DATING POSTCARDS

Some of the most saved, if not one of the most collected items in the world are postcards. Because they are colorful, pretty, informative and don’t take up much space, most postcards are tossed in drawers rather than in the trash and, being cheap to print and mail, there are millions of postcards lying in drawers all around the world which has created a large number of postcard collectors and postcard shows.
1901-1907
While probably 95 % of the postcards in the world are worth less than $10, some with photos depicting famous people, events or disasters can bring hundreds of dollars. While the age of a postcard has little bearing on it’s value, a question that frequently arises is “How old is it?” Used postcards normally bear the dated postmark, but many cards purchased as souvenirs of a trip were never mailed and lack that mark.

For those ANTIQUING TEXAS readers who have undated postcards, here’s a little help in dating them:
1930-1944
1893-1898
New printing equipment allowed printing on cards with a high rag content, creating a textured finish with bright colors.
Some of the first postcards were sold at the Columbian Exposition in 1893. The government printed some with the printed one cent stamp and several private companies printed cards that required a two cent stamp be applied. The back side was for the address only and any message had to be written on the picture side of the card. 1898-1901 In May of 1898, Congress allowed private firms to print postcards that said “PRIVATE MAILING CARD”. A one cent stamp was required and only the address was allowed on the back.
Postal regulations required privately printed cards to say “POST CARDS” on the back, while government issued cards read “POSTAL CARDS”. Writing on the back was still prohibited. Many people had black and white photographs printed on post card backs. While Great Britain allowed postcards to have a divided back with the left side used for messages since 1902, the U.S. didn’t allow it until 1907. 1915-1930 To save ink, postcards were printed with a white border around the front.

All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. HOW TO GET THE BARGAINS by Len Waska Whether you are shopping at a Flea Market, a garage sale or an antique show, there are ways to get the best deals but you have to know how to do it. Here are some steps to take to help you land the “deal of the century”.
KNOW YOUR MARKET Is it a weekly or monthly flea market or a once or twice a year event like Round Top’s Antique Week? Deals can be found at both, but the type of event will affect the deals you can make. If it’s an event that occurs weekly or monthly, the chances are the dealers are all locals and come every time. They know what sells best there and will only bring that type of merchandise. If it’s a once or twice a year event, like Round Top, where dealers travel across the country, they may unknowingly bring some merchandise that is not very popular in your area and will be willing to give you a better deal to help cover their travel expenses. Understanding the type of goods being sold can help. If they specialize in something you have no interest in, don’t waste your time. If you collect Depression Glass and the show advertises french furniture, it won’t be worth your time to go. At Round Top, several venues concentrate on European items, so you won’t find any Depression Glass there. At an antique show with vendors who specialize in particular collectibles like vintage toys or pottery, the dealers tend to price their goods higher because they are more aware of the value. Dealers who bring a wide variety of merchandise may not know their merchandise’s true value and may offer better prices.
BRING YOUR MEASUREMENTS Nothing is more disappointing than finding a piece you really like but you don’t know if it will fit in your space or, even worse, it won’t fit in your car or SUV or through your front door. Make sure you know exactly how much room you have for the item and bring the measurements with you.
BRING CASH Cash is the preferred method of payment and is a good bargaining chip if the other customer looking at the same piece only has a credit card. While several companies have made accepting credit cards much easier with a cell phone, the dealers often have to wait a few days for the money to be deposited in their bank.
GET THERE EARLY and STAY LATE “The early bird gets the worm” is especially appropriate when shopping flea markets or antique shows. In many cases, a dealer will bring an extremely rare piece and the first person in the door gets to take it home. Another appropriate phrase is “The best time to buy an antique is when you see it”. A few years ago, we had a rare set of bookends and a customer came back to our booth about 30 minutes after the show had opened and was disappointed to see that someone else had already bought them after had seen them and walked out of the booth. While the customer who arrives early gets a chance at all the hard to find items that are grabbed up by the serious collector, the one who stays late gets the best chance at better prices because the dealers are more motivated to sell their goods when it’s time to go home.
HOW TO HAGGLE You can usually get better prices at flea markets, garage sales and antique malls because most second hand sellers expect a certain amount of haggling and usually include a little extra “fat” in their prices to allow them to do so. In other parts of the world, haggling is almost a “must”,so don’t feel shy or embarrassed. 1. Dress Down. Don’t show up with your largest diamonds or your Gucci purse and expect to get a discount. The dealer won’t believe you when you say you can not pay “X” amount. 2. Smile and greet the dealer when you enter the booth. In France, it’s considered offensive not to do so and you may be ignored when you are ready for help. Here in the USA it’s rude, especially since you are about to ask him for a lower price. 3. When you are ready to buy, ask for a discount, but only if you are serious about buying. Nothing angers a seller more than someone who asks for a discount just to see if they can get one and then walks away. At flea markets, most vendors consider haggling as part of the game. You may not get it at the price you want, but you should be able to get some sort of discount. At yard sales, some sellers expect haggling and price their stuff that way while others act shocked, but haggle anyway. To them, this stuff is just junk and they want to get rid of it. You may wind up getting it for less than you figured, especially at the end of the day when the seller knows he’ll have to drag it back in the house if it doesn’t sell. Since few yard sale vendors know the value of collectibles, you may get the best deals there than at any other type of sale. While the booth owners are seldom present at resale shops and antique malls, many of them leave instructions for a discount to anyone who asks. Unless the tag is marked “FIRM”, be sure to ask. Clerks at thrift stores seldom have the authority to allow discounts, so be sure to ask for the manager.

