EARLY AMERICAN PATTERN GLASS While wealthy folks of the early Victorian era could afford to enhance their homes with fine blown or cut glass from Europe, such luxuries were far beyond the reach of the "average Joe" who worked seven days a week for $20 a month. But old fashioned "American ingenuity" helped level the playing field in 1821 when J.P. Blackwell received a patent for a process that could press molten glass into a mold. Blackwell's first pieces were the glass knobs found on the Empire style furniture of the day, but glass houses were soon pressing the molten material into other utilitarian goods such as butter dishes, sugar bowls, creamers and spoon holders. The common man was soon able to replace his earthenware items with attractive pieces of pretty glass, originally called "Pressed Glass", but known today as "Early American Pattern Glass", or EAPG as it is known by most collectors. Collectors recognize three periods of production; the "Lacy Period", which lasted through the 1830's and 1840's, which was characterized by highly profiled designs of fine stippling; The "Flint Period", which stretched from the late 1840's until the start of the Civil War and is known for it's simple geometric lines and the addition of lead which gave it a brilliant appearance, more weight and a "ring" when tapped; and The Non-First Period", which started shortly after the War. The Civil War made lead more valuable for making bullets than for use in glassware, sending the glass industry into a tailspin. True to spirit, faced with having to return 40 year old techniques, American ingenuity stepped in again when, in 1862, William Leighton replaced lead with soda-lime. This began the "Non-First Period" and although the glass was lighter, less brilliant, and less resonant, it was also much less expensive, thinner, and easier to mold, resulting in more complicated designs, detail and craftsmanship. Hundreds of patterns and shapes were created, including animal, fruit, fauna and geometric patterns. While their dishes and serving pieces were still usually made of ironstone, largely imported from England, the American housewife was able to brighten up her table with beautiful glass table sets, usually consisting of a butter dish with a lid, a sugar bowl with a lid, a creamer and a spoon holder, known today as a "spooner". There were also "extended" table sets available that included a celery vase or tray, a cruet or a jelly compote. Having a celery vase was considered somewhat of a status symbol back then as they were associated with the more affluent segment of society. Some companies also offered berry bowls or beverage sets to match the table sets. By the 1880's the national depression caused the glass houses to rethink their production methods and many of the smaller houses joined forces, becoming huge manufacturers. U.S. Glass was made up of eighteen smaller firms and National was a merger of nineteen. The result was increased production, reworked molds, reissues of earlier patterns and the introduction of cased glass, custard glass, opalescent glass and ruby staining, often engraved with names and dates and known today as "Souvenier Glass". But fires, financial failures and other events caused production to suffer again and, around the time of World War I, production of Pattern Glass essentially ceased. During it's nearly 100 year run, Early American Pattern Glass was produced by almost 100 companies in over 2,000 patterns. One of the rarest patterns is "U.S. Coin", made by the U.S. Glass company in 1892. Production was shut down by the United States Treasury Department after only a few months because the factory had used real coins to make the molds and it was considered "counterfeiting". Today a Champagne glass in the U.S. Coin pattern brings $2,500 and a 9-inch compote books for about $4,500. Many patterns contained dozens of pieces, such as "King's Crown" which originally consisted of 100 pieces made by two manufacturers. It has since had 66 of the pieces reproduced by five other companies. At the other end of the spectrum, are patterns where only one piece was made, such as the rare, "Owl and Pussycat" cheese dish, which books for $400.
