TEA LEAF IRONSTONE While the history of pottery goes back thousands of years and probably millions of different mixtures of clay and whatever else was locally available, Ironstone was first introduced in 1813 when C.J. Mason of England patented a mixture of clay and iron slag to be used for dinnerware. That combination of ingredients resulted in a product that was more practical because it would stand long moves by sailing vessels, riverboats, covered wagons and those new fangled steam trains, and held up much better during the daily washing process which involved a lot of pieces being dropped by young hands made slippery by lye soap. Because it was so durable, easily cleaned and it’s glaze was safe for food storage, it became extremely popular and by 1850, twelve English firms were making ironstone, but, like everything else during the industrial revolution of the 19th Century, people were used to change and, by the 1880s American housewives had become bored with the same, plain white dishes that had been imported from England for the past sixty five years. The use of tea as a beverage came about by accident around 700 B.C. when the water was unsafe to drink until boiled. According to legend, Chinese Emperor Sheu Nung was having his water boiled when some tea leaves accidentally fell into the water. He liked the aroma and the taste and ordered that all of his drinking water be made this way. Through the years, it became considered “good luck” if a whole tea leaf unfolded in the bottom of your cup. Perhaps this is where the original inspiration came from, but in order to satisfy the housewife’s desire for something different in the way of dinnerware, Anthony Shaw of Burslem, England experimented by decorating a plate with copper lustre bands and leaves. It became an instant hit because, while it was still white and durable, it added a pleasing bit of color without gaudy colors and overpowering designs that distracted the diner from a hard to prepare tasty meal. Originally known as “Lustre Band and Sprig”, it caught on quickly and sold so well that the potters had to increase their production to meet the demand and, by 1900, twenty six English firms and twenty American firms were producing Tea Leaf Ironstone and it was delivered to retailers in 100 pound barrels that held a service for twelve.

A study of all the manufacturers shows that very few of them used the same pattern, possibly to assure that, as the woman of the house added to er dinnerware, she made sure to buy pieces that matched. More than one leaf was used as the model. Among them were: blackberry, wild strawberry, gooseberry, red clover, the coffee plant, currant, hops and teaberry. Some of the early Tea Leaf was decorated in gold, rather than copper luster, but that soon proved to be too expensive. The design was first outlined from an engraved plate, filled in by hand, then glazed and fired. The mark was then covered with a thin coat of copper luster and fired a second time. While early names for the design used in both England and America were “Lustre Band and Sprig”, “Band and Sprig”, “Lustre Band and Spray”, “Edge Line and Spray”, “Lustre Leaf ”, and “Lustre Spray”, collectors of this fine dinnerware finally settled on “Tea Leaf Ironstone” as the correct name. Like so many things of the era, Tea Leaf Ironstone took the world by storm but, by 1910, it had become very commonplace and had lost it’s appeal and the factories ceased production and looked for something else to capture the imagination of the housewife. Tea Leaf was reproduced between 1950 and 1980 by the Hall China Company for Red Leaf, but it failed to ignite the interest it held when it graced the Late Victorian dining tables nearly a century earlier. The best source for information on Tea Leaf is the book entitled “Grandma’s Tea Leaf Ironstone”, now out of print, written by Annise Doring Heavilin in 1981 and last updated in 1996.

Tuesday, November 18: Girls Night Out • Merchants in Comfort are giving women throughout the area a great excuse to get their holiday shopping done early during Girls Night Out on November 18th. Merchants throughout the historic district and along Highway 87 and Highway 27 will welcome shoppers with special holiday ambiance from 4 to 9 PM. Merchants will serve light refreshments and offer special door prizes throughout the evening. Holiday musical entertainment also will be featured. Comfort merchants offer a variety of gift ideas from antiques and folk art to jewelry, clothing, furniture, and Texas-themed items, as well as many one-of-a-kind, locally made items. Saturday, November 29: Christmas in Comfort • One of the area’s most popular holiday events, will draw visitors to the Texas Hill Country for holiday shopping and family fun at the end of November, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The event, which started with a handful of local residents manning a few booths in the historic district, now offers more than 100 art and craft vendors and a full day of holiday activities from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and includes Music, Food Court, Local Shopping, and best of all … the Lighted Night Parade which begins at 7 p.m. (parade route is along the historic district of High St.).
