FIESTA WARE During the first part of the Twentieth Century, American’s taste in color was almost exclusively black and white. Most china dinnerware was white, most of the colorlful Victorian homes had been repainted all white and Henry Ford said that people could buy their Model Ts in any color they wanted as long as it was black. But, like all fashions, the only constant is change and in the late 1920s there was a definite trend toward color and the glass houses began to produce tableware in shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue. This had a devasting effect on the china manufacturers as they lost market share to what is now called “Depression Glass”. To fight back, they decided to produce china in colors even bolder. From 1930 to today, over 150 lines of solid colored dinnerware have been produced in the United States and Homer Laughlin China Company’s “Fiesta” is the most popular, with several price guides written for the collector. The design of Fiesta is simple and versatile, consisting of bands of concentric rings graduating in width, with the widest rings closest to the rim. Plates, nappies, platters and desserts have the rings repeated in the center. Introduced in January 1936, Fiesta was originally available in a brilliant red-orange, called Fiesta Red, deep blue, green, bright yellow and ivory and by May of 1937, a housewife could buy fifty-four different items of Fiesta in these colors plus turquoise. By 1939, Fiesta was so popular that many companies copied it. Homer Laughlin sued and won but decided to add the word “genuine” to each piece to assure housewives that they were not buying one of the many imitations. One of the most popular colors in the Fiesta line was “Fiesta Red”, which used Uranium Oxide to produce the glaze. In 1943, the Federal Government took control of all Uranium Oxide production for the war effort and Fiesta Red was discontinued. In 1959, the government licensed the Homer Laughlin China Company to once again buy Uranium Oxide and Fiesta Red was re-introduced to the marketplace. Because Uranium is used in the glaze, Fiesta Red is radioactive and, occasionally, a customer will come to an antique show or shop with a Geiger counter to check out the “Radioactive Red” items. The radioactivity caused a lot of concern in the early Eighties and many owners threw away or even buried their pieces of red Fiesta for fear of the radiation. The reality is that a 13 inch chop plate emits about 20 Milliroentgens of radiation in a day, while the luminous dial on a wrist watch puts out that much in only an hour, and nobody has ever had their arm glow in the dark because of their wrist watch. From 1936 until it was discontinued in 1973, Fiesta went through several

9

by Len Waska

item and color changes and by the time it was discontinued, it had been made in 67 standard items and seven promotional items in eleven colors. By the 1980's interest in bright colors for home decoration came back into vogue and Homer Laughlin reintroduced their Fiesta line in sixteen new colors, many of which bear the same names as the old but none are the same shade as the original colors. This has caused great confusion among beginning collectors. In general, all of the new Fiesta colors are more like pastel shades, while the eleven original colors are rather bold, closer to the colors in a box of crayons. To assist the collector, most of the current Fiesta price guides have pictures of all twenty seven colors. Also, the new colors have a high gloss, while the old Fiesta colors are rather dull in comparison. It doesn’t take long to be able to detect the new colors from the old. The original Fiesta colors were, red, cobalt, yellow, light green, ivory, turquoise, gray, medium green, dark green, rose and chartreuse. When it was reintroduced in 1986, the new Fiesta colors were white, black, cobalt, rose, apricot, yellow, turquoise, periwinkle, seamist green, lilac, persimmon, sapphire, rasberry, chartreuse, pearl gray, and juniper. Because of the high cost of the Uranium Oxide and the misplaced fear of it’s radiation, Fiesta Red was not reintroduced. Other ways to tell the new Fiesta from the old is that the old plates have a “wet foot”. That is the part that touches the table is glazed and the piece has three “sagger pin” marks where the piece was held above the floor of the kiln during firing to keep it from sticking. New Fiesta plates have a “dry foot”, an exposed ring of clay where they touch he table. Another method to tell the old Fiesta from the new is by the ink stamps on the marked pieces. While several different inkmarks were used on the original Fiesta, the letters are all in small case, while the inkmarks on new Fiesta have the name in all capital letters. The mold markings are harder to differentiate, because new Fiesta pieces made MOLD MARKING from the old molds will have the the same mold markings and, in these cases, the colors will tell NEW INKSTAMP the old from the new. Cups are easy to tell apart because the handles on OLD INKSTAMP the old Fiesta are rings, while the new Fiesta cup handles are “C” shaped. Because of it’s bright colors and simple design, Fiesta ware goes well with almost any decor and will continue in popularity for NEW generations to come. The best OLD advice for beginning Fiesta collectors is to get one of the several price guides available, the most popular of which is Bob and Sharon Huxford’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Fiesta, to see the many available pieces and colors. The only problem then is deciding whether to collect place settings in the same color or “mix and match”, keeping in mind that not every piece is readily available in all colors. For example, a medium green casserole can go for about $1000, while the same piece in light green is worth under $100.

