DUNCAN PHYFE FURNITURE by Len Waska Furniture restorers in and around Texas reﬁnish a large number of pieces of Duncan Phyfe style furniture,

including us at Antique Furniture Restoration, and we wondered how much people actually know about Mr. Phyfe and the style that bears his name. While there are many manufacturers of high quality furniture, Duncan Phyfe is one of the most respected names in the history of furniture making. Born in 1768 near Loch Fannich, Scotland, young Duncan emigrated to Albany, NY in 1784 where he became an apprentice cabinetmaker. In 1791, he moved to New York City and, in a 1793 New York City Directory, he was listed as a “joiner”, and the next year he listed himself as a “cabinetmaker”. At the same time, he changed his last name from the simple “Fife” to the more exotic sounding “Phyfe”. Starting as a poor immigrant, Duncan achieved wealth and fame through hard work and exceptional talent and his clients were some of the wealthiest families in New York City. While he did not introduce a new furniture style, Duncan Phyfe had a refreshing interpretation of fashionable European furniture styles and he introduced New York City to a unique blend of the English Neoclassical and Regency styles. During the first decade of the 19th Century, he became the acknowledged leader of the New York furniture trade and his designs became the New York local style, as his work was considered to be the pinnacle of taste and sophistication. The problem was that it was not a distinct style that could be protected by patents or copyrights and dozens of cabinetmakers copied his designs. Duncan Phyfe was one of the first American cabinetmakers to incorporate factory methods of production where each of his 100 plus craftsmen performed a specific task such as carving or finishing and, since New York was a port city, Phyfe shipped his work to the Mid-Atlantic states, the Southern states where his work was particularly popular with plantation owners, and to Cuba and Guadeloupe. A lot of the furniture that was shipped on speculation to auction houses and dealers was of lesser quality than the consigned pieces that were ordered directly from the factory. In 1800 he made Regency, Sheraton and French Directoire style furniture and the demand for this style of furniture peaked around 1820. Around 1825, tastes changed and his furniture developed into Empire style, with massive claw feet and, in 1840, tastes changed again as a wave of historical revival styles swept the nation, including Grecian, Gothic and Rococco Revival styles. While some scholars say that Duncan Phyfe “went with the flow” and changed furniture styles to what the public wanted, another scholar claims that Phyfe never engaged in the emerging historical revival styles at all. The second opinion seems to be more accurate, as one visiting planter from Columbia, South Carolina wrote to his wife in 1840, saying that Duncan Phyfe’s styles were “as much behind the times in style as they were in price”. However, Duncan Phyfe’s furniture was anything but cheap. In 1816, a “piere” table cost $265, and a sofa was $122, well beyond the reach of the everyday working man.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DUNCAN PHYFE FURNITURE Duncan Phyfe made his furniture from the best grade of rich red Mahogany from Cuba or Santo Domingo and has been known to pay as much as $1000 for a speciﬁc log of Mahogany that had exceptional grain ﬁguring. He also used Black Walnut, Rosewood and Satinwood in his creations. Duncan Phyfe’s name is connected with a long list of styles like double pedestal dining tables, reeded leg sofas, central pedestal drop leaf tables and Martha Washington sewing stands. His furniture has elaborate carving, turning and forms including reeding, thunderbolts, trumpets, rosettes, acanthus leaves, palm leaves, drapery swags, urn turned posts and the most distinctive aspect, the lyre design. The lyre is a stringed instrument of the harp family, having a U shaped frame and was used by the ancient Greeks for songs. It was the Fender Stratocaster of its day. Many of Phyfe’s pieces have lyre shapes including chair backs and he often incorporated lyres to support tables, occasionally using real brass for the strings.

DUNCAN PHYFE FURNITURE continued TABLES Most Duncan Phyfe tables have three slender, tapered and reeded sabre shaped legs that ﬂare out from a pedestal which is usually shaped like an urn. Most of the legs end in paw feet or brass caps and often have brass casters. Sometimes, there are lyre shaped columns or a spread eagle supporting the table top. Some tables have drop leaves while others have separate leaves to extend the table surface.

CHAIRS Many Duncan Phyfe style chairs have sabre shaped front legs but have a wide variety of shapes to their backs, the most distinctive of which is the lyre shape.

SOFAS Most have richly carved frames, low backs and scrolled ends with the legs ending in paws or claws carved from the wood.

VALUES OF DUNCAN PHYFE FURNITURE As mentioned earlier, as soon as Phyfe’s competitors saw how popular his work was they all jumped on the bandwagon and began to copy his work, making it almost impossible to differentiate his work from the others since they are all the same age and many pieces were made by people who had studied under him before going off on their own. Phyfe seldom marked his work and it is estimated that there are not over 20 pieces bearing his mark or label. Of the existing pieces known to have been made by Phyfe is a set of chairs and matching sofas made for New York banker William Bayard in 1807, along with a wardrobe and dressing table. The family still has the receipt from the sale. Other pieces bearing Phyfe’s label and their values are a card table for $11,000; a three post tilt top table for $24,200; a cellaret (a sideboard for holding wine or liquor) $13,200; a satinwood sewing table sold for $93,500·and, in 2006, a lady paid $132,000 for a table with Phyfe’s label.

THE LOST YEARS Duncan Phyfe’s style was almost completely forgotten until 1922 when the Metropolitan Museum of Art introduced their display entitled “Furniture Masterpieces of Duncan Phyfe”. It was the ﬁrst exhibition ever held in an art museum on the work of a single cabinetmaker. That exhibit introduced thousands of people to Phyfe’s work and, in spite of the fact that Martha Stewart’s TV show hadn’t been thought of,the boom in America’s economy after World War II caused thousands of housewives to want new furniture and Mahogany Duncan Phyfe furniture and Rose Beige carpeting was the “hot ticket” for every home! Now, seventy years later, housewives are dragging Grandma’s old dining room furniture out of the shed and bringing it back to life and replacing the cheap particleboard furniture they bought as “starter” furniture now that the kids have gone off on their own. While the postwar Duncan Phyfe style furniture comes in many levels of quality, the price for dining room suites runs from $2000 to $4000, depending on the condition and quality.

TRIVIA In 2011, the Metropolitan Museum again featured Phyfe’s works and another exhibit of Phyfe’s work was held in Houston’s Musem of Fine Arts in 2012. Duncan Phyfe’s furniture can be seen in the White House Green Room, Edgewater, Roper House and in many museums and private collections across America. Karl Shapiro’s poem “The Fly”, mentions “the ﬁne legs of a Duncan Phyfe”; F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “Tender Is The Night” says: “She wept all over a set that cost a fortune in a Duncan Phyfe dining room”; an episode of the Andy Grifﬁth show mentions Duncan Phyfe when Barney Fife believes he’s related to Duncan Phyfe; and he is mentioned in an episode of the sitcom “Dharma and Greg”.
