FIRE KING GLASSWARE by Len Waska While millions of collections exist in the world, 90% of them are of the type that is for display only, where the owner and his friends or museum visitors can view and enjoy them. Very few collectibles can be collected and still used everyday and Fire King glassware is one of those few collectibles. In 1905, Isaac J. Collins headed up the Ohio Flint Glass Company in Lancaster, Ohio and a few years later it was merged with the Lancaster Carbon Company to form the Hocking Glass Company, so named for its location near the Hocking River. In 1937, still suffering from the economic downturn of the Great Depression, Hocking Glass merged with the Anchor Cap and Closure Company to form the Anchor Hocking Glass Company, and in 1987, Anchor Hocking was acquired by the Newell Company. In the early 1940s, Anchor Hocking began to produce a line of low cost, low expansion borosilicate glassware that was ideal for oven use, and they named it Fire King. Unlike most other glass names of the period, Fire King was a brand, not a pattern and it included ovenware, refrigerator containers, dinnerware, mixing bowls and coffee mugs and was made for household use as well as restaurants, schools and the U.S. Military. Like most of the Depression Glass of the period, Fire King pieces were often given away as grocery store premiums inside packages of pantry and cleaning supplies. One of them was a nice, leaf shaped candy dish that was free with the purchase of a package of Junket Quick Fudge Mix. Since Fire King items were utilitarian rather than decorative, and were produced around the clock for 34 years, they are plentiful, attractive, durable and inexpensive and many members of the Baby Boomer generation collect them because they grew up with them and they can re-connect with the past. The durability of Fire King items was emphasized when their advertising said ”Smart Fire King casseroles go from the oven ....... to table ....... to refrigerator without harm to their beauty.”

COLORS The most popular (and expensive) Fire King color is Jade-ite, although the color was not developed by Anchor Hocking, but by the McKee and Jeanette Glass Companies in the 1930s. It is especially popular in Japan where Jade is believed to bring good luck, health and prosperity. In fact, it is so popular in Japan that one American Fire King dealer has his website descriptions in both English and Japanese. Interest in original Jade and Fire King Jade-ite got a boost when Martha Stewart featured the color on her television show, but a re-introduction of Jade-ite in 2000 fell flat when imported pieces were of such low quality that the first shipment was rejected. Beginning collectors need to remember that not all Jade-ite is Fire King and not all Fire King is Jade-ite. Fire King was produced in dozens of colors including Sapphire Blue, a soft blue white called Azurite, Turquoise blue, burgundy, pink which is white glass with a pink overspray, Rose-ite which is actually pink glass and is extremely scarce, white, ivory, peach lustre which is reminiscent of a Carnival Glass color, Ruby Red, Forest Green. The Ruby Red and Forest Green are so popular that Phillip Hopper has written two books dedicated to collecting just these two colors.

FIRED ON COLORS Fire King also produced a line of colors that are fired on over white glass at 1100 degrees and might have been their response to the colors of the popular Fiesta dinnerware. The fired on colors include tangerine, yellow, cobalt, green, orange, pink, brown, dark green, light green, pastel colors, and a speckled pattern that looks like Graniteware. Collectors should be aware that the fired on colors have a tendency to chip off from regular use.

MUGS One of Fire King’s more popular items is their line of mugs which includes advertising almost everything including the Esso Tiger, Niagara Falls Yellowstone Park, the Zodiac series, Disney and Snoopy characters, Davy Crockett, Batman, Hopalong Cassidy and a mug made for a special McDonalds promotion in 1976. To show the wide variety of colors and shapes in the Fire King line of mugs, one collector has 560 different Fire King mugs, none of which have advertising.

OTHER DECORATIONS Besides the solid colors, Fire King items are also available with many decorations including game birds, like the Ruffled Grouse, Canadian Goose, Ring Necked Pheasant, Turkey and Mallard Duck; a lot of floral designs like their Anniversary Rose and Primrose lines, a line of sets with red or black polka dots, and their popular Tom and Jerry punch bowl and cups.

AVAILABILITY Like so many other collectibles, once the Internet came into being, a lot of Fire King items previously thought to be scarce became easy to find and the common items became almost unsaleable. The end result is that collectors can find a lot of Fire King pieces at low prices.