4. Don’t offer too little. With the recent slump in prices for antiques and collectibles, the dealer may not be able to offer much of a discount and a ridiculously low offer may insult him. Start by offering less than you want to pay and expect to meet somewhere in the middle. 5. Point out problems, but don’t criticize the item. Politely point out any flaws or damage but keep in mind that, if it was flawless, it would probably be priced much higher. 6. Be nice. Remember, you are negotiating, not arguing. Plus, he will probably remember you if you are not polite and you can blow off any idea of a discount in the future. 7. Buy in quantity. If he has several items you are interested in, make him an offer on the whole lot. It will give him a chance to move a lot of merchandise in one sale. You see this done on “American Pickers” on TV. 8. Have cash in hand and show it to him. We said earlier that cash is the preferred method but it is even more preferred if he sees it in your hand. 9. Ask and then don’t say any more. If the seller counters, be silent. If he’s really motivated to sell, he may lower his own deal. A neighbor of mine looked at a vintage pickup truck and, the longer the seller talked, the lower the price got. It’s now in my neighbor’s driveway. 10. Shop late. You’ll get better deals later in the day, especially if the dealer realizes that a lot of people have looked at it and just walked away.
HAGGLING DON’TS 1. Don’t be cheap. Unless you’re offering to take a lot of his items, don’t haggle when the prices are dirt cheap anyway. When items are priced at a quarter, trying to haggle them down to a dime is obnoxious. 2. Don’t haggle on every item you touch. If he gets tired of you asking if he’ll take X for every item you see, he’ll move on to someone else and you may miss out on a good price on that one item you need to complete your collection. Bundle the items you’re interested in and make one offer for the lot. Pay the asking price for a few lower priced items to establish goodwill and he’ll be more willing to deal on the higher priced ones. 3. Don’t walk away after he has accepted your offer. It’s bad form to walk away after you have taken up his time and he has agreed to your price, and he’ll certainly remember you the next time. 4. Don’t tell him “I’ll give you X for that”. A lot of sellers get angry when it looks like the customer is telling them what to do. Instead, ask them if they’ll take X for it. It’s a much more polite way to negotiate and the end result is the same. 5. Don’t leave without saying “Thank You”.Sellers always remember the good customers and the good customers usually get the biggest discounts.
OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS 1. Plan your trip. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, preferably layered, so you can add or subtract as the weather changes through the day. 2. Plan for food. Most venues have some sort of food vendors available but make sure you won’t have to drive miles to grab something to eat. 3. If it’s more than a one day event, find a motel or B&B for the night. 4. Have plenty of cash. Many venues have ATMs, but you may have to stand in line for a long time and/or it may be out of order. 5. Plan your trip by checking out the advertisers here in ANTIQUING TEXAS before you go. Don’t wait to pick up some publication at the event. Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.
The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.
