The great stores between these pages offer you the finest gifts and holiday must-haves available! This is a time for friends and family and making home the center of all the celebrations. Make this year special with gifts and home accessories that have passed the test of time. Looking for the perfect presentation platter for the "big bird"? How about some vintage candlesticks or serving bowls with character? Glittering crystal glasses (mix patterns for a special look), silver serving spoons, perhaps a spectacular punch bowl to grace the table. Dress up the house with a solid piece of furniture made with loving hands and attention to detail (no particle board here). A dining room table big enough to entertain the whole family, a beautiful credenza to hold the widescreen television, a unique bed for the guest room. How about some vintage ornaments for the tree? Help recycle and achieve the best look for your home and create an heirloom to pass down in your family. Looking for a special gift? What could be more special than adding to a collection of kitchen gadgets, finding the perfect garden accent for the gardener in your life, vintage dessert plates, a spectacular piece of antique jewelry, or starting a new collection? Use your imagination and anything is possible, think outside the box and look at antiques and collectibles with an eye towards finding a different use. Your gift will be appeciated for the thought you put into it and an antique will have a new life. ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware. For further information, contact Len Waska at lwaska@att.net or call at 361-865-9326

HOW MUCH IS YOUR COLLECTION REALLY WORTH? by Len Waska
How many objects are in your collection? Fifty? One Hundred? One Thousand? Do you have any idea how much money you have “invested” in your collection? And do you have a current appraisal? Most collectors feel that, if they don’t insure their collection, they don’t need an appraisal. They couldn’t be more wrong! Whether they realize it or not, most homeowner’s policies cover collections and the only way to get the collection’s “full value” in case of a loss is to have a current appraisal because, since the insurance company’s goal is to cover the insured’s belongings while minimizing their company’s costs, they can be expected to strongly resist unsubstantiated claims. It is estimated that only one in ten collectors has accurate enough records to determine exactly how much was spent assembling the collection, and probably less than one in one hundred has a current appraisal of the collection. There are three main reasons why collectors don’t have their collections appraised. The first one is that they don’t have an adequate list of what they own and don’t feel that they have the time required to develop one. The second is that they don’t want to spend the money to have an appraisal done, and the third reason is they don’t see the need for an appraisal. After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas last year, thousands of collections were lost because the collection was washed away and they had no records to prove that it even existed. Smart collectors will have records of their collection in a digital format and keep an extra copy in a bank vault, at a relative’s home or somewhere else safe. The reason for having your collection appraised regularly is the values are not constant, going up or down depending on the interest in the subject and the nation’s economy. For proof of that, just watch a few episodes of Antiques Roadshow. For the past couple of years, they have been re-running shows recorded several years ago and showing the values at the time the show was originally recorded and the current values. In many cases, the drop in values is shocking! Once a collection exceeds several hundred pieces and the average price per piece is $25 or more, the collector should discipline himself to have an appraisal done every five years. This is easier said than done, but it is possible and the end result could save a fortune in the event of a loss.