100 pieces in at least 24 colors. The original late 1800's pieces, were made in clear, clear with frosted moons, and clear with ruby stain. Anything else, although pretty, should be considered reproductions. As proof of it's popularity, Moon and Star is the only EAPG pattern that had it's own dedicated price guide. Another very interesting facet of collecting EAPG is the series by U.S. Glass known as "the States Series". Although no records exist to explain exactly why the series was started, whether it was a shrewd marketing ploy or just a whim, the large number of pieces offered in each pattern made these some of the U.S. Glass comapny's most popular lines. Introduced in 1897, pattterns called "Indiana", "Pennsylvania", "Ohio", "Maryland", "Kentucky", and "Illinois" were produced in clear and emerald green, either plain or gilded (Indiana was issued only in clear). In 1898, they added "Lousiania", "Massachusetts", "Minnesota", "Florida", and "Colorado" and by 1902, twenty five additional designs were introduced for a total of 36 patterns in only seven years. An excellent book, entitled "U.S. Glass, the States Patterns", was written by Jenks and Reilly in 1998 and, although out of print, it's a "must have" book for the serious EAPG collector. Due to the lack of factory records or literature, many early researchers assigned their own names to the patterns over the years, ignoring the fact that earlier researchers had done the same. The end result is that numerous EAPG patterns have several different names. The pattern now known as "Cut Log" for example, was originally called "Ethol" by the manufacturer. It is also known to collectors as "Cat's Eye" and "Block". The pattern "Ashburton" has fourteen other names. The large number of names assigned to each pattern makes identification extremely difficult. An out of print book, but one that can still be found, that helps with pattern identification is "The Collector's Encyclopedia of Pattern Glass" by Molly McCain. This book helps identify approximately 2400 patterns by their primary characteristics, such as "animals", "birds", "circles", "facets", "flowers", "shells", etc. This is another "must have" book even for the advanced collector. While on the subject of out of print books, to serious collectors, the "Holy Grail" of EAPG reference books is "Pressed Glass in America" by John and Elizabeth Welker. This book covers the history of pressed glass from 1825 to 1925 in minute detail, including patent drawings of machinery and molds used to produce this fine glassware. Several reference books on Early American Pattern Glass have been written over the years by authors such as Ruth Webb Lee, who wrote over a dozen books in the 1930's and Minnie Watson Kamm in the 1940's. At the present time, there are four reference books currently available on EAPG. One is written by Mike Carwile, who identiifies and prices approximately 1,200 patterns, another on written by Jenks and Luna covers the 248 most popular patterns as well as listing all known reproductions in each pattern, and "American Pattern Glass Table Sets" by Gene and Kathy Florence and Danny Cornelius and Don Jones, who identify and price table sets in 425 patterns. The most recent addition to our knowledge of Pattern Glass is again by NDGA Director Danny Cornelius and Don Jones and is entitled "Early American Pattern Glass Cake Stands & Serving Pieces, Identification and Value Guide". The book contains 1,150 photos of 465 known patterns and 20 unidentified ones from 64 manufacturers. Where do you start? With the thousands of pattern glass reproductions and "look alikes" on the market, the new collector needs to familiarize himself with the many pitfalls by learning as much as he can from talking to dealers who specialize in Pattern Glass or by picking up one of the many price guides available. Since it's impossible for an antique dealer to know everything about every type of antique on the market, the old adage, "if you don't know your antiques, know your antiques dealer" is very applicable.
While Kings Crown has had a large number of pieces reproduced, the pattern known as "Moon and Star" actually has more reproductions and "look alike" pieces than were originally made. Made by three glass houses between 1888 and 1898, "Moon and Star", originally named "Palace", had 60 pieces. Today's collector can find slightly over

ROSEVILLE POTTERY In the late 1800s, Ohio had become the center for American Art Pottery due to its easily accessable waterways, plenty of natural gas and rich clay and, during the first decade of the 20th Century, Zanesville, Ohio was known as “Clay City” because it had 15 potteries. Of all the potteries in the country, the Roseville Pottery Company produced probably the most recognizable American Art Pottery, partly due to the fact that their wares were sold in drug stores and flower shops all across the country. Founded in Roseville, Ohio in 1890 with George Frank Young as the General Manager, they purchased the J. B. Owens Pottery Company where they produced flower pots, cuspidors, coin banks, umbrella stands, cooking crocks and novelties, none of which were marked with the company name. The company incorporated in 1892 and, in 1898, the company moved 11 miles to Zanesville, Ohio, keeping the Roseville name. In 1899, Roseville sued Samuel A.Weller, the owner of Weller Pottery Co, for patent infringement. About this time, George Young gained control of all the shares of Roseville stock and decided the company should shift their interest to the popular Art Pottery business. Intending to be the best Art Pottery company in America, George Young hired the best talent available, many of whom became famous in the art pottery and ceramics fields and later started their own potteries. Originally, the company used only local clays in their products for the basic bisque material, but later added foreign clays for additional strength and better finish. Both the World Wars stopped importation of foreign materials, so they turned to neighboring states for materials. Sales declined after World War II, partly due to cheaper Japanese goods and partly because changing life styles made Roseville’s elaborate designs seem “old fashioned”. In the late 1940s, the company issued some glossy finished items in hopes of capturing the public’s attention again.
