PYREXbyGLASSWARE Len Waska Last month, Antiquing Texas brought you an article about an affordable collectible that could also be used in everyday service, Anchor Hocking Glassware. This month, we thought we’d bring you an article on another usable and collectible and it’s Pyrex Glassware, a direct competitor of Anchor Hocking glass. Both are plentiful, useful and collectible. If you’ve ever measured milk for pancakes, melted butter for popcorn or just dug into a bowl of popcorn, chances are that you have held a piece of Pyrex glass in your hand. In 1851, Amory Houghton left the wharf business to form Union Glass in Somerville, MA. In 1864, he sold it and bought the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company in Brooklyn, NY and, in 1868, they moved the company to Corning, NY and renamed it the Corning Flint Glass Works, focusing on tableware, thermometer tubes and conventional glassware. In 1875, Corning Glass Works incorporated and concentrated on thermometer tubing, glassware for railroad lanterns and pharmaceutical glassware. In 1897, Corning developed a machine to make thermometer tubing more efficiently, and in 1907 they developed equipment to blow light bulbs for Thomas Edison. Prior to 1908, the colors of railroad signal lamps were not consistent, with the reds being various shades of amber, yellow and orange and the greens came in 32 different shades. Something had to be done for consistency, because, if a railroad engineer misinterpreted the color, accidents happened. In 1908, the Railroad Signal Association accepted Corning’s colors as the standard colors for all American and Canadian railroads. The problem was that, when a hot lantern was struck by a raindrop or a snowflake, the glass shattered. Something needed to be done to avoid the broken lenses that no longer sent signals in color. In 1893, a German chemist named Otto Schott developed a line of clear, low thermal expansion borosilicate glass and called it “Duran”. In 1908, Corning’s Research Director, Eugene Sullivan, who had learned of Schott’s invention while a student in Leipzig, developed a line of low expansion, heat resistant, borosilicate glass to reduce the breakage on railroad lanterns and battery jars. Corning named it “Nonex” for “non-expanding” glass. The problem was that it was not profitable because the replacement railroad lantern lens market dried up. In 1913, Bessie Littleton, the wife of Corning physicist Jessie Littleton, complained that one of her casserole dishes had cracked in the oven. Knowing how well Nonex glass withstood high temperatures, the next day Jessie brought her sawed off bottoms from two Nonex battery jars to try cooking in. Bessie later said the jars cooked food faster and at lower temperatures and allowed her to see it as it cooked. Realizing they had hit upon a winner, Corning removed the lead from the formula for Nonex and filed a patent in early 1915 and called it “Pyrex”. While some people believe the name came from the Greek “pyr” and the Latin “rex”, the truth is they named it because the first pieces made were pie plates, so they just changed the name from Nonex to Pyrex. Pyrex debuted in early 1915 and was marketed as an American produced alternative to Germany’s Duran glass. It was such a big hit that on May 18 of the same year, Boston department store, Jordan Marsh, placed the first order for Pyrex. Although it was expensive for the time, Corning sold four million pieces in the first four years and another 26 million pieces over the next 8 years. When the Great Depression hit, Corning had the same problems as all the other glass companies because their largest expense was the hand blowing so they did the same thing that the Depression Glass companies did, and they switched to machine pressing in 1929. That change allowed them to reduce their retail pricing by 30 to 35%, resulting in a sales increase. In 1936, Corning merged with MacBeth Evans of Charleroi, PA who was making opalware, and produced their lines of Pyrex opalware there until 1998 when they sold the brand to World Kitchen.

MARKETING Pyrex was the first high heat compatible glass of its kind and was successful in terms of both scientificware and kitchenware. It was advertised as being the most versatile cooking option because it heated evenly, actually absorbing and conducting heat, rather than reflecting heat like metal cookware. Its transparency allows the cook to assess the “doneness” without uncovering it, and bread was advertised as rising better and pie crusts are “crispy on both top and bottom”. Other features of Pyrex that appeared in advertisements were that it was able to withstand large temperature changes, it didn’t discolor the food, it didn’t react with the ingredients to change the taste of the food like cast iron does, and it didn’t retain food smells after washing like ceramics or earthenware. During World War II, Pyrex ads stressed that Pyrex saved valuable food by allowing cooking, serving, refrigerator storage and reheating and serving leftovers all from the same utensil. In the late 1930s and 1940s, Corning introduced other products utilizing opaque, glass for bowls and bakeware and Pyrex Flameware for stovetop use. PAGE 23

PYREX GLASSWARE continued PATTERNS Beginning in 1956, Pyrex was offered in 156 different patterns in bowls, casseroles, refrigerator dishes and more. While there is not enough room to list all the patterns, some of them are blue cornflower, crazy daisy, amish butterprint, primary colors, old orchard, spring blossom, woodland, snowflake, square flowers, autumn wheat, butterfly gold, golden pine, blue wheat, spirograph and homestead. In the late 1980s, Pyrex discontinued their line of colorful opalware. Patterns & the date they were introduced can be found at www.pyrexcollector.com/patternsbyyear.php#patterns. The largest piece of glass ever cast was made by Corning for the California Institute of Technology for their Mount Palomar Observatory telescope. It was 200 inches across and weighed 20 Tons. Started in 1931 and finished in 1936, the lens was a replacement for a fused quartz lens that failed. Corning’s first attempt had voids and their second attempt took a year to cool, during which it was almost lost to a flood.

