CUT GLASS by Len Waska Gaius Plinius Secundas, better known as Pliny The Elder, was a Roman official, a biographer and a historian who lived from 23 AD to 79 AD and, probably, with the help of a vivid imagination, wrote a lot of history. One of his claims was that Phonecian traders, who existed from about 3200 BC to about 300 BC accidentally stumbled across the process for making glass. He said a merchant ship loaded with Nitrum had stopped to prepare a meal and, with no stones to prop up their pots, used lumps of the Nitrum. The heat from their cooking fires melted the Nitrum and it mixed with the sand on the beach and created glass. Around the First Century BC, glass blowing was discovered, creating a new type of vessel to hold items and glass products spread throughout the Roman Empire. Nobody knows for sure when the process of cutting glass began. One source claims that Egyptians cut and engraved glass around 1500 BC, while another “expert” tells us that the Romans introduced a rudimentary form of glass cutting in the first Century AD, originally cutting with metal drills that were later replaced by stone wheels. Cut Glass is characterized by a series of facets cut in the glass surface in patterns, resulting in enhanced brilliance and reflecting ability and is one of the most popular techniques to embellish glassware, and, although the glass itself is inexpensive, the process is very labor intensive and requires skilled craftsmen. Consequently, cut glass is expensive and considered to be a luxury item. THE PROCESS The glass mixture is made up of silica, potash and lead oxide and is melted at 2400 degrees and blown into shape, placed in an annealing oven and allowed to cool to room temperature. Around 1902, the Fry Glass Company, in Rochester, Pennsylvania, began to cut glass on blanks that were pressed, rather than blown. Some unusually thick blanks may take up to ten days to cool properly. The lead oxide is added to the mixture to “soften” the glass to allow the cutting wheels to cut into the surface without shattering it. A design is drawn on the glass to determine the pattern and the glass then goes to a “rougher” who holds it against a fast moving eveled, metal wheel. Various sizes and shapes of wheels are used to achieve the desired design. A person, called the “smoother” finely cuts the design and it then goes to the “polisher” who polishes the glass with a wooden wheel or acid. The current process has derived from the technique imported from Italy after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and hasn’t changed much since then AMERICAN CUT GLASS The first cut glass produced in America was around the time of the Revolutionary War by the American Flint Glass Manufactory, located in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania but another source claims that it was produced by William Stiegel at the Elizabeth Furnace Glass House, which was also in Lancaster County. Around 1876, high quality silica deposits were found in the United States, which sparked innovation in glass formulas. The introduction of natural gas allowed better control of the furnace temperature than the coal previously used, and more accurate electric powered cutting wheels replaced the steam powered ones for better control. In the early 1800s, John Frederick Amelung made cut glassware for table use in Maryland, and cut glass was first advertised in America around 1830 when the Philadelphia Business Directory listed “McCord and Shiner, manufacturers of cut glass. Sets of glass executed to order at the shortest notice”. THE THREE PERIODS OF CUT GLASS Collectors refer to three periods of cut glass: EARLY 1765 to 1829; MIDDLE 1830 to 1870 and THE BRILLIANT PERIOD 1871 to 1905, although the exact dates of the periods vary somewhat. THE EARLY PERIOD 1765 to 1829 Pieces from this period are very rare with designs showing a lot of English and Irish designs such as pillars, prisms, flutes, single star, roundlets , English Strawberry and strawberry and fan. THE MIDDLE PERIOD 1830 to 1870 Pieces from this period consist of simple American designs, such as flute cutting, fine line cutting and engravings of mythological and historical figures, Some pieces were made of colored glass. THE BRILLIANT PERIOD 1871 to 1905 Encouraged by the 1876 Centennial Exposition ,a lot of glass houses competed to have their works on display in Philadelphia and this was when the finest cut glass was produced. Designs from this period are complex and deep and many new motifs were designed, such as chair bottom, hobnail, block, prism, notched prism, hobstar, fan and pinwheel. There were thousands of designs during this period that were all bright and clear, achieved through improved techniques of fusion, annealing, cutting and polishing. This was the peak of interest in Cut Glass and there were nearly 1000 glass cutting shops, but by 1900, tastes had changed, the public began to lose interest, and several companies began to press glass into molds that looked like cut glass but were much less costly and pushed cut glass to the sidelines. By 1910, there were fewer than 100 shops still cutting glass.