THE MAKING OF POTTERY The entire procedure involved in making pottery is fascinating. It’s the kind of thing that everybody should put on their “bucket list”. Finely powdered clay is combined with water to make a slurry, about the consistency of pancake batter, called “slip”. It is thin enough to be forced through tubing to several stations where it's poured into handshaped plaster moulds. The plaster absorbs the water from the slip, causing the slip next to the plaster mould to harden. Excess slip is poured out of the mould and recycled into more pottery. The longer the slip stays in the mould, the thicker the clay in the pottery. All of Roseville’s small shapes and even some of the large square umbrella stands were made this way. None of Roseville’s commercial production was hand turned on a potter’s wheel. After the moist clay shapes are removed from the plaster moulds, they are trimmed with a knife to remove the joint marks, the bottoms are recessed and stamped and the handles are added. Background colors are airbrushed on. Hand painting on the company’s finest pieces took from a few hours to as much as two days for the largest pieces.
LINES With over 130 lines, space will not allow us to list all of them. The “DELLA ROBBIA” line consisted of stylized, hand carved designs; “TOURIST” was paneled with country scenes; “CREMO” pieces have simple decorations, but are very rare, bringing as much as $1000 for an example. The “MARA” line is covered in a metallic lustre; “OLYMPIC” is similar to ancient Greek wares; “FUDJIYAMA” comes in bisque and enameled finish; “CHLORON” has a bright, smooth green glaze and is often unmarked; “EGYPTIAN” has a rich, variegated green glaze and is marked with the Rozane seal. “AZUREAN” was introduced in 1902 and is like Weller’s blue Louwelsa with a blue and white underglaze on a blended background (Maybe this was to get even with Weller for their patent infringement). In 1904, George Young hired Frederick Rhead away from Weller and Rhead designed the company’s Olympic and Della Robbia lines and later designed Homer Laughlin’s “Fiesta” line. By 1908 all hand crafting had ended except for the Rozane Royal line. In 1904, Frank Ferrell was Weller’s top decorater, designing 80 lines for the company, and was Roseville’s Artistic Director from 1917 until 1954. In 1931, Roseville introduced their “Pine Cone” line which became one of the company’s most successful lines, being available in over 75 shapes in blue, brown and green. (For Roseville fans,
by Len Waska
probably the finest display of Blue Roseville Pine Cone in the United States was at the San Antonio Glass Show in February of 2011.) For 1931, the company’s emphasis was on utilitarian items with floral designs in pastel colors. In 1952, in an attempt to figure out what the buying public wanted, the company used outside design talent to develop an oven - to - table dinnerware line called “RAYMAR”. It was a modernistic line designed to compete with plastics and cheap foreign goods. It didn’t sell well and in November of 1954, the company was sold, having spent 66 years trying to figure out the public’s constantly changing tastes.
MARKS Early pieces of Roseville were steel die impressed and it’s not unusual to find a piece with a letter or number upside down, making a modern buyer think it is one of the many fake pieces around. Other marks are “RPCO”, “RPCo” and “R.P.CO.” In all, over 40 different marks were used on Roseville through the years. In 1931, the name was changed to “Roseville Pottery, Inc.” and the name was printed in artistic form, originally indented into the piece and later raised with "U.S.A." added. All pieces made after 1937 were marked. Note - Pieces marked “R.R.P.Co., Roseville, Ohio” are NOT genuine Roseville.
