ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS!

CLEBURNE

The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.

DECORATING YOUR VICTORIAN HOME by Len Waska A lot of people these days are restoring old Victorian homes but are in a quandary as to the correct interior decoration for the time period in which the home was built. Queen Victoria was on the throne from 1837 until 1901 and during those 64 years, society probably invented more things than any other time in history, and tastes changed many times. Furniture styles included Empire, Gothic Revival, French Revival (more commonly known now as Rococo Revival), Renaissance Revival and Eastlake, in addition to numerous less popular styles including Cottage Furniture and Spool Turned, known today as Jenny Lind, and Art Nouveau which came into being around 1890. Styles of decorating homes also varied widely so we at ANTIQUING TEXAS thought we’d help you decorate your Victorian home in the style that was the most popular at the time it was built. We’ll discuss each room in the home and how they were decorated at different times. Obviously, with millions of homes and thousands of designers, there is no “one size fits all” rule to control decoration, so we’ll point out the dominant decorating ideas of the times. The Industrial Revolution, which began in the 1820s with the development of the Erie Canal, the steamboat, the railroad and coal from Pennsylvania, created a new class of citizen, the “white collar worker”, consisting of managers, clerks, accountants and salesmen and by 1870 most people lived in cities rather than on farms. They didn’t work with their hands and could afford to copy the lifestyle of the wealthy people of their parent’s generation. The Industrial Revolution resulted in furniture, china, and other goods that were much less expensive than in earlier years when everything was made by hand.

THE ENTRY HALL The entry hall in the Victorian home was not really a hall, but a room with a specific purpose. It was the first room you entered and was primarily a place of greeting. In wealthier homes, the butler would meet you and take your calling card to the master or madam of the house. If you were to be received, the butler would place your hat and coat on a hall tree which was a tall piece that sat against the wall and had hooks to hold the clothing and often had a mirror, an umbrella stand and a compartment to store overshoes and gloves. The decor of the entry hall was simple but classy, designed to impress the visitor without overshadowing the parlor. Many entry hall floors were made of marble or ceramic tile. The lower portion of the wall was covered with wood panels, embossed tin or Lincrusta, usually from 28 to 36 inches high. Lincrusta was developed by the son of the man who invented linoleum and it was made with embossed designs. Today’s home restorer can get a comparable product made of pressed paper called Anaglypta that duplicates the Lincrusta. The upper walls of the entry hall were usually painted in solid colors while the ceilings often were covered with pressed metal. Where the wall and ceiling meet, there was almost always either a wide wooden crown molding or a painted paper divider called a “frieze” which was usually from 12 to 18 inches wide. Having the wood or Lincrusta covered lower part of the wall and the wide frieze at the top of the wall was called the “Tripartite” design and the combination varied as tastes changed over time. Other items found in the entry hall were a boot scraper, a calling card receiver and a magnificent chandelier hanging from a molded ceiling medallion designed to impress the visitor. During the 1840s and 1850s, gas lighting was introduced and chandeliers had many small flames to light the room. In 1880, Thomas Edison introduced electric lighting and an antique hunter nowadays can often run across gas chandeliers that were converted to use electricity when it became available to the homeowner.

