould maker design a mould that eventually became Imperial’s “Candlewick” line, introduced in 1936. Rumors exist that Candlewick was made earlier than then but a four part “joint mould” was used that left unattractive mould marks on the glass. Ribs were added to cover the marks. Eventually, the “joint moulds” were changed to “blank moulds” that eliminated the vertical lines and the ribs to hide them. In mid-1936, the Wheeling, West Virginia Chamber of Commerce was hosting a “Centennial Celebration” (not to be confused with the Texas Centennial Celebration, which was held for a completely different reason) and Imperial had a booth where they distributed 10,000 brochures introducing the “New Imperial Candlewick Line”. The inside front page of the brochure was dedicated solely to promoting the tradition of the “Candlewick Quilts” that were hand made by American housewives for the past 100 years, implying that this was where the inspiration for the Candlewick glassware came from. After all, who wants to promote a product by saying “Here’s our new design. We stole it from the French”?

(Continued on Page 23)

PAGE 23

The first pieces of Candlewick were produced for Marshall Field and Company of Chicago and the 1936 brochure showed a five piece place setting and listed six sizes of plates, six sizes of nappies, a compote, a cake stand, salad sets, stemware, fancy bowls, a mayonnaise set and sugar and creamer sets. The Candlewick line proved to be the shot in the arm that Imperial needed because their sales in 1937 were just short of one million dollars. The first 1937 catalog listed approximately 50 pieces and tumblers were added in late 1937. World War II stopped imported goods and the post war economy and baby boomer families shifted business to American companies, resulting in one of the largest economic booms in the history of the United States with Candlewick reaching the peak of its popularity in the late 1940s with over 300 pieces available. Although Candlewick was made in over 400 shapes during the 48 years it was produced, like everything else, it was subject to the ever changing tastes of the public and by the late 1970s, only 36 pieces were still being made, and the 1982-83 factory catalog showed only 29 items. By combining several shapes (the mayonnaise set consisted of the bowl, a lid, a ladle and an underplate), the factory listed over 700 pieces and sets, creating a real “challenge” for the serious collector. In its 48 years, Candlewick was made in many variations such as three baskets, five wine sets, five sugar and creamer sets, eleven ash tray sets, thirteen cruets, twenty-six vases, and seventy-one bowls and bowl sets. Among the crystal pieces, some of the most sought after pieces are the large heart-shaped bowl, the twopiece party set, desk calendars, the “mushroom” console set, picture frames, and the small mirrors. COLORS In addition to the crystal, Candlewick was made in twenty different colors, mostly during the early years, but not all pieces were made in colors. For instance, Viennese Blue was made in 1937 and 1938 in 78 pieces; and Ruby Red appeared in eleven pieces between 1937 and 1941, but factory records do not show which pieces were made in each color. Other colors used were Ritz Blue from 1938 to 1941, amber, black, lavender, emerald green, pink, light yellow, milk glass, and Caramel slag. Possibly as a “last ditch” effort to boost sales, in 1977 to 1979, Imperial issued Candlewick pieces in Ultra Blue, nut brown, verde green, and sunshine yellow. The most desired colors are: gold, Ruby red, blue, black and Caramel slag and bring premium prices when found. Ruby Red pieced can run from $250 and up; black pieces range from $125 to $600; Caramel slag costs $100 and up, but the most expensive piece of colored Candlewick is the Golden Glass punch set that runs from $4000 to $6000 if you can find one.

Other Candlewick pieces have been enhanced with fired on gold, blue, green and red beads; silver overlay, gold encrustation, cuttings and etchings, and some hand painting. In 1972, Lenox purchased the Imperial Glass Company and, in 1981, sold it to Arthur Lorch of New York. Mr. Lorch sold it to Robert Stahl in 1982 and that was the year that the last piece of Candlewick was produced. In 1984 the company filed for bankruptcy again and was bought by a joint venture between Lancaster Colony and Consolidated International who liquidated all of the company’s assets in the same month. Candlewick’s moulds were sold to many other glass houses. Mirror Images bought over 200 of them, Boyd Crystal Art Glass bought 18 and Anna Maroon owns 21. LOOK ALIKES AND REPRODUCTIONS In addition to the companies listed above, many other glass houses, realizing how popular Candlewick was, made several pieced with beads. Among them are: Heisey, Anchor Hocking, Bryce Brothers, Seneca Glass, Libbey, Lotus, Dalzell-Viking, and Duncan & Miller. Beaded glass patterns made before Candlewick was designed were Atlas, another pattern from the 1880s, and of course, France’s “Cannon Ball” that provided Earl Newton with the inspiration to create Imperial’s most popular line. FOR MORE INFORMATION Since Candlewick wasn’t really considered a collectible in the 1970s, the first book about it was “Candlewick, the Jewel of Imperial” written by Mary Wetzel in 1981 who issued book 2 in 1985. Both books are now out of print. The only book currently available on Candlewick was written by the late Bob Garrison and his wife Myrna and is available for $32.50 from THE BOOKWORM, P.O. Box 160, Flatonia, Texas, 78941.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.

The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.

281-238-7083 THE BREWSTER CHAIR by Len Waska Antique Furniture Restoration

In 1969, an arrogant antique dealer in Maine told a customer “You wouldn’t know a good antique if you saw one”. Besides his extreme arrogance, his biggest mistake was that he made it to a Rhode Island gentleman named Armand LaMontagne, a self-taught artist known for his extremely realistic sculptures of famous athletes. Deciding to put the “expert” in his place, Mr. LaMontagne spent weeks researching Colonial-era furniture from the 1600s. He learned that Great chairs from Colonial America are coveted because only people of high stature owned them. He also learned that two such chairs were made for William Brewster (1566-1643) who was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its spiritual leader, and the chairs were some of the first chairs made in America. At the time of his death, the records show that Brewster owned two chairs. His family donated a chair to the Pilgrim Museum in Plymouth, and other one has never surfaced. What could be more intriguing to an arrogant antique dealer than one of the oldest chairs in the country? Mr. LaMontagne got a picture of the existing Brewster chair and proceeded to make a duplicate. To make sure it was as accurate as possible, he payed careful attention to the tools available in the early 1600s and used materials of the period. He used green Oak that warped as it dried out and wooden pins of the Colonial era to hold elements of the chair together, as nails were practically unheard of at the time. Since a chair that old would show heavy wear to have lasted that many centuries, LaMontagne aged the chair by letting it soak in the ocean for a while, put it in a working smokehouse for a couple weeks, and even used lint from his wife’s cotton curtains when he painted it. He even broke a couple of the turned spindles below the front of the seat like someone would have done to hook their heels while leaning back. When the chair was completed, he had a friend in Maine call the dealer who had been so rude to him and tell the dealer that he had some family antiques he wanted to sell. When the dealer arrived, he glanced at the chair but went to look at another piece. As soon as LaMontagne’s friend left the room, the dealer rushed over to the chair to inspect it closely, and eventually purchased it. The chair changed hands many times and eventually was sold to the Henry Ford Museum in 1970 for $9,000 as a Brewster Great Chair. It wasn’t until 1977 that word got out that the Maine antiques dealer had fallen for a fake Brewster chair and it was proven when x-rays revealed that the drill bit used to make the holes had a modern point, rather than the spoon-shaped bits the Pilgrims had. Deciding to make lemonade out of the lemon, the Ford Museum keeps the chair on display as proof that not all “antiques” are really antique.