COLLECTING ROSEVILLE Interest in collecting Roseville began in the late 1960’s but, as interest increased, more pieces were drug out of closets and off of mantles and the market became flooded with Roseville. This caused the collectors to concentrate on only the finest examples and, in the 1990s, the internet flooded the market again, causing prices of the most common lines to drop, like Magnolia, Clematis and Snowberry. The less common patterns, such as Pine Cone, Fuschia and Moss have increased in value. The most desired pieces are the “Trial Wares” that were made when the company tried to make a different piece or a different color and just a few pieces were made. These pieces are usually marked with letters and numbers on the bottom in blue ink.
FAKE ROSEVILLE The novice collector needs to be very careful when buying Roseville. The first fakes were very poorly made and colored, but, as the word got out about what to look out for, the cheaters made the corrections. Often, a fake will have the size but not the shape number, or will have a Roseville mark on a piece that the factory didn't mark. Some Chinese fakes have the name but no size or shape numbers and many fakes have flowers that Roseville never used. The best place to check for fakes is the Roseville Exchange at www.ohioriverpottery.com/roseville_exchange/roseville. This site shows fakes side by side with original pieces.
MORE INFORMATION There have been about a dozen books written about Roseville in the past 30 years but most of them are out of print. Current price guides, and the ones used for this article, are: Warman’s Roseville Pottery, 2nd Edition, by Denise Rago, whose father, Dave Rago, is an appraiser on the Antiques Roadshow, $24.99 Introducing Roseville, 2nd Edition, by Mark Bassett, $39.95 Understanding Roseville by Mark Bassett. A very in-depth book for the advanced collector, $39.95 Roseville in all it’s Splendor by the Bomm family, comprised mostly of pages from Roseville factory catalogs $39.95 Bassett’s RosevIlle Prices, a pocket sized, (4" by 8 1/2") that fits easily in a pocket, purse or auto glove compartment, $ 9.95 All of these books are available from THE BOOKWORM.

HOUSTON
Come to the country and find antique treasures under the trees and in an historic German Turnverein that has been the center of social activities since 1879. Built to promote physical, spiritual and social life, the Turnverein provided the all male members with a place to practice their sport called Tureining similar to present day chinning the bar. By the 1930’s the practice had ended and the Turnverein became a meeting place on Sundays and hosted social functions such as dances. The 1902 original dance hall is a fine example of construction methods the Germans brought with them from their homeland including a rare arch-type ceiling not typical for structures of this kind and not like others that are still standing. This building could tell us much about the life of the people living along the Fayette and Washington county line. Decendants of the original charter families and members of the community are dedicated to the preservation of this architectural and historic “jewel” so it may continue to serve the community for many years to come. The Turnverein is the perfect setting for La Bahia Antiques Show for dealers and collectors. This year, March 30 to Aprril 7 are the dates for the Show & Sale. Some of the dealers will be setting up outside under the beautiful old trees. These dealers will offer quite a variety of merchandise such as Garden Architectural Items, Painted Furniture, Industrial, Advertising, Shabby Chic, Collectibles and Re-purpose Items and Wagons. Inside the hall, Flow Blue, American Primitives, Victorian, English Antiques, American Linens, Vintage & Estate Jewelry, Elegant Glass, Silver Sets, Toys, Quilts, Collectibles, Repurpose Items & much more will be offered for sale to many of the eager buyers. Porcelain restoration at the show. Those who are looking for a particular item enjoy a country atmosphere, history, and the aroma of wonderful food cooking in the outside kitchen area, and are interested in seeing an unusual architectural building should make plans to visit the La Bahia Show. La Bahia is located 15 miles west of Brenham, Texas on Hwy. 290 W, 1/2 mile left on Texas 237. The location is only 7 miles from Round Top. Since the neighboring towns are also holding antique shows and sales on these same dates, this area is the place to be.