THE BREWSTER CHAIR by Len Waska Antique Furniture Restoration

In 1969, an arrogant antique dealer in Maine told a customer “You wouldn’t know a good antique if you saw one”. Besides his extreme arrogance, his biggest mistake was that he made it to a Rhode Island gentleman named Armand LaMontagne, a self-taught artist known for his extremely realistic sculptures of famous athletes. Deciding to put the “expert” in his place, Mr. LaMontagne spent weeks researching Colonial-era furniture from the 1600s. He learned that Great chairs from Colonial America are coveted because only people of high stature owned them. He also learned that two such chairs were made for William Brewster (1566-1643) who was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its spiritual leader, and the chairs were some of the first chairs made in America. At the time of his death, the records show that Brewster owned two chairs. His family donated a chair to the Pilgrim Museum in Plymouth, and other one has never surfaced. What could be more intriguing to an arrogant antique dealer than one of the oldest chairs in the country? Mr. LaMontagne got a picture of the existing Brewster chair and proceeded to make a duplicate. To make sure it was as accurate as possible, he payed careful attention to the tools available in the early 1600s and used materials of the period. He used green Oak that warped as it dried out and wooden pins of the Colonial era to hold elements of the chair together, as nails were practically unheard of at the time. Since a chair that old would show heavy wear to have lasted that many centuries, LaMontagne aged the chair by letting it soak in the ocean for a while, put it in a working smokehouse for a couple weeks, and even used lint from his wife’s cotton curtains when he painted it. He even broke a couple of the turned spindles below the front of the seat like someone would have done to hook their heels while leaning back. When the chair was completed, he had a friend in Maine call the dealer who had been so rude to him and tell the dealer that he had some family antiques he wanted to sell. When the dealer arrived, he glanced at the chair but went to look at another piece. As soon as LaMontagne’s friend left the room, the dealer rushed over to the chair to inspect it closely, and eventually purchased it. The chair changed hands many times and eventually was sold to the Henry Ford Museum in 1970 for $9,000 as a Brewster Great Chair. It wasn’t until 1977 that word got out that the Maine antiques dealer had fallen for a fake Brewster chair and it was proven when x-rays revealed that the drill bit used to make the holes had a modern point, rather than the spoon-shaped bits the Pilgrims had. Deciding to make lemonade out of the lemon, the Ford Museum keeps the chair on display as proof that not all “antiques” are really antique.

WAVE CREST WARE In August of 2003, at an antique auction in Austin, Texas, headlines were made when a highly decorated Wave Crest jewelry box went for a record price of $17,050. The price caught the attention of thousands of antiques collectors who said "What in the world is Wave Crest, and why is it so expensive?" In short, wave crest is a particular brand of opaque, creamy white glass called "opal ware". Most pieces of Wave Crest have brass rims, hinges and feet, and many have silk linings. Decorated opalware reached the height of it's popularity between 1890 and 1910, and at it's peak, the C. F. Monroe Company of Meriden, CT was the world's largest producer of this type of glass. Largely ignored until 1967, the fine qualities of Wave Crest were brought to the attention of collectors when Albert Christian Revi wrote his book "Nineteenth Century Glass". Shortly after the book was published, collector's enthusiasm was ignited and prices began to rise. In 1880, Charles F. Monroe, a glass decorator for the Meriden First Glass Company, opened a small shop handling imported glassware. Over the next few years he closed the glass shop and opened an art academy, and in 1886 he built a factory for decorating glass which became, "The C. F. Monroe Company", known for it's finely decorated opal glass called 'Wave Crest'. In 1892, the name 'Wave Crest' was patented and in 1898, the trade mark was registered. Advertised as "wedding and holiday novelties", Wave Crest went through a very time consuming and expensive manufacturing process before it was ready for the public. Plain, undecorated blanks were purchased from many sources such as Pairpoint and Mount Washington, Roederfer on Ohio, Dithridge in Pennsylvania and several European glass houses, primarily located in France. All of the blanks were designed by Monroe and none were used by other companies. Although the blanks have varied and interesting shapes, at the C. F. Monroe Company the decoration was 'everything' and the factory listed several different levels of decoration for the same blank. Most of the blanks first received an acid bath for a soft, lusterless finish and some had a matte surface painted on. Very few pieces are found in an original, glossy state. After the acid wash, the blanks were either entirely or partially painted with one or more background colors, mostly in soft pastel shades like pink, yellow, and ivory. After the background color was painted on, the blanks were fired. The next step in the Wave Crest manufacturing process was the painting of various motifs, primarily of a floral nature, and the blanks were fired for a second time. The third step in the manufacturing process involved raised enamel decoration and the addition of gilt and the piece was fired for a third time. The elaborate decorating techniques and the fragility of the glass made it comparatively costly and the factory's 1895 catalog shows one piece bearing a wholesale price of $50, which was a small fortune at the time. As mentioned above, at the C. F. Monroe company, the decoration was '"everything". While most of the decoration is of a floral nature, many pieces bear other designs such as portraits, cherubs, and leaves. Relatively scarce, and for that reason relatively expensive, are the pieces with seascapes, animals, birds, figures, and Persian-like beaded designs. In the later years of the company, in order to reduce the manufacturing costs, the factory began to include transfers with hand painted beading on them, eventually reducing the amount of hand decoration until many pieces reached the market with transfers only.