22 THE PARLOR Containing only the finest furniture and accessories, the parlor was designed to impress the visitor because the Victorians were proud of their wealth and wanted to show it off. Furniture was arranged in intimate groupings and a large center table was used to display favorite objects. Most parlors had feminine appointments and were off limits to the family unless guests were present. The parlor was also a place for courting as the young couple was most likely to be safe from interruption from a vigilant father or younger siblings. Walls were the most important aspect in decorating the parlor. Around the mid 1800s, gaslights brought deep, warm colors of russet, gold and pumpkin. By the 1890s, the wainscot (the covering on the lower part of the wall) reached the peak of it’s popularity, and pastel shades were back in vogue again plus muted greens, gray-blue and earthtones, and yellow was especially good with wood furniture. When wallpaper was used, it was usually striped or had bold floral patterns. By the late 1890s, the Tripartite wall design had become old and designers used either the wainscot or the frieze, but not both, and walls were painted light shades of gray, lilac, silver, light blue, light green, fawn, rose and pale olive. Through the 1860s and 1870s, floors were covered with dark carpeting from wall to wall, with large floral patterns for formal settings and, during the the last quarter of the century, the trend was to hardwood floors with oriental rugs that often overlapped. Parlor ceilings were often painted a lighter shade of the wall color and the cornice was usually painted a darker shade for a rich look. Ceiling medallions and ornate chandeliers were a must for the parlor and papered ceilings became popular in the late 1800s. Ceiling medallions became passe in the late 1890s and were done away with. Window treatments changed with time. In the early 1800s, curtains were used with a wooden cornice and a fabric valance. By mid-century, shades and lace curtains were floor length. By the late century, pleated valance and pinch pleated sheers were popular with floor length drapes. Parlor furniture was the finest the family could afford and was usually varied and abundant. Depending on the size of the room a formal parlor would contain a sofa with a matching loveseat and several matching side chairs and various tables including a large center table, also called a parlor table, a tea table and possibly a game table. An etagere was used to display various decorative objects and souvenirs Prior to 1880, all the furniture in the room had to be of the same style (Rococo, Renaissance Revival, etc,) but after 1880 it was considered “acceptable” to mix styles in the same room.

THE DINING ROOM Dining rooms are probably the best evidence of the revolution that took place in the middle of the ninteenth century. The Industrial Revolution lowered the price of household goods, furniture, dishes and china so much that even the middle class families could afford them. Early in the century, very few homes even had a dining room and ordinary folk cooked, ate and lived in the same room. The dining room was a sign of great wealth. By the 1860s, a separate room for eating was very popular and eating “in the kitchen” was considered crude. The Victorian dining room was important because it brought family members together to plan or review their daily activities, and dinner was the centerpiece of an evening’s entertainment. In keeping with the Victorian penchant to impress, only the finest china, silver and linens were used when guests were present. Besides the table large enough to serve the entire family, the only other large piece of furniture in the room was the sideboard which was usually massive with a tall pediment and several shelves displaying glassware, china or decorative items. Early in the Victorian period, walls were painted in somber colors such as gray or light brown. By mid-century, colors were warm with rich colors of red, crimson or claret. In the 1870s, the Tripartite design was the most popular and, if the dining room connected to the parlor, the colors were reversed from the parlor. Walls were papered or painted yellow, terra cotta, peacock blue, olive or old gold. By the 1890s, the design trends were scaled back to wallpaper and the frieze with no dado (another name for the covering on the lower part of the wall) or paper and the dado with no frieze and walls were painted in warm colors like claret, olive, blue or brown paired with a lighter frieze in salmon, tan, buff or orange. The high style dining room had strong, dark furniture and wall paper with either large floral patterns, scenic or striped. When Lincrusta was used for the dado, it.was usually painted in a darker shade of the wall coler. In the country home, wainscoat (dado) was used with gray, lilac, or blue walls. Flooring in the dining room prior to the 1870s, was wall to wall carpet with large floral or foliage patterns and, after the 1870s, floors were usually hardwood with oriental rugs. Ceilings, like the entry and parlor, were intended to impress and, in mid-century, either had gilded cornices, were coffered (a pattern of beams crossing in both directions) or were stenciled. In the last quarter of the century, metal ceilings were in vogue. Formal dining rooms had the ceiling painted in a lighter shade of the wall color and had to have the massive chandelier hanging about three feet above the table and, of course, the impressive ceiling medallion. Windows were layered with shutters, lace panels and floor length curtains and valances. Curtains were usually wine colored velvet with gold tassels and fringes. (Think of the dress for Scarlet in Gone With the Wind or Carol Burnett’s takeoff of the movie). By the late period, windows only had shutters with lace panels and a swag.