WORLD KITCHEN In 1998, Corning discontinued production of Pyrex to concentrate on scientific glassware, and licensed its United States Pyrex brand name to WORLD KITCHEN LLC who took over the Charleroi, PA plant, and they licensed the European Pyrex business in 1994 to Newell, now owned by a French firm, ARC International, who owns the rights to the name in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

THE FORMULA Although nobody seems to know the exact year that it was done, the formula for Pyrex glass was changed when they switched from borosilicate glass to a less costly and more “environmentally friendly” tempered soda-lime glass. Since World Kitchen obtained the rights to the name, all the glass they have produced in Charleroi, PA has been made using the soda-lime formula. Tempered soda-lime glass, besides being cheaper to produce, is the most common form of bakeware glass and has a higher mechanical strength than borosilicate glass, making it more resistant to breaking when dropped, which appears to be the main cause of breakage, rather than sudden temperature changes. However, the soda-lime glass is not as heat resistant as the borosilicate. Some reasons for the change in formula is the Environmental Protection Agency, who imposed tighter air pollution rules and the need to reduce energy consumption. An Anchor Hocking spokeswoman said the borosilicate glass was phased out in the early 1980s for Anchor Hocking’s line of bakeware. A spokesperson for World Kitchen said U.S. Pyrex has been made of soda-lime for about 60 years, while Corning says they made Pyrex using both soda-lime and borosilicate before selling to World Kitchen. A comparison of 9 X 13 baking dishes shows that the U.S. glass made from the soda-lime mixture sells for about $9, while the borosilicate glass made in Europe costs about $13 in the U.S. and the “Arcusine Elegance” from France costs about $29 here.

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE When Corning produced Pyrex, all pieces had the name in large case letters and when World Kitchen began producing it, they changed the logo to small case letters. Since not all of the Corning Pyrex was made from borosilicate glass, the collector can identify the Borosilicate pieces by a very light blue tint to the glass. This becomes a valuable tip when searching for pieces at garage sales and thrift stores.

DATING BY THE MARKS Early Pyrex had a simple circle with the word “Pyrex” in all capital letters and the Corning Glass Works monograph. From 1919 to 1924 it had the word “patented” above the name, and the date May 27, 1919. In 1945, the Opalware line said Pyrex and abbreviated “T.M. REG” arched above it and “U.S. PAT. OFF.” below it. Around 1950, the symbol for a registered trademark, a letter “R” in a small circle, was placed above the name and “Made in USA” was below it.

BREAKAGE TESTS When the Consumer Product Safety Commission received several complaints of Pyrex shattering at high temperatures, Consumer Reports investigated and found the complainants had used World Kitchen products and incorrectly assumed they had the same high temperature resistance as the earlier borosilicate products. Consumer Reports did their usual “extreme use” tests and heated sand-filled pans to 450 degrees and placed them on wet counter tops. All of the soda-lime glass made by both World Kitchen and Anchor Hocking shattered, while none of the European borosilicate pieces did. However, when heated to 500 degrees, all of the pieces broke except for an old Pyrex measuring cup borrowed from a staff member’s mother. Since almost nothing is baked in pans at 450 or 500 degrees, it is reasonable to assume that any housewife, food service or restaurant can safely use glass bakeware made from tempered soda-lime with a little caution. The only industry adversely affected by the switch from borosilicate glass to tempered soda-lime glass was the Crack Cocaine industry. Turning cocaine into crack requires bringing the solution of water and powdered cocaine to a very high temperature and rapidly cooling it. For years, crack makers used the borosilicate glass. The soda-lime alternative cannot withstand the sudden thermal shock. The crack trade had to switch from measuring cups from Wal Mart to test tubes stolen from labs.

ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware. For further information, contact Len Waska at lwaska@att.net or call at 361-865-9326

NDGA National Glass Museum Glass on display from the Victorian Era (1800’s) up through Mid-Century Modern with the emphasis on the Depression Era. There is a section of children’s dishes, kitchen items, paperweights, lost children pitcher collection, candlestick collection, a case of carnival glass and much, much more! Displays are changed out periodically as new collections are donated. Whether you are an experienced collector, new to the fascinating world of collecting glass or just want to be enthralled by the beauty and history of American glass there is something for everyone. We have a reference library and gift shop as well as seminars. The museum also participates in Wellington’s First Friday each month where merchants invite artists to come into their shops to display their wares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Refreshments are usually served for your enjoyment.

3 GREAT Reasons! Life-Size Nativity Scene • Comfort is home to a full set of Nativity figures that originally were atop the Sears building in San Antonio. When Sears no longer planned to use them, they found their way to Comfort. Today the figures have been fully and beautifully restored and are displayed from Thanksgiving through the New Year in the Park. Christmas Lighting & Decorating Contest • Comfort residents and business owners go all out as they decorate their homes, yards and store fronts for the holidays. Drive through town during the day and especially at night to enjoy the scenes and the lights. Christmas Shopping Made Fun • If you are tired of bucking the crowds in mega malls, come to Comfort when you can shop in comfort. Our town offers a variety of unique shops and galleries where gifts can be found that are pretty, practical and plentiful.
