BURMESE GLASS by Len Waska Like all parents, Deming Jarvis wanted to make sure his son George would be successfuI, so in 1837, he started the Mount Washington Glass Company in South Boston,but George, like a lot of today’s children, didn’t have any interest in the glass business although Deming hoped he eventually would. After a couple years of insistence, George finally decided to give it a try but his heart wasn’t really in it and the business closed in 1869. Later that year, William Libbey, an employee of Mount Washington, bought the factory and re-opened it. In early 1872, Libbey accepted a position with a competitor and, combined with a downturn in the nation’s economy, the factory closed for a second time. By late 1874, the economy picked up and the factory opened again under the control of four owners. One of them was Frederick Shirley, the man responsible for developing the glass formulas for Mount Washington. Some of Shirley’s earliest formulas were “Lava” in 1878, and “Lusterless” in 1881. Joseph Locke, a developer for the New England Glass Company, came up with the formula for “Amberina”, a transparent bicolored novelty glass that shaded from red to yellow which was very popular. Frederick Shirley thought he could develop an opaque glass that also had a color change. After many experiments, Shirley added uranium oxide, which changed white glass to a salmon pink. After several more tries, he developed a glass that changed from salmon pink to a pretty shade of lemon yellow when reheated in the furnace. This new color formula was patented on December 15, 1885 and it became an immediate success for Mount Washington and pieces were made both mould blown and freehand. Shirley was so proud of his invention that he gave four vases to U.S. President Cleveland’s new wife. In order to protect his formula, Shirley also patented it in England on June 16, 1886. He presented some pieces to Queen Victoria and her daughter Princess Beatrix, According to legend, when Queen Victoria saw it, she was so impressed with the colors that she said it reminded her of a sunset in Burma and the name stuck. Because the Queen was so enthralled with it, Thomas Webb and Sons obtained a license to produce it in England and named it “Queen’s Burmese”. Burmese continued in production until the late 1890s when tastes changed and the era of elegant decorating was over. After several name changes and reorganizations, the company became known as the Gunderson Glass Works, operated by Robert Gunderson, a glass blower from the factory. In the 1950s, Burmese was revived but the color was not the same as the earlier version and the pieces were heavier. It did not appeal to the public and was soon discontinued. In 1960, the Fenton Glass Company, a firm well known for copying other company’s ideas, hired Charlie Goe to work on old glass formulas. The work fascinated Charlie and he immediately set to work solving glass mysteries. His crowning achievement was unlocking the mystery of the Mount Washington Burmese formula. ln 1969, Charlie revealed his success when a beautiful piece of Burmese emerged from the furnace. Unfortunately, that evening, Charlie played his usual game of handball and died of a heart attack. In the 1970s, the Fenton Glass Company made thousands of pieces of Burmese in all shapes and continued production until the company closed a few years ago. A Wooton Standard Grade Desk
While today’s businessmen have smart phones, laptops, tablets and flash drives, businessmen of the last quarter of the 18th Century were inundated by the demand for more paperwork brought about by the success of the Industrial Revolution. They needed a place for writing and record keeping, all in one place that was not only secure, but also elegant enough to show off their newly found wealth. That problem was solved by William S. Wooten with his “Cabinet Secretary”. Born in 1835, William S. Wooten was a partner in the George A. Grant Co, manufacturers of school, office and court furniture. In 1870, he moved to Indianapolis and established the Wooten Desk Company, making school, office and church desks and furniture . He designed a three part desk with a central section that had a drop down writing surface and two paneled doors that swung out. When closed, it looked like a safe. The left door had a window letter box, cubbyholes and shelves, while the right side had pigeon holes with drawers. Each Wooten desk had 110 compartments to organize and hold everything a businessman dealt with. On October 6, 1874, the United States Patent Office issued a patent for the “Wooten Patent Cabinet Office Secretary”. The desk was a huge hit at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and they were sold to people such as John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, Joseph Pulitzer and even Queen Elizabeth, Wooten desks were manufactured in Indianapolis due to the abundant supply of Walnut trees, immigrant craftsmen and its proximity to the railroads. It was a machine-made product with all parts standardized and it came in four grades, the higher grades having much more elaborate ornamentation and finer woods. The grades were: “Ordinary Grade”, “Standard Grade”, “Extra Grade” and “Superior Grade”, and each grade was available with three levels of ornamentation. Prices ranged from $100 for an Ordinary Grade unit with Level One ornamentation, to $750 for a Superior Grade desk with Level Three ornamentation. Other than different cornices for the customer to choose from, the company refused to customize them, claiming they were “too hurried in getting out desks” to accommodate such orders.