THE LIBRARY While the parlor was always decorated with a feminine touch, the library was the exact opposite. It was the master’s domain and decidedly masculine, with somber colors and massive furnishings. Male visitors were often invited to the library after dinner to talk, relax, have a glass of sherry and smoke cigars. Items related to these activities like liquor cabinets, pipes, humidors and spitoons were often on display and, if the master of the house was a hunter or involved in competitive shooting, which was very popular prior to the turn of the century, his guns might be on display. Even in Central Texas today, there are shooting clubs still in existence although their meetings are more social events. Family business was conducted in the library and the bookcases held books with natural leather bindings with bright red inserts and gold embossed titles. Rich woods were used for the mantle and built-in bookcases and walls were in suqtle shades of gray or blue with a wooden wainscoat. During the Eastlake period after 1880, walls were painted in deep reds, green or purple and, after 1900, walls were restful reds or browns. As mentioned earlier, floors were covered with dark wall to wall carpeting with large bold designs prior to about 1875 when wooden floors with oriental rugs became popular. Ceilings were painted a lighter shade of the dominant wall color and the latter part of the century saw crown molding with gilt trim or ceilings papered with creative masculine designs. Windows in the early part of the 1800s had shades, under curtains and heavy drapery of velvet or brocade in colors that contrast with the wall color. Painted venetian blinds with wooden valances were also popular at the time. By the later part of the century, shutters were stained to match the wood in the room or painted to match the walls, and during the Eastlake period (after 1880) shutters and simple lace panels were used with valances or drapes that matched the walls.

PAGE 23

THE SITTING ROOM The sitting room was an informal setting where the family usually gathered after dinner to talk or participate in hobbies, games, reading or other activities. In the early part of the 1800s, walls were painted or papered in colors lighter than the library, such as rose, blue or light gray. Preferred colors changed in the last half of the century to cream, fawn or pale olive green. Since the sitting room was informal, flooring was never wall to wall carpeting, but was almost always hardwood with oriental rugs. Ceilings rarely had any ornamentation and windows had simple shades or chintz curtains in light colors.

THE KITCHEN The kitchen in the high end homes was seldom visited by family members and was limited to the help. In the ordinary home, the kitchen became a popular gathering place for the family and today’s kitchen is almost always that. If you read the five part series on Kitchen Collectibles that appeared in Antiquing Texas last year, you’ll remember that the kitchens of the early 1800s had very little furniture, consisting of wall hanging cupboards, work tables and a wood burning stove. In the late 1800s, the baker’s cabinet was invented that had a work surface with storage below and in 1898, the Hoosier Manufacturing Company, in Albany, Indiana, made a vast improvement on the baker’s cabinet by replacing the lower section of the baker’s cabinet with a cabinet base with a door on one side to store pots and pans and drawers on the other side for small implements. The upper section was divided into storage areas with wood or glass doors. Later improvements were pull out bread boards, a metal bread drawer to keep our mice, flour sifters and sugar and spice containers, The Hoosier cabinet has today become one of the most sought after pieces of kitchen furniture for people recreating the late victorian kitchen. It wasn’t until the 1920s that wall to wall kitchen cabinets were devised. Prior to that, kitchen cabinets were of dark wood with glass doors and marble worksurfaces. Kitchen walls were neutral shades of tan or cream and woodwork was painted a deeper shade or hand grained to look like more expensive wood. In the later period, walls were tan, light green, gold or yellow with a wood wainscoat. Wall paper was rarely used in kitchens. Floors were usually pine, painted gray, dark green, red or a deep mustard color. In 1855, Frederick Walton invented Linoleum which was made of solidified linseed oil (hence the first part of it’s name), pine resin, ground cork dust, sawdust and mineral fillers. Because linoleum was so easy to keep clean, it soon became the first choice in kitchen floor covering. As mentioned earlier, Frederick Walton’s son devised a method to emboss patterns in the.linoleum and named it after himself, calling it Linscrusta Walton and it became a very popular material for the lower part of wall covering. Early kitchen ceilings were almost always painted white until pressed tin became popular and it was also usually painted white. Early kitchen windows usually had window shades or cotton rod-pocket curtains that were tied back. After about 1890, simple dotted swiss panels hung in the lower half of the window.