by Len Waska

During it's lifetime, the C. F. Monroe company also manufactured two other lines of opal ware. In addition to "Wave Crest", the company produced a line called "Nakara", introduced in 1902, which usually has simple shapes with deep, rich background colors with beaded and raised enamel scrolls. Many transfers of Kate Greenaway figures and Gibson girls were used extensively. The third line was called "Kelva" which was introduced in 1904. Very little Kelva was produced, usually in simple shapes, but always with a unique, mottled background, much like the painted wall surfaces modern day interior decorators use when they push rags or wadded paper into the wet paint. While the same blanks were used for all three lines, each had it's own unique style of decoration and the Kelva line is the most rare and, consequently, the most expensive. Since Wave Crest was intended to be utilitarian, not just for decoration, the pieces were used every day, so many pieces got tarnished and broken or thrown away, hence their scarcity. The most popular pieces were covered, hinged boxes for jewelry and gloves, open trays for jewelry (called "pin trays"), powder boxes, collar and cuff boxes, vases, bowls, card and photo receivers, biscuit jars, tobacco humidors and ferneries. Among the more scarce pieces are: sugar sifters, napkin rings, paper weights, whisk broom holders, ring holders and ink wells and the most sought after pieces are wall plaques called "gems" by the factory. Although many of the pieces were marked by the factory, Charles Monroe always stated his belief that the glass "spoke for itself" and needed no signature. Early pieces had paper labels with the earliest saying "Wave Crest ware, patented Oct. 2, 1892." In 1898, the factory introduced what collectors call the "red banner mark". The lack of a mark does not affect the price of Wave Crest and, to date, it has not been reproduced, although, with the piece bringing $17,050 at the Texas auction, that status may not last much longer. Because Wave Crest's popularity and the lack of marks on about half of the production, many people, including too many dealers, often confuse Wave Crest with products from C. F. Monroe's contemporaries who tried to take advantage of it's popularity by making their own "knock-offs". Among these companies are: Belle ware, Keystone ware, and P. J. Handel. More recently, a designer from the Fenton glass company saw a piece of Wave Crest in the Helmschmeid swirl pattern and designed a line for Fenton called "Wave Crest", although it is different enough that it cannot be confused with real Wave Crest. The history of the C. F. Monroe Company, and Wave Crest, closely followed the popularity of decorated opal ware, and when the public's interest waned, the factory closed it's doors in 1916 and destroyed all of their records. So, unless someone stumbles across a distributor's warehouse full of dusty old records, it is unlikely that much more information will ever be uncovered about Wave Crest, and record setting auction prices like the one in Texas will keep prices rising. For more information, the best source is the book called "Wave Crest" by Wilfred Cohen, published in 1987 and now out of print. The publication currently brings well over $100 on the used book market. Other sources of information are Albert Christian Revi's book,"Nineteenth Century Glass", which is still in print, and reprints of several factory catalogs that have surfaced.

HOUSTON

Come to the country and find antique treasures under the trees and in an historic German Turnverein that has been the center of social activities since 1879. Built to promote physical, spiritual and social life, the Turnverein provided the all male members with a place to practice their sport called Tureining similar to present day chinning the bar. By the 1930’s the practice had ended and the Turnverein became a meeting place on Sundays and hosted social functions such as dances. The 1902 original dance hall is a fine example of construction methods the Germans brought with them from their homeland including a rare arch-type ceiling not typical for structures of this kind and not like others that are still standing. This building could tell us much about the life of the people living along the Fayette and Washington county line. Decendants of the original charter families and members of the community are dedicated to the preservation of this architectural and historic “jewel” so it may continue to serve the community for many years to come. The Turnverein is the perfect setting for La Bahia Antiques Show for dealers and collectors. This year, March 29 to April 6 are the dates for the Show & Sale. Some of the dealers will be setting up outside under the beautiful old trees. These dealers will offer quite a variety of merchandise such as Garden Architectural Items, Painted Furniture, Industrial, Advertising, Shabby Chic, Collectibles and Re-purpose Items and Wagons. Inside the hall, Flow Blue, American Primitives, Victorian, English Antiques, American Linens, Vintage & Estate Jewelry, Elegant Glass, Silver Sets, Toys, Quilts, Collectibles, Repurpose Items & much more will be offered for sale to many of the eager buyers. Porcelain restoration at the show. Those who are looking for a particular item enjoy a country atmosphere, history, and the aroma of wonderful food cooking in the outside kitchen area, and are interested in seeing an unusual architectural building should make plans to visit the La Bahia Show. La Bahia is located 15 miles west of Brenham, Texas on Hwy. 290 W, 1/2 mile left on Texas 237. The location is only 7 miles from Round Top. Since the neighboring towns are also holding antique shows and sales on these same dates, this area is the place to be.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.

The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

BOUTIQUES

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.