SELECTING AN APPRAISER While almost every antique show and flea market has someone who offers “appraisals”, most courts will only recognize appraisals by individuals who have been certified by one of the national schools or organizations. The reason for this is that anyone can look up a value in a price guide but, when the internet came out, collectors started looking up information on the internet and stopped buying the price guides. In the last ten years, so few price guides were bought that of the five largest publishers of price guides, three have gone out of business completely and the other two have drastically cut back on price guides, looking instead for other areas to publish books on. The end result is that almost all price guides are over ten years old and the prices are obsolete. This is why collections should be appraised frequently. Another reason for appraisals is the they are adjusted for the part of the country the collection is located in. For instance, in Michigan, Depression Glass is still a hot collectible, while here in Texas, people are donating it to the National Depression Glass Museum because nobody wants to buy it. Another example is furniture. While people in Maine laugh at Victorian furniture and have no interest in it because they prefer the older 1700s furniture, here in Texas, Victorian furniture is still sought after, and on the West Coast, furniture from the 1920s and 30s brings the best prices there, but is considered almost “too new” for Texas collectors. Obviously, the selling price for the same piece of furniture will differ as one goes across the country and an appraisal will be adjusted for these differences. The largest organizations and schools that certify appraisers are The International Society of Appraisers, the Appraisers Society of America, the Appraisal Institute and the Ashford Institute. While some schools teach the basics of appraising and certify their graduates, others, like the International Society of Appraisers, require continuing education to maintain certification. If you have any expectation of your claim being upheld in court, have your appraisal done by a member of one of these groups. Appraisers can be found in the Yellow ages. The first thing to do when hiring an appraiser is to make sure they are familiar with the items to be appraised. You don’t want your collection of Barbie Dolls to be appraised by someone who only appraises Model A pickup trucks. A couple more important things when selecting an appraiser are knowledge and neutrality. If the appraiser is the dealer you buy from regularly, if the market has gone down, can you trust him to put a lower price on a piece he sold you? He actually has an incentive to put a higher price on it to make himself and the collector look good. You need to find an appraiser skilled in the appraisal craft with a working knowledge of the collecting field. Keep in mind that an appraisal of even a medium sized collection will take many hours and appraisers usually charge from $75 to $125 per hour. In order to keep the appraiser’s time to a minimum, you should do the “Grunt Work” yourself. First, ask the appraiser if there’s a particular way they want the items listed and make a list of your entire collection following that format with your suggested evaluation. If it is done on a computer, put it on a thumb drive or a disk for safekeeping. Once you have finished listing your collection, arrange the pieces on a table, the floor or any surface in the same order that you have them on the list and have the appraiser inspect them all. If there’s a problem in court, one of the first things the appraiser will be asked is “Did you personally inspect each object?” A statement to that effect must be included in the appraisal cover letter. The appraiser will inspect the objects to determine if the description and condition reports are accurate. He then begins the process of price and market research, adjusting the collector’s evaluation. Note: Do not trust someone who claims they can appraise an object from a photo or a video. Besides not being able to say they inspected it personally, unseen flaws or defects can greatly affect the value. Even automobile body repair shops, who physically inspect the damage, have a “weasel clause” called “hidden damages”. This allows them to increase the cost of the repair for items they may have missed. There’s is an old saying that “The attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client”. A collector is not capable of appraising his own collection without outside help because he is not neutral. The values he assigns are “wish” prices, ie, what he hopes to get when he sells the collection, rather than a reflection of the “real world” values. Now that you have read about the importance of appraisals, what are you going to do? Ninety nine point nine per cent of you will do nothing. Congratulations to the one tenth of one per cent who will actually be prepared in case a tornado or another hurricane visit Texas.

“TEXAS” PATTERN GLASS by Len Waska
The first commercial venture in the American colonies was the glass industry, producing drinking vessels and windows. At the time, all the glass producers had to rely on their lung power to blow every piece of glass except the windows, but, in 1827, Enoch Robinson, a carpenter at the New England Glass Company in Cambridge, Mass. developed a process where molten glass could be poured into wooden molds and pressed to produce beautiful pieces of glass with intricate patterns. Obviously, the hot glass soon destroyed the wooden molds to the point where they had to be replaced, but American Ingenuity came through and the wooden molds were replaced by cast iron ones with the patterns carefully chiseled into them in reverse. The only problem was that very intricate cast iron molds were very expensive. It is said that an extremely detailed mold could cost as much as $1000, but, if one considers the low wage rates of the time, that price seems unlikely because, since the average worker was making only about $7.50 a week, nobody could afford such expensive glass. While the process of