WOOTEN THE KING OF DESKS Continued The exterior of the desk was usually Black Walnut with burl walnut panels and drawers accented with gold leaf, and interiors were made of lighter woods like pine, maple, holly and satin wood, with Berlin bronze hardware. The Victorians liked contrasting woods,so Wooten used a lot of Ebony to obtain it. The original desks from the 1870s were manufactured in the Renaissance Revival style with its characteristic square shape and ornate carvings. Around 1880, the Aesthetic Movement, espoused by Charles Eastlake, caught the public’s interest and Wooten desks were made with simpler, straight lines, less ornamentation, straight spindles instead of curved ones, and panels were plain with no burl. The desks made in the 1870s are more desirable than those from the 1880s, but Wooten desks still command high prices, with the earlier models bringing in the $20,000 to $30,000 range and the later ones bringing only a little less. In 1884, William Wooten retired to become a full time Protestant preacher and the desks continued in production until 1891 when the country was hit with an economic downturn. This Eastlake cylinder desk has an unusual segmented cylinder.
In 1750, no matter where you went in Europe, cell phone service was so poor that people actually had to resort to writing letters to each other. King Louis XV, who ruled France from 1710 until his death in 1774, had an interest in security, possibly as result of an assassination attempt in 1757, and around 1760 he commissioned his best celebrated cabinetmaker, Jean-Francais Oeben, to design a writing desk that could be closed and locked. Oeben worked on the idea for the last three years of his life but passed away before completing the project. It was left to his protege, Jean-Henri Riesner who completed it six years later, just five years before the King died. Depending on which Internet source you believe, that desk is either in the palace at Versailles or in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. (So much for the accuracy of Internet information) In spite of being an innovative piece of furniture, the desk, which was originally called a “curtain desk”, didn’t really catch on in America until the last half of the 19th Century, when the Industrial Revolution was in full force and families had moved from working on the farms to having jobs in the city with a regular income with which to buy nice things. The slogan that propelled the rolltop to its popularity was “A place for everything and everything in its place”, and the numerous small drawers, pigeonholes and shelves with a top that could be closed was a delight for thousands of small to medium size offices. The clever addition of slots in the desk sides made it easy to slip letters and documents in the desk without having to unlock the rolltop. The first kind of lockable desks are now known as “cylinder roll desks” and had solid wooden tops curved into a quarter circle that slid upward into the desk frame. These desks were subject to warpage and hanging up during operation. The first attempt to eliminate the warping problem consisted of replacing the single curved piece of wood with a cover made up of more than one piece of wood. When that didn’t completely solve the problem, someone came up with the idea of having the cover made of dozens of narrow wooden strips glued to a canvas backing that slid upward into slots cut in the desk sides. This style top is called a “tambour” and is what most people think of today when a roll top desk is mentioned. The idea was then used on the thousands of kitchen cabinets originally designed by the Hoosier Furniture Company.

ROLL TOP DESKS continued Like the earlier comment about the inaccuracy of the information available on the Internet, there are two stories as to who actually came up with the idea for the tambour. While one of the stories claims that Abner Cutler of the Cutler Desk Company patented the flexible tambour in 1850. Henderson County, Kentucky claims it was invented by Jacob Alles of the Jasper Desk Company in Jasper, Indiana who, while making sales calls in Austin, Texas, came up with the idea, whittled a sample with his pocket knife and sent it back to Jasper for production. Like most other antiques and collectibles, the interest in rolltop desks has declined over the past 30 years. In fact, 30 years ago the level of interest (and the prices) for rolltop desks for use in home offices was so high that a large number of companies began reproducing them, and a lot of them were made with the upper part large enough to hold large computer monitors. The end result was that the market was flooded and prices plummeted to less than 20% of their 1980 prices. In spite of the decline in prices, rolltop desks still fascinate people who wonder “What's behind the part that rolls down?”