WARNINGS Fire King should be hand washed and never put in automatic dishwashers because the harsh detergents and high temperatures will tend to etch the glass, making it cloudy and may strip off any applied decorations. Since Fire King was made before the invention of the Microwave oven, many collectors advise against microwave use because they used different chemicals in the glass 70 years ago that aren’t used today and we don’t know how they will react in a microwave oven. Other collectors say they have used their Fire King in microwaves for years with no problems.

BEGINNING A COLLECTION The easiest way to start a collection of Fire King glassware is to visit garage sales. You’ll probably find a few pieces at more than “reasonable prices” because it is so common that most people conducting garage sales are not aware of the many hard to find and expensive pieces, and you may run into that square Jade-ite plate that sells for $60, the $200 Burgundy dinner plate or the extremely rare Jade-ite Target ball jug that brings $4000 when you can find one. The museum is near San Antonio, Texas and has 15,000 pieces of their glassware including over 1,000 pitchers. DEPRESSION GLASS After pressed glass replaced china and pottery for everyday table use in the mid-1800’s, glass making became an art form with artisans like Louis Comfort Tiffany and Steuben’s Fred Frederick Carder developing new colors, shapes and techniques almost daily. Interest in Art Glass peaked in the early 20th Century but glassware was still very labor intensive, each piece being made, etched and polished by hand with a lot of attention to detail. This, of course, was expensive and no problem during the “roaring twenties” but became a huge problem when the country was gripped by the Great Depression. Like four small streams that merge to form a large river, four events merged to cause the upheaval in the glass industry during the 1920’s. One factor was the evolution of national advertising where a company could let housewives all across the country know about their products, much like the internet has done for today’s small business. The second factor was the improvement in mechanization and automation that allowed glassware to be quickly mass produced and sold for a small fraction of what the handmade glass sold for. The third factor was the Great Depression which put everything but the cheapest goods out of reach of the average housewife and the fourth factor was the fact that Americans were getting tired of everything being mostly black or white. They wanted color in their lives and Depression Glass met that demand. As the Depression devastated the nation, thousands of companies fought to stay alive and, for many, depression glass was the answer. Costing only pennies, hundreds of businesses could afford to give away pieces of depression glass as premiums for customer’s purchases. Motion picture theaters had “dish night”, and pieces of glass were included in boxes of products like soap powder, Pillsbury Flour, and Mother’s Oats. It was better than Cracker Jack! The end result was that every household in the nation had at least one piece of depression glass and, even though money was tight, the extra dime could buy another piece to add to your table setting or as a gift for a hard working housewife. Depression glass comes in over three dozen variations of pink, green, blue and yellow and has hundreds of complicated patterns, many of which were designed to imitate the hand etched styles of earlier years, but mostly to hide the numerous imperfections in the glass itself. As a result of it’s inexpensive, automated, machine-driven, mass production, depression glass is full of errors both major and minor. Many pieces will “wobble” instead of sitting flat on a surface, will lean to one side, have bubbles in the glass, blobs on the surface or lines called “straw marks”; and the color of two pieces in the same pattern may not match. This is “depression glass” and none of these flaws detract from it’s value or appeal to collectors.