blowing glass came to America from Europe, the process of pressing glass in moulds went to Europe from America. It is rumored that European glass houses would sell “seconds”, or slightly defective pieces, while American houses refused to lower their standards and would re-melt the defective pieces to be made into flawless ones. It is estimated that almost 3500 different patterns were made in America. In the trade, the antique pressed glass is called “Early American Pattern Glass”, “Pattern Glass”, “Pressed Glass” or simply “EAPG”. Since almost all glass is pressed, but not necessarily in patterns, the names are sometimes confusing. In fact, only the glass made before World War II is called “Pattern Glass”. By the late 1800s, sales of pattern glass slumped a bit as tastes trended toward the Opalware produced by C.F. Monroe and his competitors. Since several states had been admitted into the Union in the late 1800s, the United States Glass Company in 1897 and ‘98 decided to try to capitalize on the events by naming patterns after different states. The move immediately improved sales as everyone wanted to buy the pattern named after “their” state. Prophetically, they named patterns for Alaska and Hawaii 60 years before they even became states. In all, thirty-eight states had patterns named after them although, several years ago, a couple ladies decided that naming the states was such a great idea that they arbitrarily named existing patterns after several more states, although only the original thirty-eight states patterns are recognized by dealers and serious collectors as the “real” States Patterns. It is thought that the idea of naming glass patterns after states is what inspired the United States Government, in 1907, to start naming the Navy’s newest battleships after states. The seven new battleships were named: The Illinois, The Louisiana, The Maryland, The Ohio, The Kentucky and The Missouri and the battleship Texas, which was launched in 1912. If the name of this publication was “ANTIQUING WASHINGTON D.C.”, we would concentrate on the Washington D.C. pattern, except there was never one made for Washington D.C. However, since you are reading this in ANTIQUING TEXAS, we’ll discuss the TEXAS pattern. The Texas Pattern, known as the U.S. Glass Company’s pattern 15,067, was made at their factory "K" in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Also called “Loops with Stippled Panels”, it was developed in the 1890s and re-issued in 1907. It is found in clear, and clear with a rose stain and sometimes gilded. Clear with a ruby stain, or any other color, is considered to be extremely rare. It was made in 63 different shapes with the rose stained pieces commanding approximately twice the price in clear. The individual creamer and open sugar bowl have been reproduced by two companies in clear and several other colors. The State of Texas purchased thousands of pieces to use for State Dinners and other important occasions, making several of the serving pieces extremely difficult to find.

VALUES Like any other item whose interest is regional rather than national, pieces of the Texas pattern are ·much more expensive here in Texas than they are in Massachusetts, and the opposite is true because very few Texans collect the Massachusetts pattern. This is both good news and bad news. The good news is that Texas pieces are probably really cheap in Massachusetts. The bad news is that you’ll probably be looking for years before you find a piece there. But more good news is that they probably don’t know what it is, so, if you find a piece, it ought to be really cheap!.A quick check on Ebay shows several of the smaller, more common pieces for sale at prices reasonable enough for a beginning collector. Note that are two other patterns called Texas Bullseye and Texas Star that often show up on Ebay. These were not made by the U.S. Glass Company as part of their States Patterns and are not the “real” Texas pattern sought by collectors. For more information, pick up a copy of “Early American Pattern Glass 1850-1910”, by Bill Jenks and Jerry Luna, published in 1990. In 2002, Bill Jenks teamed up with Darryl Reilly to write “Early American Pattern Glass Collector's Identification and Price Guide”. In it, they list all 63 pieces of the Texas pattern and give the values for pieces in both clear and clear with the rose blush. In the twelve years between publishing the two books, they show the prices for the Texas pattern doubling and, in some cases, tripling , and a recent check of Ebay shows that the prices are still pretty close to the ones shown in their 2002 book, so the values shown with the pictures reflect those prices.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.
The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.
Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.

Comfort! A Holiday Get-Away! Shopping, Entertainment, Christmas Lights & More! Who remembers as kids, driving around town to look at Christmas lights? It can be a big deal, cars filled with the same ‘Ohhh’s and ‘Ahhhh’s that greet fireworks on the 4th of July! Not only do the residents and businesses of Comfort go all out in creating impressive decorations and light displays for the holidays, the Comfort Chamber sponsors a Christmas Lighting & Decorating contest. It is with no lack of pride to find a winning sign in front of one’s home or business. Viewing will be optimal mid-month through Christmas. You don’t have to wait until dark, however, to come to Comfort. Make a day of it, or several. The shops downtown will be cheerfully arrayed for the holidays. Comfort offers three galleries, along with antique stores and unique shops for those out-of-the ordinary gifts. Live music can be found at the local wineries, tasting rooms and other ‘spirited’ establishments. Local B & Bs and guest houses offer lodging. The life-size Nativity figures are on display at Comfort Park through the end of the year. So, plan a visit to Comfort – you won’t be disappointed.
You can always find Comfort in Texas! Office Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. 630 Front Street 830-995-3131
