CARNIVAL GLASS The interest in Art Glass reached its peak around the turn of the Nineteenth Century and its leading designers were Tiffany, Steuben and Loetz, all of whom had developed beautiful iridescent colors , but it was very expensive because the iridizing was in the glass mixture and only wealthy folks could afford it. In order to develop a product with similar colors, American ingenuity stepped in and, in October of 1907, the Fenton Glass Company came up with a method that obtained the same rainbow effect by spraying different salts on the hot glass as it is removed from the mold. Being so much less expensive to produce, it was more readily available to the average person who, up until that time, could only wish they could own a piece of it. In no time, the big glass houses of Northwood, Dugan-Diamond, Imperial and Millersburg saw the success that Fenton was having with it and began producing the new glassware which the different companies had named “Venetian Art”, “Iridill” or “Taffeta Glass”. Because it was so affordable, many families of moderate means were able to own some of it, and one wealthy lady was said to have made the comment “When the maid can afford similar glass, I don’t want it”, and , in spite of the idea that “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”, Louis Tiffany was offended. This iridized glass was in its heyday from 1908 until 1920 when mechanization and automation hit the glass industry. In the early 1920s, many glass houses installed machinery that allowed them to produce as much as fifty tons of cheap glass in a day. At the same time, the stock market was crashing, the nation’s economy was spiraling downhill and a large number of the glass houses that produced their glass by hand fell by the wayside. The end result was that their warehouses were full of Iridized glass that Americans no longer wanted, and the overseas market had also dried up, so they sold it to traveling carnivals for pennies on the dollar to use as prizes along the Midway. Even during the Depression and the tough years of World War II, the traveling carnivals did well because, no matter how broke the folks were, they could always come up with the money for entertainment and the carnival was the place to go! Every prize was cherished and put away with fond memories. Because so many people connected the glassware with carnivals, it became known as “Carnival Glass”. “THE BIG FIVE” The glass houses named above are considered to be the “Big Five” manufacturers, and, although there were several other firms making Carnival Glass, these five are viewed as the major companies and their glass is considered to be the most desirable and the most expensive. FENTON Fenton opened their first glass plant in Ohio 1905 and, in 1907,after moving to larger facilities in West Virginia, was the first glasshouse to develop a method to produce inexpensive iridized glassware which they called “Iridill”. Fenton’s first patterns were named “Waterlily and Cattails”, “Vintage Butterfly and Berries”, “Peacock Tail”, “Ribbon Tie”, “Wreath of Roses”, “Thistle” and “Diamond and Rib”. In the early 1920s, Fenton introduced Red, which became one of the most popular Carnival Glass colors. Fenton stopped making iridized glass in 1930 but re-introduced it in1970 under the name “Original Formula Carnival”, which helped the company have its largest sales in company history. They reissued some of the original patterns, used some molds purchased from defunct glasshouses and had some new molds made. In the 1970 reissues, Fenton marked the pieces with the name “Fenton” within an oval. In 1980, they placed a number under the name. A number “8” indicates it was made in the 1980s, a “9” indicates the 1990s, etc. During its production years, Fenton made over 150 patterns of Carnival Glass.