THE POPULAR HOUSES Among the thousands of glass houses, the most sought after glass comes from the highly regarded houses of Derflinger, Hawkes, Libbey, J. Hoare, Tuthill, Egginton, Mount Washington and C.F. Monroe. THE MONROE VASE Probably the largest and most elaborate piece of cut glass ever manufactured in America was made by the C. F. Monroe Company in Meriden, Connecticut. Although probably better known for their line of Opal ware, called Wave Crest, the company began cutting glass in 1892, employing 200 designers and cutters. Saint Louis had a World’s Fair scheduled for 1904 and asked Monroe to make an outstanding piece for them to put on display. The vase was made from Baccarat glass imported specifically for this job and weighed 67 pounds and was about two feet high and two feet in diameter at the top, tapering down to six inches at the base. Because if of its great weight, it took two men to hold it against the cutting wheel and they labored over two months to finish it. They received extra pay and were allowed frequent intervals to rest. Of the forty glass houses that submitted applications to exhibit their wares at the fair, only five were selected and the Monroe Vase was one of them. To this date, no one seems to know what happened to this vase. If you can find it, it will be worth a fortune because it was valued at $800 in 1904.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.
The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.
Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.

THE BREWSTER CHAIR by Len Waska Antique Furniture Restoration
In 1969, an arrogant antique dealer in Maine told a customer “You wouldn’t know a good antique if you saw one”. Besides his extreme arrogance, his biggest mistake was that he made it to a Rhode Island gentleman named Armand LaMontagne, a self-taught artist known for his extremely realistic sculptures of famous athletes. Deciding to put the “expert” in his place, Mr. LaMontagne spent weeks researching Colonial-era furniture from the 1600s. He learned that Great chairs from Colonial America are coveted because only people of high stature owned them. He also learned that two such chairs were made for William Brewster (1566-1643) who was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its spiritual leader, and the chairs were some of the first chairs made in America. At the time of his death, the records show that Brewster owned two chairs. His family donated a chair to the Pilgrim Museum in Plymouth, and other one has never surfaced. What could be more intriguing to an arrogant antique dealer than one of the oldest chairs in the country? Mr. LaMontagne got a picture of the existing Brewster chair and proceeded to make a duplicate. To make sure it was as accurate as possible, he payed careful attention to the tools available in the early 1600s and used materials of the period. He used green Oak that warped as it dried out and wooden pins of the Colonial era to hold elements of the chair together, as nails were practically unheard of at the time. Since a chair that old would show heavy wear to have lasted that many centuries, LaMontagne aged the chair by letting it soak in the ocean for a while, put it in a working smokehouse for a couple weeks, and even used lint from his wife’s cotton curtains when he painted it. He even broke a couple of the turned spindles below the front of the seat like someone would have done to hook their heels while leaning back. When the chair was completed, he had a friend in Maine call the dealer who had been so rude to him and tell the dealer that he had some family antiques he wanted to sell. When the dealer arrived, he glanced at the chair but went to look at another piece. As soon as LaMontagne’s friend left the room, the dealer rushed over to the chair to inspect it closely, and eventually purchased it. The chair changed hands many times and eventually was sold to the Henry Ford Museum in 1970 for $9,000 as a Brewster Great Chair. It wasn’t until 1977 that word got out that the Maine antiques dealer had fallen for a fake Brewster chair and it was proven when x-rays revealed that the drill bit used to make the holes had a modern point, rather than the spoon-shaped bits the Pilgrims had. Deciding to make lemonade out of the lemon, the Ford Museum keeps the chair on display as proof that not all “antiques” are really antique.

All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.