THE BEDROOM By the middle of the century, sensibilities prescribed that bedrooms and public rooms must always be on separate floors and bedrooms were where people were born and died. Before hospitals, the bedroom was their entrance and exit from the world. While the wife’s bedroom was a sanctuary for her to retreat and get away for a while, the man’s bedroom was usually just a place for him to wash, dress and sleep. Bedroom walls in sunny rooms were painted in light tones of pastel pink, blue, green or ivory with a frieze. Bedrooms with a Northern exposure were done in deeper shades of rose, jade or a rich blue. During the early part of the century, stripes were favored and high style bedrooms had deep colors of rose, green, blue and tan. The Eastlake period had more muted colors of pastel pink, soft blue, beige and sea green with a frieze. During the Eastlake period, stripes had returned to favor and papering the ceiling made it “dressy”. Since guests seldom visited the bedrooms, ceilings were subject to minimal decoration and often had a simple stencil decoration around the perimeter. Ceilings were either eggshell or ivory or were painted a lighter shade of the wall color. Bedroom windows had simple light curtains of cretonne, cheesecloth, or swiss trimmed with lace and hung on poles. For further information on decorating your victorian home, pick up a copy of “Collector’s Guide to Victoriana”, by 0. Henry Mace. While the book was published in 1991, it is still the best single book on the subject and is the source for most of this article.

MARY GREGORY GLASS

Of the thousands of items that people collect, glassware is the most popular, but one type called Mary Gregory also comes with a mystery that has eluded collectors for over a century. Mary Gregory is the term used to describe glassware that has been decorated in white enamel, particularly with scenes depicting children at play. The term came into common usage in the 1920s and originally applied only to glass decorated with images of children, but today the term is applied to any white enamel work, including animals and scenes. The mystery surrounding this style of glassware is: Who was Mary Gregory and did she really create the style of decoration that bears her name? During the past fourty years, there have been numerous attempts to solve the mystery. In 1970, Robert Miller published Mary Gregory and Her Glass in which he shows the only two known photographs of her, located her grave in Cape Cod, MA and found the company records proving that she worked for the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. What he was unable to prove, however, was that she actually decorated the glass. But he had this to say about it: “To those of you who say she never decorated little figures of boys and girls in white enamel, I’ll place my more than twenty years research on the line - today, tomorrow, yesterday”. Miller was obviously a man of conviction. Since Mr. Miller issued that statement, another study was conducted by Robert and Deborah Truitt, who published Mary Gregory Glassware in 1992, and updated it in 2008 with information recently discovered. While acknowledging that there is a great mystery surrounding Mary Gregory glass, they state unequivocally “One thing that is certain is that Boston and Sandwich did not produce the glassware and Mary Gregory did not decorate it”. In addition to their own study, the Truitts also refer to studies conducted by several catalogs from German glass factories of the 1880’s show many such pieces of glass, “No such documentation has ever been found of such ware being made at Sandwich”. The Truitts also quote Dwight P. Lanmon stating “I have yet to see documentation or even circumstantial evidence that points convincingly to an American source for a single piece of Mary Gregory glass”, but the strongest evidence that Mary Gregory glass was not made at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was a statement by Raymond Barlow and Joan Kaiser, authors of a four volume set of books entitled, “The Glass Industry in Sandwich”, who inspected fourteen thousand pounds of glass fragments from the Boston and Sandwich factory and failed to uncover even one piece of glass with children painted on it. Barlow and Kaiser stated that in the several branches of Mary Gregory’s family they interviewed, there are no heirlooms with children on them, and they conclude by saying, “The glass on which children were painted has no resemblance to glass known to have been produced in Sandwich”. “Mary Gregory Glass” is greatly sought after and commands high prices for well decorated pieces. The quality of the artwork varies widely and directly affects the price. The style, often referred to as “Painted Cameo”, is accomplished by painting the figure with a thinned white enamel and adding the appearance of dimension by painting areas with one or more layers of a thicker enamel until the desired appearance is achieved. It does not take an expert eye to quickly determine the ability of the artist doing the work. Credit for creating this style of high quality all-white enamel is given to Friedrich Egermann of Bohemia (1777-1864), who was so fascinated by the quality of the decoration on porcelain at Meissen that he posed as a deaf mute to obtain a job there and was able to learn the secrets for mixing and firing the enamel. Returning to Bohemia, he developed new methods and elevated painting to the superior quality used on the better Mary Gregory glass.

