For centuries, people on ocean voyages washed their clothes by putting them in a cloth bag and letting the ship drag them through the sea for hours, forcing the water through the clothes to loosen and remove the dirt. Compared to what the housewife of the time had to go through, this was “heaven”. Without running water and using a wood burning stove or boiler, “wash day” was just short of torture. One load of wash, one boiling and one rinse used about fifty gallons of water (about 400 pounds) that had to be moved from the well or pump to the stove or tub in buckets that weighed as much as 40 or 50 pounds. Rubbing, wringing and lifting heavy water-laden clothes and linens, especially large articles like bed sheets or man’s heavy work clothes, wore on women’s arms and wrists and exposed them to caustic substances. They lugged heavy tubs and baskets of wet laundry outside, hung them on the line to dry and then took them back inside and spent several hours next to a hot stove with sad irons heating on its surface and proceeded to iron the clothes. “Wash Day” was a hated but necessary evil and modern housewives would revolt before enduring that. The first washing tools were ”scrub boards” that had ribbed surfaces that the clothes were rubbed over to loosen the dirt. Early versions were made of metal but, as it rusted and tore the clothes, the metal was replaced with ribbed glass. The first manual machines imitated the motion of the human hand on the washboard, using a lever to rub the clothes between two ribbed surfaces. This was patented in the U.S. in 1824 and was still shown in the 1927 Montgomery Ward catalog. Pictures of a lot of the manual machines can be found in the old Sears and Wards catalogs. The first electric washing machine, using a motor to rotate a tub to duplicate the action of the scrub board, was introduced to America around 1900. The biggest problem was that the motor was located underneath the tub and water often dripped into it, causing short circuits and strong electric shocks to the housewife. By 1911, washing machines were available made with oscillating sheet metal tubs on angle iron frames with perforated metal or wooden slat cylinders inside. Various methods were used to transfer the power to the turning parts including chains, belts, shafts and gears, but a greater challenge was developing a motor that would not burn out when trying to start to turn a heavy tub holding up to 70 pounds of water and wet clothes, and the motor had to be protected from water spillage and overheating. Another problem with the scrub board style of washing machine was that different textiles required different speeds to prevent shredding of delicate fabrics. This resulted in the “agitator” style machine that duplicated the action of the ship dragging the clothes through the ocean to loosen and remove the dirt. The vertical orientation of these machines became the industry standard, replacing the horizontal rotating axis of the earlier machines. The first company to produce an agitator washing machine was Beatty Brothers of Fergus, Ontario and the first U.S. company to adapt the agitator technology was Maytag. The early Beatty machines had ribbed copper tubs which were usually nickel plated and, in the 1920s, white enameled sheetmetal replaced the copper tubs and, by the early 1930s, enameled steel was touted as being more sanitary, easier to clean and longer lasting than other finishes and the sheetmetal skirt extended below the motor to prevent electric shocks. In the early 1920s, several machines made in Canada had built in gas or electric water heaters but, by the 1930s, most homes had water heaters and the washing machine heaters were discontinued. About that time, a motor driven drain pump was introduced. The next washing machine innovation was a timer that allowed the machine to be run for different length wash cycles without having someone stand there to watch it. By the early 1950s, most American manufacturers made machines that spin dried the clothes and eliminated the wringer that squeezed out the water and often caused accidents with hair, hands and any other parts that extended out from the body. In 1957, General Electric introduced a washing machine that had push buttons to control wash temperature, rinse temperature, agitation speed and spin speed. A trip to a modern appliance store would astound a housewife from the first part of the Twentieth Century.

All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Who are we? We are beef jerkey artists. Testing each flavor to perfection, alongside our unique texture, and tenderness is our recipe for amazing jerky. It all began in the Northern Woods, making jerky for our trips to the wilderness using a simple dehydrator with pre-mixed flavor packets. This quickly evolved into experimenting with various spices turning the kitchen into a laboratory. Here we are today, spreading flavor to the masses with our growing beef jerky varieties.