Like all collectibles, depression glass values are dependent on rarity and desirability. Many pieces are plentiful enough that prices are reasonably low, while other pieces are so rare that, when found, they command extremely high prices. An example of the former is Bubble, made by Hocking Glass Co. where a cup and saucer in crystal sells for $3. An example of the latter is Ruba Rhombic, which is so rare that it seldom even appears at glass shows and pieces sell for hundreds of dollars. A problem that beginning collectors need to be aware of are the reproductions on the marketplace. While most patterns have not been reproduced, some have been overrun with reproductions and, as a result, the concerns have driven down prices. Most price guides on depression point out the pieces that have been reproduced. “Mauzy’s Depression Glass” lists almost 170 depression patterns and points out that 27 of them have had some pieces reproduced. The book tells which pieces have been reproduced and how to identify those pieces. One of the most widely reproduced patterns is Madrid which was made in 49 pieces, twelve of which have been reproduced. Several pieces were made for the United States Bicentennial and had a “76” embossed into the mold. These are easy to spot but most reproductions are not that easy to detect. Of all things that people collect, depression glass is the most thoroughly researched, with dozens of price guides written about it. While Hazel Marie Weatherman's first two books, called “Colored Glassware of the Depression Era” covered nearly 1,000 patterns and the second volume is considered to be “the bible” of depression glass and a “must have” for serious collectors, it is out of print and brings a premium price when located. Beginning collectors are advised to get one of the current price guides on depression glass which concentrate on patterns that were available in a “basic setting” consisting of cups, saucers, and plates for everyday table use. The two most popular books are Gene and Kathy Florence’s “Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass” and “Mauzy’s Depression Glass” by Barbara and Jim Mauzy. These two books concentrate on the most popular and sought after patterns and list every known piece in each pattern, their values, and information about the reproduced pieces on the market. Other books on depression glass are geared toward people who collect glass from certain manufacturers or specific color such as green, pink, cobalt, Ruby Red, and Forest Green.

CARING FOR FLOOD DAMAGED FURNITURE Antique Furniture Restoration by Len Waska

While a little soaking in water won’t hurt most wood furniture as long as the finish is still intact, the main damage comes from prolonged exposure or submersion. Saving flood damaged furniture is a two step process with the first step being cleaning and drying it as soon as possible, and the second step is waiting for any damage to surface. The first objective is to eliminate the mold and mildew which can have long term effects if left unchecked. Fill a bucket with one quart of household bleach and three quarts of water. Using a sprayer or just a rag soaked in the solution, completely cover all the surfaces of the piece with the solution, not just the parts you can see. Be sure to cover the inside of cabinets as well as the back, sides and bottoms of everything, Turn it over to get to all the surfaces. It is not necessary to soak it because as the solution contacts the mildew or mold, the problem is solved. Be extremely careful to cover every square inch of surface because any small, spot of mold or mildew will continue to grow. The second part is the hardest. Furniture needs to dry out completely before any repairs can be done or even an accurate judgement can be made about the extent of the damage. The best way is for the furniture to dry out slowly and naturally. Don’t try to use a heat source like a propane heater or a hair dryer to speed the process because you are liable to cause long term damage. Good air circulation will help the process. Use fans or blowers and, if possible, move the fans or the furniture to get all parts exposed to the moving air. After three or four days, it may feel dry to you but it’s not over yet. This is the point where many homeowners make a mistake by trying to hurry the insurance company and, if the insurance company is smart, they’ll encourage the homeowner to settle the claim as soon as possible because a smart adjuster knows that all the damage is not visible yet and, once the claim is settled, it’s over. Damage to both the wood and the finish often take more than three weeks to appear and, even then, not all the damage may be apparent, especially to the homeowner or the insurance adjuster. Your best bet is to call a reputable furniture restoration specialist and ask him to provide you with a written proposal for repairing the damage. Don’t accept an appraisal, an evaluation or a “guesstimate”, but a “firm price” that he will charge to repair the damage. With most water damage, the beginning requires fast action to minimize the damage. The second part requires patience. Don’t let anyone rush you through this part.

DECEMBER 2: 16th Annual Gruene Pony Express Ride • Gruene Historic District will receive a Pony Express rider from the Heritage Trail Ride Association of New Braunfels at 10 a.m. Relay riders carry a “Christmas Greetings” message from the Governor of Texas. A temporary post office will be set up next to Gruene Outfitters in Gruene to cancel stamps for mailing. Bring your holiday cards to have the stamps cancelled with the 2016 commemorative stamp representing Gruene. DECEMBER 2-3: Gruene Christmas Market Days • Nearly 100 vendors offer Christmas gifts, uniquely crafted items and packaged Texas foods. Free admission. DECEMBER 3: Bah Humbug at The Grapevine • It’s Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with an amazing twist - one actor plays all the roles in this powerful tale of hope & compassion! Award-winning stage actor Damian Gillen transforms before your eyes into all those beloved characters...from Scrooge to Tiny Tim, in this magical and imaginative re-telling of the holiday classic!
