FOSTORIA AMERICAN GLASSWARE Of all the things people collect, the most collected category is glassware, and the two most collected patterns are Fostoria’s American and Imperial’s Candlewick. Both patterns have very distinguishable features and are fairly easy to find and collect. In this article, we will cover Fostoria’s American and our next article in Antiquing Texas will cover Imperial’s Candlewick. During the 1800s, with the coming of the Industrial Revolution and the settling of the American West, every city and town wanted to create jobs for their citizens, so many of them offered a lot of free incentives to attract potential employers. Today, this is called “Economic Development”. To boost their economy, the city of Fostoria, Ohio dangled free land and free natural gas to anyone who would start a business there and the Fostoria Glass Company opened, pressing molten glass into moulds to produce what is now called “Early American Pattern Glass”. When the gas supply proved to be unreliable, they moved to Moundsville, Virginia. Lasting 99 years, the Fostoria Glass Company made millions of pieces of glass in hundreds of patterns and has had dozens of price guides dedicated to it’s products. In 1901, Phillip Eberling began work as a foreman at the Fostoria Glass Company, but soon proved to be more valuable as a designer after he invented new equipment and methods to produce glassware, and he eventually began designing glassware, including the company’s two most popular patterns. In 1915, Fostoria introduced their American line, designed by Philip Eberling, which was their best seller for 71 years. Now, nearly 100 years after its introduction, this is still one of the most collected glass patterns. Their 1915 catalog listed 95 shapes, a number which evolved through the years, following social interest and trends to eventually consist of 416 pieces, some of which are rare and valuable today. A lot of Fostoria American was sold in England, only there it was called Georgian, a name probably more palatable to the English crowd, especially since the war of 1812, which they lost, had just celebrated its 100th anniversary, and the thought was still fresh in their minds. DATING FOSTORIA AMERICAN Since some of the pieces used the same mould for over 70 years, it is very difficult to date them, and collectors often have to compare them to pieces known to be old. Some of the older pieces have more rounded edges on the cubes and greater brilliance due to the “flame polishing”, and a few pieces (platters and nappies, in particular) have ground bottoms, and some of the toed pieces had the toes ground to assure that all of them touched the surface they were placed on. While most American pieces were used, the collector will occasionally run across a piece bearing its original label. Four different labels were used and can quickly date that particular piece.

AMERICAN COLORS The colored pieces are much easier to date because, until the 1920s, all American was made in crystal only. Colored American was made as follows: Black milk glass - 1924 - 1927 Canary - 1925 - 1926 Spanish, Apricot, Yellow and Autumn Glow Pastel Lusters - 1925 - 1927 Blue, Amber, and Green - 1925 - 1927 Orchid - 1927 - 1928 Azure - 1928 Topaz - 1929 Jadeite - 1930s Pink Crystal - 1950s White Milk Glass - 1953 - 1965 Aqua and Peach Milk Glass - 1957 - 1959 Ruby - 1982 - 1986 According to Leslie Pina, who wrote Fostoria American Line 2056, only nine shapes were issued in Ruby by Fostoria, and five of these have been reproduced by other companies while another author, Sidney Seligson, who wrote the first comprehensive book on Fostoria American, lists 21 known pieces in Ruby. Other colors are known to exist, but are in such limited quantities that they are considered to be pieces made by factory employees “just for the heck of it”, with no factory records even showing that color in the line. Good examples of this are the grey beer mug, the orange five inch nappy and the white speckled 12 ounce footed ice tea. There are no Fostoria factory records showing how many pieces were in each of the colors. REPRODUCTION IN COLOR The Viking Glass Company reproduced the American pattern in pink, light pink and light blue. Most American pieces in colors carry prices three or four times what the price for a similar piece in crystal brings. AMERICAN SHAPES AND VALUES Fostoria American is one of the many patterns that has widely varying prices, depending on the part of the country with dealer’s asking prices in the Western states almost twice those on the East coast. Of the 419 known shapes in American, many of them are simple variations of the same basic piece. For instance, most of the American stemware comes with both round and hex shaped bases and most stems are valued in the $15 to $25 range. Most of the American tumblers also run in the $15 to $25 range with the exception of the three inch tall baby tumbler which, when you can find one, runs from $300 to $500. Handled drinkware, like the cup and saucer sets, also run in the $15 to $25 range, except for the rare, handled, footed lemonade which falls in the $200 to $300 range. Continued on Page 28

Punch bowls are scarce and come in several sizes. The 14 inch, two gallon punch bowl generally sells for $350 to $450, while the 18 inch, three and one half gallon bowl, shown in the original 1915 catalog, runs between $500 and $700. Most American decanters run from $75 to $150 and the water bottle, which is extremely hard to find complete with it's wooden stopper, runs $1400 to $1800. Pitchers come in five sizes and shapes and sell for $50 to $450, while the five quart pitcher, complete with its 16 inch washbowl, will cost the serious collector $3000 to $5000 for the set. Salt and pepper shakers also come in five different sizes and prices, and the cake plates were made with two different tops, with the rounded one selling for $75 to $125 and the square top version selling for $125 to $175. The seven inch salad plates were introduced in 1933 and were available with a crystal or frosted finish. The only other frosted piece made during the line’s 71 history was a small bowl. The 1961 Fostoria American catalog had line drawings of 168 pieces and, by 1982 the “American Giftware” catalog showed only 92 pieces. FOSTORIA LOOK-ALIKES While some of the Fostoria American “look-alikes” are easy to spot, such as the less expensive “Cube” pattern, also developed by Phillip Eberling after he went to work for the Jeanette Glass Company in the 1920s, the biggest problem with identifying American look-alikes is that a good many of them were made by other glass houses, such as Lancaster Colony, and Daizell-Viking, using the original Fostoria moulds and the old Fostoria factory employees with the same care and quality as the originals. Indiana Glass Company makes American Whitehall, which has more pronounced mould marks and thicker and blunter edges. Indiana also makes American look-alikes for the Home Interiors Company, but most pieces are clearly marked.

Genuine Fostoria American nappies can be distinguised from Whitehall’s nappies by looking at the pattern on the bottom. While the Fostoria pieces have 24 pointed rays in the center, the Whitehall pieces have 18 rounded “petals”. The quickest way to tell genuine Fostoria drinkware from all the others comes from Sidney Seligson, author of the first book on Fostoria American, who said, “A good rule of thumb to follow is: if the piece of glass has two mould marks and is a dessert, bowl, vase, shaker, lid, pitcher, plate, or is for drinking, it is not American”. Another general rule is that on genuine Fostoria creamers, the top of the handle is flush with the top of the piece, while the Whitehall look-alike has the handle set down on the body. REFERENCE BOOKS The first book written about the subject is Fostoria American, a Complete Guide, written by the late Sidney Seligson, who passed away just as his fourth edition was ready to go to press. His daughter, Dara Jones, had it published and is having a second printing done at this time. Dara has recently published a pocket price guide for those collectors who already have Sidney’s book and just need price updates. Sidney’s book has pictures of every shape known in the American line, a section on the colors and pieces known in each color, and a section on the look-alikes. Another book is Fostoria American Line 2056, now in its third edition, by Leslie Pina. This book has excellent photographs of over 300 pieces and includes a color section and current prices.