While the quality of the glass used affects the value of the piece somewhat, the main factor determining value is the quality of the brushwork. In their book Mary Gregory Glassware, 1880-1990, the Truitts established a ten point system to evaluate the artwork, with ten representing the finest work. Since this high quality artwork is close to being a lost art, any glassware with “ten” quality painting was almost assuredly made before 1930.

After World War II, Czechoslavakia’s economy was devastated and six years of German occupation had so turned the citizens against Germany, that all Czechs of German ancestry were despised and, unfortunately, they were also the factory owners and the decorators. After WWII, several attempts were made to revive the glass industry and, in 1947, the Communist Party won the elections, nationalized the glass industry and expelled the German-Czechs from the country, thus dealing a death blow to the industry. The quality of the glass never regained it’s pre-war levels and the quality of the art work fell to levels three or four on Truitt’s numbering system. Sometime in the 1970s, designers did away with the “white-on-white” decoration method and introduced the “take away” method of decorating where the figure is painted on the glass thickly and scraped away where detail is desired. The first Mary Gregory glass proven to have been produced in the United States was in 1957 when Westmoreland Glass company, who had hired brothers Edward and Edmond Pohl, direct descendents of Bohemia’s most notable engravers and painters of the early 1800s, introduced a line of plates, bells, boxes, baskets and vases which were so popular that it was continued until the factory closed its doors in 1985. Since then, several American companies have decorated glassware made by other firms in the Mary Gregory style and, like everything else nice, many cheap copies have been brought to the market to fool the novice collector. Treasured Editions in Jeanette, PA and Rosso Wholesale Glass contracted with various companies to make “Mary Gregory” style glass; A.A. Importing in St. Louis carried imports from Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s, and the Fenton Art Glass company introduced its own line in 1991 and is well illustrated in James Measell’s book Fenton Glass - The 1990s Decade. Dating Mary Gregory glass or indentifying its country of origin is difficult because very few factory catalogs exist and, being hand decorated, each piece is unique and very few pieces will show any wear because it was made for decoration rather than daily use. The most reliable sources for identification of early Mary Gregory glass are the catalogs from the glass factory of Julius Mulhaus in the 1880s and the Carl Hosch factory catalogs from the early 1900s. The catalogs of Carl Palda and Hartmann & Dietrichs also carry this style decoration. While the catalogs don’t show every combination of glass shape and decoration, they can be used for comparison and attribution. In general, all pieces known to have been decorated in the United States are done only in white enamel while pieces with colored faces, hair or clothes are believed to have been decorated in Bohemia. In spite of Robert Miller putting his reputation on the line, and numerous catalogs from German and Bohemian glasshouses from the 1880s featuring Mary Gregory style glass, there is no evidence that this style of glass was made in the United States prior to 1953, much less by Mary Gregory at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. This raises the question: “How did a spinster from Massachusetts ever get her name attached posthumously to work she never did?” Sources: R. Miller: Mary Gregory and Her Glass; R & D Truitt Mary Gregory Glassware, 1880-1990; L. Kovar:Westmoreland Glass, The Popular Years, 1940-1985