NORTHWOOD Also located in West Virginia, in 1908, Harry Northwood’s glass company quickly jumped on the bandwagon and introduced their own line of iridized glass they called “Golden Iris”. This is the color known today as “Marigold”. Northwood had their own version of Fenton’s “Waterlily and Cattails” pattern, but used their own initiative to introduce lines called “Cherry and Cable” and “Valentine” as well as several others. Around 1908, they introduced amethyst, cobalt, blue and green colors. Northwood’s best known pattern, “Grape and Cable”, was introduced in 1910 and was so popular that it was made in more than 60 different shapes. In 1912, they added pastel, ice blue, ice green and white, but they are probably best known for their aqua opalescent glass. Northwood’s Carnival Glass was of such high quality, that Bill Edwards, who wrote a book about Northwood’s Carnival Glass in 1978, called Northwood the “King of Carnival Glass”. Between 1908 and 1921, when the factory closed, Northwood trademarked eighty patterns of Carnival Glass, many of which are marked with an underlined “N” in a circle. DUGAN In 1904, Thomas Dugan formed the Dugan Glass Company and operated it until 1931 when the plant burned down, but it wasn’t until 1981 that collectors discovered that Dugan made Carnival Glass. Because he had bought some of Northwood’s molds, everyone thought it was all Northwood, but William Heacock found enough glass shards at the factory site to definitely attribute many patterns to Dugan. Some of Dugan’s patterns were “Target”, “Wide Rib”, “Quill”, “Honeycomb”, “Jeweled Heart”, “Vineyard” and “Pulled Loop”. Dugan is probably best known for developing the peach opalescent treatment which uses bone ash in the glass mixture and turns opague white when reheated. MILLERSBURG In 1909, another Fenton, John, left the business with his brother Frank at the Fenton factory, and formed his own company in Millersburg, Ohio. John was not as much of a businessman as he was a promoter and, after filing bankruptcy in 1911, the factory closed in 1912. Even though they only produced Carnival Glass for two years, Millersburg’s is considered to be among the best. Their first iridized glass was called “Radium” and some of their best known patterns were called “Hobstar and Feather”, “Blackberry Wreath”, and “Rays and Ribbons”. IMPERIAL The Imperial Glass Company was established in Bellaire, Ohio and, like all the other glass houses of the time , produced crystal glass until the Carnival craze hit. They produced Carnival Glass until the early 1930s and re-introduced it in the 1960s when they marked the pieces with their “IG” logo. When Imperial was bought by Lenox, an “L” was added to the IG mark and when Arthur Lorch bought the company in 1981, he added a letter “A” to the “LIG” mark. Imperial closed in 1982. Imperial is best known for its purple and smoke carnival colors and a silvery iridescence called “Helios”. IDENTIFYING YOUR PATTERN With approximately 2,500 patterns of Carnival Glass in existence, and very few of them bearing manufacturer’s marks, the task if identifying a pattern is very daunting. While dozens of reference books have been written about Carnival Glass, an inexpensive place to start is David Doty’s website www.ddoty.com which shows hundreds of patterns to help collectors. Although his reference book is out of print, Doty’s book is one of the most requested books ever written on the subject. Another excellent book that is recently out of print and still readily available on the secondary market is the “Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass”, originally written by Bill Edwards and recently authored by Mike Carwile. This book lists over 2,000 patterns with a photo of each pattern and values for each piece in each of the colors it came in. (Continued on Page 31)

CURRENT BOOKS ON CARNIVAL GLASS
This is the most difficult part to explain because, in addition to the large number of patterns, Carnival Glass was also made in 75 colors, although most pieces exist in only four or five colors. While most pieces of Carnival Glass are valued under $200, it is the color that determines the value. Probably the most extreme example of differences in price because of color is a Northwood “Acorn Burrs” punch bowl which, in Marigold, the most common color, is worth $1000, while the same piece in blue is worth $37,000 and $39,000 when found in Aqua Opalescent (Check your attic!) and a U. S. Glass “Frolicking Bears” pitcher in green is worth $45,000, with the matching tumblers selling for $13,500 each.

Describes over 500 patterns, U.S. and makers from Europe, Australia, South and Central America and the Far East., 224 pages, 531 photos, $49.95. “THE ART OF CARNIVAL GLASS” by Thistlewood, 665 color photos identifying color, pattern, manufacturer and value 256 pages, $ 39.95. “A CENTURY OF CARNIVAL GLASS” by Thistlewood primarily covers modern Carnival glass made in the past 45 years, 256 pages, 547 photos, $39.95. Kick-off is at 10:30 a.m. with our annual parade. Parade includes floats, classic cars, antique tractors, bicycles and pets, all decked out in their patriotic best! Parade travels through the downtown historic district on High Street and then on to Comfort Park. Texas-Style Barbecue is served at the park beginning at 11:30 a.m. with beans, potato salad and all the trimmings for a nominal charge. It is prepared by members of the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department. There is also family fun at the park including moon bounces and carnivalstyle games as well as other vendors.
